ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

In the Stormlands, the fall was complete, and the lament had begun. The sun banners of Dorne swept the country like a heatwave out of the south. Under Prince Doran’s precise hand and Prince Oberyn’s swift columns, the Stormlands’ brittle defenses finished collapsing. Lords without a single commander over them, eaten by their own quarrels and hollowed by Stannis’s death, broke at first contact, yielded at first sight, or were shut up in isolated keeps to fall one by one. Storm’s End itself, the great drum of Baratheon pride, held through a long siege and fell in the end the way strong castles usually fall, from inside, by betrayal, with whispers that part of the garrison had been bought by Dorne or had simply despaired of King’s Landing ever coming. When the spearmen broke the last gate and Prince Oberyn rode his tall sand steed slowly into the empty great hall, the age of the Stormlands as a power of its own ended with the echo of hooves on stone.

In King’s Landing, Cersei raged on the Iron Throne and could do nothing else. The Golden Company was bleeding on Dragonstone, the royal fleet was spent at sea, and there was no rescue to send. The loss cost the crown its southeastern shield and its last untapped well of levies, and it handed Dorne a border with the Crownlands and the Reach and a seat among the great predators. Doran Martell, the patient sun, had struck once, like a thunderbolt, and taken more ground faster than anyone else in the whole burning war. The Stormlands wept. In the courts of Sunspear, one imagines, the music had a desert flavor that night.

On the narrow sea, the three-sided melee burned toward its peak. Daenerys, with Drogon aloft again, wounded but no less a dragon for it, steadied Dragonstone’s land defense and began to press back. The Unsullied, having taken the Golden Company’s measure, showed the cold side of their discipline and squeezed the invaders down into a few beachhead footholds. At sea the balance tipped with the Dornish fleet’s relentless pressure and the withdrawal of Euron’s crippled Silence, its whereabouts now unknown, and the royal fleet, stripped of its strangest ally and caught between two enemies, began to stagger. The Arbor’s main strength under Lord Redwyne still lay across the Westerlands coast like a bar of iron, but in the main theater of the narrow sea, command of the water was quietly passing to Dragonstone.

Tyrion Lannister wasted none of it. Through Varys’s threads he deepened the rot inside King’s Landing, feeling out every faction that feared Cersei more than it feared change, and he reached as well for the scattered and hidden lords still loyal to House Baratheon, remnants like House Dondarrion, hoping to raise the Stormlands against their new Dornish masters, or at the least to breed enough chaos there to pin Dorne’s spears in place. The war of the dragon and the lion settled into its cruelest phase, stalemate and attrition, both sides bled white, each waiting for the variable from some other corner of Westeros that would break the scale.

In the Vale, the quiet had undercurrents. Petyr’s mastery of the Eyrie, built on his marriage to Lysa Arryn, his grip on the coin, and years of patient maneuver, was real but not seamless. Old blood like House Royce still despised what he was and how he had risen, and more than a few knights chafed at hiding behind the Bloody Gate while the Seven Kingdoms tore themselves apart and other men gathered the glory and the spoils. So part of his attention went to balancing his own house, and the rest went to his favorite trade: grain and intelligence sold to the warring powers, chiefly the Westerlands and the Reach, for gold, for leverage, and for an ever finer map of everyone’s insides. His feelers had even begun to reach into the Riverlands, through Vale lords with old ties east of the Trident, testing, whispering, and cataloguing every river lord who resented Arthur’s rule or feared where it led. He was in no hurry to set the Riverlands alight; that would trample his northern garden. But a few seeds of distrust cost nothing to plant, and Pheasant Hall was keeping the west far too busy to weed.

And in the North, the cracks spread in silence, though not entirely along the lines of Petyr’s script. Bran Stark kept to his chambers beneath the godswood and scarcely left them, sunk day and night in visions of ravens, weirwood, and green dreams, with neither interest in ruling nor the strength for it, while Maester Luwin and a handful of loyal servants kept the castle breathing and their writ ended at its walls. The rule of the North was, in truth, an empty chair. The Greatjon had buried most of his sons in the wars against the dead and the Boltons and, worn down by wounds and sickness, could hold Last Hearth and nothing more. Alfie Karstark had carried his grudge since Robb took his father Rickard’s head, and though he had bent when bending was wise, he kept no loyalty for Winterfell or House Stark, only for Karhold’s survival, and he was already trading furs and timber to certain Vale merchants for precious grain, never asking too loudly whose merchants they were. Lyanna Mormont, young and unbending, held Bear Island by will alone, mired in the frictions and shortages the settlement of the free folk had brought. That settlement in the Gift went badly, rubbing raw against the remnants of the Night’s Watch and the local villages, and the Watch itself, after the war and Jon Snow’s departure, was a hundred men rattling around a few ruined castles, unable to keep even a basic patrol. Over all of it lay famine, blowing through every northern corner like the coldest wind, and the trickle of grain Petyr slipped in through his channels relieved almost no one while sharpening everyone’s hunger and everyone’s grievance. The North was a great ice field full of cracks, bearing more weight from within and without than ice was ever meant to hold, and the sound of it breaking felt one cold night away.

Which brings the eye back to the hottest point on the continent. At Pheasant Hall, the fury of the Reach and the desperation of the west had gone on for days past counting. Stretches of wall were lost and retaken and lost again. The moat filled with corpses and then with newer blood. The wreckage of siege towers and the bodies of defenders piled at the foot of the wall like a second, more honest rampart. Arthur’s face was smoke and dried blood, his voice worn down to a hiss, the grip of his greatsword slick and dark. The reinforcements and supplies Diana fed forward from the rear were a trickle into a pond going dry, enough to keep the line from collapsing and not one wagon more. Smith’s Bannermen Guard still cut and bled the Reach in the hills, a constant wound, and not a mortal one. And the Reach suffered too, gutted and exhausted, but Olenna had decided Pheasant Hall would fall, and the wealth of Highgarden kept pouring men and grain into the scale at any price, while Randyll Tarly’s cold, steady hand shifted the point of the attack again and again, grinding out the defenders’ last strength.

It had become the purest contest left in Westeros, of will, endurance, and how much a realm could spend before it died, and both sides stood at the edge of their limits, waiting for the last straw. That straw might be a wall section finally coming down. It might be a rebellion inside the Riverlands cutting the grain road, or Lord Jason’s fleet broken at last by the Arbor, or some upheaval far away, in King’s Landing or Dragonstone or Sunspear, heavy enough to tilt every board at once.

Arthur leaned against the cracked battlement, breathing hard, watching the Reach mass below like a tide gathering itself once more. He could feel the final general assault sitting in the next hour like weather. He gripped his sword and rasped to Kator, Marco, and the rest of his spent, fierce-eyed officers, “Tell the brothers. With our last breath, we take a bite out of the Reach.”

And then, from behind Pheasant Hall, came hoofbeats at the wrong speed and a horn that belonged to no part of the battlefield. A messenger caked in dust half-fell from his horse, staggered up onto the wall, and spent the last of his strength on a report that stunned every bleeding man in earshot.

“My lord! The rear... the Vale! A Vale army has appeared near Seagard! Urgent word from Lord Jason! And in the eastern Riverlands, nobles have raised their banners. They fly... they fly the trout of House Tully!”

It went through the smoke over Pheasant Hall like a bolt of cold lightning. Arthur’s pupils narrowed to points.

The Vale. Littlefinger, off his perch at last, and choosing this hour and this place, Seagard, the Riverlands’ one great door to the sea, the hinge of the whole maritime lifeline between the west and the Trident. And inside the Riverlands, Tully banners. Edmure sat a comfortable hostage at Casterly Rock. So whose hand was raising the trout?

Ahead, the Reach’s last frenzied assault. Behind and beside, the heart of the Riverlands turning. At sea, the lifeline under a new knife. Pheasant Hall, which had already borne more than stone should bear, now stood at the exact center of the storm’s eye, with pressure from every quarter at once, enough to tear it apart entire.

With one step by the Vale, the war in Westeros lurched into a darker and more tangled shape, crowded with fatal variables. For Arthur Greyoak and the realm he had stitched together, the hour of judgment had truly come.
