Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1990: Chapter 1989: River Water and Fu Yiyi

A man with blisters and oozing sores on his neck suddenly shouted, ”Catch that woman doctor, she’s the one who boasted and deceived us! Catch her and the guards will surely open the door!”

Then, many of the patients attacking the doctor surrounded Bai Ruozhu, and Lord Mu anxiously called out, ”Stop it, all of you, we’re here to help you, calm down!”

Bai Ruozhu squinted her eyes, observing the patients to see if there were any spies among them.

The first person quickly rushed forward, and she raised her leg and kicked him away. He screamed and flew backwards.

Right after, she threw the second person to the other side with a quick move, and soon the third and fourth were also knocked to the ground by her.

The people at the back stopped. Only then did they realize that the woman doctor before them was not as frail as she appeared.

”If you don’t want to die, sit down right where you are, or don’t blame me for being impolite!” Bai Ruozhu glared, ”Anyone who dares to move recklessly will be treated as a traitor and executed mercilessly!”

With a cold face and eyes filled with killing intent, she immediately subdued the crowd.

Only one man, in a fit of rage, rushed over, shouting, ”I don’t want to stay here, let me out, I’m not sick!”

Bai Ruozhu raised her hand, and with a scream, the man fell to the ground, dislocating an arm.

”My arm, it hurts! Murder! Murder!” The man seemed to go mad, screaming as he shouted.

Bai Ruozhu ignored him and looked at the others, ”If you don’t want to end up like him, return to your places. The newcomers have been emotionally manipulated into making trouble, do you want to join in the foolishness?”

Many people looked dumbfounded at those who had been knocked aside by Bai Ruozhu. Weren’t they the ones who had just arrived today? They were the first to rush at Bai Ruozhu.

”What good is it for you to escape with them? Your skin is already ulcerating, do you think leaving will heal it?” Bai Ruozhu continued with a cold face, ”Don’t you have family or friends? You might feel a moment’s relief, but if you spread the infection to more people, eventually you’ll harm your family and friends. Can your conscience bear that?”

Everyone silently returned to their places, hanging their heads without a word.

Some women, scared, fearing Bai Ruozhu would take revenge, began to sob quietly, not daring to cry aloud.

An elderly man suddenly spoke up, ”Lord Bai, why are those newcomers behaving like this?”

Bai Ruozhu had noticed him before; he hadn’t joined the others in causing trouble and had even tried to dissuade two people next to him. When he couldn’t, he just sat there sighing.

”They probably weren’t bribed but were poisoned, which made their emotions volatile and anxious, hence their outburst,” Bai Ruozhu said.

However, the one who first shouted had been in the quarantine zone from before, using the new patients as an excuse to affect everyone’s emotions at once.

Bai Ruozhu deliberately didn’t mention him, pretending not to have noticed this matter.

”Poisoned? How could that be?” the old man asked in shock.

Bai Ruozhu smiled, ”You don’t need to worry, focus on getting well, leave other matters for the government office to investigate.”

Then she made a gesture for the doctors to start treatment, but many were so scared they just sat there for a while.

Bai Ruozhu had to take the lead and treat the patients herself, and the old doctor Mu hurried to join, followed by the other doctors.

Morning treatments ended quickly, and Bai Ruozhu secretly instructed Jianqi to arrange for two dark guards to disguise as doctors to enter the quarantine zone monthly, both to ensure the safety of other doctors and to monitor the suspicious male patient.

Having arranged this, Bai Ruozhu began to wander around Linchuan City with Jianqi.

Gugu and the others found nothing wrong with the well water, suggesting the opponent is well hidden.

Additionally, today’s disturbance confirmed that a Gu master was causing trouble. However, although this master’s poisonous insect poison is more potent and varied than before, their skill in laying the Gu was not as advanced.

”Master, I still remember this river. It’s where you once saved Fu Yiyi,” Jianqi remarked upon seeing the river in Linchuan City.

Bai Ruozhu nodded. She had a deep impression of Linchuan City because she first passed through and saved a girl, pushed into the water by her cousin, during the water lantern festival. That girl was Fu Yiyi, who later wrongly thought Bai was unwilling to take her in and hated her. Fu Yiyi later got involved with the Masked Man and died in the Leng Palace.

To this day, Bai Ruozhu could not confirm if the Masked Man she saw in the Leng Palace was King Rui, as she felt he couldn’t have appeared in the Inner Palace at that time.

The name Fu Yiyi suddenly jumped out at her, startling Bai Ruozhu. Could it be that Fu Yiyi never died and returned to cause trouble?

Back then, when Fu Yiyi fell into the water, the townspeople, caught up in superstition, said the River God chose her, and no one would save her. Bai Ruozhu and her group saved her, only to be blamed by the people for angering the River God.

So it was understandable Fu Yiyi held a grudge against the people of Linchuan City. Moreover, Bai never saw Fu Yiyi’s body; who knew if she truly died?

With this thought, Bai Ruozhu felt she had a direction and said to Jianqi, ”Come, let’s check by the river.”

She inspected by the river for a long time, collected a bottle of river water with an empty bottle, and returned to their residence.

Unexpectedly, Ding Ji was waiting in the yard, and upon seeing her, he greeted her with trembling hands, ”Lord Bai, I heard the patients caused trouble, and you were startled. Were you injured?”

”I’m fine; they couldn’t harm me,” Bai Ruozhu replied, returning the courtesy, ”Sir Ding, there’s no need to be nervous, let’s discuss inside.”

She had someone pour tea for Ding Ji. Rushing in without drinking water, he drank three cups in one go to moisten his throat, his expression easing.

”Lord Bai, it was my lack of proper arrangements that caused you trouble,” Ding Ji apologized.

”Let’s put that aside for now. Sir Ding, I’d like to ask, have many people been going to the river lately? Do the townspeople draw water from the river?” Bai Ruozhu inquired.

Ding Ji replied earnestly, ”The city has been under lockdown recently, the people barely go out, and hardly anyone should have been to the river. Many homes in the city have wells, and those without wells at home can draw from communal wells in the town center, so rarely does anyone fetch from the river.”

”But are the wells in the city connected to the river?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

”They draw on groundwater and river water, most are interconnected,” Ding Ji answered.

Bai Ruozhu frowned. If the river water was tampered with, the whole village might be doomed since everyone drinks it daily.

Could the problem lie elsewhere?
