Chapter 1961: Chapter 1960: Second Brother’s Intentions

Bai Zepei’s expression was calm, with neither sadness nor joy, merely watching Bai Yibo as if this person had nothing to do with him.

”Enough!” An aged voice rang out, instantly drawing everyone’s attention.

Bai Guanghe’s body trembled slightly, appearing extremely angry.

”Since you’ve come to make trouble for Yihong and the others again, let me make things clear. This is all my fault, and I’ve caused suffering for their family.” Bai Guanghe spoke with sadness in his eyes, looking even older.

”Father...” Bai Yuanshan worriedly supported him, but he waved his hand, ”I’m fine, let me speak clearly.”

Most of the guests present were from the Capital City, and they had heard about Bai Ruozhu’s family and Bai Guanghe’s family, but neither family had ever formally spoken about it, so it wasn’t appropriate for them to inquire. Today, it seemed like they could hear quite a bit of gossip.

”You guessed correctly, Bai Yihong is my eldest son, born of my first wife, Jiao, to blame my folly years ago for favoring a concubine over my wife, allowing Jiao to be schemed against by the concubine several times, eventually fleeing from the Bai Family, and giving birth to the eldest son outside.” Bai Guanghe spoke, tears streaming down his face.

Not far away, Bai Ruozhu sighed. Bai Guanghe didn’t mention his parents’ favoritism, nor Bai Yuanqing’s matters, attributing all the fault to himself. After all, he had some sense of responsibility. Though ”favoring a concubine over a wife” is just four words, it was a grave error at this time.

In respectable families, one mustn’t favor a concubine over a wife, and the woman’s family could even report to the Government Office, the man might be dismissed, or even convicted.

Not far away, the second brother glanced at Bai Ruozhu, slightly raising the corner of his mouth.

Bai Ruozhu suddenly realized, from the beginning, the second brother didn’t plan on dealing with Bai Yibo and his son too severely; he had specifically invited those two people in to observe Bai Guanghe’s behavior!

She took a deep breath, ”The second brother is truly mischievous; today is his great marriage day! What if Bai Guanghe hadn’t stood up? Wouldn’t causing such embarrassment affect his reputation and his standing with the Si Family?”

Seeing the second brother so confident as if he’d calculated everything, Bai Ruozhu felt the urge to punch him, especially since she had secretly taken out some hangover medicine in case he got too drunk.

”Yihong was entrusted to a common family in Mountain Village. Jiao hoped he would study and learn, sending a large sum of silver to Scholar Bai Fu to ensure Bai Yihong was well educated, so that if he succeeded in the Imperial Examination, he could be recognized and reconnect with his family.” Bai Guanghe’s expression changed as he glared fiercely at Bai Yibo, ”But Bai Fu, being selfish, used the silver solely for his own son’s education while making the foster son do hard labor for the family, hiding his true background and even pawning his ancestral Jade Pendant!”

He pointed at Bai Yibo, ”Your father didn’t come today, or else I’d directly beat him up. How dare you bark here about Yihong’s family’s lack of filial piety? For shameless, untrustworthy people like you, where does filial respect come from?”

He then turned to Bai Lu and said: ”Everyone, this is the head of the Bai Family Sect. He can testify to the hardships Yihong’s family has endured over the years. After investigating, I felt more and more ashamed to acknowledge my eldest son’s family. I do not expect their forgiveness, only that they live peacefully without being burdened by past events.”

Bai Lu hurriedly stood up and bowed to the crowd. Though somewhat nervous, his age lent him gravity, and he said solemnly: ”You can go to Mountain Village or Fengye Village to verify; Bai Yihong’s family has never forgotten the kindness of nurturing, helped build a Clan School for the sect, and supported many young members. They have continually sent pension money to Bai Fu’s family despite the harsh treatment, though Bai Fu’s family is never satisfied!”

He pointed at Bai Yibo and said, ”He is lazy and doesn’t strive for improvement, cheated during the Imperial Examination buying test questions, and nearly implicated the entire sect when caught. Yet, he still claims others wronged him. Can you trust such a person?”

Sanlang unhappily shouted, ”Clan leader Grandpa, you can’t just favor whoever has money. At your age, you shouldn’t be so superficial!”

Bai Lu’s eldest son, Bai Yixiao, jumped up, ”Shut up; is this how you speak to your elders? I think we’ve been too lenient with you today; you should’ve been thrown out long ago!”

He gave a discreet signal to Bai Yixing, and the two of them walked over, one grabbing Bai Yibo by the collar and the other grabbing Sanlang, dragging them out.

Bai Guanghe and Bai Yihong exchanged glances, and Bai Yihong simply stood up to support Bai Guanghe, choking up as he said: ”Father, sit down and rest, let bygones be bygones.”

The guests were still engrossed in Bai Guanghe’s words and hadn’t even noticed the jumping clowns, Bai Yibo and his son, despite their shouting. How could they, who never did any manual work, be a match for Bai Yixiao and Bai Yixing?

At this time, Elder Su stood up and said loudly: ”I am an elder of the Jiuli Clan’s Disciplinary Hall. The first wife Jiao, mentioned by Bai Guanghe, is indeed from our Jiuli Clan, and Bai Yihong’s family descendants of Jiuli, are certainly not from dubious backgrounds. Today is Bai Zepei’s grand wedding from our clan, I ask you all to give due consideration, and watch over the young ones in the future. I thank you all here!”

He casually clasped his hands, but no one dared to think his gesture was perfunctory. People of the Jiuli Clan, let alone an elder of the Jiuli Clan, possess a highly esteemed status.

Of course, no one dared to doubt Elder Su’s words, for no one dared to impersonate the Jiuli Clan. Any impostors and those benefiting falsely faced severe consequences; the Jiuli were certainly a mysterious and powerful presence on this continent.

The crowd looked at Bai Yihong and Bai Zepei with increasing interest. No wonder the Bai Family descendants were extraordinary; they were of Jiuli ancestry!

Prime Minister Si was taken aback then showed great delight, finding he had chosen too well in selecting this son-in-law for his granddaughter! Stroking his beard with satisfaction, he truly believed his judgment was impeccable.

The guests, realizing, promptly reciprocated Elder Su’s gesture and assured him they had noted his words.

Bai Ruozhu looked at Elder Su, smiling gratefully, confirmed what she’d heard of the Jiuli Clan’s strong familial loyalty, which Elder Su exemplified.

The wine feast continued lively and bustling; the guests no longer brought up the two troublemakers, but their gaze toward Bai Guanghe became somewhat peculiar.

Favoring a concubine over a wife, in these times official families scoffed at such acts. Even if one favored a concubine greatly, it was merely playful, and not to the extent of harming the primary wife.

Moreover, that primary wife was from the Jiuli Clan. That the Jiuli Clan hadn’t sought retribution against Bai Guanghe was indeed magnanimous.

Bai Yuanshan looked at his father with some sadness; he was well aware of much from back then, primarily his late grandparents’ dislike of Jiao Yunyun due to her ambiguous identity. It was ironic, given what they now knew, would they have enough self-awareness to slap themselves?
