Return of the Antagonistic Lady Boss

Chapter 1178: Chapter 1150: Why Is Qian Crying? (700+ Monthly Tickets Update)

Yu Minglang had no doubt that if he didn’t quickly let go of Qian, the platter of fruit in his mother-in-law’s hand might soon be heading toward his face.

”Minglang, working all day must be quite tiring, right? Come on, get up and have some fruit.” Qian’s mom feigned enthusiasm as she called out.

”Not tired.” Being apart from his wife was what’s tiring!

The little person inside Yu Minglang roared.

”Mom! Why don’t you knock before coming in?! When are you going to change this bad habit!!”

Qian was exasperated with her mother; even at home, she never knocked and always barged into Dalong’s room, and now she was doing the same in her own place! This old lady had never had much class in her life!

Qian’s mom shot her a glare. The nerve of this girl!

”Come on, Minglang, have some fruit, and Qian’er, you eat too. You’re supposed to eat more now and not press too hard on your belly, you know?”

The implication in those final words couldn’t have been more obvious.

Yu Minglang couldn’t sit still anymore. The suggestion to eat fruit was enough to make him want to escape before his forthright mother-in-law said something even more blunt, so he grabbed his phone as an excuse and headed to the living room.

As soon as he left, Qian’s mom immediately locked the door and sat next to Qian, but before she could speak, Qian started talking.

”Mom, can you be more mindful? Luckily Xiaoqiang is easy-going and not too picky. If he were the kind of guy who held grudges, wouldn’t your barging in without knocking bother him? Dalong will be looking for a wife in a few years too. If you don’t change this habit, don’t come crying to me if the in-laws don’t get along!”

”Is it me who’s not being careful or you all? Let me tell you, while the baby isn’t settled in, you two shouldn’t be all over each other!” Qian’s mom handed the fruit platter to Qian, not forgetting to use her own experiences as a cautionary tale.

”When I was carrying you, I didn’t pay attention to those things, so you were sickly as a child, constantly falling ill. I blame your good-for-nothing father! Also, you shouldn’t fight with Minglang while you’re pregnant. I suspect your brother’s dullness is because I fought with your good-for-nothing father while carrying him.”

Qian’s mom had often analyzed why her two children had such different personalities and intelligence levels, ultimately concluding it was all affected during pregnancy.

”Why do you tell me everything?” Qian said with a laugh and tears, noting how brutally honest her mom was, no wonder Xiaoqiang ran off.

Though Xiaoqiang hadn’t complained, Qian felt a bit uneasy about it. Her mother constantly nagging her about pregnancy taboos, regardless of whether they made scientific sense, just cluttered her mind, and if Qian didn’t follow her advice, she’d continually nag at her.

Generational gaps in parenting experiences were inevitable, and sometimes Qian’s mom handled things less than ideally. With her around, Qian felt a bit pressured and missed the quieter days. She wanted to tell her mom to go back, but didn’t know how to bring it up.

She could only look down at the fruit platter. Eh, there was a melon?

”Mom, why did you buy melon in this season? Didn’t you always say out-of-season fruits aren’t good?” Qian took a bite, and it was indeed not tasty. She took one bite, put it down, and switched to an apple.

”It’s because I was thinking of you. When I gave birth to you, I went through a lot, and you almost died when you were young. I don’t want my daughter to repeat my old path. Qian’er, how about I don’t leave and stay to take care of you until after the baby comes and your postpartum? How about that?”

”Uh... as you can see, I’ve got everything here, and so many people taking care of me, you should hurry back.”

Qian thought of how her mom had finally established a new family, and if she stayed for a year and a half on this side, even if Uncle Liao had no objections, she’d feel bad. Besides, if her mom took care of her like this, then what about Liumei?

Even though she was a stepmother, if the treatment was too different, it wouldn’t be fair. Besides, the family had her little aunt, so her mom’s presence mainly contributed to the nagging and awkward chats with her son-in-law. She also wanted a bit of peace and quiet.

”I’m worried about you, Qian’er. Do you think I was frightened? The day your brother had his accident, I lay in bed and had a dream. I dreamt you were pregnant with no one to care for you, it broke my heart to see it.”

It was because of that dream that Qian’s mom was paying extra attention; she felt bad upon waking.

Qian chuckled, ”Why would you dream about me when he had an accident?”

”I don’t know! I just felt sleepy after giving your brother blood, and dozed off into a dream, seeing you without money or care, pregnant and living in a rundown place. In winter, unable to pay for heating, you used an electric blanket under your duvet. It broke my heart; I wondered how I could watch my daughter end up in such a state. I tried so hard to reach you, but I couldn’t...”

Although it was just a dream, thinking about the scene still brought tears to Qian’s mom’s eyes, the dream felt so real.

She saw her invincible eldest daughter like a neglected child, with no one to care for her during pregnancy, and barely enough to cover hospital expenses when giving birth. Waking up from the dream, Qian’s mom’s heart felt heavy for a long time.

At first, Qian listened with a laughing expression, dissing her mom for making a mountain out of a molehill because of a dream, but gradually, she couldn’t continue smiling.

”Mom, what else did you dream?”

”I also dreamt that as you walked past a fruit stand, you eyed a melon. It was expensive, and you put it back after looking, continuing on. When I woke up, I felt bad. Why couldn’t my daughter even afford the things she craved?”

So today, when buying fruit, Qian’er’s mom specifically bought some melons, though her daughter didn’t seem to like them.

”I thought since you craved them in the dream, you’d eat more now. Oh well, a dream is just a dream, not real. I’ll slice what you’ve had a bite of and send it to your brother.” Qian’s mom was about to get up, but Qian hugged her tightly.

”Mom...”

”Oh, oh, why are you crying? If you can’t let go, I won’t give it to your brother. Don’t cry! Even when he eats, it’s your leftovers; everything is all about you!” Qian’s mom had no idea why Qian was crying, thinking it was just a little tantrum.

Qian didn’t speak, just fiercely hugged her mom and cried.

The things her mom talked about weren’t dreams; they were things that had happened in her past life!

In her past life, when she was pregnant with Xiaowei, conditions were tough, and she lived frugally. At that time, she was filled with resentment for her own family, hating her deadbeat father and the bias her mother showed towards her brother, neglecting her. In reality, her mother was already in dire straits; her father left her mom with nothing, and living in the countryside, struggling with illness, she couldn’t even care for herself, let alone Qian.

Hearing the maternal love in her mother’s voice, Qian thought of all the grievances and the bond between them, feeling guilty toward her mother, she couldn’t help but cry.

Her crying brought Yu Minglang and Dalong rushing over. Dalong hopped in with a limp, but Yu Minglang was faster, rushing straight in.

”What’s wrong with Qianbao?”
