The Greykeep Chronicles

I have seen a lot of faces change.

I’ve seen Carol’s go white on the night of the frost. I’ve seen my father’s go gray on the north pier with the sea standing up behind him. I’ve seen Iselle’s when the door on Harl knew her. I’ve seen Corvane’s when I asked him his son’s name. I thought I knew most of the ways a face could go.

I had never seen anything like Malachar’s face when he saw the light in my son’s hand.

It didn’t go pale. It couldn’t; it was made of light. It didn’t go angry, or frightened, or glad. It went open. All at once, the way a door opens when the latch gives that you’ve been leaning on for years. Everything that had been held behind it came forward into the gold. And what came forward was so naked and so enormous that I wanted, very badly, to look away, the way you look away from someone weeping in the street.

I didn’t. I kept my good eye on him.

Seraphina had closed her hand over our son’s. Gently. Not hiding it. Just covering it, the way you’d cup a candle in a draft. But it was too late for that, and she knew it, and so did I.

He’d seen.

* * *

”Whose child is that?” said Malachar.

His voice had gone very quiet. Not hoarse anymore. Something under the quiet, like a river under ice.

”Mine,” I said.

I said it before anyone else could. I wanted it said by me, plainly, from where I was standing, so there’d be no mistake in anybody’s mind about whose it was to answer.

He didn’t look at me. He couldn’t stop looking at the hearth. At Seraphina’s closed hand, and the small fist inside it, and the faint gold glow that was coming out between her fingers now, because our son had been told no by his mother’s hand and was not at all pleased about it.

”Yours,” said Malachar. ”And hers.”

”Yes.”

”The flame that was first.” He said it slowly, as though each word had to be carried up from very deep. ”And you. You hold— You borrow. You borrowed my sea from your father. You borrowed a town from a net-mender’s son. You hold the gifts of the gods in your hands and give them back.” He stopped. ”When the one who holds a gift of the gods is joined to the flame that was first—”

Nobody moved.

* * *

I should explain this. I’ve written it down before, but not everyone who reads Mary’s book will have read that far back, and it matters for what happened.

There’s a saying in Kethra. It’s carved over every door in the golden palace, on the inside, where the people who live there have to see it every time they go out. Iselle told it to us once, the way her old teacher wrote it on her slate when she was small. Four lines. The fourth one breaks off in the middle, because somebody cut the end of it out of every copy in the world before Malachar was born.

When the one who holds a gift of the gods

is joined to the flame that was first,

the half shall be made whole.

And the hand that holds it shall—

Malachar has believed for three hundred years that he’s the half. Half a god. His father’s son and his mother’s, neither one thing nor the other. He believed that if he could have Carol, who holds a gift of the gods, and Seraphina, who carries the first flame, he’d be made whole. That’s what the letter was. The autumn letter with the gold seal and the two black boxes. That’s what the whole war was, underneath. A man trying to finish a sentence.

I worked out a long time ago, on a cold night with my father beside me shaking his head, not here, what the saying actually meant. I hadn’t told Malachar. I hadn’t told Iselle; she’d asked us not to tell her anything about the saying she hadn’t asked for, and she hadn’t asked.

I watched Malachar work it out now, in the space of four lines, sitting on my floor.

* * *

He said the second line, and the third, under his breath, the way you’d say something you’d said ten thousand times, in the dark, to get to sleep.

And something odd happened while he said them. I noticed it because I was watching everything at once, the way my father taught me to on Harl. Saba’s foot, under the loom, moved on the treadle. Not pressing it. Just finding it. Keeping time. As though the lines had a beat to them that her foot already knew.

I didn’t understand that. Not then. I put it away to think about later.

”The half shall be made whole,” said Malachar.

He looked at my son.

My son, who has my chin and Seraphina’s hair and his grandfather’s way of looking at you as though he’s working out what you’re for. Who has every gift I have, borrowing and keeping, and every gift his mother has, the whole of the first flame and not half of it. Who was born of the one who holds the gifts of the gods, joined to the flame that was first.

The half made whole.

Not Malachar. Never Malachar. A baby with jam on his chin, in his mother’s lap by a fire, in a house in the north he’d never once been asked into until tonight.

* * *

I watched it land.

I’m not sure I can describe it. I’ll try, because Mary says the things that are hardest to write down are usually the things that most need writing.

It was like watching a tower fall very slowly. Not all at once. Stone by stone. Three hundred years of stone. The gold in his face didn’t go out. It shook. Like a flame in a doorway when someone opens a window on the other side of the house.

”It was never me,” he said.

Nobody answered him.

”Three hundred years,” said Malachar. He wasn’t speaking to anyone. ”I read it over every door. Every morning. I thought it was a promise. I thought it was waiting for me.” His hands on his knees were closing and opening, closing and opening. ”I sent for her. For the flame. I sent ships. I sent the gray one. I sent—” He stopped. ”And it was here. It was in a nursery in the north. It was never waiting for me at all.”

* * *

The pride came then.

I’d been waiting for it. I’d seen it twice already that night: once when I told him to stop leaning on the room, and once when Iselle asked him about the page. Both times it had flashed up and gone down again, like a fire in a stove when you open the door and then shut it.

This time it didn’t go down.

It came up in him like a flood tide. The gold went bright, then brighter, then bright enough that people at the near tables put up their hands to shade their eyes. He straightened, there on the floor. His chin came up. And his face, which had been open and naked a moment before, closed over again, hard and beautiful and very, very old.

”Then it was hidden from me,” he said. Not quietly now. ”It was kept from me. By the one who cut the saying. By your gods, who knew and never said. By you.” His eyes came to me at last. ”You knew.”

”Yes,” I said.

”How long?”

”Since the night Iselle told us the saying. My father and I.”

”And you didn’t tell me.”

”No,” I said. ”It wasn’t yours to know.”

* * *

That landed harder than anything else I said all night. I watched it go in.

Three hundred years of everything being his to know. Every river, every harvest, every price of bread in every harbor town. Every song a woman sang at a loom at the end of a lane, if he could hear it. And a man with one eye standing at the end of a hall in the north telling him that there was a thing in the world that wasn’t his to know.

The light in him flared so hard the east windows rang.

”Garrick,” said my father, very quietly, from the door.

”I know,” I said.

”Do you?”

”Yes. Stay there.”

My father stayed there. I want that put down too. He’s my father and the king, and that was his hall, and he stood by the door in his socks and let me have it.

* * *

”What do you want?” I said to Malachar.

He stared at me.

It’s the third question. Name, home, want. My mother’s rule, and Rysa’s before her, and everyone’s now. I’d asked it of Pask on Cardle beach on Sunday morning, and of Corvane in his strongroom, and of two hundred farm boys at a table on the north quay with Mary’s green ledger open in front of them. Selvane told me once that Malachar always asks permission, perfectly, every time, but never asks anyone what they want. And that nobody has ever asked him either.

So I asked him.

”What do you want?” I said again. ”Not what you think the saying says. Not what you were promised. You. Sitting there. Now.”

The light in him held still.

For a long time he didn’t answer. I think he was doing what everyone does the first time they’re asked that question. Looking for a coat in a dark cupboard.

”To be whole,” he said at last.

His voice had gone quiet again. All the bell had gone out of it.

”I have been half of something for three hundred years,” he said. ”Half my father’s. Half my mother’s. Never all of anything. Never enough. I hold everything I can reach because I’m afraid that if I let go of any of it, I’ll find out there’s nothing in the middle.” He looked at the hearth. At my son. ”And there he is. Whole. Born whole. In a house where they ask him what he wants every morning and he says jam.”

* * *

I don’t know how he knew about the jam. He might have heard it. He might have guessed. Every baby wants jam.

But it went through me like cold water, all the same.

”He’s not a flame,” I said. ”He’s not a gift. He’s not a thing anybody carries. He’s a person. His name is Uriah. After my father.” I took one step forward. Just one. Onto the flagstones in front of the high table, where the light from the loom fell across my boots. ”And whatever you want, you’ll have to find it somewhere that isn’t my son.”

Malachar looked at me for a long moment.

”Uriah,” he said. Turning the name over. ”After the one who stopped my sea.”

”Yes.”

”And the one who stood on my wave for a night and a day, holding it.” Something moved at the corner of his mouth, and it wasn’t a smile, and it wasn’t the place a smile would be either. It was something older and harder. ”They’ve given him a great deal to carry, for someone so small.”

”He’ll carry it,” I said. ”We’ll help.”

* * *

He was quiet for a while after that. The light settled. Not all the way. Like a fire that’s been banked for the night, still red underneath.

Then he did the thing he’s always done. The thing Selvane said he does perfectly, every time. He asked permission.

”May I hold him?” said Malachar.

He said it beautifully. Courteously. Looking at Seraphina, not at me, the way you’d ask a mother. His hands were open on his knees. He didn’t lean. He’d learned that much in an hour. He sat on the floor exactly where Saba had told him to sit and asked, the way a guest asks, in a voice with no pull in it at all.

And I understood, listening to him, that this was the most dangerous thing he’d said all night. Because it was so reasonable. Because he’d asked. Because everyone in my family has been raised since the cradle to answer a question that’s asked properly, and to be kind to a guest, and the whole hall could feel how much he wanted it.

Seraphina didn’t answer. She looked at me.

”No,” I said.

He turned his head.

”You asked,” I said. ”Properly. I’m answering properly. No. Not tonight. Not because you’re not sorry, or because you didn’t ask well. Because he’s ours, and you’ve wanted him for three hundred years without knowing his name, and I’ve known it for a year and I’m still learning him.” I kept my voice steady. ”You can say no to a thing that’s asked properly. That’s the other half of asking. Nobody ever taught you that half either.”

For a moment the gold went up in him again, hot. Then it came down.

”No,” he repeated. As though tasting it.

”No.”

He bowed his head. Just slightly. And sat back on the floor.

* * *

It might have ended there. I’ve thought about it a great deal since. I think it nearly did.

But my son had been awake for some time now, and he’d been told no by his mother’s hand, and he’d been looking at the brightest thing he’d ever seen for longer than any baby can look at anything without wanting it. And he did what he does with everything he wants. With the shuttle. With the jam. With Teague Pelham on the north quay, a week ago, standing in a crowd of strangers.

He wriggled one arm free of Seraphina’s grip. He stretched it out toward the loom as far as it would go, fingers spread, with the little spark in his palm burning brighter now, gold as the light by the loom, gold as the man sitting there.

And he said, very clearly, the way he says it to everyone he decides he likes:

”Up.”

* * *

The whole hall heard it.

I watched it go into Malachar the way the spark had. Not like a blade. Like a key.

Nobody had ever asked him to hold them. I’m certain of that. Three hundred years of holding everything, and not once in all that time had anybody held up their arms to him because they wanted to be held. He held rivers and harvests and the price of bread. He held a whole country so tightly it forgot how to want things. He held his sister on a black page.

Nobody had ever said up.

And he wanted to. I saw it. I saw it come up in him past the pride, past the three hundred years, past everything. Not the saying. Not the whole. Just a man made of light, sitting on a stone floor, being asked by a baby to pick him up, and wanting to more than he’d ever wanted anything.

He moved.

”He asked,” he said. Very low. To me, or to himself. ”He asked me.”

”He’s one,” I said. ”He asks the cat. He asks the shuttle. He asked a farm boy he’d known for a minute.” I didn’t take my eye off him. ”He doesn’t know what he’s asking for. You do.”

* * *

It wasn’t much. His hands came up off his knees. That was all.

But Saba had said: You’ll sit on the floor. And he was getting up.

He got one knee under him. The light came off him in a long low wave across the flagstones toward the hearth, the way it had come out of the fire, like the light under a door. Not grabbing. Not yet. Reaching. The way my son was reaching.

”That isn’t yours,” said Adriana.

She hadn’t moved from where she sat under the loom beside Iselle. She didn’t raise her voice. She never does. She just said it, the third kind of no, the one she’d taught her children in the sand at Westmere with the sea coming in. I won’t. Not me. That isn’t yours.

The wave of light stopped.

It stopped at the edge of the loom. Right where Saba had drawn the line. As far as the loom. I could see it there, a long bright edge across the stones, pressing against something nobody could see, the way the sea had pressed against my father’s hand on Cardle beach. Held.

But it didn’t go back.

It pressed. Harder. I could feel it. The whole hall could. Like standing on the wrong side of a dam.

* * *

”Malachar,” said Iselle.

She’d got to her feet. I hadn’t seen her do it. She was standing under the edge of the loom, with the river-colored cloth brushing the top of her head, and her hands at her sides, open.

He turned his head toward her. Still on one knee. Still reaching.

”You said you keep your terms,” said Iselle. ”My mother’s terms. As far as the loom. Sitting on the floor. And when I ask you to go, you go.”

He looked at her. And I saw in his face that he knew exactly what she was about to say, and that he couldn’t bear it, and that he was going to make her say it anyway.

”I’m asking you to go,” said Iselle. ”Now. Please.”

* * *

The light by the loom shook.

He didn’t go.

He didn’t come forward, either. Not one more inch. Adriana’s that isn’t yours held him at the edge of the loom like a hand on his chest. But he didn’t go back into the wall, and he didn’t go back into the fire, and he didn’t sit down. He stayed exactly where he was, on one knee, half risen, with his hand out toward the hearth and his face turned toward his sister, and the gold coming off him in waves.

”One moment,” he said. His voice was cracked all the way through. ”Just one. Little sister, I only want to—”

”I know what you want,” said Iselle. ”You said. I heard you. I asked you to go.”

He didn’t go.

* * *

On the bench by the hearth, Seraphina stood up.

She did it slowly. Our son on her hip, his arm still stretched out, still saying up, up in the cross small voice of a baby who’s been told no twice. Her free hand had come away from him. It hung at her side.

The stone of the hearth behind her had gone black. Not dark. Black, in a ring six feet across, smoking.

I’d seen her like that before. On the North Sands at low tide, the morning Io made her use it properly. When she was nine, a boy pushed her into a horse trough at Concordia, and she cut the trough in two, and the halves are still in the barracks yard.

She looked down the hall at the man made of light, kneeling at the edge of Saba’s loom with his hand out.

”You were asked,” said Seraphina.

Her voice was perfectly calm. It was the calmest I’ve ever heard it.

”By his sister. In her mother’s house. You were asked to go, and you said you keep your terms.” She shifted our son on her hip, slowly, so that he was behind her shoulder and not in front of it. ”You were asked.”

* * *

From Mary’s book, that night. This page is the shortest, and the writing goes downhill toward the bottom, and the last line is barely a line at all:

He saw the baby’s hand. He asked whose. Garrick said: Mine.

He said the saying. Four lines. Saba’s foot found the treadle while he said it.

He understood it. He said: It was never me. Three hundred years.

Then he said it was hidden from him. He said: You knew. Garrick said: It wasn’t yours to know. The east windows rang.

Uriah said Garrick. Garrick said: Stay there. Uriah stayed there.

Garrick asked him what he wants. He said: To be whole. He said the baby was born whole in a house where they ask him what he wants every morning and he says jam.

Garrick said: He’s a person. His name is Uriah. Find it somewhere that isn’t my son.

He asked: May I hold him? He asked properly. Garrick said: No. He said that’s the other half of asking. He sat back down.

The baby said Up.

He got up on one knee. Adriana said: That isn’t yours. It stopped at the loom. It didn’t go back.

Iselle said: I’m asking you to go. Now. Please.

He didn’t go.

Seraphina stood up.

And under that, in a hand that is not a guest’s hand at all, but one of the youngest hands in the house, large and crooked and fiercely pressed, in green ink stolen from Mary’s own inkpot while she wasn’t looking:

Faelan Grey. I’d like it noted that I wasnt in bed. That he said Up to a man made of fire and I would of said Up too if I was little. That it isnt his fault for wanting to. That it is the mans fault for not going when Iselle said please. And that Mama said That isnt yours and it STOPPED.
