Chapter 2487: Chapter 2488: At a Loss for Words

”When I was poisoned, everyone thought I was dead and wanted to bury me. If it weren’t for you saving me, I might have wanted to die but couldn’t even do so in a coffin. I remember all this, so whatever you ask of me, I’m willing to repay you. It’s just that She Zongyi is my teacher, I...”

The Second Prince spoke laboriously, taking quite a long time to finish such a lengthy statement. By the end, his eyes were slightly red, and his expression was somewhat pained.

Bai Ruozhu paused, suddenly feeling she might have been a bit hard on the patient, and indeed, she was making things difficult for him.

After all, he had known the teacher for many years, and She Zongyi had been someone who supported him. Their relationship was, undoubtedly, more than ordinary. Why would he trust her after just a few words?

Even if he did trust her, emotionally it was a difficult choice. If a few words from her could lead the Second Prince to kill a teacher who had been with him for ten years, then it would only show that the Second Prince was cold-blooded and ruthless.

”You should rest well. Don’t think about these things for now.” Bai Ruozhu sighed and left, but the Second Prince couldn’t help but think. He stayed in the medicine barrel, dazed for a long time before slowly falling asleep.

In the following days, Bai Ruozhu told the Emperor that the Second Prince’s detoxification had stabilized, and there was no fear of interference, but his safety still needed protection.

”This, this is wonderful! Does that mean his mother can come to see him now?” the Emperor asked excitedly.

Bai Ruozhu smiled, ”Yes.”

In fact, it wasn’t that the Second Prince was immune to tampering now, but Bai Ruozhu and others had discussed it and deliberately said so.

On one hand, once the enemy received the message, most would stop using those small tricks. These days they had made the yard almost impenetrable, yet still, someone tried to interfere.

For instance, a little nearly tasteless water grass juice was hidden in the core of the delivered radishes, or a bit of other drug powder was mixed in the flour. If Bai Ruozhu hadn’t personally cooked and checked the ingredients, they might really have been fooled.

On the other hand, losing hope of ruining the detoxification, the opponent might resort to desperate measures, and that’s what they were waiting for.

But Bai Ruozhu didn’t explain this in detail to the Emperor; it wasn’t safe around him, and she didn’t want such a pig-like teammate anymore.

The Emperor had just left when Empress Yazi and Princess Ya’an arrived.

Bai Ruozhu greeted them with a smile and led them inside. Empress Yazi scrutinized Bai Ruozhu and had a maid present a set of gold jewelry.

”Thank you, Lord Bai, for saving Cilang, but I’m sorry I’ve never been able to thank you, and that was rude of me.” Empress Yazi said, bowing to Bai Ruozhu, her attitude very courteous.

”No need to be so formal, Your Majesty. I had my difficulties restraining you from visiting him before. It’s enough that you don’t blame me,” Bai Ruozhu replied with a smile.

Empress Yazi quickly responded, ”How could I blame you? You were thinking of the Second Prince’s safety.”

”Thank you for understanding, Your Majesty. Let me take you to see the Second Prince.” Bai Ruozhu led the way, and soon brought them to the main hall where the Second Prince was being treated, stopping them at the hall entrance.

”Please wait here, both of you. Although the Second Prince’s detoxification is going well, he’s still soaking in a medicinal bath, and it’s best not to approach him too closely,” Bai Ruozhu said.

Empress Yazi’s eyes filled with compassion, ”Alright, alright, I’ll just talk to Cilang from here.”

The Second Prince saw his biological mother after so many days, and his eyes also reddened, ”Mother, it’s my unfilial behavior that worried you.”

”Silly child, it’s not your fault. As long as you’re getting better, I can be at ease.” Empress Yazi said, wiping her tears.

As the family spoke, Bai Ruozhu really didn’t want to be in the way, but since the Second Prince hadn’t fully recovered and there were no Emperor’s guards present, she kept an eye on their safety.

”I’ll be able to stand soon. Lord Bai said I could walk within a month, so please don’t worry,” the Second Prince said with a bright smile, not wanting his mother to worry.

Princess Ya’an, standing next to Empress Yazi, said, ”Mother, please stop crying, or else it’ll make brother uncomfortable.”

When she spoke, the Second Prince glanced at her, and then his expression darkened.

”Mother, how could you let Ya’an marry Wen De?” the Second Prince suddenly asked.

”Do you want your sister to leave the imperial family? Or marry Sheng De... the Crown Prince?” Empress Yazi’s expression turned somewhat grim when mentioning the Crown Prince but quickly composed herself upon realizing Bai Ruozhu was there, refraining from directly naming him.

”I...” The Second Prince stopped, looking at Princess Ya’an with eyes full of pity and reluctance.

Bai Ruozhu, standing by, seemed like a background figure, trying to minimize her presence, but inside she was wondering why the Second Prince’s eyes seemed so strange to her.

”Brother, don’t blame mother. This is my own decision. This way I can stay close to both mother and brother, right?” Princess Ya’an said with a cheerful voice, as if she wasn’t opposed to the engagement with Wen De. However, upon hearing this, the Second Prince’s face grew even more upset.

Seeing him unhappy, Empress Yazi quickly changed the topic, saying, ”Your maternal family is also very worried about you and wants to visit. When would be a good time?”

The Second Prince didn’t answer directly, but looked at Bai Ruozhu and asked, ”What do you think, Lord Bai?”

Bai Ruozhu nodded, thinking he was indeed a well-behaved patient, knowing to consult the doctor’s opinion.

”In a couple of days. Your condition needs to stabilize, try not to get too tired, and especially don’t overthink things.”

”Alright.” The Second Prince agreed.

Empress Yazi, watching all this, felt a little uncomfortable. She wasn’t particularly clever, so her thoughts showed on her face, subtly revealing her unease.

Princess Ya’an noticed this and gently tugged her sleeve, saying, ”Mother, brother’s health is the most important thing. Let them visit the palace in a few days, okay?”

”Alright.” Empress Yazi came to her senses, somewhat reluctantly agreeing.

After a few more words, the Second Prince suggested they return to rest. Though Empress Yazi was reluctant, worrying her presence might affect the Second Prince’s health, she eventually left first. However, as she left, her attitude towards Bai Ruozhu was not as warm as when she had arrived, even somewhat cold.

”My mother values my maternal family, so don’t take it to heart,” the Second Prince said apologetically to Bai Ruozhu. ”I also acted somewhat improperly a moment ago.”

If he hadn’t directly asked Bai Ruozhu, perhaps his mother wouldn’t have been upset. His mother...

The Second Prince couldn’t help but sigh.

Bai Ruozhu smiled, ”Why should I care about how Empress Yazi feels about me? Even if she dislikes me, how could it affect me?”

The corner of the Second Prince’s mouth twitched. This was clearly saying that his mother couldn’t do anything to her. This attitude was simply too arrogant, yet he was lost for words, even internally agreeing that what she said was true.
