Is It Weird for a Guy to Apply to a Witch School?

Chapter 163: Direction of Modding Runes Within a Spellbook

Morning.

“Ugh… it’s already this time…”

I woke up and checked the time.

It seemed my biological clock didn’t wake me up as usual.

I got up a little later than usual.

It seems that yesterday’s events consumed too many of my brain cells.

After a simple wash-up, I put on new clothes.

Right, I need to prepare a few more sets of spare clothes, otherwise, I’ll have nowhere to change if my clothes get damaged.

After arriving at the arena, I also found a place to sit down.

Before today’s matches began, I still had some things to do.

For example, to study my Wind Blade Spell a little.

I didn’t expect to be able to use the Wind Blade Spell as terrifyingly as the Fireball in such a short time, but at the very least, I should mod it into a form that’s convenient to use.

The wind element is inherently lively.

It can’t be like a Fireball, a mass in a fixed place.

A wind blade also doesn’t have a fixed shape.

So when I modded the Wind Blade Spell so that it wouldn’t launch immediately, it turned into a Wind Blade Spell that could only spin in place, and then the Wind Blade Spell really became a self-rotating ball of wind.

It seems this constantly moving state is quite interesting…

“Huh? What spell is this? It’s so magical, a wind vortex?”

“Hmm? Oh, it’s just a Wind Blade Spell.”

I looked up at the person who had arrived.

It was Erica, the class president of Class 13.

According to the seating order, she was right next to me.

I didn’t expect so many people to have arrived this early.

It would be a bit impolite to play with spells here then.

It’s like playing with grenades in a public place, is that good?

It’s not good.

“Wind Blade Spell? Huh? A Wind Blade Spell doesn’t look like this, right?”

“There are so many Wind Blade Spellbooks in the world, there are bound to be a few that look like this, don’t worry.”

I comforted her.

This class president from the class next to mine was really curious.

But looking at her, she should have advanced.

I didn’t see her yesterday afternoon.

I hope I don’t run into her today.

“What kind of twisted logic is that, hey!”

However, at this moment, I didn’t have much mind to estimate the other party’s feelings.

Because at this moment, I was stuck in a somewhat difficult dilemma.

That is, I hadn’t paid too much attention before, but now I noticed that the use of runes within the Spellbook was a bit too advanced, so advanced that I didn’t even know what they were for.

Take the Fireball I’m most familiar with as an example.

I had figured out the entire Spellbook, from its internal structure, how it guides magic power into the Spellbook, converts it into the corresponding element, to how the ritual and structure combine to form a fireball.

Every part and every place was quite perfect.

It seemed that there wasn’t much participation of Rune Rituals in it.

The most important part was the “Formation Ritual,” so what kind of structure do these densely packed runes serve within the Spellbook?

It seems to be everywhere, but the operation of every part seems to be able to do without it.

Including the Wind Blade Spell, it seems to be the same.

The runes that can be clearly seen in the spell ritual are actually composite runes, but these runes only account for a very small part of the total runes.

More runes even require me to use Spirit Vision to see them on “another level.”

They operate like precise gears, interlocking with each other, stacked layer upon layer.

I can’t understand them, yet I can feel their complex beauty.

I can’t even understand what these are made of.

Normal runes are actually very simple.

Mental power and transcendent energy can form a rune.

If the formation is successful, the rune will take effect directly.

If the formation fails, the rune will shatter, the transcendent energy will dissipate, and the mental power will suffer a slight backlash.

But what are the runes inside the Spellbook made of?

Energy?

Mental power?

Where does the mental power come from?

Where does the energy come from?

Whose mental power?

What energy?

I don’t know any of this.

I only have a vague feeling that this is what constitutes the entire Spellbook.

I had been deliberately avoiding a question before, which is what Spellbooks are actually made of.

Is it energy?

No, it just has an outer protective shell of energy.

What about the inside?

Are they these runes?

So the complex information feedback from the Spellbook that I initially saw with Spirit Vision were runes?

Now that I have a further understanding of runes, the information feedback from Spirit Vision doesn’t bring me too much of a shock anymore, it’s just that the densely packed view gives me a headache.

So what causes me shock is, in the end, the unknown.

Then how much of the unknown have I ignored?

A Floating World-level Spirit Vision definitely can’t just be capable of this much.

From childhood until now, I have been forcing myself to ignore those unknowns, to the point that I no longer know how much I have ignored.

Looking at it now, I was essentially giving up the function brought by Spirit Vision, because at that time, I couldn’t afford this ability.

The best way was to let it go.

It’s not so easy to pick up something I spent so many years letting go of.

Unless I break through my own subconscious and can control it freely.

The two previous accidents with Tan Han have increased my control over Spirit Vision a lot, which allows me to try and test my own limits.

In the end, my Spirit Vision is essentially at the “Floating World” level, but the extent to which I can use it now probably doesn’t reach the true Floating World level.

Perhaps it’s below the “Madness Threshold”?

But I can do things that even teachers who are Transcendent Witches can’t.

In short, this matter is a bit complicated.

It’s better to let nature take its course.

“Hey Little Han, it’s time to get ready, you know?”

“Ah? Oh.”

Suddenly, I was tapped by Erica, and then I snapped back to reality.

I was a bit absorbed in studying the Wind Blade Spell and rune structures.

I looked at my phone, a lot of time had passed, but it felt like I hadn’t done anything.

Looking up at the arena, it was already bustling with noise and packed with people.

The huge arena below was once again divided into many fields.

The light screen above was constantly broadcasting the exciting live footage from below, while some light screens were displaying the battle groups for the next batch.

“The allocation is already complete?”

“Yeah, I saw you were spacing out just now. What on earth were you doing?”

Erica asked puzzledly, “If I hadn’t seen your eyes were open, I would have thought you were in a deep meditative state. Do you meditate with your eyes open? Is this how geniuses train!”

“How is that possible! I was just thinking about some things. By the way, which arena am I in and who am I fighting against?”

I asked curiously.

“I didn’t pay much attention, look for yourself. Isn’t it on the light screen? It seems you’re in the next batch. Look, the others have already stood up to go and prepare.”

“Oh, thanks for the reminder.”

I hurriedly stood up and walked towards the preparation area.

As I passed, my gaze also saw the duel schedule above.

I was in Arena 12, and my opponent was number 223, named Chen Yu.

From the picture, she seemed to be a tall, lively girl.

I wonder how her combat ability is.

But no matter what, I’ll use her to test my Wind Blade Spell.

I naturally won’t touch those runes whose functions I don’t know, but I can try the runes in the ritual.

The worst that can happen is that I damage a Spellbook.

At this stage, the one thing I don’t lack is Spellbooks.

However, I would still feel the heartache if one was really scrapped.

You have to know that even a small Spellbook without a ritual is quite expensive.

Selling it would be enough to keep me from worrying about money for a long time.

“Hello I’m Chen Yu from class 223. Um, please be gentle with me later.”

After getting into the arena, Chen Yu was the first to greet me with a very sincere attitude.

Even though she knew my strength, she didn’t surrender directly.

Instead, she was here asking me to be a little gentler.

That’s right, after all, in this kind of competition, if you surrender without a fight, you’d probably be looked down upon, right?

“Mhm, you do your best too.”

I smiled and tried to make my expression as gentle as possible, but this was the arena, after all.

When it was time to be serious, I would not be vague.

“Are both sides ready?”

The referee asked from between the two of us.

“Ready!”

“Yes, ready.”

I nodded along.

“Then, let the match begin!”

After the referee’s announcement, Chen Yu charged towards me in a single leap.

I could very clearly see the ritual of the other party’s Spellbook light up.

If there were no surprises, it should be a transformation spell.

As expected, when facing a regular contestant, my mentality was completely different.

I didn’t even feel much nervousness and could directly analyze the other party’s various situations.

And I could use this to respond directly, first by simply putting an energy shield on myself, and then starting with a Wind Blade Spell to interfere with the opponent.

This was the advantage created by casting speed.

It seemed the opponent was dodging in a rather sorry state.

She probably didn’t have any alchemical items as support, and I could also see what her transformation spell was.

It should also be a cat-type transformation.

Her level of bestial transformation at this moment was even more severe than my cat-person transformation, and after transforming, her body was surrounded by flames.

It should be something like a flame cat.

The opponent’s transformation had directly departed from human aesthetics, just short of walking on all fours.

But what this exchanged for was terrifying explosive power and the ability to control flames.

The opponent accelerated in an instant and rushed right in front of me.

I didn’t deliberately keep a distance from the opponent, so the first moment of engagement was already close-quarters combat.

There are so many people who use transformation spells, and I don’t know any martial arts.

This was the last complaint in my heart.

The opponent’s hands had already turned into fleshy pads with sharp claws extended, coming straight for my face, but this blow clearly hit the energy shield.

The sharp claws, enhanced with flames, directly left cracks on my energy shield, but all the flames were blocked.

But it was obvious she had more than just this one attack.

After this one was blocked, it was as if a combo was triggered, and she switched to attacking from other directions.

But it was obvious I wouldn’t give her such an opportunity.

After continuously stacking a few more layers of shields, I also found an opportunity.

“Here?”

The slender wand held in my right hand extended out.

From the tip of the wand, a wind blade shot out.

The speed of the wind blade was even more terrifying than a Fireball, especially when released at such a close range.

Unfortunately, the Wind Blade Spell doesn’t explode or anything.

This blow directly hits the opponent’s transformation spell ritual, but most transformation spells are mainly about being tough-skinned.

A single ordinary Wind Blade Spell couldn’t directly break the opponent’s spell.

But at the moment of impact, the effect bestowed by the spell would also cause the opponent to lose part of the spell’s effect as if the power was cut off.

Without the powerful enhancement of the transformation spell, she was instead sent flying by the Wind Blade Spell.

And at such a close range, the Wind Blade Spell suffered no attrition and was fully taken by her.

The damage wasn’t high, but the full force was absorbed.

The figure of Chen Yu, who was sent flying backward, was in a bit of a sorry state.

The transformation spell was somewhat unstable, and the signs of bestial transformation on her body were receding.

But she knew very well that if the transformation spell was dispelled and broken in this way, she would definitely suffer from a mental power backlash.

How would she have a chance to counterattack then?

So even in this situation, she quickly flipped over and adjusted her body posture, at least not facing her opponent by falling down.

The effect bestowed by the transformation spell made her subconsciously land on all fours to stabilize her body, but at this moment she found that the bestial transformation of her right hand had already faded, returning to her original hand.

But soon her eyes met mine, yet her heart was filled with complicated feelings.

Is this the person who can stand on equal footing with that freak Tan Han?

Just one hit put her in such an embarrassing situation, and the opponent definitely went easy on her!

She didn’t even use that terrifying Fireball, and the opponent didn’t finish her off now either.

Thinking about it, that Tan Han has a transformation spell, and she does too, but both were broken by the opponent in one hit.

This isn’t some Explosive Witch, this is a Transformation Spell Nemesis!

Regardless of what Chen Yu was thinking at this moment, I just purely wanted to test the Wind Blade Spell.

Eliminating the opponent so quickly was useless.

If I didn’t learn or gain anything from a battle, then that battle was a failure.

What have I learned now?

Nothing, I haven’t even used my modded Wind Blade Spell.

“Make your move! I don’t need you to go easy on me!”

“Wait, I’m experimenting on something.”

I ignored the opponent’s request for a “quick death.”

Sorry, but please don’t die before I’ve gathered enough information.

Let’s try this.

The runes in the magic power conversion part, what if I change them to the style of the Fireball’s runes?

“Experimenting on something?”

Chen Yu quickly adjusted her state.

She didn’t know what the opponent was experimenting on.

Originally, she had thought of being gloriously defeated and exiting the stage, but it was obvious the opponent wouldn’t give her this chance.

Then she couldn’t just wait there to be eliminated.

She would be laughed at.

Dispelling the transformation spell now could alleviate the damage from the mental power backlash, but the transformation spell would enter a period of “cooldown.”

After all, the Spellbook also needed a break.

There was still a lot of residual energy inside.

If the residue from the last use wasn’t completely dissipated, there was a high probability of failure when using the spell again, and failure would result in a mental power backlash.

But besides the transformation spell, she only knew some fire-type spells.

These spells were all meant to complement her Explosion Flame Cat transformation spell…

Maybe she should just surrender?

“This should be okay, right…”

Obviously, after changing a few runes at this moment, this Spellbook was complete.

I don’t know what the final effect will be.

Will the Wind Blade Spell become a Fire Blade Spell?

After all, what I modified were some of the runes for energy conversion, and I referred to the runes of the Fireball.

I hope it doesn’t explode.

Wind element and fire element shouldn’t explode like ice elements, right?

Probably…

In any case, the Spellbook began to draw magic power and start the conversion.

Soon a wind blade appeared, but it didn’t seem to be the fire blade I was hoping for.

The wind blade just swirled around my hand, staying on my hand like a wind vortex.

But the more I observed, the more I felt something was wrong.

This wind was abnormally hot.

The wind element seemed to have suppressed the fire element.

The fire element did exist, but it wasn’t externally manifested as flames.

However, this constantly rising temperature was still telling me that the fire element was indeed inside.

Doesn’t this mean that this is a spell combining two elements?

I looked at the modded Spellbook and quickly found the problem.

The consumption issue after such a mod was too great, and the magic power conversion rate was extremely low!

This meant that a momentary whim was still not perfect and required further research, but this also gave me a whole new direction for experimentation.

Fortunately, the runes I touched weren’t those underlying runes inside the Spellbook, otherwise, I would have really been afraid of breaking the Spellbook.

“My patience has its limits! What do you mean by ignoring me like this!”

“Sorry, I forgot to deal with you. Come and try this.”

I watched the opponent’s figure charge over again.

At this moment, her transformation spell had been dispelled, but the spell in her hand was obviously a melee spell meant to be used with the transformation.

Little sister, aren’t you going to learn some ranged spells?

The wind vortex in my hand was thrown out by me.

The wind blade that shot out turned into a half-moon arc at this moment.

The extremely high temperature distorted the air it passed through.

The tail of the wind blade now had a transparent flame, crashing towards Chen Yu’s Flame Meow Claw with high temperature.

Anyway, I don’t know the name of that spell, but it should be called something like that based on its appearance.

“Wind blade again?”

The speed of the wind blade was extremely fast.

Chen Yu had no way to avoid it, especially since this was her last charge, and she didn’t expect the opponent to launch a sneak attack like this.

Having the upper hand and still having no martial ethics!

But if it was a wind blade.

She felt she should be able to catch it.

After all, a wind blade wouldn’t explode like a Fireball.

It was just extreme speed and the sharp cutting power of the wind element.

She still understood this much common sense.

But when she raised her flaming sharp claw to block the wind blade, the sharpness of the wind blade was beyond her expectations, and she even felt a bit irritable, like flames.

A scorching wind carrying high-temperature flames blew towards her body.

This was definitely not the flame from her own spell!

The Flame Meow Claw spell, in order not to burn the caster, just looked intimidating.

All the fire element was condensed into sharp claws to enhance cutting ability.

At this moment, she felt like the clothes on her body were about to catch fire, and the long hair on her forehead became curled and deformed due to the high temperature.

“It’s… it’s on fire!”

At this time, the live commentary of Arena 12 was also in an uproar.

The commentator didn’t know how to comment anymore.

“Contestant number 223 from Arena 12 used a fire-type spell and was set on fire by contestant number 14’s wind-type spell. This can be called another iconic scene…”

“Very good, contestant number 223 has chosen to surrender. The referee also quickly went forward to check on contestant number 223’s condition. Then let us congratulate contestant number 14 on achieving the final victory.”
