The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Seeing that Chen Guan’s psychological defenses had already cracked amid the violent fluctuations, feeling the timing was right, He continued in a steady, clear voice, ”So, your feelings toward your wife are extremely complicated—on the one hand you rely on her to win you a chance at life, yet deep down you harbor a resentment against her that you can’t dissolve.”

”On the one hand you have no choice but to live off the money she earns, and on the other you can’t bear what she has to endure. This tearing contradiction torments you day and night.”

He paused briefly, then slowly delivered his conclusion: ”And this pain that had nowhere to go eventually led you to choose another extreme way of venting.”

”You sought a warped sense of balance by hurting those innocent women.”

”You killed them not just to vent the rage bottled up inside, but also as a kind of retaliation against yourself, a compensatory psychology trying to shift your guilt. Am I right?”

Jiang An leaned slightly forward, his tone firm and composed: ”Those five murdered women all died at your hands, and your crimes followed a strict pattern—one every year, never once broken.”

”If nothing unexpected happened—” He deliberately stressed the last few words, ”you should already have locked onto your sixth victim.”

At these words, Chen Guan across from him reacted as if something had stabbed him hard; he jerked half-upright from the chair, his hands flailing in the air in a panic, his voice trembling, ”No... no, it’s not like that!”

”Officer, listen to me, I really didn’t mean it, I never thought about killing anyone!”

”It was them... they brought it on themselves!”

Chen Guan’s voice suddenly shot up, carrying an almost twisted fury. ”Especially those women who walked out of the foot massage parlors—obviously they’d already left that environment, had a chance to start over and live an ordinary life, but they just wouldn’t be content!”

”They wanted more—better lives, more respectable identities—yet they never once turned back to look at how hard people like us, still struggling in the mud, have it!”

The more he spoke, the more agitated he became; his fingers tapped the tabletop unconsciously, producing a dull thudding sound.

”You know what? Some of them, after they left, would call home, chat with friends, claiming they were doing sales, working as clerks, even making up some story about being office white-collar workers.”

”But in reality? Behind the scenes it was all filthy deals that couldn’t see the light of day!”

”Do you think a life like that is something to be proud of? And those women who hurt innocent teachers, who destroyed other people’s families—are they really innocent?”

”So you decided to deal with them through extrajudicial punishment?”

”You think you have the right to decide whether others are innocent?”

Chen Guan froze for a moment, then let out a short, cold laugh. ”Officer, you think this world is far too simple.”

”Do you have any idea? These women, once they’ve made enough dirty money, go to the hospital for a repair surgery, package themselves as pure, innocent girls, and a couple of years later they find some honest man who doesn’t know the truth and marry him, move to another city and start over—you think that’s fair to those men who treat them sincerely?”

His voice was filled with a warped sense of righteousness: ”I believe I’m not the only man in this world who can’t stand it!”

”Who can’t stand the fact that his own wife has been toyed with by so many men! It’s a desecration of marriage, a trampling on sincerity!”

”So you go kill people? That’s your reason for murder?”

”Ha, of course!”

Chen Guan suddenly burst into laughter, the sound tinged with madness and paranoia. ”I’m venting the hatred in my heart, and at the same time I’m acting on Heaven’s behalf, stopping them from hurting others!”

”You think what I did was wrong?”

”I actually think I’m ridding society of scum!”

”What awaits you next will be the full severity of the law.”

Jiang An’s voice was resolute and unyielding. ”A single peanut,” He said, ”that’ll be your final end.”

The words hit Chen Guan like a basin of cold water dumped over his head.

He suddenly went blank, lifted his hand and slapped his own face hard, as if waking from a nightmare.

Beads of sweat the size of soybeans instantly seeped from his forehead and slid down his pale cheeks.

His eyes shifted from the earlier fanaticism to growing panic, and in the end were completely swallowed by despair.

”Damn... they goaded me into this!”

He muttered to himself, his voice shaking so badly it was almost out of tune. ”Just now... just now I actually spilled everything...”

After saying this, he collapsed into the chair like a pile of sludge, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling, his lips trembling slightly. ”I said it... I said it all... it’s over...”

On the other side of the interrogation room, Jiang An and Wan exchanged a look, and both of their faces showed a sense of relief.

At this moment, standing outside the one-way mirror, Zhang Yean and the other colleagues were also breaking into gratified smiles.

”This serial murder case that’s plagued us for months can finally be brought to a close.”
