The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Two hours later, Jiang An’s phone abruptly rang in the silent office.

He quickly picked up the phone, seeing Mr. Wang from the evidence lab calling on the screen.

He pressed the answer key, and Mr. Wang’s clear voice came through the receiver: ”Mr. Jiang, there’s something I need to report to you.”

Jiang An unconsciously straightened up, listening attentively.

”Based on Mr. Wan’s provided personal items used by Li Shan during her lifetime, we conducted a systematic DNA test and analysis.”

”After comparison, we can now confirm that the skeleton found in the dried well is indeed Li Shan herself.”

Jiang An slightly frowned, asking, ”How certain are we of this conclusion?”

Mr. Wang’s answer was firm and decisive: ”One hundred percent certain.”

”We extracted trace bloodstains from a toothbrush used by Li Shan and found hair with follicle cells on her pillow.”

”These samples completely match the DNA sequence of the remains, with no possibility of error.”

Hearing this conclusive news, Jiang An’s heart, which had been hanging in suspense, finally settled down.

He exhaled a long breath and said, ”Thank you, this result is crucial to our investigation.”

After hanging up, the office returned to silence, yet Jiang An’s mind was a tumultuous sea.

He leaned back in his chair, hands crossed on the desk, deep in thought.

Since the victim’s identity has been confirmed, the direction of the following investigation becomes clear.

He knew very well that the occurrence of every case is not accidental, and there is inevitably some causal relationship behind it.

And this causality often lies hidden within the victim’s social relationships and daily interactions before death.

By delving into this clue, the truth of the case will gradually emerge.

At exactly three in the afternoon, hurried footsteps sounded outside the office door.

Wan, looking travel-worn, pushed open the door and entered, with a sheen of sweat on his forehead.

He quickly walked to Jiang An’s desk, urgently asking, ”Mr. Jiang, has Mr. Wang from the evidence lab reported the results to you?”

Jiang An nodded, signaling Wan to sit down and talk.

”The results are clear, which points us in the direction for the ensuing investigation.”

As he spoke, he poured a cup of water for Wan.

Wan took the cup and continued, ”I’ve also made some progress on my side.”

”This morning, I conducted a thorough investigation into Li Shan’s background and even visited her parents.”

He took a sip of water, organizing his thoughts, ”According to what I found out, Li Shan was raised by her uncle and aunt since childhood.”

”However, starting from six months ago, Li Shan has not contacted her uncle and aunt anymore.”

Jiang An asked thoughtfully, ”What about before that? Were they in frequent contact?”

”Not much contact before either.”

Wan flipped through his notebook carefully checking his records, ”Her uncle and aunt always thought Li Shan was working in another city.”

”After all, she’s not their biological child, so their concern was limited; they only occasionally called to check on her situation.”

Jiang An lightly tapped the table, analyzing, ”That means they are practically unaware of Li Shan’s situation in the past half year.”

”This clue may have limited value.”

He paused, then continued to ask, ”Is there anything else you found?”

”There is.” Wan leaned forward, lowering his voice slightly.

”We also found Wu Yan, who shared a rental with Li Shan.”

”According to investigations, their relationship was quite close, and they came to Jiangcheng together from their hometown. However...”

Wan’s tone suddenly became grave, ”There’s a perplexing situation.”

”Li Shan seems to have lied to Wu Yan about her job.”

Jiang An raised his eyebrows slightly, ”How so?”

”Throughout our multiple conversations with Wu Yan, she consistently maintained that Li Shan claimed to work in an electronics factory.”

”This also explains the dilemma we encountered at the initial stage of the investigation—when the precinct handled this case as a missing person, they combed through all the electronics factories in Jiangcheng, yet couldn’t find any worker named Li Shan.”

Wan’s tone carried perplexity, ”Now it seems obvious that Li Shan concealed her real employment status.”

”Even more puzzling,” Wan added, ”according to Wu Yan, Li Shan’s spending habits clearly exceeded that of an ordinary worker.”

”Though both were factory workers, Li Shan’s daily expenses and personal belongings were a notch above Wu Yan’s.”

”Wu Yan also expressed confusion about this, because she knew very well it would be impossible to support such a level of spending with a regular electronics factory worker’s income.”

Hearing this, Jiang An nodded slightly, his gaze deep and contemplative.

This new discovery subtly shifted the direction of the investigation.

Why did Li Shan hide her true job?

And what was the source of his income that exceeded the norm?

These questions swirled like riddles in Jiang An’s mind, refusing to leave.

In an instant, an idea that had vaguely formed in his mind the previous night suddenly seemed illuminated by a ray of light, becoming increasingly clear and determined.

He paused momentarily, speaking with a low and cautious voice: ”Are you suggesting... Li Shan may have been involved in the special service industry?”

Wan waved his hand in the air, his tone affirmative: ”From the current clues, this possibility is indeed quite high.”

”Think about it, a young woman without professional skills, not well-educated, and lacking social background, comes alone to this big city, yet not only doesn’t struggle for a livelihood, but lives a life far exceeding that of the ordinary working class— behind this, there must be an unknown complexity.”
