The Maker: Hollywood

The heavy, iron-strapped oak door of the Green Dragon swung shut against the rising evening chill of the Waikato, cutting off the sound of wind rustling through the newly planted plum orchards outside.

Inside, the pub was warm, smelling of fresh pine shavings, wet lime mortar, curing chimney soot, and the sharp, yeasty tang of malt.

The hearth was built from massive slabs of dark grey river stone dragged up from the bottom of the local creek bed, five feet wide and deep enough to burn whole birch logs without a grate. Flames crackled against the dry bark, throwing dancing orange shadows across the low timber rafters that supported the sod roof overhead.

Sitting around an unvarnished trestle table that had been sawed from a single fallen kauri trunk were Daniel, Peter Jackson, Guillermo del Toro, and Dante Ferretti.

Standing on the flagstones near the taproom counter was a broad-shouldered man in his late forties named Jock. He had forearms like bowling pins, stained denim overalls, and a grey-streaked beard that looked like it had survived twenty seasons of dairy farming. Jock was a fourth-generation Waikato cattle rancher who had spent his entire adult life running an independent craft brewery out of an old butter factory two valleys over.

More importantly, Jock was an absolute, unrepentant Tolkien obsessive.

He had read the worn paperback copies of The Lord of the Rings until the spines cracked and the maps fell out when he was fourteen, sitting on tractor seats waiting for rain. When Miller Studios bought the Alexander farm twelve months ago, Jock had practically camped on the regional council’s front lawn until they introduced him to Dante Ferretti, swearing on his family’s land title that no foreign commercial conglomerate was going to serve mass-produced, chemically carbonated pale lager in the Shire.

Jock walked over to the table carrying four heavy, thick-lipped earthenware jugs with no handles. He set them down with a series of dull, ceramic clunks that rattled the cutlery.

”There,” Jock said, crossing his thick arms and wiping his palms on his apron with an expression of fierce, stubborn defiance. ”The 1601 Stout. Brewed with roasted Canterbury barley, raw flaked oats, dark molasses, and local well water. No artificial pressure, no industrial gas tanks. Gravity fed from the cellar casks behind the cold-wall.”

Guillermo looked into his jug. The liquid inside was pitch-black, so opaque it swallowed the firelight, capped with two inches of dense, creamy foam that looked like beaten cream.

”Jock, my friend,” Guillermo chuckled, picking up the jug with both hands. ”It smells like an entire bakery caught fire inside a coffee shop.”

”It’s eight-point-six percent,” Jock stated flatly, not cracking a smile. ”Professor Tolkien wrote that the Gaffer and the folk of Bywater drank dark, heavy ales that sustained a working man through twelve hours of ditch digging. Hobbits have four breakfasts and a massive liver metabolism. They don’t drink light summer spritzers. They drink beer with body.”

Daniel picked up his jug, feeling the rough, cold clay against his fingers. He took a long, slow drink.

The taste hit hard—bitter chocolate, scorched bread, rich molasses, and an earthy hop bite that cut cleanly through the sweetness, leaving a dry, warming heat in the back of the throat. It wasn’t modern craft beer; it tasted heavy, ancient, and remarkably clean.

”Well?” Jock asked, his jaw locked, watching Daniel like a judge waiting for a guilty verdict.

”It’s incredible,” Daniel said, setting the jug down. ”Really. It has actual weight.”

Jock’s shoulders dropped about two inches, a deep breath escaping his chest. A faint, proud smirk broke through his beard. ”Told you. The Wellington lads wanted to bring in standard tap rigs from Auckland. I told Dante if I saw a single stainless-steel brand tap mounted on that cedar bar, I’d take an axe to the plumbing myself.”

”He would have, too,” Peter laughed, wiping foam off his mustache. ”I tried to tell him we’d have American tourists here in three years who just want a cold diet cola, and Jock looked at me like I’d just suggested burning down Bag End.”

”Tourists can drink what Bilbo drank,” Jock grunted, pulling a wooden stool over and sitting down at the end of the table. ”If they want a sugar soda, they can walk two miles down the road to the petrol station on State Highway 27. Inside this valley, the beer stays authentic.”

Guillermo took a thick slice of sharp cheddar from a wooden board on the table, bit into it, and chased it with another gulp of stout, groaning with pure, unvarnished pleasure. ”This is dangerous, Peter. Very dangerous. If we put this in the background of the birthday party scene, the extras aren’t going to be acting jolly. They are going to be completely, hopelessly legless by noon.”

”We water it down for the background takes,” Peter said, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the rough wood. ”Jock’s brewing a three-percent table mild for the filming days. Same dark color, same foam, but the lads can drink six pints without falling into the millpond during the dance numbers.”

”Wise,” Daniel noted dryly. ”I don’t need eighty local Kiwis drowning in three feet of pond water on Day 12 because of Tolkien lore.”

”Aye,” Peter chuckled, picking up a handful of brass beer-bottle caps Jock had set down and absentmindedly sliding them across the table, arranging them into small defensive formations against the grain of the wood. ”We save the eight-percent stuff for the wrap parties.”

Daniel leaned back against the high timber bench, letting the warmth of the fire soak into his back. The journey had been fourteen hours in the air, then forty-five minutes on winding, narrow rural roads, but looking around this room, the fatigue was entirely gone.

”Let’s talk about the cast,” Daniel said, his voice quiet, cutting through the crackle of the birch logs. ”The flights start landing in Auckland in six days. Where are we with the contracts?”

Peter pushed the bottle caps aside, reaching down to a battered canvas bag between his bare feet. He pulled out a thick, plastic-bound production folder with several headshots paperclipped to the front pages, setting it on the kauri table between them.

The casting of *The Lord of the Rings* had been a six-month knife fight between traditional agency protocol in Century City and Daniel’s absolute refusal to allow the trilogy to be turned into a shiny, modern vanity vehicle for current box office stars.

Rival studios had tried to pitch their standard stable of marquee names the second the rights were acquired. Warner Bros executives had privately whispered that Brad Pitt should play Aragorn. Universal had floated the idea of casting an established American comedian as Frodo to give the film mainstream domestic appeal.

Daniel had thrown every single one of those pitch decks directly into the shredder.

This trilogy wasn’t *The Avengers*. *The Avengers* worked because Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, and Scarlett Johansson had larger-than-life, modern star magnetism that pulled the spectacle along with them. Middle-earth was different. The minute an audience recognized an actor from a chewing gum commercial or a romantic comedy, the myth shattered. The faces had to belong to the dirt, the wind, and the stone.

”Let’s start with the wizard,” Daniel said, tapping the folder.

Peter turned the first page.

Pinned to the top was an eight-by-ten glossy photograph of an older British stage actor with sharp, intelligent grey eyes, an aristocratic nose, and a face lined with decades of theatrical gravitas.

Ian McKellen.

”He signed the three-film deal on Thursday,” Peter said, a deep sense of relief in his voice. ”His agent tried to push for a single-film option with renegotiation clauses after Fellowship, but Marcus held the line on the back-to-back commitment. Ian was hesitant about spending two full years away from London theater, but Guillermo flew to Stratford, sat down with him in a pub, and showed him the concept sketches for the bridge of Khazad-dûm.”

”He looked at the Balrog sketch for five minutes,” Guillermo chimed in, smiling warmly. ”He ran his thumb over the charcoal of the horns, looked at me, and said, ’Well, dear boy, if I don’t stand on that bridge, someone dreadful will.’ He signed the papers forty-eight hours later.”

”He’s the anchor,” Daniel said, looking at McKellen’s headshot. ”Gandalf cannot feel like a generic fantasy wizard with a pointed hat. He needs to feel like an ancient, tired grandfather who carries the weight of an entire failing world behind his eyes, and when he gets angry, you need to believe he could tear down the walls of the room.”

”Aye,” Peter nodded. ”Ian has that theatrical steel. He can deliver the high, poetic dialogue without it sounding like he’s reading from an old church sermon.”

Peter turned the page to the central character of the entire epic.

Frodo Baggins.

Daniel looked down at the photo paperclipped to the dossier.

It was Daniel Radcliffe.

In this timeline, Radcliffe had aged out of playing teenage roles years ago, which had taken him out of the running when Miller Studios launched Harry Potter with a younger cast. Instead, Radcliffe had spent his twenties carving out an intense, highly respected career in gritty London stage productions and dark, character-driven British indie films. He had pale, deeply expressive blue eyes, a slight frame, and a haunted, weathered look around the edges of his brow that gave his natural boyishness a tragic, heavy maturity.

”Radcliffe,” Daniel murmured, scanning the audition notes.

”He was the only one who didn’t play him like a jolly garden sprite, Dan,” Peter said bluntly, tapping the paper with a calloused finger. ”We saw dozens of lads in London. Most of them came in trying to be wide-eyed and adventurous, bouncing around with wooden props. Radcliffe walked into the room, sat on a wooden stool, and read the scene where Frodo looks into the Mirror of Galadriel. He didn’t raise his voice once. He just held the ring in his palm, and you could literally see the physical exhaustion and the mental rot creeping into his marrow. He has that weary, gentle innocence that makes what the Ring does to him over three films completely gut-wrenching.”

”And the physical commitment?” Daniel asked, looking up. ”Two years in the mud is going to be brutal on him.”

”He’s bloody desperate for it,” Peter chuckled. ”He told me he’d sleep in the peat bogs if it meant sinking his teeth into Tolkien. He doesn’t want polished studio roles; he wants to get dirty. The lad’s already memorizing his phonetics for the Elvish dialogue.”

”Good,” Daniel nodded, tapping the photo. ”Frodo carries the emotional spine of the entire trilogy. If the audience doesn’t buy the toll the Ring takes on his soul, Mount Doom doesn’t work. Radcliffe has the depth. Lock him in.”

”And Sam?” Daniel asked.

”Nick Frost,” Peter smiled, turning the page.

Daniel raised an eyebrow, a small smirk touching his lips. ”The guy from the British comedy circuit?”

”He’s brilliant, Dan,” Peter defended immediately, leaning in. ”Everyone knows him for making people laugh, but when you strip the comedy away, Nick has this broad-shouldered, salt-of-the-earth working-class decency that you cannot fake. He looks like a man who actually knows how to plant onions and shear sheep. His screen test with Radcliffe... God, it was pure gold. When Nick looks at Radcliffe, he doesn’t look like an actor playing a loyal servant; he looks like an older brother who would walk through literal fire just to make sure the lad gets home to the Shire. He grounds Radcliffe’s vulnerability with absolute, stubborn physical reality.”

”Good,” Daniel nodded. ”Samwise is the true hero of the story. If the audience doesn’t love Sam, the third movie falls apart on Mount Doom. If Nick has the heart, put him in the vest.”

”And the rest of the four?” Guillermo asked, pointing to two smaller headshots clipped to the bottom of the page. ”We went with young Scottish and Irish theater lads for Merry and Pippin. Billy Boyd and David Tennant.”

Daniel looked at the faces. Tennant was young, lean, with an energetic, slightly chaotic spark in his eyes that was perfect for Peregrin Took’s curious, unthinking mischief, balanced by Boyd’s dry, sensible Scottish grounding.

”They’ll work,” Daniel said. ”Make sure the dialect coaches get their accents locked to the same rural region. The Hobbits need to sound like they grew up in the same county.”

”Right,” Peter said, turning the master tab in the binder.

Now came the heavy weight. The race of Men.

The next photograph was of a man in his late thirties with a deeply lined face, a broken nose that hadn’t been reset straight, dark, tangled hair, and pale, piercing grey-green eyes.

Mads Mikkelsen.

Daniel leaned forward, studying the photo.

In this world, Mads was an acclaimed Danish dramatic actor who had made a name for himself in raw, naturalistic European crime dramas and period pieces, but had never crossed over into massive American studio tentpoles. He carried an intense, quiet, almost predatory physical presence, paired with a deep, melancholy stillness.

”Aragorn,” Daniel said, testing the name against the image.

”Guillermo found him,” Peter said, gesturing toward the Mexican director.

”He is not a pretty prince, Daniel,” Guillermo said softly, his voice full of conviction. ”That was the mistake the other studios wanted to make whenever they attempted to make a movie of this masterpiece of a trilogy. They wanted a handsome California boy with shiny teeth and blown-out hair. But Strider has been living in the freezing rain for thirty years. He sleeps in bogs. He eats dried meat and roots. He carries the shame of his ancestors like a disease. Mads has that face. He looks like a wolf that has been hunted through the woods. When he draws a sword, it doesn’t look like choreography; it looks like slaughter. And when he finally accepts the crown in the third film, the transformation from a dirty ranger to the King of Gondor will hit the audience like a physical blow.”

”Can he handle the sword work?” Daniel asked, looking at Peter.

”Bob Anderson—our master sword master—spent three days with him in London,” Peter said with a grin. ”Bob said Mads has the best physical balance and core control he’s seen since Errol Flynn. He was doing practical broadsword drills for six hours without stopping for water. He’s fully committed. He arrives in Auckland next Tuesday to start horseback training with the local stunt riders.”

Daniel tapped the photo of Mikkelsen, nodding slowly. ”That’s inspired casting, Guillermo. Truly. He’ll make Strider feel ancient.”

Peter flipped the page.

The next photo was an actor who radiated a completely different, much more tragic energy.

Sean Bean.

”Boromir,” Daniel said immediately.

”Nobody else could do it,” Peter agreed. ”Sean has that northern English grit. He’s proud, he’s heroic, but he’s deeply human. You understand why he wants the Ring. He’s not evil; he’s just a soldier watching his city burn while the Elves and Wizards sit in their ivory towers giving philosophical advice. When he dies protecting the Hobbits at Amon Hen, the audience needs to weep for him.”

”Boromir is locked,” Daniel confirmed. ”Who do we have for the Elves?”

Peter turned to the next spread.

For Legolas, they had bypassed the standard runway models and cast a young, relatively unknown Swedish actor named Alexander Skarsgård. He was tall, athletic, with a cool, detached, otherworldly stillness that looked less like a human playing dress-up and more like an ancient predator that had watched centuries of mortal men die of old age.

For Elrond, they had secured Hugo Weaving, whose sharp, architectural bone structure and deep, resonant voice carried that cold, cynical Elven authority that looked at the weakness of Men with weary exhaustion.

And for Galadriel, pinned to the center of the page, was Cate Blanchett.

”Cate saw the concept art for Lothlórien,” Guillermo said. ”The silver trees, the practical miniature canopies, the hand-embroidered robes. She signed within forty-eight hours. She doesn’t just play Galadriel; she feels like she was born in the First Age.”

Daniel flipped through the remaining profiles:

* John Rhys-Davies as Gimli—a booming, physical Welsh presence who was already preparing to spend three hours a day in heavy facial prosthetics.

* Christopher Lee as Saruman—the legendary veteran who was the only person involved in the entire production who had actually met J.R.R. Tolkien in person as a kid.

Daniel closed the plastic folder, resting his palms flat on the cover.

It was an extraordinary ensemble. There wasn’t a single vanity casting in the entire stack. Every single actor had been chosen because their bones, their voices, and their physical presence matched the ancient, mud-and-blood texture of the mythology.

”The cast is locked,” Daniel said, looking between Peter and Guillermo. ”Now, where are we building the armor?”

Peter pushed his empty beer jug aside, standing up from the table. ”Finish your pint, Dan. We’re taking the truck back to Hamilton, catching the morning flight to Wellington, and I’m going to show you where the monsters are born.”

---

The industrial district of Miramar, tucked onto a wind-scoured peninsula just south of Wellington Harbour, smelled of salt spray, industrial solvent, burning carbon, and wet asphalt.

The Miller Studios specialized effects facility—the sprawling complex that Peter and Richard Taylor had organized to handle the physical fabrication of the trilogy—occupied four converted maritime warehouses along Park Street.

Daniel walked through the heavy corrugated steel sliding doors behind Peter and Guillermo at eight o’clock the following morning.

The noise inside hit them like a manufacturing plant running at triple shift.

The air was a thick, chemical haze of vulcanized foam latex, fiberglass resin, cutting oil, and the hot, metallic smell of forge iron. Overhead, high-bay mercury vapor lights cast a harsh, industrial glow over hundreds of worktables stretching the entire length of the warehouse floor.

”Welcome to the monster factory,” Guillermo said, grinning with unbridled, wicked delight as he pulled off his coat, instantly looking like a man who had returned to his natural habitat.

They walked down the central aisle, stepping over high-voltage pneumatic hoses and exhaust ducting.

To their right was the prosthetic sculpting department.

Two dozen local New Zealand artists, along with several prosthetic masters Guillermo had personally flown in from Mexico City and Madrid, were working with fine steel loop tools over massive plaster armatures.

On the tables sat hundreds of grotesque, terrifying Orc heads in various stages of completion.

These weren’t the smooth, symmetrical digital creatures of modern sci-fi. Guillermo had pushed the team into absolute, tactile horror. Each prosthetic mask was unique—twisted, scarred, asymmetrical flesh; torn earlobes pierced with crude iron rings; yellowed, rotting teeth cast from dental acrylic; and mottled, vein-streaked skin painted in sickly shades of grey-green, ash, and bruised purple.

”Look at the skin texture, Daniel,” Guillermo said, stopping by a table and picking up a cured foam latex facepiece. It was soft, flexible, and felt disturbingly like real, dead tissue. ”We don’t use standard silicone for the background infantry. Foam latex breathes with the actor’s sweat. When the stuntmen fight under the hot lights or in the rain, the moisture seeps through, making the skin look oily and decaying. It moves with the jaw muscles.”

A side door marked **TESTING & APPLICATION** swung open with a dull clatter.

A local Kiwi stuntman, six-foot-three and built like a professional rugby lock, walked casually into the aisle.

He was in full, completed prosthetic application for an Uruk-hai Berserker.

The transformation was terrifying. His head was completely bald, scarred with ritual burns, with dead white cataracts painted over his contact lenses and a brutal, jutting lower jaw filled with jagged iron teeth. He wore twenty pounds of hand-beaten, black iron plate armor tied together with raw leather thongs, smeared with dried stage blood and real river muck.

The terrifying monster stopped in front of the water cooler, holding a delicate, pastel-pink ceramic mug with little painted daisies on the side.

”Morning, Pete,” the Uruk-hai grunted, his voice muffled slightly by the foam latex lips. ”You seen the instant coffee? Some bugger drank the last of the roast.”

Peter didn’t even blink. ”Check the lower cupboard behind the band-saw, Shane. And don’t spill water down your bib; the glue takes forty minutes to cure.”

”Right on, mate,” the monster replied, grabbing a jar of coffee granules and shuffling off toward the break table.

Daniel watched the interaction, a slow, dry smirk spreading across his face. ”Very imposing.”

”Shane’s a gentle giant,” Peter laughed. ”Grows tomatoes in Upper Hutt. But put a broadsword in his hand and yell ’action,’ and he’ll charge through a wooden door without slowing down.”

Peter guided Daniel past the prosthetic tables toward the rear of the warehouse, where the sound of rhythmic, mechanical hammering was rattling the tin walls.

This was the armor and weapons division.

Racks upon racks of hand-forged broadswords, curved Elven blades, spiked maces, and heavy iron spears lined the perimeter. In the center of the room sat four large anvil stations where local blacksmiths were actively hammering heated carbon steel over shaping horns, sparks cascading onto the concrete floor.

”Every hero sword is forged from high-carbon spring steel,” Peter explained, picking up a five-foot broadsword from a wooden rack.

It was the sword of Elendil—Narsil.

Peter handed it to Daniel.

Daniel took the grip in his right hand. The balance was astonishing. The blade was long, double-edged, with a deep fuller running down the center, but the center of gravity sat perfectly two inches above the crossguard. The pommel was solid steel, inscribed with fine, hand-chased Elvish runes that had been etched with acid and finished with a file.

”That’s real steel, Dan,” Peter said, watching him test the balance with a short, controlled wrist snap. ”When Mads swings that blade, the camera will see the flex. It doesn’t wobble like aluminum or rubber. It rings when it strikes armor.”

”And the weight for the stuntmen?” Daniel asked, handing the weapon back. ”You can’t have three hundred extras swinging eight-pound carbon steel swords for fourteen hours in the rain. Someone will take an eye out by lunchtime.”

”That’s where Richard’s team got clever,” Peter smiled, walking over to a long workbench covered in small plastic bins.

Sitting along the bench were four local women in their sixties, wearing reading glasses and cardigans, listening to the radio while their hands moved with mechanical, rhythmic speed over small trays.

They were making chainmail.

”Look at this,” Peter said, picking up a shimmering silver hauberk from a wooden mannequin.

Daniel reached out and took the sleeve.

He expected the heavy, shoulder-crushing pull of thirty pounds of linked iron wire.

Instead, the entire knee-length shirt of mail weighed barely three pounds.

”What is this?” Daniel asked, rubbing the interlocking rings between his thumb and forefinger.

”Plastic,” Peter beamed proudly. ”High-density injection-molded PVC pipe. We slice the pipe into rings, cut a tiny slit, link them by hand, and then electroplate them with real atomized silver and copper flake in an acid bath. To the camera—even in tight macro focus on 35mm—it looks like ancient, hand-linked iron mail that has seen twenty battles. But the actors can wear it for eighteen hours, climb up a mountain in Queenstown, and not destroy their spines.”

Daniel inspected the links closely. The electroplated finish was remarkably convincing. The rings had simulated oxidation around the joints, slight dings, and dark grease painted into the crevices.

”How many rings have they linked?” Daniel asked.

”Twelve and a half million so far,” Peter said, glancing at the women at the table. ”We hired half the retired ladies and university students in Wellington. They do it while watching their afternoon serials. They’ve linked enough mail to outfit three armies.”

”Brilliant,” Daniel said. ”Practical, lightweight, and it keeps the stunt budget under control.”

Guillermo called out from the far doorway, gesturing toward the adjoining warehouse bay. ”Daniel! Come here! You must see the scale of the miniature unit!”

They followed Guillermo through a heavy fire door into Warehouse 3.

The lights were dimmed. The room was the size of two airplane hangars, entirely dominated by a colossal, jaw-dropping structure rising twenty feet into the air from a timber support grid on the floor.

It was Minas Tirith.

The White City was built at 1:72 scale, carved out of high-density urethane foam, dental plaster, and brass wire.

The level of detail was hypnotic. Thousands of individual stone houses lined the concentric tiers of the city, each with hand-carved tile roofs, microscopic leaded windows, tiny stone chimneys, and narrow staircases winding through the rock. Rising from the center was the massive, razor-sharp prow of stone that split the city like the bow of an ancient battleship, crowned by the high courtyard of the Citadel and the White Tower of Ecthelion.

Hovering beside the miniature was a specialized motion-control camera rig mounted on a sixty-foot overhead steel gantry track, fitted with a custom, ultra-wide periscope lens that could skim inches from the miniature cobblestones.

”The Bigatures,” Peter said, stepping up beside the model, his eyes shining with pure, obsessive passion. ”This is how we beat the computers, Dan.”

”Explain the composite pipeline,” Daniel said, walking around the base of the model, looking up at the towering white walls.

”A computer can simulate the shape of a city,” Guillermo said, his voice dropping into that deep, professorial cadence, ”but a computer does not understand the random accidents of time. Look at the masonry on the lower gate.”

Guillermo pointed to a three-inch section of the miniature wall.

”Dante’s team took miniature hammers and chipped the stone by hand,” Guillermo continued. ”They painted microscopic moss into the north-facing cracks. They applied real dust and soot from a miniature furnace to simulate five hundred years of domestic coal fires. When Peter’s motion-control camera flies through those streets at ninety frames per second with depth-of-field blur, the human eye accepts it as absolute, indisputable reality. Then—and only then—do we drop the digital crowds of soldiers into the frame. The digital elements sit inside the practical reality, not the other way around.”

”How long to finish the terrain scans for the Pelennor Fields below the walls?” Daniel asked.

”Two weeks,” Peter said. ”Then we move the camera rig to the Helm’s Deep miniature in Warehouse 4. That one is thirty feet wide, built with a real functioning sluice gate that can unleash five hundred gallons of real water to wash away miniature siege ladders.”

Daniel stood in the dim, cavernous warehouse, looking up at the soaring white towers of the miniature city.

The scope of what was happening in these four nondescript maritime buildings was staggering.

In an era where the major legacy studios in Century City were laying off practical craftsmen, gutting their backlots, and forcing visual effects houses to generate entire worlds out of sterile green screens and digital algorithms, Miller Studios was quietly funding the largest guild of physical artisans since the Renaissance.

Blacksmiths, stone masons, knitters, sculptors, miniature painters, and equestrian trainers.

Hundreds of people, working with their hands, pouring their soul into physical objects that had weight, texture, and permanence.

Daniel turned to Peter and Guillermo.

”You have six days until the cast lands,” Daniel said, his voice steady, carrying the quiet, definitive weight of the man who held the entire empire together. ”The money is in the accounts. The Shire is planted. The armor is forged. Now you just have to shoot it.”

Peter looked at the towering white miniature, then back at Daniel, his bare feet shifting on the concrete floor. A wide, determined, utterly fearless smile broke through his beard.

”We won’t let you down, mate,” Peter said softly. ”We’re going to give you Middle-earth.”

”I know you will,” Daniel said.

---

By three o’clock that afternoon, Daniel had finished the master budget review in Peter’s cluttered office, signed the final insurance riders for the specialized aerial stunt photography over the Southern Alps, and was sitting in the passenger seat of Peter’s battered Hilux as they drove through the driving coastal rain toward Wellington International Airport.

The wipers slapped rhythmically against the glass, clearing away the sheet of water coming off Cook Strait.

Peter pulled the truck up to the curb outside the private executive terminal, leaving the diesel engine idling.

”Thanks for coming down, Dan,” Peter said, turning in the driver’s seat, extending a calloused, mud-stained hand. ”Most studio heads would have sent three underlings with spreadsheets and stayed by their pool in Beverly Hills.”

Daniel took his hand, giving it a solid, firm clasp. ”Spreadsheets don’t tell you if the stone is set right, Peter. Take care of the crew. Don’t push them past sixteen hours in the snow, and keep Guillermo away from the sugar before the Orc rehearsals.”

Peter barked a loud, genuine laugh. ”No promises on Guillermo, mate. The man eats churros like an Olympic sport. Safe flight back to California.”

”Shoot straight,” Daniel smiled, opening the door and stepping out into the wet, salty air.

He grabbed his canvas duffel from the truck bed, pulled the collar of his waxed coat tight against the wind, and walked through the glass doors of the terminal.

Ten minutes later, the private Gulfstream was rolling down the tarmac, its twin jet engines roaring against the gale as it lifted smoothly off the runway, banking hard over the grey, churning waters of the Pacific, climbing through the cloud deck into the clear, blinding sunlight above.

Daniel settled into the wide leather captain’s chair in the main cabin, kicking his heavy boots up onto the matching ottoman. The cabin was warm, pressurized, and silent.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

He took it off airplane mode.

The screen immediately flared to life, freezing for four seconds under the sheer, concussive volume of incoming data that had accumulated while he was off the grid in the Waikato.

Hundreds of emails. Dozens of missed calls.

Marcus had sent forty-two separate memos tracking the international box office numbers from Europe and Asia. The Avengers had officially crossed seven hundred million dollars globally by Sunday evening, shattering every single historical projection ever recorded in the medium. The major exhibition circuits were already projecting the film to hold ninety percent of its screens through mid-autumn, completely choking out every other release on the domestic calendar.

There were congratulatory emails from rival studio heads who were openly begging for co-distribution partnerships on future slates; notes from talent agencies trying to package their entire rosters into Miller Studios’ upcoming pipeline; and trade articles dissecting the economic empire Daniel had constructed out of thin air.

Daniel skimmed the numbers for ninety seconds.

To him, the box office was simply the fuel that kept the forge burning. The seven hundred million dollars wasn’t a score to brag about at a cocktail party; it was the resource that allowed forty-four hobbit holes to be built out of reinforced concrete in New Zealand, the resource that allowed blacksmiths to hand-forge broadswords, and the resource that allowed his studio to operate with complete, unyielding creative autonomy.

He swiped the notifications away, locking the screen, and set the phone face-down on the mahogany side table.

He leaned his head back against the leather headrest, closing his eyes as the jet leveled off at forty-one thousand feet, racing northeast across the international dateline toward the coast of California.

Behind him, in the misty green hills of Matamata, the lights were glowing behind circular oak doors, smoke was rising from real stone chimneys, and the foundation of a twenty-year legacy was set firmly into the earth.
