The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

In the cramped interrogation room, Jiang An and Wan sat on either side of the interrogation table, their expressions serious as they stared intently at the criminal suspect, Chen Guan.

As the chief interrogator, Jiang An said in a deep voice, ”Describe in detail the entire process of committing these five crimes.”

”Also, why did you throw the items related to the first and fifth cases into the dry well?”

Upon hearing this, Chen Guan’s mouth twitched involuntarily, as if he was wrestling with intense inner conflict.

After two minutes of silence, he finally spoke slowly, his voice somewhat hoarse: ”First, I want to answer your second question.”

”The main reason for throwing them into the dry well is that when I have nothing to do, I ride a tricycle to the demolition areas on the outskirts of the city to collect some scrap.”

”You know, there are lots of abandoned things in those places, and occasionally, you can find something valuable.”

He licked his somewhat chapped lips and continued, ”When committing the first crime, I noticed that there was a dry well near one of the demolition houses, in a very hidden location, surrounded by weeds, so people generally wouldn’t notice it.”

”A thought suddenly flashed through my mind—that place is suitable for hiding things because it won’t be easily discovered.”

”Later, during the process of collecting scrap, I found another similar dry well and made a point of throwing the relevant items in there.”

As soon as he finished speaking, Jiang An pursued the question: ”So, you weren’t familiar with the locations of these two dry wells?”

”Were they discovered by chance?”

Chen Guan nodded, his expression somewhat numb: ”Indeed, I wasn’t familiar with them.”

”At first, I only knew there was a dry well in that place, and I found the specific location on the spot without prior planning.”

Then, under Jiang An’s interrogation, Chen Guan began to confess the process of committing each crime one by one.

The processes of all the crimes were quite similar.

He used his identity as a ”boss’s husband” as a guise, luring the victims into the car by phone or face-to-face interaction, and then committing the crime within the confined space.

Sometimes he strangled them with a rope, other times he did it by hand, until the victim completely lost vital signs.

After a long pause, Jiang An asked in a deep voice: ”After committing so many crimes, with so much blood on your hands, have you ever felt a moment of regret in your heart?”

”Regret? Hahaha...”

Chen Guan let out a bitter laugh, which echoed in the small interrogation room with a touch of desolation.

”What’s there to regret? My whole life has been so pathetic, living worse than a dog.”

”Back then, for that meager salary, I worked overtime every day, unable even to defend my wife from being bullied.”

”Tell me, how can any man not feel bitter about such things?”

He paused, his eyes gradually darkening: ”However, each time I ’handled’ a ’target,’ I gained a momentary balance in my heart.”

”Seeing those once arrogant people fall before me allowed me to get a few peaceful nights of sleep.”

”So, even though I’ve been hiding and dodging these past few years, I’m actually feeling more at ease than I did before. Although it’s tiring, my heart feels relieved!”

Guan Yuhang looked at him with a solemn expression, eyebrows furrowed: ”Your so-called ’balance’ is built on the suffering of others, paid for with the blood of the innocent for a moment’s peace.”

”You must understand that every person’s life is unique, bearing the hopes of a family.”

”Your actions have not only trampled on the dignity of the law but have also desecrated the value of life.”

”The net of justice is vast, and eventually, you will be punished by the law.”

”Punishment, so be it.” Chen Guan slumped against the back of the chair, his eyes hollow.

”After all, I’m already buried in debt; living each day is no different from being a walking corpse.”

”Instead of dragging on like this, it’s better to...”

Forty minutes later, Jiang An and Wan simultaneously pushed open the heavy iron door of the interrogation room.

Outside, their task force colleagues had been waiting for a long time, with Zhang Yean eagerly rushing to meet them.

As the two stepped out of the interrogation room, the hallway erupted into a round of enthusiastic applause.

This applause was both a celebration of the successful resolution of the case and a salute to the officers who had fought tirelessly on the front lines, day and night.

Witnessing this scene, Jiang An felt a surge of complex emotions, a mix of relief after solving the case and deep contemplation about the case itself.

He raised a hand to signal for silence, his voice steady and powerful: ”The successful resolution of this case could not have been achieved without the hard work of every comrade present.”

”From the time the case broke until now, we have endured many sleepless nights and overcome numerous difficulties, ultimately bringing the suspect to justice.”

”This is a testament to the professional capability and sense of responsibility of our criminal investigation team.”

Then, he glanced around at each colleague present, his tone gradually softening: ”It has been tough on everyone lately. Especially the task force members, feel free to adjust your pace accordingly and take leave if needed.”

”But remember, our work isn’t finished yet. The collection of evidence, transfer for prosecution, and other tasks still require continuous effort from everyone.”

Hearing this, the office immediately burst into a wave of enthusiastic cheers. Some excitedly pounded the table, others jubilantly high-fived each other, as the oppressive atmosphere of recent days was instantly swept away by this surge of energy.

Perhaps for ordinary people, monetary rewards might be more appealing, but to these detectives who deal with crime year after year, having a complete holiday is more precious than any material reward.
