Death Game: Starting as a Trickster, Pretending to Be a God

Chapter 405: “Official” and “Con Artist”

The activation of ʼClassʼ abilities often defies common sense in many ways.

ʼEnhancement Typesʼ are somewhat understandable, merely violating ordinary physical laws.

But ʼSkill Typesʼ and ʼRule Typesʼ can often be described as ”bizarre” the moment they take effect.

For example, the ʼThiefʼ who can instantly make something appear in their hand by ”activating their ability,” or the ʼDoctorʼ whose ”healing” feels more like making injuries and illnesses vanish into thin air...

As for ʼRule Types,ʼ they border on causality manipulation.

They can often instantly modify and correct everyoneʼs perception. Even higher beings capable of recognizing ”Players” and the ”Game” are not immune.

Beings at the level of Divine Agents or even deities themselves, while able to resist such modifications to some degree, seem to be forced to helplessly acknowledge the fact that rules have been nullified, tampered with, or newly added.

Itʼs like directly acting upon some intangible ”World Will.”

Just like the ʼOfficialʼ ability Lin Yu obtained through deception before, which could even nullify the abilities of a monster like ʼChate.ʼ

Although the essence was because ʼChateʼ wasnʼt truly a living being, so its ”abilities” were still considered ”rules” by the game...
But regarding ʼRule Typeʼ abilities, Lin Yu had gained an understanding.

Not necessarily easy to use, but definitely usable in all sorts of situations.

Just like now, Lin Yu could guess that someone had activated a ʼRule Typeʼ ability.

”After all, this rule appeared too suddenly. Itʼs hard to imagine it wasnʼt caused by a ʼPlayerʼsʼ ability.”

Stiller was illuminating the path ahead, while Lin Yu followed behind with Hannah and Old Zheng, staying alert while analyzing the ”rule” that had just appeared.

After the rule was recited, the thorny iron wall rose again.

After hearing Lin Yuʼs analysis, Old Zheng offered his own opinion.

”It doesnʼt seem like an ʼOfficial.ʼ If I were an ʼOfficialʼ... I would directly modify the range so that only I could enter that healing area.”

”Although an ordinary ʼOfficialʼ couldnʼt do it, anyone who can enter this [dungeon] must have completed at least one ʼPromotion,ʼ most likely reaching ʼSecond Tierʼ... Their abilities would definitely be enhanced, so achieving that shouldnʼt be difficult.”

Lin Yu lifted Old Zhengʼs brain jar. ”How do you know such specifics? Donʼt tell me your former class was ʼOfficialʼ?”

”My former class was ʼScholar,ʼ okay? Iʼm pure, not some vulgar person filled with self-perceptions of power and status,” Old Zhengʼs brain circuitry flashed dismissively. ”The admission standards for the Professional Committee of the ʼPsychological Societyʼ were set by me!”

”As for why Iʼm so familiar with ʼOfficials,ʼ itʼs simply because I was disgusted by one before... Seriously, if you could help me get back at that guy, I could make a deal with you, give you some benefits!”

Lin Yu wasnʼt in a hurry to agree. ”Tell me who it is first. I always feel thereʼs a catch.”

Old Zheng was silent for a second and a half before speaking. ”So cautious... Itʼs someone from ʼOrder.ʼ”

”He was already the South China Inspector back then, codename ʼRengu.ʼ Heʼs probably been promoted to Regional Director by now?”

Lin Yu let out a breath. ”Great, not only a tough character, but also from ʼOrder.ʼ”

”But think on the bright side. Itʼs been so long. Maybe he died in some dungeon, just like you.”

”Nope, because when you went to Haicheng, I sensed it. His ʼPermanent Ruleʼ still exists, which means heʼs still alive,” Old Zheng sighed. ”You can check the ʼHuntersʼ Associationʼ to know. He has the third-highest bounty posted by ʼOrder,ʼ only behind the ʼGeneralʼ and the ʼSecretary,ʼ even higher than the ʼGrandmaster.ʼ”

Lin Yu was surprised. ”So what did he do?”

”ʼAny members of the ʼPsychological Societyʼ or ʼMaraudersʼ are prohibited from entering Player offline trading gatherings,ʼ” Old Zheng said resentfully. ”If you have time, join the ʼMaraudersʼ and try entering an offline gathering yourself. Once inside, youʼll find yourself breathless, struggling to breathe, and detectable by the current cityʼs Game Master.”

Old Zheng didnʼt know yet that Lin Yu already had an identity in this regard, as Lin Yu hadnʼt had time to switch accounts this time, being too busy with the ʼMay Mayʼ matter.

But hearing Old Zhengʼs words, Lin Yu felt a surge of respect for the unseen ʼRengu.ʼ

”What a good person! The only mistake was not kicking out the ʼFree Allianceʼ as well!”

No wonder the safety of his offline gatherings was so high. It turned out someone was carrying the burden and providing protection, kicking out the two biggest troublemakers among the Player community.

Although he didnʼt know what this ʼOfficialʼ was like in reality, Lin Yu guessed he was probably a clean, good official who cared about the people in his work!

”Anyway, if itʼs not an ʼOfficial,ʼ which ʼRule Typeʼ do you think is more likely?”

Lin Yu asked, and Old Zheng pondered.

”Honestly... judging by the content, Iʼm actually leaning more toward your colleague.”

Lin Yu was surprised. ”ʼActorʼ? Or an advanced ʼStudentʼ?”

”Your self-positioning and perception arenʼt very clear, young man,” Old Zheng said calmly. ”If itʼs not a ʼUnique Class,ʼ Iʼm more inclined to think itʼs a ʼFraudster.ʼ”

”Activating the ability right from the start, and the content doesnʼt seem self-customized. It really fits the ʼFraudsterʼ style.”

Hearing this, Lin Yu was somewhat taken aback.

During ʼFirst-Tier,ʼ the ʼPromotion Trialʼ task was to find a ʼFraudster,ʼ but there was no ʼFraudsterʼ in that [dungeon]...

Now at ʼSecond-Tier,ʼ the task doesnʼt involve a ʼFraudster,ʼ but he actually encounters one in the game.

Thereʼs a strange sense of coincidence.

”A ʼFraudster,ʼ huh... Thatʼs actually a bit interesting.”

Since the class is ʼFraudster,ʼ it means the other party must have studied deception and trickery methods.

Given that a ʼThird-Tierʼ ʼDetectiveʼ has specifically come looking for him, now another relatively troublesome, hard-to-deceive Player has appeared.

”Truly challenging. The ʼPromotion Trialʼ really lives up to its name... Even disregarding the task, this Player configuration feels like a ʼtrialʼ specially prepared for me by the ʼDeath Game.ʼ”

Lin Yu sighed, finally summarizing his thoughts. ”Even this kind of game has an ELO mechanism that matches you against perverted opponents after a winning streak. Really makes you want to curse their entire family.”

Stiller, who was scouting ahead, couldnʼt help but look back.

”I thought Director was excited about the challenge, but it turns out itʼs a complaint.”

Old Zheng also chuckled dryly. ”I donʼt think this game has ELO. Youʼre just purely unlucky!”

Lin Yu sighed. ”Yeah, thatʼs exactly why Iʼm annoyed!”

While Lin Yu and his summons were chatting and exploring.

In the distance, a clearly visible light source that had been maintaining roughly a hundred-meter distance from them suddenly went out!

Lin Yu instantly stopped the casual talk and joking.

”Stiller, lights out.”

”Someone is charging toward us.”
