The Greykeep Chronicles

The king of Tirrowmarch came to Greykeep on foot.

I want to start there, because it’s the thing I remember first about that Sunday, before the harbor and the pigeon and everything Corvin told us afterward in the little kitchen with pear juice running down his wrist. A king walking up the river road in the frost at seven in the morning, alone, in a brown coat with the oak-and-plough on the shoulder, with mud to his knees and his breath smoking.

He’d sold his horse. Two winters ago, for seed. Everyone in the north knew that story. It was one of the things people said about Tirrowmarch, the way they said Belleren’s roads were fine.

He stopped outside the little door in the outer gate and looked through the bars at my father, who was on the stool, because it was Sunday and my father had said he’d take Sundays.

”Uriah,” said the king of Tirrowmarch.

”Aldwin,” said my father. He stood up. ”You walked.”

”You said come and ask you to your face.” The king of Tirrowmarch was a thin, tired, sandy man of about fifty with a farmer’s hands and a face that had been worried for a long time. ”So I’ve come. It’s a long way to walk to be lied to. I’d like to know before I start back.”

* * *

My father didn’t ask him in. Not straight away.

He’d never been in. That surprised me when I thought about it later. Tirrowmarch is a small court, two valleys and a market town, and in my father’s war it had sent forty men and a cart of bandages and stayed out of the rest of it, and since then it had sent a letter at midwinter and very little else. Nobody had ever come from Tirrowmarch to Greykeep in person. I don’t think anyone at Greykeep had ever gone to Tirrowmarch either.

So the Castellan didn’t know him. And my father, who could have asked him in with three questions and a word to the air, didn’t.

He opened the little door and went out instead. The way I’d gone out to Garth. And stood on the frozen road on the outside of his own gate, in his shirtsleeves, in the cold, face to face with the king of Tirrowmarch.

”Ask,” said my father.

* * *

”Blackstack,” said Aldwin. ”The empty rock. Your Loki made a Kethran fleet see a thing that wasn’t there, to save Westmere. You told my courier so. Yes, you said. We did.” He looked at my father steadily. ”And then you said a house that lies to an enemy is a house that’s been driven to it. And that I should come and ask you whether you’d lie to me.” He drew a breath. ”So. I’m asking. Would you?”

My father was quiet for a long moment. The frost was coming off the road around his feet in a faint white haze; it does that, near him, when he’s thinking.

”I don’t know,” he said at last.

The king of Tirrowmarch stared at him.

”I’d like to say no,” said my father. ”I’d like to stand here and tell you that I’d never lie to a friend, not for anything. And it’d be a good thing to say, and you’d walk home happier.” He looked at Aldwin. ”But I’d have said the same about an enemy, before Westmere. I’d have said it was beneath me. And then there were nine thousand people in the Hold and a fleet outside the harbor and I asked Loki to lie for me, and I’d do it again.” He shook his head. ”So I don’t know what I’d do, if the day came. I’d hope not. I’d try not. That’s the truth, and it’s the best I’ve got. I’m not going to make it prettier for you.”

* * *

The king of Tirrowmarch looked at him for a very long time.

Then he laughed. It was a short, startled, hoarse sound, as though he hadn’t laughed in a while and had forgotten how it went.

”That’s the first honest thing a king’s said to me in twenty years,” he said. ”Everyone else would’ve said no.” He rubbed his face with both hands. ”Kethra said no. In a very beautiful letter. We would never lie to Tirrowmarch. With a bag of seed corn and a promise about my sons.” He looked at my father. ”I believed that one for nearly a month.”

”What changed?”

”You said I don’t know,” said Aldwin. ”Just now. Kethra’s never once said that. About anything.”

* * *

That was when Corvin came up the hill.

He came on foot as well, from the river quay, where the Belleren barge had put in at dawn. I saw him from the stool, a long way down the road, and knew him at once from the way he walked: stooped, gray at the temples, slow and steady, carrying something. He always carries something. That day it was a basket of pears in one hand and a long leather map-case under his other arm.

He’d been in before. Many times. The Castellan knew him; the little door would have opened for him without anyone asking. But when he reached the gate and saw my father standing outside it on the road with the king of Tirrowmarch, he stopped beside them instead, and put the basket down, and bowed to Aldwin.

”Your Majesty,” he said. ”I’d hoped I’d find you here. I sent a boy to your inn at the quay last night, but they said you’d started walking before he arrived.” He turned to my father. ”Uriah. Forgive me for not asking first. I’ve come about Amberlay.”

* * *

We went up to the little kitchen. All of us. My father asked Aldwin in at the gate first, properly; the slate in the arch wrote Aldwin. Tirrowmarch. Walked. and nothing else, because that was all Aldwin said when my father asked him what he wanted.

Melody was in the kitchen when we came in. She saw Corvin and put down what she was holding, which was a pot, and crossed the kitchen and put her arms around him, pears and map-case and all. He stood very still and let her, and closed his eyes. Mary came in from the stair a moment later, and saw them, and smiled, and put her hand flat on his chest the way she does, and said, ”You’re early. It’s not midwinter.”

”No,” said Corvin. ”I know. I’m sorry. I couldn’t wait for midwinter.”

* * *

He unrolled the map-case on the kitchen table while Helena fed everyone.

It was a map of the north. Not the big one in the south solar. A small, worn, much-folded thing, the kind a man carries on a barge, with the rivers in blue and the roads in brown and the courts marked in red: Belleren and Velden on the great river, Tirrowmarch in its two valleys, Amberlay on the coast. And a dozen others, smaller still. Courts I’d heard of and never thought about. Fern Ford. The Marrish towns. Esk.

”Odile came through Belleren last night,” said Corvin. ”On her way home from Greykeep with the asking, the night before last. She stopped at the ferry and told the ferryman, and the ferryman told my aunt.” He looked at Seraphina. ”Queen Nerisse sends her love and says she’d like very much to meet you. She says anyone who can sit for an hour with her hands flat on the Amberlay council table without moving them is either very good or very frightened, and she’d like to know which.”

”Both,” said Seraphina.

”That’s what she said you’d say.”

* * *

”Amberlay goes down to the harbor at dusk tonight,” said Corvin. ”The whole council. And the whole town behind them. To say no to the priests’ faces.” He put his finger on the coast. ”And Amberlay asked Greykeep not to come. Odile told us that too. This is Amberlay’s no.”

”Yes,” said my father.

”Agnes Marren is right,” said Corvin. ”If Greykeep stands behind them, the priests will go home and say the north made them refuse. And half the minor courts in the north will believe it, because half of them have Kethran gold in their forecourts and Kethran letters in their council chests and no reason in the world to trust a great house that sent them advice for twenty years and nothing else.” He didn’t look at my father when he said it. He didn’t need to. ”Forgive me.”

”No,” said my father. ”It’s true.”

”So Greykeep can’t go.” Corvin moved his finger. Belleren. Velden. Tirrowmarch. ”But Amberlay didn’t ask Belleren not to come.”

* * *

The kitchen was very quiet.

”I’m not going to stand behind them,” said Corvin. ”That’s Greykeep’s mistake and I won’t make it. I’m not going to stand in front of them either.” He drew a line with his finger along the edge of the coast, very gently. ”I’m going to stand beside them. On the harbor wall. Not with the council. With the town. With the widows and the children from the new school and the farmers. As a neighbor. As a witness.” He looked up. ”And I’d like not to be the only one.”

He looked at Aldwin.

”Velden’s coming,” he said. ”I rode there yesterday. Their king’s taken the Kethran gold and built a bridge with it and he’s ashamed of himself and very glad of the bridge, both at once, and he said if Belleren’s going he’ll go, and so will half his town. Fern Ford’s coming; they’ve only got sixty people, but all sixty are coming. The Marrish towns I haven’t heard from.” He paused. ”Tirrowmarch took a bag of seed corn and a promise about its sons. Same as Amberlay. Same letter, near enough.”

”Yes,” said Aldwin, very quietly.

”So if Tirrowmarch stands on that wall tonight beside Amberlay,” said Corvin, ”the priests can’t say the north made them do it. Because the north won’t be there. Only the courts that took the gold. Standing beside the one that’s saying no.” He spread his hands flat on the map, the way Seraphina had spread hers on the council table. ”That’s the line. Not soldiers. Not a wall. Just the small courts, in a row, on a harbor at dusk, watching. So that the hand can see who’s watching.”

* * *

Aldwin didn’t answer for a long time.

”I sold my horse for seed,” he said at last. ”Two winters ago. And this autumn a man came and left a bag of Kethran seed corn in the forecourt, better than any I’ve ever planted, and a letter that said my sons would never be taken, and I believed it for a month.” He looked down at the map. ”It’s a long way to Amberlay. On foot.”

”I’ve a barge at the quay,” said Corvin. ”And a horse for you at the other end, if you’ll take one. You can say no.”

The king of Tirrowmarch looked at him.

”You’re Nerisse’s nephew,” he said. ”The one who courted the scribe during the war.”

”Yes,” said Corvin.

”And she said no.”

”She told me first,” said Corvin. ”That she loved someone else. Before anyone else knew. Before she’d told the someone else.” He didn’t look at Mary. Mary didn’t look at him. Melody, at the stove, had gone very still. ”I’ve thought about that every day for twenty years. That she told me first. That she didn’t let me find out from somebody else. That she asked herself what I’d want, and decided I’d want the truth, and gave it to me to my face.” He looked at Aldwin. ”That’s what I’d like to give Amberlay tonight. Not a promise. Just the truth, to its face. That it isn’t alone.”

* * *

The king of Tirrowmarch stood up.

”I’ll take the horse,” he said.

* * *

They left at ten. Corvin and Aldwin, down the hill to the Belleren barge. Corvin stopped at the gate on his way out and looked back at me where I was sitting on the stool again, because my father had gone up to sleep at last.

”Garrick,” he said.

”Corvin.”

”You’ll want to come.”

”Yes,” I said. ”Very much.”

”Don’t.”

”I know.”

He looked at me for a moment longer. He’s known me since I was four years old and bit the top off his cake at Mary’s wedding. He has a way of looking at me that makes me feel about four still.

”If it goes wrong,” he said, ”if the ship does something, if the priests do something, I’ll send to you. Not before. Not because I’m frightened. Only if Amberlay asks.” He paused. ”And it won’t be me who asks. It’ll be Agnes Marren. Or nobody.”

”Or nobody,” I said.

He nodded once, and picked up his empty basket, and went down the hill.

* * *

It was the longest evening of my life.

I’m not exaggerating. I’ve sat on a road all night outside my own gate with a wolf. I’ve stood on Harl at the dark of the moon waiting for a sea to fall. I’ve waited at the bottom of a hill in Cardle while a man made of light decided whether to look at me. None of those was as long as Sunday evening at Greykeep, waiting for dusk in Amberlay, not going.

I went up to the east wall at four. My nook. I sat there with my boots on and my coat on and my hands in my lap and watched the sun go down over the forest, very red, very slow. In Amberlay, on the coast, it would go down a little later. Over the sea.

Seraphina came up at five with our son and two cups of tea and sat with me. She didn’t say anything. She put her hand flat on the stone between us, and it got warm.

Carol came up at half past and sat on my other side. She didn’t say anything either. There was frost on the stone where she sat, and warmth where Seraphina sat, and I sat in between, in the middle, which is where I always seem to end up.

At six the sun was gone. In Amberlay, it would be dusk.

I didn’t move.

* * *

My father came up at seven. He’d slept. He looked better. He stood behind us on the wall with his hands on the parapet and looked east, the same as we were looking, toward a coast none of us could see.

”Nothing?” he said.

”Nothing.”

”That’s good,” said my father. ”Nothing’s good. If it had gone wrong, Corvin would have sent. Or Agnes Marren would.” He paused. ”Or nobody.”

”I know.”

He was quiet for a while.

”I’m proud of you,” he said. ”For not going. I want you to know that. I know what it costs. I sat by the door in my socks on Tuesday night with my hands clenched, and that was only ten yards.”

I didn’t say anything. I didn’t trust myself to.

* * *

The pigeon came at a quarter past nine.

It came out of the dark from the east, very low and very fast, and landed on the parapet between Carol and me so hard it nearly went over the edge, and Carol caught it with one cold hand. There was a paper on its leg, rolled very small.

I untied it. My hands weren’t steady. Seraphina held the lamp.

It was Odile’s hand. Quick and plain and upright, a courier’s hand, with the date and place at the top. And under that, two words.

It held.

* * *

Corvin told us the rest on Monday, in the little kitchen, at noon, with a Belleren pear in his hand that he kept forgetting to eat, so that the juice ran down his wrist into his cuff and Melody kept handing him napkins.

I’ll put it down the way he told it.

* * *

They’d reached Amberlay at four. Corvin and Aldwin on the Belleren barge, with thirty from Belleren; Velden’s king by road with a hundred and twenty from his town, walking, carrying lanterns; all sixty of Fern Ford in four farm carts, singing. And at a quarter to five, when nobody expected it, a long line of people coming down the coast road from the south: the Marrish towns. Two hundred of them. Nobody had heard from them because they hadn’t stopped to send word. They’d just come.

They didn’t go to the council hall. They went to the harbor, and stood on the wall. Not at the end, where the Kethran ship was moored with its gray courtesy flag. Back from the end. Along the whole length of it, both sides, shoulder to shoulder, with their lanterns unlit.

And then the people of Amberlay came down from the town and stood with them.

”I’d never seen the stone from the harbor,” said Corvin. ”You can, if you stand on the wall and look back up the hill. It’s just a gray mark at the top of the square. But that evening there were so many women in black on the wall that it looked as though the stone had come down to stand with them.”

* * *

At dusk the council came.

All seven. Down the hill from the hall, through the square past the stone, down the harbor steps and out along the wall between the two long lines of people. Agnes Marren at the front, very small and very straight, with her hands folded. Coyle with ink on his fingers. The woman with farmer’s hands. Brandt last, red-faced, with his merchant’s chain.

Nobody said anything as they passed. Corvin said that was the strangest part. Eight hundred people on a harbor wall in the dusk, and not one of them making a sound. Only the sea.

The priests were waiting at the end of the wall. Four of them, in gray, with lamps lit. Behind them, on the deck of the Kethran ship, a line of sailors standing very still. And a brazier on the stones, unlit, with irons laid beside it.

”The irons were for after,” said Corvin. ”I think. For the marks. They’d brought them in case.”

* * *

The eldest priest held out his hand to Agnes Marren.

”Give us your hand,” he said, in our language, very kindly, ”that it may be held.”

Agnes Marren didn’t move.

”No,” she said.

* * *

Corvin said the priest didn’t seem to understand at first. As though the word was in a language he’d once known and had forgotten.

”Give us your yes,” said the priest, a little louder, ”that it may be kept.”

”No,” said Agnes Marren again. ”We said yes to your letter. We were wrong. We’ve come to tell you so to your face, because a yes deserves an answer to its face. The council of Amberlay won’t swear. Not tonight, not ever. Thank you for the gold. We spent it on a school. We’re not giving it back.” She lifted her chin. ”Go home.”

The priest looked past her. Down the length of the harbor wall. At eight hundred people with their lanterns unlit, standing in the dusk, watching.

”Who are these?” he said.

”Witnesses,” said Agnes Marren.

* * *

”Him Who Holds is not refused,” said the priest.

And Brandt stepped forward.

Corvin said nobody expected it. Brandt had voted against. Brandt believed in the fees. Brandt had stood at the back of the council all the way down the hill with his face red and his chain heavy on his chest, and everyone on the wall had seen him and known how he’d voted, because in Amberlay everyone knows everything by suppertime.

He came and stood beside Agnes Marren, in front of the priest, and took off his merchant’s chain, and held it in his fist.

”I voted to swear,” said Brandt. ”I’d have put my hand in yours tonight for the harbor fees and thought it a good bargain. I still think the fees were a good bargain.” He looked at the priest. ”But I’ve just walked down that wall between eight hundred people who came to watch us say no, and not one of them came to watch us say yes. Not one. You’d have had seven of us at the end of a wall in the dark. They brought everybody.” He put the chain back over his head. ”So no. From me as well. Him Who Holds is refused. By Amberlay. Six to one, and the one’s changed his mind. Write that down.”

* * *

And then, Corvin said, the strangest thing.

The people on the wall lit their lanterns.

Not all at once. One at a time, from the far end, near the town. Someone struck a light, and then the person beside them lit theirs from it, and then the next, and the next, down the whole length of the harbor wall, both sides, eight hundred small flames coming on one after another in the dusk, like a fuse burning toward the sea.

Until the priests at the end of the wall, with their four lamps, were standing in front of a road of eight hundred.

”They didn’t look like much, after that,” said Corvin. ”Four lamps.”

* * *

The priests went back aboard. They didn’t say anything else. The eldest one stood at the rail as the ship cast off, and looked back at the harbor wall for a long time, and Corvin said it wasn’t anger on his face. It was something closer to confusion. Like a man who’d been given directions to a house and arrived to find a field.

Then the ship went out of the harbor on the evening tide with its gray courtesy flag, and its brazier still unlit on the stones where they’d left it, and the irons beside it.

”Agnes Marren had the children from the new school carry the irons up to the forge,” said Corvin. ”The smith’s going to make them into hinges for the school door. She says that seems right.”

* * *

My father had been listening to all of it with his hands around his teacup, very still.

”And the grain?” he said.

”Gone,” said Corvin. ”The priest said so, going up the gangplank. Then the grain will not come. Agnes Marren said she knew.” He finally remembered his pear and took a bite of it. ”Belleren’s sending barley. My aunt’s orders. Not as a gift. As a loan, at Belleren’s price, which is not the Cardle price, and Agnes Marren argued about the interest for an hour and got it down by a third.” He chewed. ”She says that’s how you know it’s an honest bargain. When you have to argue about it.”

My father laughed out loud. I hadn’t heard him laugh like that since before Harl.

* * *

Corvin left after supper. Melody walked him down to the gate. She was gone a long time, and when she came back up to the little kitchen her eyes were red and she was smiling, and she sat down next to Mary and put her head on Mary’s shoulder, and Mary put her hand flat on Melody’s cheek and didn’t say anything at all.

At the gate he’d stopped and looked back up at the castle, Melody said. At the east wall, where the lamp in my nook was burning.

”Tell Garrick,” he’d said, ”that the line held. And that it wasn’t Greykeep’s line. And that that’s why it held.”

* * *

From Mary’s book, Sunday and Monday:

Sunday. Aldwin of Tirrowmarch walked to Greykeep. He sold his horse two winters ago for seed. He asked Uriah to his face: Would you lie to me? Uriah said: I don’t know. Aldwin said it was the first honest thing a king’s said to him in twenty years.

Corvin came with pears and a map. He said: Amberlay didn’t ask Belleren not to come. Not behind. Not in front. Beside. The small courts in a row, so the hand can see who’s watching.

Aldwin said: I’ll take the horse.

Corvin told Garrick: Don’t. Garrick didn’t.

Garrick sat on the east wall from four. Seraphina and Carol sat with him. Uriah said: I’m proud of you for not going.

Quarter past nine. Pigeon. Odile. It held.

Monday. Corvin told it in the kitchen. Belleren, Velden, Fern Ford in four carts singing, the Marrish towns that nobody had heard from. Eight hundred on the harbor wall with lanterns unlit.

Agnes Marren said No. Twice. Thank you for the gold. We spent it on a school. Go home.

The priest said: Him Who Holds is not refused. Brandt took off his chain and said: I voted to swear. Not one of them came to watch us say yes. He’s refused. Write that down.

Eight hundred lanterns lit one from another down the wall. Four lamps didn’t look like much after that.

The irons are going to be hinges for the school door.

Belleren is lending barley. Agnes Marren argued the interest down by a third.

Corvin says: The line held. It wasn’t Greykeep’s line. That’s why it held.

And under that, in a careful, slightly stooped, deliberate hand, every letter leaning a little forward, as though carrying something heavy and trying not to drop it:

Corvin of Belleren, at Greykeep, in the little kitchen, with a pear. I’d like it noted that I came early, and it isn’t midwinter. That I stood on a harbor wall in Amberlay last night beside eight hundred people and lit my lantern from a widow’s. That I asked the king of Tirrowmarch if he’d come, and he said he’d take the horse. That twenty years ago someone told me the truth to my face before she told anyone else, and I have been trying ever since to be worth it. And that last night, for about the length of a harbor wall, I think I was.
