The Greykeep Chronicles

I want to say I thought about it. I didn’t.

People ask me that more than anything else about that night, more than the fold, more than the Choir. How did you choose? As if I stood in the passage at the bottom of the east stair with the back stair going down on one side and the kitchen door on the other and weighed them, my wife against my son, like a merchant with a pair of scales.

I didn’t. There wasn’t time, and there wasn’t any choosing in it. Seraphina had given him to Helena on the east stair and said take him somewhere nobody looks, and then she’d gone down into the dark with the Flame coming off her so that he wouldn’t have to. She’d chosen already. She’d chosen him. All I had to do was agree with her.

And he was ten feet away.

I went left.

* * *

The little kitchen at Greykeep is not a big room. It was never meant to be. It’s where Helena makes the bread and the eggs and the honey cakes, where she’s put Eleanor’s egg on at twenty past six every morning for twenty years, where I’ve eaten breakfast every day of my life I’ve been at home. A scrubbed table with a burn on it shaped like a duck. A range along one wall. A garden door with the pear tree outside. Shelves to the ceiling with crocks and jars and Helena’s good blue plates. And beside the range, built into the thickness of the old wall where a chimney used to run, a tall narrow cupboard with a pine door.

The kettle cupboard.

That’s what it’s always been called. Helena keeps the big kettles in it, the copper ones she only gets out for feast days, and the tea, all of it, every kind, in tins and jars on the shelves above, and the cups that are too good to use. It smells of tea so strongly that when you open the door it’s like being hit in the face with a warm, dry, brown cloud. It’s the size of a coffin stood on its end. Grandpa built the door himself, the first winter he came to live with us, out of a pine plank so wide he had to plane it down in the court because it wouldn’t fit through the workshop door.

As children, we weren’t allowed in it. That was the only rule Helena ever had that she meant absolutely. Not the kettle cupboard. Carol and I used to dare each other to touch the handle.

Nobody looks in the kettle cupboard. Nobody has ever looked in the kettle cupboard. It’s Helena’s.

Fenrir was lying across the door of it.

* * *

That’s the first thing I saw when I came through the half-open door from the passage. Not the men. Fenrir.

He filled the space between the range and the end of the table, a great gray hill of wolf the size of a small horse, lying flat with his chest against the pine door of the kettle cupboard and his front paws spread and his head up. The white saddle down his back where the stockpot had scalded him on Wednesday shone in the lamplight like snow on a roof. And in the white, high on his left shoulder, there was red.

A spear had gone in there. It was gone now. Someone had pulled it out, or he had. The blood ran down the white fur and dripped steadily onto the flagstones, and he didn’t look at it. He wasn’t looking at anything but the four men on the other side of the table.

He was growling. That was the sound I’d heard from the passage. Up close it wasn’t a sound so much as a weather, a low steady thunder that came up through the floor and into your feet and made the crocks on the shelves hum.

He hadn’t moved. He had a spear wound in his shoulder and he hadn’t moved one inch off that door.

* * *

Grandpa was in front of him.

My grandfather is nearly eighty. He’s a carpenter. He’s carved every wooden horse in the solar basket, hundreds of them, and he’s never once in his life hit anybody. He stood in front of the wolf in his nightshirt and his old leather apron, which he must have put on over the nightshirt out of pure habit when the bells went, with his workshop mallet held in both hands across his body like a quarterstaff. The big beechwood one with the pale handle.

There was a Kethran on the floor at his feet, sitting against the leg of the table holding his wrist, with his sword a long way off under the dresser.

And beside Grandpa, at the end of the range, with her back to the kettle cupboard and her face to the room, stood Helena, holding the poker from the range in one hand and the big iron kettle in the other, full, with steam coming out of the spout.

”Not one step further,” she was saying. ”Not one. This is my kitchen.”

* * *

There were four of them, on the far side of the table. Three on their feet, the one Grandpa had dropped on the floor. Men in black with the closed hand stitched on the shoulder. Two of them had faces; you could see them, frightened young faces, frightened the way the boy on the cutter at Westmere had been frightened, sailors in coats. The other two didn’t. Not that they had no faces, exactly. But your eye slid off them. Caitlin had said it: it’s like counting holes. They had a closed hand where a name should be, and you couldn’t hold their faces in your head any more than you can hold a hole.

One of the faceless ones was carrying something. A chain, coiled over his arm. And on the end of the chain, held up in his other hand so the lamplight caught it, an iron collar.

A small one.

The size of a child’s neck. A very young child.

And behind them, in the doorway to the garden, standing in the cold air with the pear tree black behind it, a hollow. One of the Choir. A shape made out of where somebody wasn’t. It was singing, very softly, over and over, the same name. I couldn’t place the voice; it wasn’t anyone I knew. I don’t think it was anyone the boy knew, either. He’s too young to have lost anyone. It had to borrow a stranger’s.

Uriah, it sang. Uriah. Uriah. Come out, little one. Uriah.

And I understood, all at once, standing in the doorway with my dead hand and my blood on my shirt, why they’d come for the east range. Why they’d come for him.

You can’t take a name from someone who’s holding it. That’s what Aurelia taught us. Your name’s a rope; hold both ends. Two hundred and eleven people on the servants’ stair, holding both ends. My father in the great hall. Me in the cabbages.

My son is fourteen months old. He can say up and Ma and Fen.

He can’t say his own name.

* * *

I don’t remember crossing the kitchen. Helena says I didn’t; she says I was in the doorway and then I was at the end of the table beside her and Grandpa, and she never saw what was in between. I must have folded. I don’t remember.

I remember the faceless one with the collar looking at me. His eye sliding off me as mine slid off him. And I remember him lifting the collar, not toward me, toward the kettle cupboard. Toward the wolf. As if to say: that’s what this is for. You know what this is.

And Fenrir knew.

He’d worn one. When he was young, hardly more than a cub, they chained him under a mountain, and he lay there in the dark for a thousand years. Loki told me once, a long time ago, and asked me never to speak of it in front of him, and I never have.

The growl stopped.

It was worse than the growl. The kitchen went silent, the crocks went still, and Fenrir lay across the door of the kettle cupboard with his yellow eyes fixed on the small iron collar, and his lips went back from his teeth, all of them, and he made no sound at all.

He still didn’t move. That’s what I’ll never forget. Everything in him, every bone and muscle of him, wanted to go across that table and through that man like a wall coming down. I could see it. I could see it in the fur standing up all along his back, white and gray, and in the blood running faster from his shoulder as the muscles bunched. And he stayed. He stayed flat on the floor across the door, because the door was the thing between my son and the collar, and if he left it for even one heartbeat to kill the man who carried it, the door would be a door with nothing in front of it.

He’d rather have let them put it on him again.

I think he would have. I think if they’d walked around the table and buckled that collar on his own neck, he’d have lain there and let them, as long as he was still lying across the door when they’d done it.

* * *

”Garrick,” said Helena. Quietly. Not taking her eyes off them. ”That’s the boy’s name it’s singing.”

”I know.”

”He can’t hold it.”

”I know.”

”Then we’d better hold it for him,” said Helena. And in the same flat certain voice she uses on the butcher, she said, to the room, to the hollow in the garden door, to the men, to the dark: ”Uriah Grey. Son of Garrick and Seraphina. Loud.”

It’s what Mary wrote. In the household book, on the day he was born. Uriah. Son of Garrick and Seraphina. Loud. She says Loud was the weather. None of us believe her.

The hollow’s song faltered.

”Uriah Grey,” said Grandpa. His voice shook; his hands on the mallet didn’t. ”My great-grandson. Lives here. Wants his wooden horse and the wolf and that’s all he’s ever wanted.”

”Uriah Grey,” I said. ”My son. He lives here.” I looked at the hollow in the garden door, at the shape of nobody, at the voice it had borrowed from a stranger. ”And he wants to be left alone by you. Forever. He wants you to go.”

And behind the door, behind the wolf, in the dark that smelled of tea, very small and very clear and very cross, someone who’d been woken up by all of this said:

”Fen!”

It wasn’t his name. It was the only word he had that meant the best thing in the world. And he said it the way he says it at bedtime, with his hand on the wolf’s nose, as if he were signing something.

The hollow stopped singing.

It stood in the garden door for a long moment, a shape made of absence with the pear tree black behind it. Then it turned, the way they turn, without a face to turn with, and went out into the dark garden, and I heard it a long way off, by the cabbages, start to sing someone else, and then stop, as someone else answered.

* * *

That left the men.

I want to set down what I did, because I’ve been asked, and because I’m not ashamed of it, and because it’s the first time I ever did it and I’ve done it a great deal since.

I didn’t kill them. I didn’t freeze them; my left hand was dead and my father’s frost lives in my left hand. I didn’t burn them; Seraphina’s flame had gone quiet in me since I’d come out of the fold, as if it were somewhere else, as if it were busy. I had the fold. The first thing. The thing that’s mine. And I’d just carried three hundred miles of it on my back and come out with my face in the cabbages.

I folded them to my father.

One at a time. The two with faces first. I put my right hand out, palm up, the way you’d offer someone a seat, and I folded the first one from Helena’s kitchen to the great hall, to the middle of the floor, to the field of white ice in front of my father, and I felt him land there and I felt my father look down at him and I felt the frost come up around his boots. Then the second. Then the one on the floor, still holding his wrist. Three folds, as short as folds can be, thirty yards up through the stone of the castle. They should have been nothing. They were like lifting a sack of grain each, with my back already broken.

The fourth one was the faceless one with the collar.

He saw what was happening. He didn’t wait for his turn. He threw the collar.

Not at me. At the kettle cupboard. Underhand, hard, the chain paying out behind it, the small iron ring spinning in the lamplight across the end of the table toward the pine door and the wolf lying across it.

Fenrir caught it.

He didn’t get up. He didn’t leave the door. He lifted his great head off the floor and took the collar out of the air in his teeth, the way a dog takes a thrown stick, and it stopped dead in his jaws with a clang. And he looked straight at the man who’d thrown it, along the length of the chain still in the man’s hand, and he bit down.

The iron broke.

It made a sound like a bell cracking. The collar came apart in his mouth in two pieces, and he opened his jaws and let them fall on the flagstones, clank, clank, one either side of his paws. Then he put his head back down on the floor, chin on his paws, in front of the door, exactly where it had been, and looked at the man with his yellow eyes.

The man with no face dropped the chain.

I folded him to my father. He landed in the ice, Helena says, standing up, and my father looked at him and didn’t even bother to freeze him. He just said sit down, and the man sat.

* * *

Then it was quiet in the little kitchen.

The range ticked. The kettle in Helena’s hand was still steaming. The lamp swung a little on its hook from where somebody had knocked it. The blood ran down Fenrir’s shoulder onto the white fur and onto the floor. The two halves of the collar lay on the flags.

Helena put the kettle down on the range. She put the poker back in its stand, very carefully, the right way up. Then she sat down on the bench at the scrubbed table, all at once, as if somebody had cut a string, and put both hands flat on the table either side of the burn shaped like a duck, and breathed.

Grandpa didn’t sit down. He stood where he was with the mallet in his hands. He looked at the mallet as if he’d never seen it before. Then he looked at me.

”I hit a man,” he said. ”I hit a man with my mallet.”

”You did, Grandpa.”

”On the wrist. I was aiming for the sword.” He looked at the mallet again. ”I’ve had this mallet sixty years. It’s never hit anything that wasn’t wood.” He put it down on the table, gently, next to Helena’s hands, the way you’d put down something that might go off. ”I made that door,” he said. ”The cupboard door. The first winter. Out of a plank so wide I had to plane it in the court.” His voice wobbled. ”It’s a good door.”

”It’s the best door in Greykeep,” said Helena, without looking up.

* * *

I went to the wolf.

I knelt down on the flagstones in his blood beside him, and he turned his head and looked at me. His yellow eyes were very calm. There was nothing in them now; the thing that had been in them when the collar came up had gone back wherever it lives.

”Thank you,” I said.

He looked at me.

”You can move now,” I said. ”They’re gone. You can let me see your shoulder. Mother’s in the solar; she can—”

He put his head down on his paws, in front of the door, and didn’t move.

I knew better than to ask again. You don’t ask a wall to move. I put my good hand on the white of his back, above the wound, and felt the great slow heartbeat under it, and the heat, and the blood, and left it there a moment the way Loki does. Then I got up.

”Helena,” I said. ”Can I see him?”

Helena looked up from the table. She looked at me for a long moment, at the blood on my face and the white hand and the dark eye, and something went across her face the way it had across Mary’s, and she put it away too, the way they all do, the women of this house, the way they’ve been putting things away for me since I was born.

”Ask the wolf,” she said.

So I asked the wolf.

”Fenrir,” I said. ”May I see my son?”

Fenrir looked at me. Then, without getting up, without leaving the door, without moving his body one inch off the line between the cupboard and the room, he shifted his great head aside on his paws, just enough. Just enough to let the door open a crack past his nose.

I opened the kettle cupboard.

* * *

It hit me in the face, the smell. Warm and dry and brown. Tea. Every kind of tea in Greykeep, in the dark.

Helena had taken the big copper kettles out and put them on the floor of the passage, I saw later, all six of them in a row, and made a nest on the bottom shelf of the cupboard out of the tea towels and her own shawl. And the cups that were too good to use were still on the shelf above, Helena’s mother’s cups, white with a gold rim, a whole row of them, very close over his head.

He was sitting up in the nest among the teacups.

He had Grandpa’s wooden horse in one fist, the one with the sanded ear. He had one of Helena’s tea cozies on his head, a knitted one shaped like a hen, which somebody must have put there to keep him warm, or to keep him quiet, or for no reason at all, which in this house is usually the reason. His face was pink and cross and sleepy. And his other hand, his right hand, was held up in front of him, palm out, and in the middle of the palm there was still, very faint, a small glow, like the last coal in a grate. Seraphina’s flame. And my fold, all around it, like a hand around a candle.

He’d caught me with that hand. Through the walls. Half an hour ago. He was still holding it up, as if he’d forgotten to put it down.

He looked at me in the crack of the door. He looked at me for a long time, the way he’d looked at Wynn on the quay, the way he looks at people he’s deciding about.

”Up,” he said. Firmly. As if reminding me.

”I know,” I said. ”You caught me.”

He looked past me then, at the wolf’s head lying on the flags just outside the door, with the yellow eye looking up at him. He leaned forward out of his nest of tea towels, with the hen on his head, and put his glowing hand flat on Fenrir’s nose.

”Fen,” he said.

And Fenrir closed his eyes.

* * *

I closed the door again. Gently. Fenrir moved his head back across the crack, chin on his paws, and sighed through his nose, a long breath that stirred the dust on the flagstones.

”He’s safe here,” I said.

”He’s safe here,” said Helena.

”Nobody looks in the kettle cupboard,” said Grandpa. He’d picked the mallet back up. He was holding it the way you’d hold a walking stick, leaning on it a little. ”Nobody’s ever looked in the kettle cupboard. Not in all the years since I hung that door. I’d like to see them start now.” He looked at the door, the good pine door, his door, with the wolf lying across it. ”We’ve got him, Garrick.”

”I know.”

”Then go and get your wife,” said my grandfather.

* * *

I went.

At the kitchen door I looked back once. I want that written down. I looked back, at the little kitchen in the lamplight, with the burn on the table shaped like a duck and the two halves of an iron collar on the floor and Helena sitting at the table with her hands flat on the wood and Grandpa standing with his mallet and the great gray wolf with his white saddle and his red shoulder lying across the pine door of the kettle cupboard, chin on his paws, eyes open, watching the room.

Behind the door, my son, among the teacups, with a hen on his head.

Then I turned around and went down the back stair, past the old cellars, toward the lower hall.

The singing was fainter down there. The Choir had gone up; there was nothing left in the lower part of the castle for it to sing to. But there was another sound coming up the back stair to meet me, out of the dark at the bottom, growing as I went down.

A chain. A long iron chain, being drawn slowly across stone, link by link, the way you’d draw in an anchor.

And over it, under it, around it, a roar like a forge with all the bellows going at once, and a light coming up the stair, red and gold, so bright it threw my shadow up the steps behind me, enormous, a giant going down into a fire.

Seraphina.

* * *

From Mary’s book. Saturday. A page in the same small, straight hand, but larger here, and less careful, as if written faster:

The kettle cupboard. Helena put Uriah on the bottom shelf in a nest of tea towels and her own shawl, with the good cups over his head and a hen cozy on his head. Nobody looks in the kettle cupboard.

Four men came down the east stair. One had a collar. A child’s collar.

The Choir sang his name, and he can’t say it yet. Helena said it for him. Grandpa said it. Garrick said it. He said Fen.

Grandpa hit a man with his mallet (on the wrist). Helena held the kettle (full, boiling). She did not have to use it. She says she would have.

Fenrir took a spear in the shoulder and did not move off the door. He caught the collar in his teeth and broke it in two. He did not move off the door to do it.

Garrick folded the four of them to Uriah in the great hall. Uriah told the last one to sit down, and he sat.

And under that, in a big, square, slow carpenter’s hand, every letter shaped with care, pressed hard, the line sloping a little downhill toward the end the way it does when an old man’s tired:

Garrick Valewood, called Grandpa. I’d like it noted that I made that door the first winter, out of a plank so wide I had to plane it in the court, and that I was told at the time it was too heavy for a cupboard, and I said a door should be heavier than what it’s for. It held. And that it wasn’t the door that kept him. It was the wolf. I only made the door.
