The Greykeep Chronicles

Eleanor came down to the lower hall on Wednesday at ten in the morning to seal the arch.

She’d wanted to come on Saturday. My father had said no. He’d said it gently, in the little kitchen, with his black hands wrapped in Mother’s linen and resting on the scrubbed table on either side of his tea, and Eleanor had looked at him and then at the hands and then at me, sitting at the end of the table with the tiny gold point in my palm and the crack in me still opening a little whenever I forgot to hold on, and she’d said very well, and gone up to the drafting room and not come down again for three days.

She’d been working. I knew she had; the light was on in the drafting room all night every night, and Helena took up the egg at twenty past six every morning and brought it down again at seven, cold, untouched, with the bread beside it. Eleanor only stops eating when she’s afraid of her own work. She told me that once. The autumn of the Orselle gate.

On Wednesday morning she came down the back stair with a new brass plate under her arm wrapped in a cloth, and her bone-handled chisel in its own cloth in her coat pocket, and her vinegar and her paste and her peppermints, and the look on her face of a woman who has made up her mind to do a thing correctly whatever it costs her.

I went with her. My father asked me to. Stand where she can see you. He couldn’t come himself; Mother wouldn’t let him use his hands for another day, and for once in his life he did as he was told.

* * *

The lower hall was cold. It had been cold since Saturday, since the night my father’s patience ran out standing in the middle of it with his arms around me. The black iron from the chain had all been swept up by Aldren and put in a sack, and the sack was in the corner by the cistern steps, and nobody had decided what to do with it. The pale patches on the floor where five of the six arches used to stand were white with rime.

And at the far end, the last two arches. Westmere, small, against the end wall, the plate white with holding frost. And beside it the Greymere and Orselle arch, shut, the split brass plate white too, frost on frost, the Castellan’s cold and my father’s on top of it.

And on the slate beside it, still, in the narrow gray hand:

Seraphina Grey, of Concordia. Going. Asked to.

To bring them home.

Eleanor stopped in front of the slate and read it. Twice. Lips moving. Then she put her hand flat on it for a moment, the way you’d put your hand on someone’s shoulder going past, and went to the arch.

* * *

”Castellan,” she said.

Eleanor Stonehand. The voice came out of the stone all around us. Small. Gray. Tired. It had been tired since Saturday. Mary said it had stopped lighting the lamps on the quay arches at night, because it didn’t trust itself to see what was standing beside them. You have come to seal it.

”I have.”

I cannot open it to you. I will not open it to anyone until I can see. I said so. I said so to her.

”You don’t need to open it,” said Eleanor. ”I’m going to close it properly. All the way. So that it doesn’t need you to hold it shut anymore.” She put the wrapped plate down on the floor and knelt beside it. ”Then you can rest. You’ve been holding it for five days.”

The Castellan was quiet.

There is something on the plate, it said. Under the frost. The line I cannot read. The one written over the name. I can feel it, still. Like a hand over my eyes.

”I know,” said Eleanor. ”I’m going to read it.”

* * *

She had to take the frost off first.

She did it the way she does everything with stone, slowly and without fuss. She took the vinegar and a soft cloth and worked at the edges of the old split plate, and my father’s frost and the Castellan’s came away in long white flakes and fell on the floor, and underneath, the brass came through, dull, dark, the way old brass goes when it’s been cold too long.

And on the Orselle half of the plate, cut into the brass below the old closing mark, there was a line of writing I’d never seen before.

It was very small. Smaller than any line Eleanor cuts. It went across the bottom of the Orselle half in a single unbroken thread, like a hair laid on the metal, and it wasn’t cut with a chisel. It was drawn with a brush. In the black paste. Eleanor’s paste, that smells of pine and burned hair, that she keeps in a stoppered pot in her coat and lets nobody else carry.

Except one person.

Oath-script. I can’t read it. Almost nobody can. Iselle can, and Eleanor, a little, slowly, the way you read a language you learned late.

And one other person. Who reads it better than Eleanor now. Who she taught.

Eleanor took her glass out of her pocket and bent over the line.

I watched her read it. I’ve watched her read a thousand lines, on a thousand plates, and it always looks the same: her face very still and very close to the metal, her lips moving, her glass going along the line a hair at a time. Then back to the beginning. Then along it again. Twice. She always reads everything twice.

She read it once.

And stopped.

And didn’t read it again.

* * *

She stayed bent over the plate for a long time. Her glass was still in her hand. Her face was still very close to the brass. She wasn’t reading. I could see she wasn’t reading. She was just looking at it. At the line. At the hand.

I didn’t say anything. I knew. I’d known since Saturday night, since Seraphina’s hands on my face in this same hall and That’s Wynn’s mother. I’d told my father. I hadn’t told Eleanor. Nobody had told Eleanor. My father had said, on Saturday, in the little kitchen, She’ll find it on the plate. She should find it there, herself, in her own work. Not from us. And he’d been right, and I’d hated it, and I’d sat at the end of the scrubbed table every morning since and watched her egg go up cold and come down cold and said nothing.

Eleanor put her glass down on the floor beside her. Very carefully. The way Grandpa put his mallet down on the kitchen table.

”I know every line of his hand like my own,” she said.

Not to me. Not to the Castellan. To the plate.

”I said that. On the hill. On Monday. Walking up from the quay. I said, I’d know if it was him.” She put out one finger and touched the line, very lightly, the way you’d touch a sleeping child’s face. ”And I would. I do. This is the most beautiful line of oath-script I’ve ever seen in my life. Better than Iselle’s. Better than anything I could cut if I lived to be a hundred. He’s put the Castellan’s eyes out with it, and it’s perfect. Every stroke. I’d have given him full marks.”

Her voice didn’t break. Eleanor’s voice doesn’t break. It just went very quiet, and then quieter, and then stopped.

”Wynn,” she said.

* * *

The Castellan heard it.

The name. Said out loud, by the person who’d taught him to write it, in front of the line he’d written over it. I felt the Castellan hear it. The whole lower hall shifted, the way a room shifts when someone who’s been holding their breath for five days lets it out.

Wynn Harlow, said the Castellan.

Not to us. To itself. Trying the name, the way you’d try a key in a lock you’d thought you’d lost the key to.

Wynn Harlow. Ward-keeper. I wrote you on that stone when you were fifteen. I said I would always know you. A pause. I knew you. I knew your hand. I could not see your name, but I knew your hand, and I let it open my door, because it was yours. A longer pause. I did not want to read the line, Eleanor Stonehand. I think I could have. I think I have been able to, since Saturday. I did not want to.

”No,” said Eleanor. ”Nor did I.”

She picked up the chisel.

* * *

She sealed it. I’ll set it down quickly because it’s her work and she’s told me she doesn’t want it made much of.

She cut the line out of the brass. She did it with the bone-handled chisel in one long careful stroke underneath it, lifting it off the plate the way you’d lift a splinter out of a finger, and the line came away whole, a hair of black paste and brass curling off the plate, and she caught it on her palm and put it in a fold of clean paper and put the paper in her coat pocket.

And as it came away, the Castellan could see.

I felt it. All through the lower hall, all through the walls, all through Greykeep: like a curtain going back. The Castellan breathed in, all of it, every stone, and the rime on the floor went to water and the frost on the Westmere plate went soft and clear, and the high lamps at each end of the lower hall, which had been out since Saturday, lit themselves.

Then Eleanor took the old split plate off the arch, the Greymere half and the Orselle half, and put them side by side on the floor, and took the new one out of its cloth.

It was one piece. Not split. Not shared. She’d made it in three days and three nights in the drafting room without eating, and it had one name on it and one name only: Greymere. The Orselle half was gone. She’d cut Orselle out of the arch entirely. The gate would go to Greymere, to the lake, to the shore under the castle where my father fishes on Saturdays, and nowhere else.

”Orselle can have its own arch,” said Eleanor. ”On the quay. In the spring. When I can see who’s standing on the other side of it.” She pressed the new plate home on the old stone with her palm. ”Not before.”

And she read it. Twice. Lips moving.

And put her hand flat on it.

Greymere, said the Castellan. Kept.

The arch was sealed.

* * *

That’s when the Castellan said it.

Not to Eleanor. To me. It said my name first, the way it does, and I felt it turn its attention, the slow great weight of it, from the arch to the end wall of the hall, to the little Westmere arch, small, against the stone, and past it.

Garrick Grey. There is someone in the archive passage.

Eleanor went very still.

There has been someone in the archive passage since a little after midnight on Saturday, said the Castellan. I could feel the weight. I could not see the name. I thought it was the dark. I thought it was my eyes. A pause. I can see it now.

It didn’t say the name.

It didn’t have to.

* * *

The archive passage goes back from the end of the lower hall, past the Westmere arch, about twenty feet into the rock, to a plain oak door banded with iron, with an iron ring and no lock you can see. Behind the door is the archive: every gate ledger, every ward plan Eleanor’s ever drawn, Mary’s most important letters, and, bound in black ribbon on a shelf of its own, the fair copy Wynn made of my notebook for the archive, a long time ago, in a beautiful hand.

Only five people in the world know the passage is there. Eleanor and Mary, who have keys. The Castellan. Me.

And Wynn.

Eleanor stood up.

She left the chisel on the floor beside the old split plate. She took her coat off and laid it over the plate, the way you’d lay a coat over someone asleep. Then she turned to me.

”I’m going to go and ask him,” she said. ”He’s the last one on my list. I said I’d ask him last. I said I’d ask him when he was back.” Her face was very calm. ”He’s back.”

”Eleanor—”

”Stand where I can see you,” said Eleanor. ”At the mouth of the passage. On my right. Please. I’d like you to hear it. I’d like there to be somebody who heard it who isn’t me.” She took the folded list out of her coat pocket before she let the coat go, the seven names, and held it in her hand. ”But I’m going to ask him myself.”

* * *

I stood at the mouth of the passage. On her right.

The high lamp at the end of the lower hall threw a long light down the passage, along the rough rock walls, to the oak door at the end with the iron ring. And in the light, at the foot of the door, sitting on the stone floor with his back against the oak and his knees drawn up, was Wynn.

He’d been there five days. You could see it. He was thinner than he’d been on the quay, and he’d been thin then. His face was gray with cold and dirt, and his cuffs, the inky cuffs, were black to the elbow. His pack was on the floor beside him. On top of the pack was a jar of honey. My father’s. One of Pelham’s nine. Still sealed. He hadn’t opened it.

He wasn’t hiding. That’s what I’ll always remember. He wasn’t curled into the corner or behind the pack or pressed against the wall out of the light. He was sitting in the middle of the passage in front of the door, in the open, with his hands loose on his knees, facing the lower hall. Facing the way anybody would come.

He’d been sitting there for five days, facing the way anybody would come.

He looked up when Eleanor came into the light.

He didn’t get up. I don’t think he could have. He just looked at her, with his thin gray face and his red eyes, the way he’d looked at her on the quay when she said twice, Wynn, and something went across his face and stayed there.

”I’ve been waiting,” said Wynn. His voice was cracked and dry; he couldn’t have had much water. ”For you to come and ask me. You said you’d ask me last.”

”I did,” said Eleanor.

She walked down the passage. Not fast. Not slow. The way she walks up the hill from the quay, steady, in the middle. She stopped in front of him. She looked down at him.

Then she did something I’ve never once seen Eleanor do in my whole life.

She sat down.

On the stone floor of the archive passage, in her good skirt, in front of the boy she’d chosen out of all the boys in Lyradon twelve years ago because his hand was the steadiest, she sat down, cross-legged, the way the twins had begged her to at their table, the way she’d never once sat in twenty years of springs. Facing him. Close. Knee to knee.

She unfolded the list on her lap. Seven names. Six with neat lines through them. The seventh with a small curl beside it, like a bracket.

And she asked him.

”Wynn,” said Eleanor. ”Are you all right? Is there anything you want?”

* * *

He looked at her for a long time.

At the list on her lap. At the curl beside his name. At her face, which I couldn’t see from where I stood, but which he could, and which made his own face do something I won’t write down, because it’s his and not mine.

”No,” said Wynn. ”I’m not all right.”

”No,” said Eleanor. ”I didn’t think you would be.”

”I want them home,” said Wynn. ”Mam. Clemmie. Goldie. That’s all I want. It’s all I’ve ever wanted. I did all of it for that and they’ve still got them, and I don’t know where, and I’ve been sitting here five days waiting for somebody to come and—” He stopped. ”And Seraphina’s gone after them. The Castellan said so. Through the wall. I heard it say her name going out. Asked to.” His hands were shaking on his knees now. ”She went after my mother. After what I did. She went after my mother.”

”Yes,” said Eleanor.

”Why?”

”Because she’d have done what you did,” said Eleanor. ”If it was her boy. She said so. To Garrick. Before she went.” She folded the list up again, small. ”And because Goldie walked to the dog first.”

Wynn put his face down on his knees.

Eleanor sat beside him on the stone floor of the archive passage and didn’t touch him. She didn’t say it’s all right. It wasn’t. She didn’t say I forgive you. She hadn’t, yet; I don’t think she knew yet whether she would. She just sat there, close, knee to knee, with the list folded in her hand, and let him cry into his knees for as long as it took, and when he’d finished she took a peppermint out of her pocket, from the jar in the drafting room, the jar she’s kept on her desk for twenty years for apprentices who’ve done well, and put it on the stone floor by his foot.

He looked at it.

”I didn’t do well,” said Wynn.

”No,” said Eleanor. ”You didn’t. But you’re mine. And it’s what I’ve got.” She got up, slowly, the way old people get up off floors, one hand on the wall. ”Come up to the little kitchen. Helena’s got an egg on. You’ll eat it, and then you’ll tell Uriah everything. All of it. From the beginning. And then the house will decide.” She looked down at him. ”And I’ll be sitting next to you while you do.”

* * *

He couldn’t stand. I went down the passage and helped him up. He weighed almost nothing.

At the mouth of the passage he stopped, with my arm under his, and looked across the lower hall at the Greymere arch with its new plate, one name, one piece, and the slate beside it.

Seraphina Grey, of Concordia. Going. Asked to. To bring them home.

He read it. Twice. Lips moving. The way she taught him.

Then he looked at me. At my right hand. At the tiny gold point in the middle of it.

”Is that her?” said Wynn.

”That’s her.”

”Is she—”

”She’s alive,” I said. ”She’s a very long way away. And she’s furious with somebody.”

Wynn looked at the light for a long moment.

”Good,” he said, very quietly, and we went up.

* * *

My father was sitting at the scrubbed table in the little kitchen when we came in, with his black hands in their linen on either side of his tea.

He looked up. He looked at Wynn.

And I felt it again. The cold. The bottom of the well. The thing he’d hit on Saturday night in the lower hall, the thing that had frozen every Kethran hull on the western sea from a map. I felt it come up in him, all at once, at the sight of the boy who’d opened our door. The whole little kitchen went cold. Helena’s kettle stopped steaming. Frost came up the window in plain hard ferns.

Wynn stopped in the doorway.

My father looked at him for a long, long moment, with his hands on the table and the collar halves, I knew, still in his coat pocket.

Then he looked at Eleanor, standing beside Wynn, on his right, with her hand on his arm and the folded list in her other hand.

And then he looked at me.

”Sit down, Wynn,” said my father.

He didn’t ask it. He said it.

Wynn sat.

* * *

From Mary’s book. Wednesday. Mary’s hand, small and steady:

10 a.m. Eleanor sealed the Greymere and Orselle arch. She read the line on the plate. Once. She said: I know every line of his hand like my own. She said: Wynn.

She cut the line out and kept it. The Castellan can see again. The lamps in the lower hall lit themselves.

New plate, one piece: Greymere only. Orselle will have its own arch on the quay in the spring. Not before.

Wynn Harlow was in the archive passage. Five days. Sitting in front of the door, facing the hall. Facing the way anybody would come. The honey jar unopened.

Eleanor sat down on the floor. Knee to knee. She asked him. Seven of seven.

He said: No. I’m not all right. I want them home.

She gave him a peppermint. She said: You didn’t do well. But you’re mine.

Uriah said: Sit down, Wynn. He sat.

And under it, in a small precise hand with every letter exactly where it ought to be, a hand that has spent its whole life cutting into stone where nothing can be rubbed out:

Eleanor Stonehand. I’d like it noted that I asked all seven. That I asked the last one last, as I said I would. That I was right to be sure of him. I was only wrong about what it was I was sure of. I was sure he’d never do anything he didn’t think was right. He didn’t.
