Chapter 1988: Chapter 1987: Reinforcements for Linchuan City

Look at what you’re saying. Elder Su at most let her follow to help, there’s no way she said that last part. Zu Mei has a grudge against Bai Ruozhu, that’s why she’s deliberately stirring trouble.

Bai Ruozhu glanced at her indifferently. She neither disliked nor liked Zu Mei. She even felt a bit of sympathy for Zu Mei, seeing her as a victim of past events. But she also looked down on Zu Mei for targeting Ao Song with such a vindictive attitude. Why drag innocent younger generations into their elders’ grudges?

Moreover, Zu Mei must already know what her mother did, yet she refuses to admit her mistakes. Now that she has a husband, can’t she just let go of the past?

If she keeps obsessing over it, it will only make her current husband think she hasn’t forgotten her ex-husband, creating a rift in their relationship.

”Zu Mei, don’t speak so ambiguously. Jiao Ling gives you some face, but I’m not easy to bully. If you’re not happy, don’t follow us; we don’t need your help.” Fen Jiu was not one to take insults, and she countered back directly with a few words.

”What did I do wrong? I’m here helping on the orders of Elder Su, is that a crime?” Zu Mei said with a cold face.

”We were ambushed last time, but it was due to a spy’s betrayal. You don’t need to keep bringing it up. As far as I know, Zhong Qi has some familial ties with your family, right?” Fen Jiu sneered twice.

”You...” Zu Mei’s face turned red with anger.

Jiao Ling hurriedly stepped between the two and said, ”Alright, alright, we’re here to do important work and save the distressed people, not to squabble. I understand you’re angry, Zu Mei, but don’t drag the younger generations into it. Ao Song has helped Ruozhu several times, and Ruozhu couldn’t possibly shut him out. Besides, Ao Song has already left, and arguing with younger people now will only make people laugh at your lack of grace.”

Bai Ruozhu silently cheered in her heart; her aunt’s words were excellent, using logic to overpower Zu Mei.

Zu Mei’s face turned bright red, ”Enough talking, let’s go.”

She was indirectly admitting her mistake.

The group arrived at the gathering point, all the doctors had assembled. Bai Ruozhu saluted the crowd and expressed her gratitude, then arranged for the manager to distribute the horse carriages.

Due to a large number of doctors signing up at the last minute, Bai Ruozhu selected thirty people. The horse carriages filled eight or nine vehicles. Together with the escort cavalry, they departed majestically from Beiyu City.

The news of Bai Ruozhu leading a team to Linchuan City to combat the plague had spread, and on the way out of the city, citizens lined the road to send them off. Some even offered food, which made Bai Ruozhu feel both amused and touched.

Not to mention the basket of large radishes, which she couldn’t eat on the road.

But she soon had an idea and said to Jianqi outside the carriage, ”Tell people to collect the food the citizens have given, and distribute it to the needy in Linchuan City. That place has suffered a disaster, so I’m sure supplies are tight.”

”Yes.” Jianqi immediately relayed the instructions, and the citizens who heard this were even happier, knowing they had contributed to the disaster-stricken area.

Shortly after the team exited the city gate, a horse-drawn carriage caught up from behind. The waiter driving the carriage shouted, ”Sir, these are medicinal materials donated by my master, please accept them graciously!”

Kuai Feibai, leading the team, stopped and asked, ”Who is your master?”

”My master said he doesn’t want recognition for doing good deeds, otherwise he’d have donated them in the city. I’m off now; these medicinal materials are for Linchuan City.” The waiter dismounted and ran back towards the city gate after speaking.

Kuai Feibai cautiously had someone inspect the sacks on the carriage. Confirming they were indeed herbal medicine, he assigned someone to drive the carriage to join the team.

Bai Ruozhu, hearing some commotion up ahead, had Jianqi inquire about it. Once Jianqi reported back, Bai Ruozhu thought for a moment and said, ”Ask Lord Kuai to mark those bags of medicinal materials. We’ve agreed that purchased medicinal materials will be marked with a red circle, and donated materials with a green triangle. Please mark them accordingly.”

Soon Jianqi conveyed Bai Ruozhu’s instructions to Kuai Feibai, who marked the bags appropriately.

From Beiyu City, they traveled non-stop to Linchuan City, which would take about three days. The time flew by as the group journeyed from their confident start, gradually growing tense and anxious.

As they drew closer to Linchuan City, the roads became emptier. Stories about the city’s plague spread, becoming ever more incredible. Some even claimed the Emperor’s army had incurred divine wrath, as the army passed through Linchuan City and then the plague broke out.

Bai Ruozhu thought the claim was absurd. If it were true that the army was at fault, wouldn’t the plague have hit the military instead of Linchuan City?

Still, she grew a bit nervous at the possibility of a master of poisonous insects infiltrating the army. What would they do then?

Fortunately, the adversary hadn’t penetrated the army, suggesting it was highly difficult. Besides, with Gao Deng there, Bai Ruozhu felt somewhat reassured.

On the evening of the third day, the team finally reached Linchuan City. The city gate was firmly shut, emanating a forlorn and heavy atmosphere.

Kuai Feibai sent someone to call the gate, and the guard captain personally opened it, exclaiming excitedly, ”You’re finally here, Linchuan City is saved!”

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the time for catch-ups. The team entered the city and was quickly arranged for lodging.

Seeing the empty streets, everyone felt even more uneasy.

”How many people in Linchuan City are infected with the plague now? What proportion of the city’s population? Where are the patients being housed?” Bai Ruozhu asked the welcoming captain after disembarking.

”I’m just in charge of greeting you esteemed guests and don’t know the exact numbers. Our magistrate will be here soon; he will explain to you,” the captain answered nervously.

Bai Ruozhu nodded, realizing she was being a bit hasty.

When they arrived at the residence, Magistrate Ding Ji was already waiting at the door.

After initial greetings, Bai Ruozhu asked Ding Ji the previous questions.

”There are currently forty-eight infected. Thanks to your written directives sent to all regions previously, we promptly isolated the patients. We also used medicine soup to wash the roads and houses and separately quarantined those in contact with the patients, slowing the plague’s spread. However, one or two new cases still appear daily,” Ding Ji answered.

Bai Ruozhu nodded, ”You’ve done well. Now let’s go see the patients.”

Ding Ji was slightly taken aback, not expecting Bai Ruozhu to continue without resting, especially as night was falling.

Bai Ruozhu ignored him and said to the other doctors, ”I’ll select five to go with me now. The rest should eat and rest to be in top shape for treating patients tomorrow.”

Those who hadn’t encountered a plague before were deeply shaken upon seeing infected individuals, especially a group of them. Bai Ruozhu didn’t want them to be fully frightened.

In the end, she took Jiu Sheng, Guoguo, Doctor Mu, and two other somewhat respected doctors to the quarantine zone.
