Chapter 50: The Monty Hall Problem! Saving Unforgotten!

After Crow-Man finished speaking, Lin Yu showed a slight reaction.

This ”hint” combined with the roomʼs layout and the information he obtained from the first question...

All these immediately made Lin Yu think of a classic ”probability theory problem”.

Just as expected.

Crow-Man spoke again.

”Caw caw, congratulations on reaching the first roomʼs ʼdecisionʼ problem.”

”Caw caw, as you can see, this room has doors of different colors—only one leads to the next room.”

”Caw caw, the other doors...as you already know, lead to the ʼendlessʼ void—falling in means certain death!”

”Caw, all of you must still agree on one answer and choose the same door before Iʼll lead you through!”

”So now...make your ʼdecisionʼ and tell me which colored door you want to choose!”
As Crow-Man spoke, Lin Yu instantly understood.

Unforgotten spoke simultaneously: ”This is the Monty Hall paradox...also called the Three Doors Problem!”

Hearing Unforgottenʼs quiet words, Lin Yu looked at her in surprise.

”You actually know this?”

Unforgotten looked at Lin Yu with slight displeasure: ”Itʼs not some advanced or cutting-edge theory...isnʼt it normal that I know it?”

”Though stealing your bike was wrong, you shouldnʼt question my knowledge!”

Lin Yu was momentarily speechless.

He had indeed subconsciously underestimated Unforgottenʼs education—after all, the girlʼs profession was ʼThiefʼ.

Since everyoneʼs awakened profession was usually related to their life, and Lin Yu had also encountered a ʼThiefʼ in the first dungeon.

So Lin Yu had almost instinctively assumed this girl was a professional thief like Yao Zhengye!

And a teenage professional thief probably never attended school.

Knowing elementary math was one thing...

But the ”Three Doors Problem” was probability theory content—though basic—

Its popularity wasnʼt that widespread.

Lin Yu looked at April, Number Eight, and Iron Uncle.

The two college students and the white-helmeted construction supervisor clearly hadnʼt heard of this theory.

They all looked blankly at Lin Yu and Unforgotten.

”Whatʼs the ʼThree Doors Problemʼ?”

Unforgotten glared at Lin Yu: ”Then Nine Waters, you explain it!”

With the water level rising, Lin Yu wasnʼt in the mood to argue with Unforgotten, so he briefly explained the problem.

”This problem originated from a TV game show, exactly matching our situation.”

”Simply put, a person must choose one of three doors. Only one has a prize—the correct door—while the other two are wrong.”

”After choosing, the host opens another wrong door, then asks if they want to switch—the debate is whether switching increases the probability of choosing correctly.”

Due to time pressure, Lin Yu didnʼt let them think freely.

”Iʼll give the conclusion directly—the answer is yes. Not switching gives a one-third chance, but switching raises it to two-thirds!”

This counterintuitive conclusion immediately drew skepticism from Iron Uncle, April, and Number Eight.

”You mean we first choose a door, then after Crow-Man opens one, we immediately switch?”

Iron Uncle asked incredulously.

”Right,” Unforgotten said urgently, ”This is a probability theory problem, mathematically proven long ago. We can explain why in the next safe room!”

”For now...just do it this way!”

With the water now completely above Unforgottenʼs head, she kept treading water, her tone anxious.

”Fine, Iʼll trust you this once,” Iron Uncle gritted his teeth, ”We randomly pick one now, right? Letʼs choose red!”

”Okay, red it is!”

April and Number Eight quickly agreed.

After all five chose red, Crow-Man laughed.

”Caw caw, first choice is red...good, now Iʼll give the ʼhintʼ!”

Then Crow-Man flapped its wings, opening the yellow door opposite the red one.

”Splash—”

Beyond the yellow door was pitch-black void, water gushing out violently, pushing everyone toward it.

Though relieved the water level was dropping, they soon realized...

The currentʼs speed was dangerous too!

”This reward sucks!”

Number Eight cursed, grabbing April to prevent her being swept away.

Iron Uncle paddled against the current, squatting to stabilize himself.

Unforgotten, already unable to touch bottom, completely lost balance.

”Help!”

She flailed desperately, nearly swept out.

When she was less than half a meter from the yellow door...

Lin Yu, steady as a rock in the current, sighed and used his ʼSoldierʼ fivefold physical ability to stride over, grabbing Unforgottenʼs windbreaker collar to drag her back to the center.

Still shaken, Unforgotten looked at Lin Yu: ”Thanks...thanks, Nine Waters.”

”Youʼre truly magnanimous—even though you kept threatening me with your gun earlier, in the end you still saved my sorry ass...”

She panted heavily.

Lin Yu flicked her forehead: ”I just think your crimes donʼt deserve death!”

Though stealing his bike was despicable, Lin Yu didnʼt think she deserved to die.

After joining the ʼDeath Gameʼ, Lin Yuʼs mindset had changed: when necessary, he could absolutely kill.

But that didnʼt mean heʼd become a cold psychopath whoʼd ignore people in danger or kill indiscriminately.

While he and Unforgotten had conflicts, it wasnʼt to the point of killing her.

Moreover...

Lin Yu was beginning to suspect that despite being a ʼThiefʼ, Unforgotten might be the most useful teammate in this ”Deadly Quiz” game!

After all, she seemed quite intelligent.

As the yellow door stayed open and drainage outpaced inflow, the water level soon receded below everyoneʼs waist.

The current weakened too; Lin Yu released Unforgottenʼs collar, but the girl still clung to his arm, visibly shaken.

”The water wonʼt sweep you away now!”

Lin Yu said helplessly.

”No way! That couple over there is still holding on!”

Unforgotten pointed at Number Eight still embracing April.

Lin Yu sighed: ”Theyʼre a couple...we just met.”

”I could pair up with you too,” Unforgotten shamelessly said, ”Nine Waters bro, I like you!”

”Cut the crap.”

Lin Yu said resignedly, but didnʼt force her to let go.

Their exchange reached the other three.

April nudged Number Eight, who awkwardly released her.

”The currentʼs fine now.”

Iron Uncle, squatting alone, suddenly mused.

”Youth is wonderful...but though the waterʼs receding, we should switch doors fast!”

”Now the only remaining door is the blue one, right?”
