Chapter 35: Chapter - 35: Safe Return

”...Someone attacked us? Let’s fight them.” Elena asked me like it’s the most normal thing to do in such a situation.

”Not right now, it’s not safe here” I said while continuing to observe the distant rooftop.

The hooded attacker clearly hadn’t expected his surprise attack to be blocked so effortlessly.

For only a brief moment, our eyes seemed to meet across the city and then....

He immediately turned around and fled without the slightest hesitation.

”As expected, he isn’t planning a second attack.”

Of course I know no one would dare to engage in an all out fight against a noble inside the capital unless they have the higher status.

Without wasting another second, I opened my storage bracelet and a slender blue arrow immediately appeared in my hand. ’Will Arrow’, the magical tool that I bought before.

The blue arrow floated into the air before accelerating forward like a streak of lightning, automatically locking onto the fleeing attacker’s remaining mana signature.

I watched silently as the arrow disappeared beyond the rooftops but....nothing happened.

”Whoosh”

The ’Will Arrow’ quietly returned from a different direction after making an arc around the empty alley. I caught it before placing it back inside my storage bracelet.

”...It failed?” Ian asked.

”He escaped outside my range.” I answered honestly. ”Or he prepared some method to erase his mana trail. Either way, we lost him.”

Outside the carriage, Dalas slowly lowered the Deepsea Shield.

His expression remained perfectly calm, but the seriousness in his eyes had deepened considerably.

”I cannot pursue him.” He spoke after carefully observing the surrounding buildings.

”If this was a planned ambush, there may be additional attackers waiting for us elsewhere.”

I completely agreed. If Dalas left right now and another hidden attacker appeared, we will lack our strongest defense.

The captain of the city guards finally arrived together with several armored soldiers after hearing the explosion.

After briefly explaining that an unidentified mage had launched a long-range attack before escaping, Dalas left the remaining investigation to the city authorities.

The road was quickly cleared afterward and soon the horses began moving again, but nobody inside the carriage spoke for quite some time.

The lively mood from when we were coming to the battle arena had completely disappeared.

Elena remained beside me, her expression unusually solemn.

”...Kai.”

She softly called my name.

”Hm?”

”Just now, you used that Will Arrow which means that your mental strength is already at the final stage of the spirit river, right?”

*So she noticed*

”Yes, it has already reached the final stage when I bought the magic tool that day”

There’s no need to hide it from anyone here and honestly I don’t think it is even that big of a deal. But other’s reaction tell otherwise.

”You are at the final stage?! You didn’t even tell me about it” Ian suddenly said in an exaggerated manner.

”It’s really amazing, I have never heard anyone so young having such a high level of mental strength” Lily also added.

[Note:- Mental Strength doesn’t necessarily equal one’s intelligence]

”You have already taken a step towards the next level. I will need to work harder to catch up” Elena said like this is some sort of competition.

But the atmosphere in the carriage became lighter because of it so I can’t say it’s a bad thing.

After that we didn’t dwell much in the capital streets as we went directly to drop Lily to her house and then headed back to the academy.

Considering everything that had happened today; the battle arena incident, the appearance of an evil magic user, and now a planned ambush, even bustling city streets no longer felt truly safe.

....

After getting back to the academy we finally bid bye to Dalas and Maya. Dalas will first escort Maya to the Mizo family’s villa and then will return to our villa.

Right now three of us are on our way to the student dormitories.

”Elena, I have something to talk about with you.”

I stopped Elena as she was just about to head to the female dormitory.

Ian also stopped for a second in his track to the male dormitory but only for a second. He leaves while whistling.

*Why do I think that he is misunderstanding something?*

”Huh?....Yes, say anything you want, I am completely ready.”

Elena said with an eager look in her eyes like she was waiting for me to tell her something.

*Is she also misunderstanding something*

”Ugh..actually, it was about today’s incident. I heard from my mother that another evil magic user was apprehended on the day we went to the marketplace as well”

”So, I wanted to tell you to be careful. This city doesn’t seem safe and I think there can be more evil magic users lurking around in the city.”

And it will be a big problem if she comes into their contact. With her strong dark attribute and immense potential, they may try to target her.

”Is that all?” Elena asked me with a disappointed look.

”Umm... Don’t you think there are other things to talk about with your fiancee than just that”

”Other things?”

I don’t understand what she is trying to say. Did she want to discuss something else?

”Nothing! If you don’t have anything else to say then I am going.”

Elena said as she turned around and walked a little further. Then she just stopped for a moment and said something in a low voice and walked away.

Why did she suddenly got angry?

And I think she said something like ”you are den” or something like that.

I thought about what I did to make her angry while getting back to my dorm room and a weird thought came to my mind.

*Was Elena just now expecting a confession?*

*Nah maybe I am just thinking too much.....or maybe she actually likes me?*

”Huh? you are already back?” Ian asked as soon as I entered the room.

”Ian, do you think that Elena.....that she likes me?”

I hesitated but ended up asking for his opinion. But what I received in return was not an answer but a weird look.

How to explain it, it was the look that seems to be saying ’are you for real?’.
