The Greykeep Chronicles

It was Mary who asked the question nobody had wanted to ask.

She asked it on Friday morning, at Helena’s kitchen table, with three ledgers open in front of her and her pen behind her ear, while my father was trying to eat his porridge.

”Where are they going to live?”

* * *

My father put down his spoon.

”Who?”

”Everyone,” said Mary. She turned the first ledger around so he could see it. ”Three hundred and eleven from Harl. Two hundred and fifty-nine from before, from the night of the blue fleet, who’ve been sleeping in the Hold and the net lofts and Tamar’s spare room and the back of the chapel for weeks. A hundred and thirty-nine farm boys from the walls. Seventeen fishermen, who have homes, but Sallow Point is two days’ walk and four of them can’t walk yet.” She turned the second ledger. ”That’s seven hundred and twenty-six people. Westmere has four hundred and eighty houses. It snowed in the Valewood hills on Tuesday; Aldren says so. It’ll snow here in a fortnight.”

My father looked at the ledger for a long time.

”Greykeep,” he said.

”Greykeep is full,” said Mary. ”Since the stream, Greykeep has been full every winter. Eleanor’s been building the north district for six years and it’s still full.” She closed the first ledger. ”I’ve done the sums three times. There isn’t room. Not for winter. Not in houses that already exist.”

* * *

Nobody said anything.

Then my mother, at the end of the table, put down her cup.

”The preserved district,” she said.

* * *

My father looked at her.

”It’s not ours to fill,” he said slowly.

”No,” said my mother. ”It’s not. But it’s not ours to keep empty either.” She turned her cup on its saucer. ”It waited to be asked once before. It took seven, that time. Liora’s been running the infirmary there for twenty years and she says half of it’s still standing shut, with the beds made, and the hearths swept, waiting.” She looked at my father. ”Nobody’s asked it since.”

”It said no to most of them, last time,” said my father.

”It said no to gods,” said my mother. ”It said yes to every mortal that ever knocked. That’s what it’s for.”

* * *

I should explain about the preserved district, for anyone who wasn’t born in Havenreach.

When my father first came to Greykeep, there was nothing under the castle but rock and old cellars. And then, when Eleanor started digging the foundations for the new town, she found that there was a city under the city. An old one. Older than Greykeep. Built by people who’d been healers, mostly, and who had made a promise to each other a very long time ago and built it into the stones.

Let no immortal enter where mortal mercy has not invited them.

That’s what’s carved over the southern arch. My father says that when the district first woke, it wouldn’t let him in. Not because it didn’t like him. Because he hadn’t been asked. He stood outside the arch for a long time, he says, until Liora, who was a young healer then, looked at him standing there and said, Oh, for heaven’s sake, come in. And it let him.

It’s a place where gods wait outside until somebody mortal invites them. The old healers called it the City of the Open Hand.

I’d been there a hundred times. I was born nearer to it than to anything else. The infirmary there is where my mother taught me to wash a wound, and where Soren, a god whose domain Varrick once took, wears an apron and changes beds and refuses to be thanked for it.

But I’d never once thought about what the name meant until that morning, in Helena’s kitchen, with seven hundred and twenty-six people in Mary’s ledger who’d spent years with a closed fist on their throats.

* * *

”I’ll go and ask,” I said.

* * *

My father looked at me.

”It won’t open for you,” he said. ”Not if you push. You know that. It’s been asked to open before by people who could open anything, and it said no. It’ll say no to you too, if you go at it like a door.”

”I know,” I said. ”I’m not going to open it. I’m going to ask.”

My father looked at me a moment longer.

Then he looked at my mother. And something passed between them, over the porridge, that I’ve seen pass between them a thousand times in my life without understanding it.

”Take somebody with you,” said my mother. ”Somebody from Harl. It should see who it’s being asked for.”

* * *

I took Wilm.

And Annick Dole, with her mill-burn on the back of her hand. And the woman from the third finger tower with the gray fist on the side of her throat that my mother couldn’t heal. Her name was Hesper. Sigrun had found it on Monday, from a smell of wet clay and a word about a potter’s wheel. She’d been a potter’s wife in a town on the Coln. She’d been Hushed for four years.

And Iselle came. She said she wanted to see it. She said she’d heard about the City of the Open Hand when she was a girl in the golden city, in a story Cerys used to tell her at bedtime, and had always thought it was made up.

Roderic wanted to come too. My mother said no. Roderic said nothing for a whole minute, which for Roderic is a kind of shouting. Iselle bent down and said something in his ear, in Kethran, and he went red, and lay back on his pillows, and didn’t argue.

My father came last. He said he’d wait outside the arch. He said he’d had practice.

* * *

I folded us to Havenreach. To the top of the eastern stair that goes down from the lower town into the old city under it, where the white road starts.

I’d forgotten how it feels. You go down the stair, and the air changes. Not warmer, not colder. Quieter. The way a house is quiet when everyone in it is asleep and nobody is ill. The road under your feet is white stone, worn smooth by a thousand years of feet, and it glows. Faintly. Just enough to see by. The walls on either side are old pale houses with doors painted in colors that have faded nearly to nothing, and herbs growing in the window boxes, and every window has a lamp in it.

Hesper stopped at the bottom of the stair and put her hand over the mark on her throat.

”It’s warm,” she said in Kethran. Very quietly. ”The road. I can feel it through my boots.”

”It does that,” I said.

* * *

The southern arch is at the end of the white road, where it opens out into the courtyard in front of the infirmary. The words are carved over it in an old hand, half worn away.

My father stopped three steps short of it. He folded his arms and leaned against the wall of the last house, the way he must have leaned there twenty-five years ago, waiting.

”Go on,” he said. ”I’ll be here.”

* * *

The courtyard was full of morning.

That’s the only way I can say it. There’s no sky down there, not really; there’s a high pale ceiling of old stone that the healers who built it made to glow like early light. But it always feels like seven o’clock on a spring morning in the courtyard of the preserved district. There’s a fountain that runs warm. There’s a fig tree that shouldn’t grow underground and does. And there’s a goat.

The goat’s name is Mallow. She is the fourth goat called Mallow, the first three having been, as Mary records it, retired with honors. She was standing in the middle of the courtyard eating a dishcloth.

* * *

Soren was in the infirmary doorway in his apron, with a basin under one arm.

He’s a god. He has a gray beard and a mended coat under the apron and he’s usually smiling. He lost his domain once, a long time ago, and Carol and I gave it back to him on a hall floor when we were three, and he’s never quite forgiven us for not asking the Council first. He’s been at the preserved district on and off for twenty years. He came to visit for a week and never left. He keeps an apron beside his bed.

He looked at me. Then at Wilm, and Annick, and Hesper, and Iselle. Then past us, at the southern arch, where my father was leaning against the wall with his arms folded, three steps outside.

Soren’s smile went very wide.

”Liora!” he called over his shoulder. ”There’s a king outside the arch again. Shall I leave him there?”

* * *

Liora came out wiping her hands on a towel.

She’s about my mother’s age. Tall, plain, with her hair tied up in a cloth and sleeves rolled to the elbow and forearms that have lifted a great many patients. She was a young healer when my father first stood outside that arch. She’s the head of the infirmary now. My mother says she’s the best healer in Avarra who isn’t a saint, and Liora says that’s only because she’s never been offered the job.

She looked at my father, out past the arch. Then at me.

”Garrick,” she said. ”You’ve brought people.”

”I have.”

”Ill?”

”Not exactly.” I looked at Hesper, at the gray fist on her throat. ”Not anything you’d put in a bed.”

Liora followed my eyes. She looked at the mark for a long moment. Her face changed.

Then she turned around and called into the infirmary, not loudly.

”Elianor. I think you should come out.”

* * *

I’d met the living saint twice in my life.

The first time I was very small, and I don’t remember it, except that she gave me a fig. The second time I was sixteen, at my mother’s birthday, and she told me I was holding my teacup like a man who expected someone to take it away from him, and I’ve never been able to hold a teacup since without thinking about it.

She came out of the infirmary very slowly, with a walking staff in one hand and Ilyen’s arm in the other.

She was old. Older than anybody I’ve ever seen. She’d chosen to be, the stories say; she’d let herself age, a long time ago, because she was tired of people looking at her young face and thinking it meant she’d be there forever. Her hair had gone from silver to white to something that was almost no color at all. Her face was lined so deeply it looked carved. There was a pale scar across the back of her right hand, older than Greykeep.

She looked at us. All of us. One at a time. She took her time about it.

Then she looked at Hesper’s throat.

* * *

”Come here, child,” said Elianor.

Hesper went. I don’t think she knew she was going to. She just went, the way you’d go toward a fire on a cold night.

Elianor didn’t touch the mark. She looked at it for a long time, leaning on her staff, with her head on one side.

”Evelyn couldn’t heal it,” she said. Not a question.

”No,” I said. ”She said it isn’t a wound. She said it’s a promise. Someone else’s, written on her.”

”Evelyn’s right,” said Elianor. ”Evelyn is very often right; it’s one of her more irritating qualities.” She leaned closer. ”It isn’t a wound. A healer can’t touch it. A saint can’t touch it. Aurelia herself couldn’t take it off.” She straightened up, slowly. ”A promise isn’t a healer’s business. A promise belongs to the Witness.”

* * *

And from behind the fig tree, a voice said, ”Then I suppose that’s me.”

* * *

The First Witness was sitting on the edge of the warm fountain with her boots off and her feet in the water.

I hadn’t seen her. Nobody had. She’s like that. She looked like a woman of about sixty, ordinary, with brown hair gone mostly silver and a dark coat patched at both elbows, and you’d walk past her in a market without looking twice. Mary says that’s deliberate. Mary says the First Witness is the oldest authority in Avarra that nobody remembers, and that she likes it that way.

Her name is Anwen. She came to Greykeep when I was small, after nobody had seen her for a very long time, and stood inside a circle on the floor of the Sanctuary of the Open Hand and wept, and then sat down at our kitchen table and had a very long argument with Mary about whether First Witness was a name or an office. They’re still having it.

She took her feet out of the fountain and dried them on the hem of her coat and came across the courtyard in her bare feet.

”Elianor,” she said.

”Anwen.”

”You sent for me at four this morning. You said someone was coming.”

”I said the road was warm,” said Elianor. ”That’s different. That’s just what it says when somebody’s on their way who needs it.”

* * *

Anwen looked at Hesper’s throat.

She looked at it the way Mary looks at a page that’s been written wrong. Very carefully. Very patiently. As if every stroke mattered and she intended to read all of them.

”The Great Oath,” she said. ”Kethran.”

”Yes,” said Iselle.

Anwen looked at her. At the inside of Iselle’s right wrist, where her sleeve had slipped.

”And the small one,” she said. ”You were a child.”

”Twelve.”

Anwen nodded slowly.

”Tell me,” she said to Hesper. In Kethran. Perfect Kethran, old-fashioned, the kind Iselle says they only use in the oath-house now. ”When you said the words. I give my face to the hand. I give my voice to the hand. Did anyone ask you whether you wanted to?”

Hesper stared at her.

”No,” she said.

”Could you have said no?”

”No.”

”What would have happened if you’d tried?”

Hesper’s hand went to her throat.

”They’d have taken my son,” she said. ”Instead of me.”

* * *

Anwen didn’t say anything for a long moment.

Then she turned around and looked at me.

”Do you know what a witness is for, Garrick Grey?”

”To see,” I said. ”And say what you saw.”

”That’s half of it,” said Anwen. ”The other half is older.” She held up her hand. Open. ”A promise isn’t a promise because somebody says the words. It’s a promise because somebody else stands there and sees them say it, and says: yes, that was freely given, and I’ll remember it. That’s what makes it bind. The words are nothing. The witness is everything.” She lowered her hand. ”Those priests in the golden city weren’t witnesses. They were hands. A hand that closes around a promise doesn’t witness it. It takes it.”

She turned back to Hesper.

”And a promise made by someone denied the ability to refuse,” said the First Witness, ”is not an oath. It never was. It’s just a thing that was done to you, wearing an oath’s clothes.”

* * *

She put out her hand toward Hesper’s throat. Not touching. Just open, palm up, an inch away from the gray fist under Hesper’s ear.

”I didn’t witness those words,” she said. ”Nobody did. Nobody who had the right. So I’m going to witness something else instead.” She looked Hesper in the eye. ”Hesper, potter’s wife, of the Coln. Did you ever, freely, give your face and your voice to anyone?”

”No,” whispered Hesper.

”I witness it,” said Anwen. ”You didn’t.”

* * *

The mark went.

Not all at once. It didn’t burn off, or flake, or fall. It faded, the way a word written on a slate fades when you breathe on it and then wipe it with your thumb. Gray, and then paler gray, and then just the faintest shadow, like the memory of a bruise. And then nothing. Just the skin of Hesper’s throat, under her ear, ordinary and pink, with a pulse beating in it.

Hesper put her hand up and touched the place.

She didn’t cry. She just stood there in the courtyard of the preserved district with her hand on her own throat, feeling her own pulse, as if she’d never felt it before.

”Oh,” she said.

* * *

The courtyard was very quiet. The fountain ran. Mallow finished the dishcloth.

Then, from behind me, out past the southern arch, I heard my father let out a long breath.

* * *

”Next,” said Elianor, the way my mother says it.

* * *

Wilm was next.

His mark was on the inside of his left wrist. Small. He’d been Hushed for two years and he’d taken the Great Oath at ten, which Anwen said, very quietly, made her angrier than anything she’d heard in a long time. He held his wrist out to her, and she asked him the question, and he said No in Kethran, very firmly, and then, after a moment, That isn’t yours, the way Adriana had taught him on the beach, and Anwen looked at him for a long moment and then smiled.

”Someone’s been teaching you,” she said.

”Adriana,” said Wilm.

”Of course,” said Anwen. ”The Saintess of Refusal. That would do it.” She held her open hand an inch from his wrist. ”I witness it. You didn’t.”

And the mark went.

* * *

Annick Dole’s was on her palm. She held out her hand with the mill-burn on the back and the oath-mark on the front, and asked whether Anwen could take one and leave the other. Anwen said she could, and that she thought it was a very sensible request, and did.

Then it was Iselle.

* * *

Iselle had been standing a little apart from the rest of us, by the fig tree, with her right hand holding her left wrist, the way she’d held it in the jolly boat on the way to the cave.

Anwen looked at her for a long time.

”Holy daughter of the golden city,” she said. ”Child of the Unnamed.”

Iselle’s chin came up.

”Iselle,” she said.

”Iselle,” said Anwen, and inclined her head, very slightly, the way you’d acknowledge a correction you deserved. ”Twelve. On a stair. With an old woman whispering to you all the way down.” She paused. ”Did you give it freely?”

”No.”

”Then I can take it off,” said Anwen. ”If you want.”

* * *

Iselle looked down at her wrist.

I watched her face. I’d seen it in the boat, and on the landing at the top of the wrist stair, and on the frozen threshold at Harl with Roderic’s blood between her fingers. I’d never seen it like this. Like somebody standing in front of a door they’d wanted to walk through for eight years, finding it open, and not going through.

”Not yet,” said Iselle.

* * *

Anwen didn’t say anything. She just waited.

”His doors know it,” said Iselle. Very quietly. ”Every door Kessavel ever built. The wrist door on Harl opened for me because of this. There are doors in the golden city that’ll open for me because of this. The priests’ house, where they keep the captains’ sons.” She looked up. ”Aldric is in there. Corvane’s son. Sixteen. Likes boats. He’s written down.” Her hand tightened on her wrist. ”And when we go and fetch him, someone’s going to have to walk through a door that only opens for the sworn.”

Anwen looked at her for a long moment.

”You’d keep it,” she said. ”Choosing it. For that.”

”Yes.”

”Then I’ll witness that instead,” said the First Witness. She held out her open hand, an inch from Iselle’s wrist, the way she had for the others. ”Iselle. Did you choose, today, freely, to keep this mark a while longer, for the sake of a boy you’ve never met?”

”Yes,” said Iselle.

”I witness it,” said Anwen. ”You did.”

* * *

The mark didn’t go.

But it changed. I saw it. The little gray fist on the inside of Iselle’s wrist went, very slightly, lighter. Not fainter. Lighter. As if something heavy had gone out of it, and only the shape was left.

Iselle looked at it. Then she put her sleeve down over it, and let go of her wrist, for the first time all morning, and let her hand hang loose at her side.

”Oh,” she said, very quietly. ”It’s mine now.”

”It is,” said Anwen. ”Kept by choice. That’s a different thing entirely. Ask any married woman.”

Elianor laughed. It was a dry little sound, like old leaves.

* * *

Then I turned around to the preserved district itself.

Not to Liora, or Soren, or Elianor, or the First Witness. To the place. To the white road and the old pale houses with their faded doors and the lamps in every window and the warm fountain and the fig tree that shouldn’t grow. To the City of the Open Hand.

I didn’t put my hand on anything. I didn’t reach for the doors. I didn’t do the thing I’ve done my whole life, the only thing I’m really good at. I stood in the middle of the courtyard with my hands open at my sides, the way my mother sits with her hand open on her knee.

”There are seven hundred and twenty-six people,” I said, out loud, to the walls, feeling foolish. ”In Westmere. Who’ve had closed hands on them for years. Most of them were Hushed. Some were farm boys on a wall. They’ve got nowhere to go this winter that’s warm, and most of them have nowhere to go home to that isn’t worse.” I swallowed. ”I’m not going to open you. I’m asking. Would you let them in?”

* * *

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then, all down the white road behind me, all through the old city, one after another, the doors began to open.

* * *

Not with a sound. Not like the sea gate at Harl, groaning on its stone. Just softly. A latch lifting. A hinge turning. A painted door swinging inward on a dark room with a hearth in it, swept and laid ready, and a bed under the window, made up with old clean linen that smelled of lavender.

And another. And another. Up and down the road. Down the side lanes I’d never been into. Up stairs I’d never noticed. Doors opening, one after another, the way lamps come on in a town at dusk, until I stopped being able to count them, and Iselle, beside me, said quietly, ”Four hundred and twelve,” and then, ”four hundred and thirteen,” and kept going.

* * *

Liora was standing in the infirmary doorway with her towel in her hands and her mouth open.

”It hasn’t done that,” she said. ”Not in twenty years. Not ever. It took seven, the last time. Seven.” She looked at me. ”What did you say to it?”

”Please,” I said.

* * *

At the southern arch, my father was still standing three steps outside, with his arms folded. I’d forgotten about him.

Liora looked at him. Then she sighed, very deeply, the way she must have sighed twenty-five years ago.

”Oh, for heaven’s sake,” she said. ”Come in.”

And he came in.

* * *

Mary’s book. Friday. Written in the courtyard of the preserved district, sitting on the edge of the warm fountain beside the First Witness, who kept reading over her shoulder and disagreeing with her punctuation, while Mallow ate the corner of the blotting paper.

Morning. Mary asked where they’re going to live. 726 people. Westmere has 480 houses. It’ll snow in a fortnight.

Evelyn said the preserved district. It’s not ours to fill, but it’s not ours to keep empty either.

Garrick went to ask. Uriah waited outside the southern arch. He says he’s had practice.

Let no immortal enter where mortal mercy has not invited them.

Soren in his apron. Liora. Ilyen. Mallow the fourth, eating a dishcloth.

Elianor the living saint came out on her staff. She said a promise isn’t a healer’s business. A promise belongs to the Witness.

Anwen, the First Witness, was at the fountain with her feet in it.

She says a promise binds because somebody stands there and sees it freely given. The priests weren’t witnesses. They were hands. A promise made by someone denied the ability to refuse is not an oath. It’s a thing done to you, wearing an oath’s clothes.

Hesper, potter’s wife, of the Coln. Anwen asked did you ever freely give your face and voice to anyone. No. I witness it. You didn’t. The mark went. Like breath off a slate.

Wilm. Taken at 10. He said No, that isn’t yours. Anwen said someone’s been teaching you. He said Adriana.

Annick asked to keep the burn and lose the mark. Anwen said very sensible.

Iselle chose to keep hers. For the doors in the golden city. For Aldric. Anwen witnessed that instead. It went lighter. Iselle said it’s mine now. Anwen said kept by choice is a different thing entirely, ask any married woman. Elianor laughed.

Garrick asked the district. Not opened. Asked. Would you let them in.

The doors opened. All down the road. Iselle counted 400-something and kept going.

Liora said it took 7 last time. What did you say to it. Garrick said please.

Liora said oh for heaven’s sake come in. Uriah came in.

And under that, in a small, upright, slightly old-fashioned hand, very neat, with the punctuation, Mary noted beside it, exactly where she wanted it and nowhere else:

Anwen, First Witness. Accepted. Repeatedly. Regretted often. Not today. I’d like it noted that I witnessed three people today who never gave what was taken, and one who chose to keep what she’d been given, and a district that said yes before he’d finished asking. And that the goat ate my left stocking, and I’d like that witnessed too.
