The Maker: Hollywood

The Sunday morning sun was high enough over Bel Air to turn the pool into a blinding sheet of turquoise, but under the wide canvas pergola, the breeze off the canyon kept the terrace cool.

The low stone table was cluttered with the debris of an extended breakfast. There was a wooden board with the rind of some soft French cheese, a basket of sourdough toast that was mostly crumbs, a jar of bitter orange marmalade, and four different coffee mugs in various stages of abandonment.

Daniel sat on the edge of a teak sun lounger, wearing faded gray sweatpants and an old navy t-shirt that had a tiny pinhole near the left collar. His hair was still damp from an early swim, falling slightly into his eyes as he looked at an iPad propped on his knee. He wasn’t checking production schedules; he was watching an aerial drone video of sheep grazing across a rolling green hillside in the Waikato Basin on the North Island of New Zealand.

To his right, the three women who currently dictated the emotional weather of his life were huddled around the other side of the stone table like a tribunal of bored, sun-drenched judges.

Margot was curled up sideways in an oversized wicker chair, barefoot, wearing a pair of Daniel’s linen shirts over her bikini, her blonde hair piled high in a messy clip. Beside her on the padded bench sat Scarlett, dressed in a faded green tank top and loose cotton trousers, her feet propped up on the low wall overlooking the lawn. Florence was lying completely flat on the outdoor sofa between them, her head resting on Margot’s thigh and her bare ankles draped casually across Scarlett’s knees, holding a glass of iced peach tea against her forehead to cool off.

Over the last few months, the dynamic had settled into something so seamless it felt almost mundane.

There had been no big sit-down conversation, no territory negotiations, no awkward Hollywood protocol. Scarlett hadn’t packed up her craftsman house in Los Feliz—she liked having her own space, her own garden, and the ability to drive away whenever she wanted complete quiet—but she spent three or four nights a week in Bel Air. Her favorite unsweetened almond milk now had a dedicated spot in the sub-zero fridge next to Florence’s artisanal preserves; there was a wicker basket in the master bathroom filled with her face oils and serums; and she had an entire drawer in the walnut dresser that Daniel had cleared out without being asked.

When their schedules aligned between shoots, Margot, Florence, and Scarlett functioned like a three-headed domestic hydra whose primary recreational hobby was making sure Daniel Miller never took himself too seriously.

”Look at him,” Florence murmured from Margot’s lap, not opening her eyes. ”He’s doing the face.”

Margot took a sip from her ceramic mug, not even bothering to look over. ”The one where his eyebrows pull together and he looks like he’s trying to solve world hunger, but he’s actually just reading a memo about portable toilets?”

”No,” Scarlett chimed in, lazily swirling the ice in her water glass with a straw. ”That’s the budget face. This is the visionary face. The chin goes up about two degrees, the jaw locks, and he starts mentally spending fifty million dollars on something totally absurd.”

Daniel didn’t look up from the screen. ”It’s forty-two million, actually. And it’s not absurd.”

”See?” Scarlett said, kicking Florence’s ankle lightly. ”Called it.”

Margot reached down, absentmindedly running her fingers through Florence’s short blonde hair, looking across the table at Daniel with a slow, amused smirk. ”Alright, Captain. What are you buying now? Did someone find another batch of vintage tanks in Czechoslovakia?”

”Land,” Daniel said, turning the iPad toward them.

The screen showed a panoramic satellite image of a massive expanse of lush, undulating farmland near the small town of Matamata, roughly two hours south of Auckland. It was miles of emerald-green pastures, ancient pine trees, and a winding natural stream that cut through the center of the valley like a ribbon.

Florence cracked one eye open, squinting against the sunlight. ”Grass. You’re buying grass, Daniel. We have grass. Look, it’s right down there by the fence.”

”It’s not just grass,” Daniel said, setting the tablet flat on the stone table so they could all see it. ”Peter and Guillermo sent the scouting report yesterday. That’s the Alexander farm. It’s twelve hundred acres of prime dairy country. Peter originally wanted the studio to sign a two-year lease so Dante’s team could dig thirty-nine temporary holes in the hills, build some plaster hobbit holes, and then fill them all back in with bulldozers when we finish shooting the third movie.”

Scarlett leaned forward, resting her chin in her hand, her eyes flicking over the terrain. ”And you don’t want to fill them back in.”

”Why the hell would we fill them back in?” Daniel asked, leaning back against the lounger. ”We’re going to be down there for two years straight. If we build temporary sets out of plywood and styrofoam, the New Zealand rain is going to rot them before we even finish shooting the second act of The Two Towers. We’d spend twenty million just maintaining fake paint.”

Margot caught the thread immediately. Her blue eyes sharpened, that shrewd commercial instinct she shared with Daniel kicking in behind the lazy morning banter. ”You don’t want to build a set. You want to build the actual village.”

”Real brick,” Daniel nodded, his tone dropping into that calm, matter-of-fact certainty he used when he was making permanent decisions. ”Real timber. Real stone chimneys, real oak doors with forged iron hinges, and real slate roofs. We hire local arborists to plant plum trees, apple orchards, and vegetable patches right now so by the time the cameras roll next spring, the moss is growing on the fences naturally. It shouldn’t look like a film set. It should look like people have lived there for five hundred years.”

”Okay, that sounds gorgeous,” Florence said, rolling over onto her stomach, propping her elbows up on Margot’s knees. ”Really, it does. But what happens when Peter yells cut on the final battle two years from now? You just own a very expensive, very rainy dairy farm on the other side of the planet?”

”No,” Daniel said simply. ”We turn it into a theme park.”

The terrace went completely quiet for three seconds, save for the sound of a sprinkler clicking on near the lower gardens.

Scarlett burst out laughing, a low, husky sound that made Daniel’s lips twitch. She shook her head, looking at Margot. ”I told you. Fifty million dollars on something totally absurd.”

”Think about it,” Daniel said, entirely unbothered by the laughter. He picked up his coffee mug, finding it lukewarm, but drank it anyway. ”What is the one thing Universal, Disney, and Warner Bros have had over me since I started Miller Studios? Real estate. Infrastructure. Physical destinations that print cash thirty years after a movie leaves theaters. A kid watches a film once; his parents spend four thousand dollars taking him to stand inside the movie for four days.”

”Daniel,” Margot said, tilting her head, her tone caught somewhere between teasing and genuine admiration. ”You want to build a theme park... in the middle of rural New Zealand? For Hobbits?”

”Not just Hobbits,” Daniel corrected. ”The Shire is just phase one. We buy the twelve hundred acres outright instead of leasing it. We build Hobbiton out of permanent stone and mortar. While we’re shooting the trilogy, the sets pay for themselves through the production budget. When the third movie comes out and becomes the biggest cultural event of the decade—which it will—we pave the roads, put in a boutique hotel, build the Green Dragon pub with real beer on tap, and open the gates. Every fantasy fan on planet Earth with a passport will fly to Auckland just to drink an ale in the Shire.”

Florence stared at him, blinking slowly. ”You’re actually dead serious.”

”I am,” Daniel said. ”Marcus ran the numbers on the land acquisition on Friday. Twelve hundred acres in the Waikato costs roughly forty-five million dollars including the water rights and zoning clearance. Building permanent stone structures instead of temporary timber adds another thirty million to the construction budget.”

”Seventy-five million dollars,” Scarlett whistled softly, raising her eyebrows. ”Just like that.”

”It’s worth it for the legacy,” Daniel said, his voice quiet, steady, and without a drop of arrogance. ”Peter and Guillermo are going to make something generational. I don’t want to tear it down when they’re done. I want it to exist forever.”

Margot looked at him for a long moment, the smile on her face softening into something deeply affectionate. She reached across the corner of the table, lightly resting her bare foot against his knee. ”You’re an absolute madman, you know that? Normal studio heads buy yachts or sports teams when they have too much money.”

”Yachts lose value the second they hit the water,” Daniel shrugged. ”Middle-earth doesn’t.”

”Well,” Florence announced, rolling off the sofa and stretching her arms over her head with a long, contented groan, ”as long as I get a lifetime pass to drink beer in the fake pub, I officially vote yes. Margot, do we vote yes?”

”We vote yes,” Margot smiled, taking another sip of her tea. ”Under one condition.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow. ”Which is?”

”You put down the iPad, you stop buying countries before noon on a Sunday, and you go inside and make us real scrambled eggs,” Margot said, pointing a thumb toward the French doors of the kitchen. ”The ones with the chives and the cream. Not the dry egg whites you eat with your terrifying trainer.”

Scarlett nodded firmly in agreement, crossing her arms. ”Seconded. If you make me eat dry chicken today, Miller, I’m calling your trainer and telling him you ate an entire croissant yesterday while he wasn’t looking.”

Daniel looked at the three of them, all staring at him with identical expressions of playful, unyielding domestic authority. He couldn’t help the dry, satisfied laugh that escaped his chest.

”I didn’t eat a croissant,” Daniel said, standing up from the lounger.

”I have photos,” Scarlett lied smoothly, tapping her phone.

”You’re a menace, Johansson,” Daniel muttered, shaking his head as he turned toward the kitchen.

”We know!” Florence called out after him, already curling back up next to Margot. ”Don’t forget the toast!”

On Tuesday morning, the tranquil, sun-drenched domesticity of Bel Air was replaced by the functional, high-pressure hum of the Miller Studios lot in Burbank.

Now, Building C was the studio’s technical heart. It was a three-story, low-profile concrete structure tucked away behind the main soundstages, housing the digital screening rooms, color timing suites, and the primary offline editing fortress.

Daniel walked through the heavy, soundproofed double doors of Editing Suite 1, carrying a stainless-steel tumbler of black coffee.

The room was vast, cool, and almost entirely pitch-black, illuminated only by the soft, ambient orange glow of backlit keyboards, three massive color-calibrated monitors on the main console, and a thirty-foot projection screen taking up the far wall. The air had that distinct, climate-controlled chill required to keep racks of high-speed solid-state drives from overheating, mixed with the faint scent of stale espresso and dry paper.

Sitting at the center of the sprawling console, looking like an exhausted captain on the bridge of a nuclear submarine, was Benny.

Benny had been cutting Daniel’s films since the very beginning. He was a small, wire-rim-glassed man in his late forties with perpetual dark circles under his eyes, thinning gray hair, and a ruthless, almost surgical instinct for dramatic rhythm. He had three empty paper espresso cups stacked neatly next to his trackball mouse.

”Morning, boss,” Benny rasped, not taking his eyes off the timeline scrolling across his center monitor. His fingers danced over the specialized keyboard with mechanical speed. ”You smell like clean air. It’s disgusting. Sit down.”

Daniel pulled up a heavy leather task chair, settling in beside him, setting his coffee down on a coaster. ”How’s the cut looking?”

”It’s looking like the money you burned on the movie,” Benny said, leaning back and rubbing his eyes with the heels of his palms. ”We have the third act assembled from the Cleveland shoot. It’s two hours and fifty-eight minutes right now. The pace is good, but the transitions between the street skirmish and the aerial dogfight around the Chrysler Building are still a little rough around the edges.”

”Let’s see the street drop,” Daniel said, leaning forward.

Benny hit the spacebar.

On the massive thirty-foot screen, the raw, uncompressed 35mm scan flared to life.

It was the shot they had spent three grueling days capturing on East 9th Street. The camera moved with sweeping, terrifying grace, skimming low over the shattered pavement as Scarlett slid beneath the bumper of the blue sedan, firing her blank pistols toward the smoke, before Daniel—in the full Captain America suit—vaulted over the hood, slamming the heavy vibranium shield down to catch the shower of concrete and shrapnel from the detonating taxi.

The image was stunning. Even without the final color grading, the practical grit was undeniable. You could see the heat haze shimmering off the real fire, the genuine concussive flinch in the background extras’ postures, and the thick, suffocating cloud of real drywall dust that rolled over Daniel’s shoulders.

”Look at that texture,” Benny murmured, stopping the playback with a click of his trackball. ”You can’t fake that in a computer, Dan. You just can’t. The digital visual effects houses in London sent over the composite plates for the alien infantry this morning. When we drop their models behind that practical smoke, it doesn’t look like an animated cartoon. It looks like a news broadcast from an invasion.”

”How are the sound stems?” Daniel asked, studying the frame.

”Burtt’s team at Skywalker Sound is building the practical hits right now,” Benny said, toggling to an audio track. ”They took the raw audio of the pneumatic piston firing under that taxi, layered it with a recording of a naval howitzer, and dropped the low-end frequency to thirty hertz. When this hits an IMAX theater, people are going to feel that car land in their teeth.”

”Good,” Daniel nodded. ”Keep the cut lean, Benny. Don’t linger on the hero poses just because we spent a fortune on the costumes. If a shot doesn’t move the momentum forward toward the portal, cut it out.”

Before Benny could reply, the heavy soundproof door at the back of the suite clicked open, letting in a shaft of bright hallway light.

Tom and Marcus walked in, both wearing sharp suit jackets, both carrying thick leather folios under their arms.

”We knocked, but the red light was on,” Tom said, closing the door behind them, letting the darkness swallow the room again. He looked at the massive screen, seeing the frozen frame of Daniel with the shield raised over Scarlett. ”God, that shot is ridiculous. Every time I see it, I forget how cold Cleveland was.”

”I don’t,” Daniel smiled without looking back. ”What do you have for me?”

Marcus walked over to the console, pulling up a rolling chair and opening his leather folio, using the faint orange glow of Benny’s keyboard to read his notes.

”The New Zealand government just sent over the finalized foreign investment package for the Waikato land purchase,” Marcus said, his voice quiet, carrying that crisp, corporate authority that ran Miller Studios’ business affairs. ”It took forty-eight hours of legal arm-wrestling with the Overseas Investment Office, but they approved the title transfer. You officially own twelve hundred acres of the Alexander farm, Dan.”

Daniel turned his chair around to face him. ”Any restrictions on the permanent construction?”

”None,” Marcus smiled, a small, triumphant glint in his eye. ”In fact, the Prime Minister’s economic council practically wept with joy when we guaranteed that the Hobbiton sets would remain standing as a permanent tourist infrastructure. They’re classifying the entire project as a national strategic heritage asset. We get a twenty-percent tax rebate on all local construction materials, provided we use New Zealand timber and local stonemasons.”

Tom chuckled from the shadow near the wall. ”Peter Jackson called me at three in the morning his time. He was literally shouting over the phone. He already has twelve heavy diggers on the property moving earth to sculpt the hill for Bag End. He said he found an ancient oak tree twenty miles away that was scheduled to be cut down by the highway department, and he’s spending tens of thousands of dollars of our money to dig up the entire root system and transplant it on top of the hill so Bilbo has the exact tree from the book.”

Daniel smiled, nodding slowly. ”That’s why he’s directing it. If a director isn’t willing to move an entire oak tree for a wide shot, he has no business making Middle-earth.”

”And Guillermo?” Daniel asked.

”Guillermo is currently living in a converted warehouse in Miramar,” Marcus said, checking his ledger. ”He has thirty local sculptors working twelve-hour shifts in cold foam latex. He sent over digital scans of the initial Uruk-hai armor yesterday. It’s brutal, Dan. Hand-beaten iron with raw leather lacings. It looks like something pulled out of a thousand-year-old peat bog. He said he refuses to let any Orc wear a clean helmet.”

”Good,” Daniel said. He leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his legs, feeling the pieces locking together with the weight of an iron vault door. ”What’s the master production timeline look like from Wellington?”

”Eighteen months of continuous principal photography,” Tom said, stepping up to the console. ”Cameras roll in April. They shoot the Shire, the journey through the wilderness, and the mines of Moria in block one. Then they move the entire company to the South Island for the massive location battles—Rohan, Helm’s Deep, and the Pelennor Fields. They will wrap the third film in late November of the following year.”

Tom paused, looking at Daniel with a mixture of awe and profound, lingering disbelief.

”Dan, do you realize what we’re about to do?” Tom murmured. ”No studio in the history of cinema has ever attempted to mount three massive, high-fantasy epics simultaneously. If this fails—if the audience rejects the first film—we are sitting on two completed sequels that cost three hundred million dollars to make.”

”It won’t fail,” Daniel said, his voice flat, completely devoid of doubt.

”How can you be so sure?” Tom asked.

Daniel gestured toward the thirty-foot screen behind them, where the raw footage of The Avengers sat paused in all its visceral, practical glory.

”Because the audience is starving, Tom, always” Daniel said softly. ”The legacy studios have spent the last few decades treating the audience like cashcows. They give them cheap CGI, cynical franchise reboots, and movies made by committee to appease marketing executives. We don’t do that. We give them real fire. We give them real earth. We give them stories that treat the characters with absolute reverence. When people see the Shire—when they realize that every blade of grass, every stone chimney, and every piece of armor was made by human hands who cared about the mythology—they will show up. And they will keep showing up for twenty years.”

Marcus closed his leather folio with a soft, definitive snap. ”The financing is locked, Dan. The checks are cleared. Middle-earth belongs to Miller Studios.”

”Good,” Daniel said, turning back to the console. ”Now let’s finish this cut. I want the first rough assembly of the battle of New York locked before the weekend.”

By 7:30 PM, the long shadows of the Burbank evening had settled over the lot. The soundstages were dark, the production offices were emptying out, and the cool California twilight was painting the sky in deep shades of violet and dusty rose.

Daniel walked out of the post-production building, his shoulders loose, his mind pleasantly tired from eight solid hours of editorial rhythm. He had his jacket slung over one shoulder, breathing in the dry, warm evening air.

Parked near the executive curb was a low-slung, dark gray Porsche 911.

Leaning against the driver’s side door, holding a pair of dark designer sunglasses in one hand and scrolling through her phone with the other, was Scarlett.

She had spent the day on Stage 4 doing pickup dialogue looping in the ADR studio, but she had completely shed the working-actor persona. She was wearing a simple, beautifully tailored black silk wrap dress that fell just below her knees, a light leather jacket draped over her shoulders against the evening chill, and low heels. Her hair was styled in soft, natural waves, catching the warm amber glow of the streetlamps.

As Daniel walked down the concrete steps of Building C, she looked up, locking her hazel-green eyes onto his.

A slow, dazzling, entirely unhurried smile spread across her face.

”Well,” Scarlett murmured, slipping her phone into her small leather clutch as he approached. ”Look who finally decided to leave the batcave.”

”I was working,” Daniel smiled, stopping two feet away, looking down at her. ”You’ve been waiting long?”

”About twenty minutes,” she said, tilting her head up, her gaze tracing the line of his jaw. ”Marcus told me you were in there basically rebuilding the movie frame by frame with Benny. I was about to walk in and pull the master power breaker just to get you out into the sunlight.”

”Benny would have had a stroke,” Daniel chuckled.

”Benny needs to go home to his family,” Scarlett countered playfully. She reached out, her fingers lightly catching the lapel of his jacket, stepping into his space with that effortless, practiced confidence that was entirely her own. ”And you need to take me to dinner. You promised me pasta on Sunday, and then you spent forty-eight hours buying New Zealand instead.”

Daniel looked down at her, feeling the warmth of her hand against his chest, the lingering exhaustion of the editing bay completely evaporating in her presence. Over the past few months, what had started as an electric, dangerous spark on a cold Cleveland street had transformed into an anchor.

”I bought the land,” Daniel said softly, his voice dropping into that low, intimate register. ”And the pasta is already handled. Margot and Florence booked the private back room at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica for eight-thirty.”

Scarlett’s eyes lit up with genuine delight. ”The back room with the corner booth?”

”The corner booth,” Daniel nodded. ”The white truffles just arrived from Italy yesterday. Florence threatened to set the kitchen on fire if they didn’t hold three portions for us.”

Scarlett laughed out loud, a rich, throaty sound that echoed off the quiet studio facades. She shook her head, her fingers curling slightly into his shirt before letting go. ”I love those women. I really do. Half the time I think I’m coming over to Bel Air just to see what kind of dessert Flo has invented.”

”You’re using me for pastry,” Daniel noted deadpan.

”Obviously,” Scarlett smirked, stepping around him toward the passenger side of her car, tossing her car keys lightly into the air.

Daniel caught them in one hand with effortless reflex.

Scarlett paused at the passenger door, looking across the roof of the Porsche at him, a sharp, knowing, intensely alluring glint in her eyes.

”You drive, Captain,” Scarlett said softly, slipping into the passenger seat. ”I had to listen to myself screaming in an ADR booth for six hours today. I’m off duty.”

Daniel smiled, walking around the hood of the car and sliding into the low leather driver’s seat.

The engine started with a deep, throaty purr that vibrated through the chassis. He backed out of the studio space, navigating the quiet avenues of the Burbank lot, heading toward the security gates that opened out into the sprawling, electric sprawl of Los Angeles.

Beside him, Scarlett rested her hand casually on the center console, her fingers lightly brushing against his knuckles as the cool canyon air rushed through the cracked windows.

And ahead, on the coast, the table was waiting.

Daniel shifted into third gear, feeling the power of the machine beneath his hands, and accelerated smoothly into the California night.
