Chapter 1975: Chapter 1974: Who Stands to Gain?

”Bai, Bai lord, you can’t retaliate like this, you’re acting out of personal interest rather than in public office,” Tian Chen said fearfully.

Bai Ruozhu laughed, ”Aren’t you consulting at Fushou Hall? Why suddenly leave Beiyu City, unless you’ve done something shady?”

”I’ve taken on patients from out of town, just going on a call, why feel guilty?” Tian Chen’s eyes darted around, he seemed restless, or he wouldn’t have taken money to do such things.

Bai Ruozhu chuckled and said to Jianqi, ”He claimed my cosmetics were problematic, why not apply them on him, let him see clearly if there’s indeed an issue.”

As she spoke, she tossed a small box to Jianqi, Jianqi opened it, revealing pearl powder-like substance; knowing his master’s poisons were potent, he dared not touch it, holding his breath, he sprinkled it on Tian Chen’s face.

Tian Chen attempted to dodge, but pressed by Jianqi couldn’t move, finally getting a face full of fine powder, resembling a comical character from Beijing opera.

”Pah, pah.” He spat out forcibly what had entered his mouth, ”Lord Bai, you can’t do this, Lord Han won’t let you off.”

”Very well, I’ll wait for him, but shouldn’t he let you off either,” Bai Ruozhu laughed, her smile as pretty as a flower, yet Tian Chen shuddered harshly.

Soon, he found his face itching, as if bugs were crawling all over, usually just one bug on the face, yet his felt like dozens crawling, the itch growing more intense.

”This powder is problematic, your powder is problematic!” Tian Chen screamed with fear.

Bai Ruozhu sat at the head, smiling as she said, ”Didn’t you prescribe a formula for Ji An’s sickness? How about prescribing one for yourself?”

Tian Chen wanted to argue, but the itching sensation grew so severe, making speech impossible.

Itching was more uncomfortable than pain, he reached to scratch, Bai Ruozhu signaled, Jianqi quickly sealed acupoints, making Tian Chen’s extended hand immobile.

The itch was bone-deep, he wished to scratch his face off, but his hand didn’t move, failing to stop the bone-deep itch.

He cried painfully, yet weakly, nowhere near the demeanor of a composed middle-aged man, more like a wronged child.

After holding back for a while, he couldn’t take it, strenuously saying, ”Please... I was wrong...”

Bai Ruozhu’s fingertips twitched, easing some of the poison, Tian Chen felt better, although still itchy, better than before the extreme itching.

Now, his eyes were full of fear, realizing he’d provoked someone terrible, killing him would be better than this torture.

”Speak, better than suffering more,” Bai Ruozhu said.

”If you detoxify me, I’ll explain clearly. I don’t want to die!” he said through gritted teeth.

”Do you think you have the right to negotiate? You intended to escape Beiyu City, so even if dead, no one would know, only thinking you fled far away,” Bai Ruozhu said, coldly laughing, ”Even if Han Zhiyong knew, do you think he’d bother me for your sake?”

Tian Chen’s face went pale, knowing Bai Ruozhu was right.

”Fine, I’ll speak, as long as you let me go,” Tian Chen said.

Bai Ruozhu laughed, ”That depends on your performance.”

Tian Chen felt a tightness in his heart, dared not delay, immediately confessing clearly.

”It was Ma Linglong who approached me, offered me two hundred taels of silver, and spent a night with me,” Tian Chen said, eyes flashing hate, regretting lusting over Ma Linglong, helping her, thinking he’d slept with an official’s wife, feeling proud, now realizing it was all misfortune!

”I never contacted Lord Han, but Ma Linglong said she had leverage against him, following her command; he sent someone to Fushou Hall specifically picking me,” Tian Chen cautiously said, ”The words I said were Ma Linglong’s orders, not my own will, Lord Bai please let me off once.”

Bai Ruozhu squinted, assumed Ma Linglong was frivolous with Saihan pre-marriage, but upon marrying Ji Bao, Ji Bao seemed infatuated; yet she wasn’t living properly, even spending a night with Tian Chen.

Wondering how many men she’s slept with.

”Alright then.” Bai Ruozhu replied with a smile.

Tian Chen breathed a sigh of relief, ”Lord Bai merciful, thanks!”

”Once you testify and reveal the truth completely, I will let you go.” Bai Ruozhu added.

Tian Chen’s face fell instantly, ”I, I can’t go to public hall, she’ll kill me.”

Bai Ruozhu sneered, ”That’s up to you, refusing can get you killed now; offending her or me, choose wisely.”

Then she slapped the chair back, laughing, saying, ”Look at my memory, I won’t kill you, just make life worse than death.”

Tian Chen felt the itch intensifying again, not wanting to experience it, hurriedly shouting, ”I’ll testify, I’ll testify!”

”Don’t say I didn’t warn you; just mention Ma Linglong, no need for extra details,” Bai Ruozhu added.

Tian Chen quickly understood, thinking Han Zhiyong hasn’t violated rules, not bribing doctors, could claim ignorance of Tian Chen’s bribery by Ma Linglong, there’s no evidence of their affair.

Moreover, Bai Ruozhu doesn’t want to act against Ma Tongfang presently, just uncover Han Zhiyong’s leverage.

”Alright, I’ll listen to Lord Bai.”

...

Night descended; in a corner of Ji Residence, Ji An secretly wiped tears inside the room, a maid brought in Decoction, ”Miss, it’s time for medicine.”

”Put it down, I’ll take it later; you go ahead,” Ji An sent the maid away, then quietly poured the medicine soup out the window.

Uncertain of Bai Ruozhu’s intent with their actions, faintly felt she shouldn’t drink this medicine.

At this moment, light taps sounded outside the window, a pleasant voice came, ”I’m coming in.”

Ji An’s body trembled, it’s the voice of Lord Bai she met during the day!

Soon, Bai Ruozhu deftly jumped in, Ji An stared wide-eyed, envy in her eyes, unaware Lord Bai had Martial Arts, far surpassing her skill.

Next, her expression dimmed again; she’s merely a humble concubine daughter, her life was set like this.

”There’s more medicine you didn’t drink, otherwise the face would worsen,” Bai Ruozhu pointed at her face.

Ji An showed fear, ”That doctor is incompetent?”

Bai Ruozhu knew she trusted her now; otherwise wouldn’t let her enter without raising alarm.

”Lacking medical ethics; consider, if your face worsened, or grew severe, who benefits, who suffers?” Bai Ruozhu asked.
