Death Game: Starting as a Trickster, Pretending to Be a God

Chapter 415: A Familiar Item

After studying Fernʼs movement route, Lin Yuʼs search range was somewhat narrowed.

But ultimately, it wasnʼt reduced by much. After all, the fact that Fern could meet him on the very first night meant her starting point wasnʼt far from his to begin with.

So, to find the Healing Station, he still had to continue using the clumsy method of searching, and it would still depend on luck.

At times like these, Lin Yu missed Chen Zhuo immensely—though it was a bit metaphysical, Lin Yu always felt that if that little fatty were here, he might just stumble upon the Healing Station spawning right in front of him after taking a few steps.

The God of Fate might not exist, but within the game, there seemed to be a certain intangible ”fortune” that could influence many things.

After all, many items and professional abilities were related to luck.

After a period of exploration, it was already noon...

Lin Yu hadnʼt even caught a glimpse of the Healing Station.

The wilderness paths were already difficult to traverse, and along the way, he kept encountering contestants and beasts locked in slaughter. Avoiding them to prevent unnecessary trouble required extra effort.

Especially since the bone-chilling cold and fierce winds from last night in this area had completely vanished after the sun rose. Now, wearing animal hide with two layers of clothes underneath, Lin Yu only felt unbearably hot under the scorching sun.
The sunlight was so vicious it could be described as downright malicious!

”Next time, I really should spend some points to buy something like a ʼConstant Temperature Talismanʼ or a ʼTemperature-Control Suitʼ,” Lin Yu thought. To maintain his persona, he was now so hot he was almost seeing spots, but he still hadnʼt taken off the animal hide coat, nor had he shown any sign of losing composure. ”You gotta save where you can and spend where you must...”

If not for his currently robust physique and astonishing endurance, Lin Yu felt he would have suffered heatstroke long ago.

If he had to fight someone under these conditions...

Lin Yu felt that last 30-minute Ice Blessing would definitely not be something he could save.

Who would have thought the reason heʼd need to use this blessing would be for ”cooling down”...

Just last night, he felt the buffs were plentiful enough, but now it seemed they were still far from sufficient.

However, Lin Yu felt somewhat balanced inside, because Fern on the other side wasnʼt faring much better either.

This woman, wearing leather clothes with a somewhat dashing aura, was now drenched in sweat, her damp hair plastered to her face, completely devoid of any grace.

Yet even so, Fern still hadnʼt removed her mask—even when eating roasted meat last night, she had cut it into small pieces, lifted her mask, and stuffed them into her mouth.

Lin Yu was somewhat curious about her reasons for doing this. While many players didnʼt want to reveal their appearance, few were as persistent as Fern.

Itʼs just that his current persona didnʼt really allow him to ask.

Due to considerations of ”feeling indebted after receiving two giant beast trophies last night” and Lin Yu appearing to be a fairly reliable teammate, Fern didnʼt raise any objections to Lin Yuʼs plan to search for the ”Healing Station.”

But after wandering around all morning under the midday sun, Fern finally couldnʼt take it anymore.

Wiping the sweat from her face, she spoke.

”Moro, Brother Moro, I say, our method of searching like this isnʼt working, is it!”

”Our carpet-style search is too inefficient.”

Lin Yu looked at Fern and spoke calmly, ”But I donʼt have any other methods. Sorry, Iʼm not very good at finding things.”

This was actually a lie. After all, if he truly wanted to urgently find the ”Healing Station,” Lin Yu had quite a few items that could shorten the journey.

For example, the Active Map.

But Lin Yu was currently playing the role of ”Rakshasa”—an NPC, and an NPC who had just recently escaped prison and returned to his hometown. How could he possibly have items to use?

Even things that didnʼt look like typical player items, Lin Yu couldnʼt use too many.

After all, while he needed to go to the ”Healing Station,” it wasnʼt that urgent.

Hot as it was, the performance of his persona couldnʼt collapse!

This is what you call professionalism.

Moreover...

Didnʼt this very situation make Fern hot and impatient enough to speak up?

Seeing Fern take the initiative to speak, Lin Yu knew she must have come up with an idea—sometimes, if you donʼt push someone, you never know how capable your teammate beside you really is.

Sure enough, Fern spoke with a sigh.

”I have a method on my side that can only be used twice per dungeon, and itʼs somewhat unstable and requires a certain cost...”

”But it seems this dungeon doesnʼt have many puzzles either, so using it to ask where the Healing Station is might not be a bad idea.”

Lin Yu was very curious but maintained an expression of seeming to understand yet not fully.

”Is that so? But using such a trump card-like method just to ask for directions, isnʼt that too extravagant?”

”Weʼre not in that much of a hurry, are we?”

Fern quickly shook her head. ”Itʼs not about time. Iʼm just too tired, too hot—anyway, Iʼll just use it. After all, I didnʼt contribute much yesterday.”

Lin Yu nodded. ”What method is it?”

”Itʼs something that can answer any question you have, practically omniscient,” Fern explained. ”I got it from the dungeon before last... I planned to sell it during the next opportunity, but since I happened to have no time to offload it last week, Iʼve been using it for now.”

”Omniscient,” Lin Yu expressed surprise. ”Then why would you want to sell it... Could it be related to the ʼinstabilityʼ you mentioned earlier?”

As Lin Yu asked, Fern nodded with a pained expression. ”Yes. For the two questions you ask it, it is bound to answer one truthfully and one with a lie. But you cannot tell which answer is the truth and which is the lie.”

Hearing the description of this thing, Lin Yu instantly found it somewhat familiar.

This characteristic was extremely similar to a certain high-ranking entity with a mischievous streak that he knew.

But Lin Yu couldnʼt show any recognition.

He just looked at Fern and then pondered, ”That doesnʼt sound too unstable, though. You could lock in the ʼanswerʼ by asking it two consecutive questions, couldnʼt you?”

”You just need one arbitrary question for which you already know the precise answer, and one question whose answer you want to know. Then, rephrase the question you want answered into a yes-or-no question. Wouldnʼt that allow you to reliably get an answer to a yes-or-no question?”

”That would essentially transform two uncertain unknown questions into one certain known question.”

”Moreover, if your first question is one you know the answer to, and you can determine from the response that it told a lie this time, your second question wouldnʼt even need to be a yes-or-no question anymore.”

Lin Yu spoke calmly. Fern was stunned.

”Huh? What youʼre saying... actually makes some sense?”

”I actually never thought of that.”

At this point, Fern looked at Lin Yu with gratitude.

”Thank you so much, Moro... So youʼre not just good at fighting;youʼre also quick-witted!”

As she spoke, Fern took out that item from her bosom.

And just as Lin Yu expected, just by its appearance, that item was inextricably linked to a certain deity.

It was a...

thumb-sized, stone-carved gray crowʼs head.

”Caw! Caw caw!”

After being taken out, the crowʼs head let out cheerful cries!
