The Maker: Hollywood

The line for the 7:00 PM Thursday IMAX preview at the AMC Burbank 16 stretched all the way past the escalators, down the outdoor courtyard, and wrapped around the corner near the Barnes & Noble.

Standing right by the velvet ropes, holding a phone mounted on a heavy-duty motorized gimbal with a ring light blasted straight into his face, was Kian.

If you were over thirty-five and worked at a traditional talent agency, you probably didn’t know who Kian was. But if you were between sixteen and twenty-eight, Kian was essentially the center of the universe. His channel, KianLive, pulled over eighty thousand concurrent viewers every time he turned his camera on. He wasn’t a film critic. He didn’t write essayistic breakdowns about auteur cinema or cinematography. He was just a twenty-three-year-old kid from Jersey living in an apartment in Glendale who reacted to culture in real-time.

Hollywood publicists secretly feared him. When Kian called a movie ”boring,” thirty thousand teenagers canceled their weekend plans. When Kian got hyped about a trailer, tickets sold out nationwide in twenty minutes. He was the unfiltered barometric needle of internet box office tracking.

”Chat, look at this line,” Kian said, turning the gimbal around so his phone camera could sweep across the massive, buzzing crowd. The stream overlay in his ear was chiming every two seconds as sub notifications rolled in. ”Look at this shit, bro. It’s seven in the evening on a Thursday. People took off work for this. My boy over there in the denim jacket has been standing here since three PM.”

He flipped the camera back onto his face. He was wearing a black hoodie with the sleeves pushed up his forearms, his hair a little messy, eyes darting down to the chat scrolling at warp speed on his secondary phone screen.

”Now look,” Kian said, tapping his chest. ”We all know Daniel Miller dropped that insane trailer weeks ago. He hit us with the psychological thriller reveal out of nowhere. No warnings, no months of teasers, just straight-up dropped Leo in a 1950s suit looking like he hasn’t slept since 2004. But I’m keeping it a buck with you guys. If this movie is two hours of people just talking in a dark room with no payoff, I’m gonna call it out. I don’t care if Miller has two wives and billions of dollars, I will tell you if it’s trash.”

The chat on his screen exploded.

”Yeah, yeah, spam your L’s,” Kian laughed, waving his hand at the screen. ”Look, the trust situation is legendary, alright? Man signed some paperwork and is now chilling in a mansion with Margot Robbie and Florence Pugh while we’re standing in line at an AMC in Burbank. Total alpha move, respect to the king. But right now, we’re here for Shutter Island. The ushers are starting to scan tickets. I gotta kill the stream so security doesn’t tackle me. I’m leaving my rig in the locker. I’ll be back live from the car the second the credits roll. Do not leave the stream. We are going to break down every single frame. See ya in two hours.”

Kian hit the ’End Stream’ button, unscrewed his phone from the gimbal, and slipped it into his pocket. He took a deep breath, adjusted his hoodie, and stepped into the line.

Inside Auditorium 8, the air was warm and smelled like artificial butter and popcorn seasoning. All four hundred and fifty seats were taken.

There was no phone usage. Nobody was texting. When the lights dimmed and the metallic, deep bass boom of the Miller Studios logo hit the massive screen, a collective, electric shiver went through the room.

From the very first frame, the theater went dead quiet.

It wasn’t the kind of quiet where people were bored. It was a heavy, suffocating silence. The opening shot of the ferry emerging from the thick, white fog bank over the dark water set a tone that felt almost physical.

When Leonardo DiCaprio appeared on screen, pale, sweating, and throwing up into a rusted toilet, a girl three rows behind Kian let out a soft, involuntary, ”Oh, wow.”

The movie pulled the air straight out of the room. There were no cheap jump scares. There were no CGI monsters jumping out of shadows. It was just an escalating, agonizing tightening of a vise grip. Every time Leo’s character, Teddy Daniels, walked down a peeling green hallway of Ashecliffe Hospital, the audience leaned forward in their seats, completely gripped by the dread.

Kian sat in row H, his hands flat against his knees. He had forgotten about his stream. He had forgotten about his chat. He was completely locked into the screen.

The sound design was doing psychological violence to the crowd. The low, screeching brass notes during the hurricane sequence made the floorboards under their feet vibrate slightly. You could feel the damp, freezing rain in Massachusetts radiating off the screen.

Then came the third act. The lighthouse.

When Ben Kingsley sat down across from Leo and laid out the chalkboard with the anagrams—when the horrible, inescapable reality of Andrew Laeddis smashed into the story—the theater didn’t just gasp. It felt like two hundred people simultaneously lost their breath.

A guy two seats down from Kian leaned back hard in his chair, his hands coming up to clutch his head. ”No way,” the guy whispered, his voice cracking. ”No fucking way.”

The tension reached a fever pitch during the final scene on the stone steps.

The rain had stopped on screen. The morning light was pale and cold. Mark Ruffalo sat next to Leo, handing him a cigarette.

The dialogue played out. Leo looked out over the lawn at the orderlies holding the hidden lobotomy tools behind their backs. He stood up slowly.

He delivered the line.

”Which would be worse... to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?”

Leo walked toward the doctors. Ruffalo called out his name, his face breaking into total heartbreak as he realized what Teddy—Andrew—was choosing to do.

The screen cut hard to black.

The credits rolled in complete silence.

For ten solid seconds, nobody in Auditorium 8 moved. Nobody stood up to beat the parking garage traffic. Nobody grabbed their coat. People just sat in the dark, staring at the white text scrolling up the black screen, trying to process the absolute mind-fuck they had just experienced.

”Holy shit,” someone in the front row said loudly into the quiet.

That broke the spell. A massive, roaring wave of applause erupted across the theater. It wasn’t polite clapping; it was wild, loud, aggressive cheering. People were standing up, shaking their heads, turning to their friends with wide, shocked eyes, talking over each other at top volume.

Kian stood up, his heart pounding in his chest. He didn’t even grab his empty soda cup. He just pushed through the row, heading straight for the exit doors, his mind racing.

Ten minutes later, Kian was sitting in the driver’s seat of his humble black Honda Civic on the third floor of the AMC parking garage.

He had his phone mounted back onto the dashboard rig, the dome light of the car turned on, casting a harsh yellow light over his face. He hit ’Go Live.’

Within thirty seconds, the notification pinged his followers, and the viewer counter spiked violently: 12,000... 34,000... 68,000... 91,000.

The chat box on his laptop mounted on the passenger seat was a total blur of scrolling text.

VFX_Jake: WHAT WAS IT KIAN TELL US

MovieFanatic: IS IT A W OR AN L???

SaltyPretzel: BRO LOOKS TRAUMATIZED LMAO

DankMemes420: HE GOT LOBOTOMIZED BY DANIEL MILLER

Kian just sat there for ten seconds, staring directly into the camera lens, his hands resting on the steering wheel. He didn’t say a word. He just let the chat go crazy.

Finally, he leaned forward, pressing his face close to the phone.

”Chat,” Kian said, his voice quiet, completely stripped of his usual hyperactive streamer persona. ”Chat, listen to me right now.”

He slammed his hand hard against the steering wheel.

”WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK DID I JUST WATCH?!” Kian yelled, his voice echoing in the concrete parking garage. ”WHAT WAS THAT?! BRO! DANIEL MILLER IS A TERRORIST! HE IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL TERRORIST!”

The chat speed doubled.

GigaChad_22: LEO COOKED DIDN’T HE

”Is it good?” Kian read the chat out loud, grabbing his phone screen. ”Is it good?! Chat, it is a masterpiece! It is an absolute, top-tier, god-level masterpiece! I am officially apologizing to Daniel Miller. I don’t care if he marries five more women in Nevada. I don’t care if he buys an island and names it after himself. The man is a genius!”

Kian leaned back in his seat, rubbing his face with both hands.

”Bro, Leo’s acting,” Kian continued, pointing a finger at the camera. ”Leo put his whole entire soul into this movie. You think you’re watching a detective story, right? You think he’s investigating some missing crazy lady. And then the third act hits you like a freight train. My brain is literally fried, chat. I’m sitting in the theater, and when the chalkboard scene happened, I felt my soul leave my body.”

He looked over at the passenger seat, reading the rapid questions flying by.

PepePlsno: no spoiledgee plex

PopCultureGod: Did he get set up by the doctors or was he actually crazy???

User_8823: SPAM 1 IF HE WAS CRAZY SPAM 2 IF IT WAS A CONSPIRACY

The chat instantly flooded with millions of 1s and 2s, completely split down the middle.

”See?!” Kian shouted, pointing at the laptop. ”Look at the chat! Half of you think he was set up, half of you know he was crazy! And that final line! ’To live as a monster, or to die as a good man?’ Bro! He knew! He was cured at the end, but he couldn’t live with the fact that he killed his wife after what she did to the kids! So he pretended to still be crazy so they would lobotomize him! He chose to die as Teddy instead of living as Andrew!”

Kian threw his hands up in the air.

”He chose the lobotomy, chat! He chose it! That is the dark, depressing, beautiful writing right there. No superhero landing, no happy ending where they save the day. Just pure, unfiltered cinema. I’m giving this a ten out of ten. Go buy your tickets right now. If you don’t see this in IMAX, you are throwing.”

He paused, looking at a specific chat message.

SaltyPretzel: How does this compare to Captain America though?

”How does it compare?” Kian read out loud. ”Bro, you can’t even compare them! That’s the crazy part! Daniel Miller went from acting in the biggest superhero movie on the planet to making a dark, terrifying, 1950s mind-fuck, and he nailed both of them! The range is absurd. Anyway, I’m driving home before I get a panic attack in this parking garage. Go see Shutter Island. Peace out.”

He cut the stream, slumped back in his leather seat, and just stared at the concrete wall in front of him, the ending line still ringing in his head.

By Friday morning, the internet wasn’t just talking about the movie—it was completely consumed by it.

The box office numbers for Thursday night previews started trickling into the trade desks at seven in the morning. By noon, the projections weren’t just beating expectations; they were obliterating them.

The r/movies megathread on Reddit became the most active post in the history of the subreddit.

[Official Discussion] Shutter Island (SPOILERS)

I just got out of an 8:00 AM screening. My jaw is still on the floor. That final line from Leo changes the entire movie. He wasn’t relapsing. He chose the lobotomy because he couldn’t live with the guilt of what happened to his family. It’s a suicide by medical proxy. Absolutely devastating.

u/AuteurFanatic

The visual storytelling is insane. Did anyone else notice that throughout the whole movie, water triggers his migraines and panic attacks? Water represents the lake where his kids died. Fire represents his delusion (he sees his dead wife in flames, the cave scene with the fake Rachel, etc.). Daniel Miller buried so many details in the background. Second viewing is mandatory.

u/GamerBro_2000

Can we talk about Mark Ruffalo? The whole movie he’s playing the ’new partner,’ but on a second watch, you realize he’s constantly watching Leo to see if the delusion is breaking. When Leo hands him the cigarette on the steps at the end and calls him ’Chuck,’ Ruffalo looks at the doctors and just shakes his head slightly. He was heartbroken that his patient ’relapsed.’ The acting is incredible.

The tracking numbers for this weekend are going to be historical. An R-rated, two-and-a-half-hour psychological thriller pulling these kinds of preview numbers is unheard of. Daniel Miller really took a break from superhero blockbusters just to flex on every auteur director in Hollywood.

u/PopCultureObsessed

I love how two days ago everyone was arguing about Daniel’s two wives, and now everyone is arguing about psychiatric lobotomies in the 1950s. The man completely redirected the entire global news cycle in 48 hours.

Over on Twitter, the chaos was even louder, fueled by memes, screenshots, and viral clips.

‘SHUTTER ISLAND’ achieves a rare 98% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes following Thursday night previews. Critics are calling it Leonardo DiCaprio’s finest performance to date.

@FilmUpdates

Box Office Update: ‘SHUTTER ISLAND’ is currently tracking for a massive $105 MILLION domestic opening weekend. This would mark the highest opening weekend for an R-rated psychological thriller in cinema history.

Rival studios are officially clearing out of November. Universal and Paramount have both shifted their upcoming mid-budget releases to avoid competing against the massive word-of-mouth momentum of Daniel Miller’s latest hit.

At 2:00 PM Pacific Time, the Burbank lot was humming.

Inside the executive corner office on the second floor of the Miller Studios administration building, Tom was sitting behind his desk, scrolling through an email thread with the international distribution team.

Elena walked in, holding a fresh tablet and a single printed sheet of paper. She had a wide, genuine grin on her face. She walked up to Tom’s desk and slid the paper right over his keyboard.

”Comscore just finalized the Friday matinee numbers,” Elena said, tapping the top of the page. ”They officially revised the weekend projection.”

Tom picked up the paper, his eyes scanning the bold black numbers. He let out a low, impressed whistle, leaning back in his leather chair.

”One hundred and five million,” Tom said, shaking his head with a wide smile. ”Are you kidding me? For a two-and-a-half-hour movie where the main character gets a lobotomy?”

”The exit polls are unbelievable, Tom,” Elena laughed, crossing her arms. ”The word-of-mouth is doing all the heavy lifting. People are walking out of the theater completely mind-blown and telling everyone they know to go see it. A hundred and five million for an R-rated psychological thriller isn’t just good, it’s industry-breaking. We’re literally rewriting the ceiling for this genre.”

”That’s exactly what he wanted to do,” Tom said, feeling a massive surge of pride for his best friend. ”He wanted to prove he didn’t need a cape or a spaceship to pull a hundred million on an opening weekend. The trades are going to lose their minds on Monday.”

”They already are,” Elena pointed out. ”Deadline just posted an article calling it the boldest pivot in modern cinema. And Universal officially moved their comedy off our weekend. They didn’t even put up a fight.”

”Smart of them,” Tom grinned. He reached down and unlocked his desk drawer, pulling out his secure satellite phone. ”I gotta call Dan. He’s gonna be thrilled.”

Elena gave him a two-finger salute and walked out of the office to get back to the PR team.

Tom dialed the direct line to the Bel Air estate. It rang three times before the connection clicked open.

”Tell me the internet is still arguing about the lighthouse scene,” Daniel’s voice came through the speaker. He sounded relaxed, but there was an edge of anticipation in his voice.

”Oh, they’re writing literal dissertations on Reddit right now,” Tom laughed, putting his feet up on the desk. ”But that’s not why I’m calling. Comscore just locked in the weekend projection.”

”And?” Daniel asked.

”One hundred and five million, domestic,” Tom announced, letting the number hang in the air.

There was a brief silence on the line. Even for Daniel, who had overseen some of the biggest franchise releases in history, pulling $105 million on a dark, adult-oriented, non-IP thriller was a staggering accomplishment. It was absolute validation. It proved the audience trusted him enough to follow him into the absolute darkest corners of storytelling.

”One hundred and five,” Daniel repeated, his voice dropping into a quiet, deeply satisfied tone. ”Hell yes.”

”Hell yes is right,” Tom said, beaming. ”You did it, man. You made a gritty, practical 1950s noir and it’s doing blockbuster numbers. The cultural footprint on this thing is going to be massive.”

”It’s because they didn’t see the ending coming,” Daniel said, the creative pride clear in his voice. ”They’re going back to theaters to see what they missed. That was the whole design.”

”Well, the design worked flawlessly,” Tom said. ”The studio is in overdrive, but we’ve got it handled. Just enjoy the win, Dan. You earned this one.”

”Thanks, Tom. Seriously,” Daniel said warmly. ”Send my best to Marcus and Elena. I’ll see you guys on Monday.”

”See ya, boss.”

The line clicked off.

Back at the Bel Air estate, the late afternoon California sun was casting long, lazy shadows across the manicured lawn. The air was warm, smelling faintly of the canyon pine trees and the clean scent of the swimming pool.

Daniel set his phone down on the small glass patio table. He was sitting in a cushioned wicker chair, wearing a faded gray t-shirt and swim trunks, a massive, genuine smile on his face.

A few feet away, sitting under the deep shade of a canvas umbrella, Stan Lee was lounging in a plush armchair. He had a copy of Variety resting on his lap and his signature tinted glasses on his face.

”Good news?” Stan asked, looking up from his paper.

”Yeah,” Daniel nodded, running a hand through his hair. ”Tom just called. The weekend projection is a hundred and five million.”

Stan let out a sharp, joyful laugh. He folded the newspaper neatly and set it on the side table.

”A hundred and five million for a mystery picture!” Stan cheered, his eyes crinkling behind his glasses. ”I told you, Danny! I told you they wanted a real story. Everyone in this town thinks audiences only want explosions, but you gave them a real, terrifying mystery and they showed up in droves. I couldn’t be prouder of you, kid.”

”Thanks, Grandpa,” Daniel said, feeling a deep, grounding warmth at the old man’s praise. It was the ultimate artistic validation.

A loud splash erupted from the deep end of the pool, sending a spray of water over the stone deck.

Florence broke the surface, wiping her wet hair out of her face. She swam over to the edge, hooking her arms over the tile rim and looking up at the patio.

”Was that Tom?” Florence called out, treading water.

Margot drifted over a second later on a massive inflatable flamingo, wearing a sleek black one-piece swimsuit and oversized dark sunglasses.

”Yeah, it was Tom,” Daniel answered, standing up and walking over to the edge of the pool. He looked down at them, a triumphant grin on his face. ”Hundred and five million.”

Margot actually dropped her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose, her eyes going wide.

”Wait, seriously?” Margot asked, genuinely shocked. ”Dan, that’s insane! For an R-rated thriller? That completely shatters the projections!”

”I told you the depressing stuff sells,” Florence laughed loudly, splashing the water in celebration. ”People love to suffer in theaters! Oh my god, Leo is going to be so smug about this. He’s going to text us all night about how his method acting paid off.”

”He earned it,” Daniel smiled, crouching down on the edge of the stone deck. ”We all did. It was a massive swing, and it connected.”

Margot paddled the flamingo closer to the edge, reaching out to rest a wet hand over his. Her smile was incredibly warm and full of pride.

”You took a risk,” Margot said softly, looking up at him. ”And you proved you can do literally anything you want in this industry. I’m so incredibly happy for you.”

Daniel looked down at her, then over at Florence, who was beaming at him.

The media storm was still raging outside their gates. The internet was still tearing itself apart trying to solve the ending of his movie. But right here, sitting on the edge of the pool with the sun setting over the canyon, everything felt perfectly aligned. He had taken the hardest creative pivot of his life, and the world had rewarded him for it.

”So,” Daniel said, looking between the two of them. ”How do we want to celebrate?”
