The Greykeep Chronicles

”Garrick,” said Seraphina. ”Hold him.”

She didn’t look at me when she said it. She didn’t take her eyes off the light by the loom. She just held our son out behind her, one-handed, at arm’s length, the way you’d hand someone a lamp in the dark without turning around.

I was there before she’d finished saying my name. I don’t remember crossing the hall. I remember the weight of him landing in my arms, warm and cross and squirming, and the heat coming off him, and the spark in his palm burning so bright now that I could see the bones of his fingers through it.

”Up,” he said, furious, past my shoulder. ”Up.”

”I know,” I said. ”I know. Not that one.”

I folded his hand closed inside mine. Gently. The way his mother had. He fought me for a moment, small and fierce and astonishingly strong, and then the spark went down to an ember and he put his face in my neck and roared.

* * *

I want to be careful how I tell the next part, because I’ve heard it told since by people who weren’t there, and they get it wrong.

They say Seraphina attacked him. They say there was a great fire in the hall at Greykeep, and she burned the emperor of Kethra out of it like a rat out of a thatch, and the windows blew in, and the long tables caught.

None of that happened.

What happened was that my wife walked down the hall.

* * *

She went slowly. Down the length of the high table, past Carol, who had stood up with frost spreading out from her feet across the flagstones in long white feathers. Past my father, who had come three steps from the door and then stopped himself, and was standing with his hands clenched at his sides. Past the long tables, and forty people pressed back against the walls, and Helena with the cake knife.

Her hands were at her sides. Open. She didn’t hurry.

Behind her, where she’d been sitting, the stone of the hearth had gone black in a ring six feet across. Every step she took, the flagstone under her foot went dark for a moment, and smoked, and cooled.

I’ve seen her afraid of her own fire. All her life, nearly. She cut a granite horse trough in half when she was nine years old because a boy pushed her into it, and the halves are still in the barracks yard at Concordia, and she has never once walked past them without looking away. Since our son was born she’s lit the nursery fire with a taper. She told Io, the winter she finally learned to use it properly on the North Sands, that she was afraid of having it with a baby on her hip.

She didn’t have a baby on her hip now. She’d handed him to me.

I understood, watching her walk, that she’d been waiting her whole life to know where to put it down.

* * *

She stopped at the edge of the loom.

Right at the line. The place where the long low wave of gold had come up against Adriana’s that isn’t yours and stuck there, pressing, like the sea against a wall. She stood with the toes of her shoes an inch from it. The light lit her face from below. It made her look very young.

Malachar was still on one knee on the other side, half risen, with his hand out toward the hearth. Toward where our son had been.

He looked up at her.

”Lady Seraphina,” he said. ”Who carries the first flame.”

”No,” said Seraphina. ”I don’t. Not anymore. I was only the one carrying it last.” She tilted her head a little toward the hearth behind her, toward me, toward the small furious bundle in my arms. ”He has it now. All of it. I’ve been wondering for a year what I was for, if I wasn’t for that.”

She looked down at him.

”I think I was for this,” she said.

* * *

”I’m going to put you out,” said Seraphina.

She said it the way Helena says you’ll have porridge. Not a threat. A plain fact about what was going to happen next.

”I’m not going to hurt you,” she said. ”Not because I couldn’t. I could. I could cut you in half from here, and the loom, and the wall behind you, and the hill behind the wall. I’ve been able to since I was nine.” Her voice didn’t change. ”But you’re not really here. You said so. And the real one of you is sitting on a step a long way off with his hands open, waiting for some doors, and I’m not going to reach all that way to hurt a man who’s sitting down.”

The light shook.

”So I’m going to burn the road you came in on,” said Seraphina. ”That’s all. The song you rode in on, and the gold you came through the fire on, and the place on the wall you’ve been standing in, nine times, where the Castellan couldn’t remember you. I’m going to burn all of it. And then you won’t be here anymore, and you can go back to your step.”

”And if I don’t go?”

”You’re going,” said Seraphina. ”You were asked. I’m only helping.”

* * *

He didn’t move.

I saw it in his face. The pride. Not hot this time. Something colder, and older, and more frightened. A man who has never once in three hundred years been made to leave a room.

”I keep my terms,” he said, very low. ”I’ve always kept my terms.”

”Then keep them,” said Seraphina.

”I can’t.” It came out of him like something torn. ”I can’t. Not with him there. Not now I know. If I go, I’ll never—” He stopped. ”You don’t understand what it is. To be half of something. To see the whole of it, an arm’s length away, holding its hands up, and be told no.”

Seraphina looked at him for a long moment.

”Yes,” she said. ”I do. I’ve been half of the first flame my whole life. My brother has the other half. I’ve never once been whole either. And I’ve been told no by people I loved, and I went.” She drew a breath. ”That’s the difference. I went.”

* * *

Then she put her hand into the light.

* * *

I don’t have the right words for what it looked like. I’ve tried for weeks. Mary tried too, that night, and in the end she wrote down one line and left the rest of the page empty.

It wasn’t fire. Not the kind you’d think. There was no roar and no smoke and no heat that you could feel, though every lamp in the great hall leaned toward her and went white. It was more like a line. A very thin, very straight white line, the color of the hottest part of a forge, that started in her open palm and went out from it through the gold.

Not through Malachar. Around him.

It went along the floor, through the long low wave of gold that was pressing against the loom, and the gold came apart along it the way cloth comes apart under the shears: cleanly, with no fraying, two halves falling away from each other. It went across the hall to the hearth, back along the path the light had taken coming out of the fire, and wherever it went the gold parted and went dim and was gone. It went up into the great hearth and up the flue, and for one moment there was a white light at the top of the chimney that people in the lower town said afterward they saw from their beds.

And then it went to the east wall. Between the third and fourth windows.

And there it stopped, and burned, and the stone there went black.

* * *

I felt something go.

I don’t know how else to put it. Like a draft you’ve never noticed until a window shuts. Somewhere very deep under Greykeep, in the stone, in the old part that was there before any of us, something that had been open for a very long time closed.

On the wall by the door, the Castellan’s lamp flared bright as day.

* * *

Malachar was still there.

Just. The light that made him had gone thin, like gold leaf held up to a window. You could see the loom through him now. You could see the east windows behind him, black with night, and the lamps reflected in them.

He looked at Seraphina’s hand, still held out, still open, with the white line going out of it into nothing.

Then he looked past her. Down the hall. At me, and at what I was holding.

Our son had stopped roaring. He’d lifted his face out of my neck and turned his head and was looking at the man by the loom with his eyes enormous and wet and very serious. He didn’t say up again. He just looked.

And Malachar looked back at him. And I saw him, for one moment, try to put his hand down. To lower it. To stop reaching. I saw how hard it was. It was like watching a man try to open a fist that’s been closed so long the fingers have forgotten.

He didn’t manage it.

”Little sister,” he said. Not looking at her. Still looking at my son. His voice was hardly there at all. ”Tell him—”

”No,” said Iselle, from under the loom. ”Tell him yourself. In the spring. If you can come and ask properly. And go when you’re asked.”

The light went out.

* * *

There’s a thing that happens when someone blows out a lamp in a dark room. For a moment afterward you can still see it, the shape of the flame, printed on your eyes in green and gold. Then it fades.

That’s what it was like. For a moment after he was gone there was still a shape by the loom, a man on one knee with his hand out, printed on the air. Then it faded too.

The hall was just a hall. Long tables. Lamps. A fire burning ordinary red in the great hearth. A black ring on the hearthstone and a black mark on the east wall between the third and fourth windows, the size of a door. A loom with a half-woven river-colored cloth on it, and not one thread of it singed.

And on the floor beside the loom, on a plate, a slice of plum cake. Untouched. Not even warm.

* * *

Seraphina lowered her hand.

She stood there for a moment at the edge of the loom, looking at the place where he’d been. Then she turned around, very carefully, the way you turn around on ice, and looked down the hall at me.

Her face was perfectly calm. Her hands were shaking.

I walked down the hall to her with our son. When I got close he leaned out of my arms toward her, and she took him, and held him, and put her face into his hair, and her shoulders went once, hard, and then didn’t again.

”I didn’t hurt him,” she said into our son’s hair. ”Did I? Garrick. I didn’t. I was careful.”

”You didn’t,” I said. ”I watched. You burned the road. You didn’t touch him.”

”I could have.”

”I know.”

”I wanted to,” said Seraphina. ”When he got up. When he reached for him. I wanted to cut him in half and the wall behind him and the hill.” She lifted her face. ”I didn’t.”

”No,” I said. ”You went the long way around. Like a road.”

She laughed then. A small cracked sound. Our son put his hand flat on her cheek, the way he does, as though checking she was still there, and the spark in his palm was quite out, and his hand was only warm.

* * *

Iselle hadn’t come out from under the loom.

She was sitting where she’d been all night, with her back against the leg of it, and Adriana’s arm around her now, and the river-colored cloth hanging down in front of her face like a curtain. She wasn’t crying. Her eyes were open and dry and fixed on the black mark on the east wall.

Roderic had got out of his chair. Nobody stopped him. Nobody even tried. He crossed the six feet to the loom on legs that weren’t meant to be carrying him yet, and lowered himself down onto the flagstones beside her, slowly, with his hand pressed to his side, and sat. He didn’t say anything. He just sat there, close enough that their shoulders touched.

After a while Iselle said, ”He didn’t go.”

”No,” said Roderic.

”I asked him. I said please. He said he keeps his terms.” Her voice was very flat. ”He didn’t go.”

”No.”

”I wanted to see what would happen if I didn’t say no to him.” She was still looking at the wall. ”That’s what happened.”

Roderic was quiet for a moment.

”He tried,” he said. ”At the end. To put his hand down. Did you see?”

Iselle turned her head and looked at him.

”I saw,” she said.

”He didn’t manage it,” said Roderic. ”But he tried. I don’t think he’s ever tried before.” He shifted, wincing, so his shoulder was more firmly against hers. ”That’s not nothing. It’s not enough. But it’s not nothing.”

Iselle looked at him for a long time. Then she leaned her head on his shoulder, and shut her eyes, and the river-colored cloth hung down over both of them.

* * *

Saba hadn’t moved from the loom.

She was sitting on her stool exactly as she’d been all night, with the shuttle laid down on the cloth. When the light went out, she’d put her hands flat on the breast beam in front of her, the way you’d put your hands on a table to steady it in an earthquake, and she’d kept them there.

Now she picked up the shuttle.

She looked at it for a while. Then she threw it.

It went across the warp, and she caught it on the other side, and brought the beater down. Once. The cloth grew by the width of one thread.

”There,” said Saba. ”That’s that.”

She threw it again.

She didn’t sing. But she wove. And after a while, very quietly, under the sound of the shuttle, Iselle began to hum. Not the wrong-boy song. Something shorter. Something with a mill in it.

* * *

My father came down the hall last.

He’d stayed by the door through all of it, the way I’d asked him to. I could see what it had cost him. His hands were still clenched when he got to us, and he had to open them on purpose, one finger at a time.

He looked at the black mark on the east wall. Then at the Castellan’s lamp, still burning far too bright by the door.

”Castellan,” he said.

The lamp dimmed, a little. The chalk on the slate under it moved. We all watched it.

East wall. Between the third and fourth windows.

A pause. The chalk trembled. Then it wrote, slowly, pressing hard:

I remember now.

There was a door there. Very old. Older than me. Somebody used it. Not often. Nine times in my keeping. I could not see who, and when they had gone I could not remember that I had not seen.

It is burned shut.

Thank you, Seraphina.

Seraphina looked at the slate for a long moment over our son’s head. Then she said, ”You’re welcome,” to the lamp, quite formally, the way she’d speak to anyone in her father’s court.

The chalk moved once more.

Nine times. He has been in this house nine times before tonight. I would like to know when.

* * *

Nobody answered that. I don’t think anybody could.

My father stood looking at the slate for a long time. Then he turned around and looked down the length of the great hall, at the long tables and the forty people still pressed against the walls, and the black ring on the hearthstone, and Helena with her knife, and Grandpa with his wooden horse in one hand and his sandpaper forgotten in the other.

”Castellan,” he said again. Quietly. ”From tonight. Nobody comes into this house who hasn’t been in it before. Not by the gates, not by the walls, not by the fire, not by a song. Anyone new comes to me first, at the outer gate, in daylight, and I’ll ask them in myself.”

The chalk didn’t move for a moment.

Then:

Everyone?

”Everyone.”

Trade. Couriers. The college. The Lyradon arch. The kingdoms.

”Everyone,” said my father. ”Until I say.”

A long pause.

Yes.

And all over Greykeep, in the dark, I heard it. Very faint. The sound of doors I’d never heard close before, closing. Gates in the lower hall that had been pinned open since Eleanor sealed them, settling shut. The big outer gate at the bottom of the hill, a mile off, swinging to with a sound like a long breath let out.

The house holding its breath.

* * *

It was past midnight before I got Seraphina up to the east wall.

She wouldn’t put our son down, so I didn’t ask her to. We sat in my nook with him asleep between us under my coat, and the stars very bright and cold over the forest, and Greykeep shut up tight beneath us like a fist. I didn’t like that thought. I put it away.

”I’ve been afraid of it my whole life,” said Seraphina, after a long time. ”The flame. The real one. The one that cuts.”

”I know.”

”I thought if I ever used it properly, really properly, in a room with people I loved, I’d—” She stopped. ”I don’t know what I thought. That I’d cut the wrong thing. That I wouldn’t be able to stop.”

”You stopped.”

”I did, didn’t I.” She looked down at our son. ”I put it exactly where I meant to. A road and a door and a song. And I didn’t singe the cloth.” She was quiet a moment. ”I didn’t know I could do that. Be careful with it. I thought it was only for cutting things in half.”

”It’s for cutting things in half,” I said. ”You just chose which things.”

She leaned her head on my shoulder.

”He’s going to come back,” she said. ”Isn’t he.”

”Yes.”

”Not like that. Not by the fire. I burned that. But some other way.”

”Yes,” I said. ”He told Iselle he’d ask her in the spring. He keeps his terms. Mostly.” I thought about his hand at the end, out toward our son, and how hard he’d tried to put it down. ”And he’s seen him now. He can’t unsee him.”

Seraphina was quiet for so long I thought she’d fallen asleep.

”Then we’ll be here,” she said at last. ”With the doors shut. And when he knocks, we’ll decide.”

* * *

The copper phoenix found us there a little before dawn.

I’d asked it on Monday, when it was rested, whether it would go back to Cardle and keep an eye on the steps for me. Not to do anything. Just to see. It had said yes before I’d finished, the way Grenna did; I think the young ones learn it from the old ones now.

It came down on the parapet much more neatly this time, and didn’t put its foot in anything, and looked at our son asleep under my coat for a while before it said anything at all.

”He’s still there,” it said. ”On the step.”

”Is he hurt?”

”No. Nothing’s burned. I looked very carefully.” It shifted from foot to foot. ”But something happened. In the night. All the gold went out of him at once, the people in the square said, like a lamp, and he fell forward onto his hands. And then he sat up again.”

”And?”

The phoenix looked at me with its bright small eyes.

”His hands,” it said. ”They were always open. On his knees. Everyone said. For a month.”

”Yes.”

”They’re closed now,” said the phoenix. ”Both of them. He’s sitting on the step with his hands closed and he’s looking north.”

Seraphina’s arm tightened around our son. Neither of us said anything.

The sun came up over the forest. Below us, the gates of Greykeep stayed shut.

* * *

From Mary’s book, that night. The entry is one line long. The rest of the page is empty, and has been left empty, on purpose; Mary says there are some nights you can only write the one true thing and leave the rest white:

Seraphina burned the road, and the door, and the song, and did not touch him, and did not singe one thread.

And on the next page, alone, in a guest’s hand. Tall, slanting, very elegant letters, the hand of a girl taught to write at her father’s court, with every line perfectly straight except the very last, which shakes:

Seraphina. I’d like it noted that I handed my son to his father before I did it. That I have been afraid of my own hands since I was nine years old. That tonight I put the fire exactly where I meant to, and nowhere else, and that I didn’t know until tonight that I could. And that I could have done more, and I didn’t, and I’d like that noted most of all.
