The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

minutes later, Chen Guan was brought into the interrogation room of the criminal investigation unit by two police officers, one on each side, still wearing those gray-blue striped pajamas.

From the moment he was taken out of his home, the police didn’t give him the chance to return to his bedroom to change his clothes.

”Officers, what exactly is this supposed to mean?”

”What crime have I committed for you to drag me out of my house like this?”

”What crime? Don’t you have any idea yourself?”

Wan, sitting across from him, spoke up.

”I really don’t know!”

”I just said, Jinsheng Foot Massage Shop is run by my wife; it has absolutely nothing to do with me.”

”If you want to investigate, you should be asking her!”

”No involvement? What about other matters?”

”Are other matters also unrelated to you?”

”Other matters... other matters...”

Chen Guan rubbed his fingers, as if suddenly remembering something.

”Oh right, I sometimes play small card games, and I lose a lot sometimes, owing some gambling debts...”

”Officers, if you really want to arrest someone, you should arrest those loan sharks instead!”

”Round them all up, and I won’t have to pay back the money! I’m begging you, please, catch them all!”

”Bang—!”

Wan slammed the table hard, causing the notes on the table to jump a little.

”Chen Guan! Don’t go rambling here!”

”You know full well that’s not what we’re here to listen to!”

He shouted sternly, then signaled to his colleague next to him, ”Bring the computer over.”

On the screen appeared several ID photos of women, each one attached with a name.

”First is Li Qian; second, Liu Yun; third, Zhang Jing... Do you know these people?”

Chen Guan squinted at the screen, shook his head, ”Don’t know them, really don’t know.”

”Don’t know them?”

Wan sneered, ”They are all employees at your wife’s foot massage shop, and you say you don’t know them?”

”Oh... employees,”

Chen Guan dragged out his tone, like he realized something suddenly, ”Then I might have seen them, but I’m not familiar. My wife might know them.”

”These five people have been murdered one after another, and you don’t know anything?”

”I really don’t know!”

Chen Guan spread his hands, looking innocent, ”I just heard my wife mention that occasionally someone leaves without saying a word.”

”You know this line of work, people come and go; here today, gone tomorrow, and nobody talks much.”

”With their kind of status, it’s never honorable anywhere, who wants to associate themselves with that?”

”What about you then?”

”As a husband, you have no opinion about your wife working in such a place?”

An older officer suddenly interjected, his tone sharp.

Chen Guan’s fingers unconsciously brushed against the tabletop, a shadow flickered in his eyes but was quickly masked by a nonchalant smile.

”Everyone wants the life they desire; I can’t stop her, but I can take care of myself.”

”Take care of yourself? By venting your hatred through murder?”

”Hatred? How could I possibly hate her?”

Chen Guan seemed to hear something funny, even laughed aloud, ”She gives me money on time every month, I’m living off her so comfortably.”

”Tell me, why would I hate a woman who provides for me?”

”Are you not ashamed or resentful that she’s in a disgraceful line of work?”

Listening to this, the corner of Chen Guan’s mouth lifted, revealing an almost mocking expression.

”You’re overthinking it, officer.”

”What era is this? What man doesn’t love money?”

”With money, you can eat well and drink fine, wear gold and silver, and have beauties around.”

”I have a wife who can earn money, I’m nothing but happy—if it were you, wouldn’t you be happy?”

”Nonsense!”

Wan suddenly stood up, pointing at him, ”Chen Guan! Look carefully at where you are! This is not your playground for fooling around!”

Soon after, Wan launched another intensive interrogation attack, questions raining down like a torrential downpour, trying to find a flaw in the suspect’s words.

However, after an hour and a half of high-pressure confrontation, the suspect still handled it with ease, his words dodging the important and skirting the details, he never admitted any substantive matter related to the case.

At this moment, Jiang An’s expression grew heavier as he stood on the other side of the one-way glass.

The glass was thin, yet it seemed to separate two worlds—one was the psychological tussle in the interrogation room, the other was the silent reasoning and analysis within the observation room.

Zhang Yean watched the calm suspect inside the room, unable to resist lowering her voice to speak to Jiang An beside her: ”You saw the whole interrogation process just now too, he appeared too relaxed, it’s hard to spot a flaw.”

”Do you think there’s a chance we caught the wrong person? Could he be completely innocent?”

Upon hearing this, Jiang An’s mouth corner lifted slightly, exposing a smile full of implications.

He gently shook his head, replying steadily, ”We shouldn’t jump to conclusions so easily.”

”This person is likely an expert at controlling emotions and hiding true thoughts.”

”Think carefully, though on the surface he’s quick-witted, his expressions are exaggerated as if acting a solo play, but certain subtle physiological reactions and body language are telling.”

He paused, gaze still fixed on the suspect, continued, ”Do you remember?”

”When Wan inadvertently mentioned his wife’s lucrative income, the suspect’s fingers under the table unconsciously curled slightly, and there was a momentary tension in the side of his neck—typical signs of suppressed anger and tension, quickly masked by laughter and shoulder shrugging.”
