The Greykeep Chronicles

It came at two minutes to midnight.

I know the time exactly because I’d just written it. Twelfth hour, near enough. Nothing. I’d got as far as the N when I felt it, and the pen made a long line across Tamar’s watch book where my hand jerked, a line that goes off the edge of the page. It’s still there. Tamar showed me afterward. He’s kept the book. He says he’ll never write in that page again.

It wasn’t a sound. Not at first.

It was the Hold. Westmere Hold hums when something’s wrong; it has done ever since it was built, the way a dog growls before it knows why. It had been humming low all evening, ever since the fires, like a cat with a dog in the yard. And at two minutes to midnight it stopped.

All at once. Like a held breath.

The stove ticked. Benjamin slept against it with his cut hands in his lap. Out on the black water nothing moved. And the whole old gray fortress under my feet went perfectly, utterly silent, the way a room goes silent when someone in it has heard their name called from very far away.

Then the Castellan spoke.

* * *

I heard it in the stone.

I don’t know how else to put it. It came up through the roof of the Hold and the floor of the watch hut and the legs of the stool and into me, into my bones, the way you’d feel a great bell struck somewhere under the earth. It wasn’t words at first. It was just my name, said the way the Castellan says it, flat and gray and patient. But it was said so loud, from so far, that the spyglass rolled off my lap and the stove door rattled and Benjamin woke up with a shout.

GARRICK GREY.

I was already moving. I don’t remember the ladder. I remember the stair of the Hold, the turns of it, going down three and four at a time with one hand on the wall, and the Hold waking all around me, doors banging, Tamar shouting something from below, a woman’s voice, a baby. And under all of it, in the stone, my name again, and again, getting nearer, the way a voice gets nearer as you run toward it down a corridor.

I came into the old storeroom off the lower court and put both my hands flat on the Westmere plate.

It was cold.

Not cool, the way a gate’s metal is cool at night. Cold. Like the cold of the cellar-door frost on Carol’s fingers the night she came down the tower barefoot, the holding frost, the wrong frost. The brass under my palms was so cold it burned.

”Castellan.”

Garrick Grey. The voice came through the gate this time, small and far, like before, a voice down a well. But it was shaking. I have never in my life heard the Castellan’s voice shake. It doesn’t have a voice that can. It’s stone. I promised. I promised to tell you before anyone. I am telling you.

”Tell me.”

A door has opened. One of mine. From the inside.

* * *

I want to set down exactly what it said. I’ve been over it more times than I’ve been over anything in my life, more than the thin letter or Wynn’s face on the quay or the man in the doorway. I’ve written it out for Mary, and for my father, and for the Council, and once for myself, at three in the morning, a long time after, when I couldn’t sleep and needed to see the words on paper to know they’d really been said. This is what it said.

The Greymere and Orselle arch, in the lower hall. It opened at eleven fifty-eight. From this side. Not from the far side. From mine. Someone stood on my floor and put a hand on the plate and opened it.

”Who?”

Someone I know.

”Who?”

The Castellan didn’t answer.

”Castellan. Who opened it?”

I know them. The voice was very quiet now. I know the hand. I know the weight. I have felt it on that plate a thousand times. It fits. It fits like a key in a lock, the way a name fits a person. A pause. But I cannot see the name.

”What do you mean, you can’t—”

It is there. I can feel where it is. It is written where it always is. But there is something written over it. Very small. Very fine. In a hand I know, also. A beautiful hand. The voice shook again. Someone has put a line of oath-script over the name, so I cannot read it. The way you would put your hand over a child’s eyes. A long pause. I did not know that could be done. To me. I did not know anyone had learned to do it.

I stood with my hands on the burning plate.

I let them in, said the Castellan. I told them they would never need asking. I told them they were known. I told them they could come in at any door that was mine.

* * *

”Is anyone hurt?”

Not yet. The pause. The counting. I could feel it counting, through the gate, through all that distance, I could feel it going through every name it had, the way you’d run your hands over a child in the dark to make sure it was whole. Not yet. They are all in the walls. All of them. Uriah Grey is running from the gate. He does not run. He is running. Thor is coming down from the walls. Seraphina is awake. She has the child. She is on the east stair.

”Who’s coming through?”

Strangers.

I’d known it would be. I’d known since the boy on the cutter said until the one who folds came. I’d known since Benjamin said unless somebody told them. I’d known since a man stood in a doorway at Caldermouth so that we’d look at him and not the door. I’d known, and I’d let a stone count my family for me, because I wanted it to be true.

Names I do not know, said the Castellan. Many. Ten. Twenty. More. They are coming through the arch in a line, quickly, the way water comes through a broken dam. They are cold names. Hard names. Some of them have no names at all; there is only a closed hand where a name should be. A pause. And one I know from before. From the chain. From the brand on the old gate in the north. The one who chains.

Kessavel.

My hands went so cold on the plate that I couldn’t feel them.

Kessavel was at Harl. He’d been on the thumb tower since the autumn, holding his chain so the tower wouldn’t fall, with a Kethran collar on his neck that nobody had yet found the way to get off. Brannoc climbed the hundred and six steps every evening with bread and a can of tea and fed him piece by piece, because he was holding something and so somebody had to hold the bread. Aldren had told him, when somebody gets that collar off you, son. Nobody had. And if he was here, it meant somebody had taken hold of that collar and pulled him off his tower by it, the way you’d pull a dog off a step.

And brought him into my house.

And there is singing, said the Castellan. In my halls. In the great hall. On the stairs. I do not know where it comes from. It comes from everywhere. It is the singing from before. The singing that asked for Carol Grey’s name at night. It is asking now. It is asking every door.

* * *

”I’m coming,” I said. ”Open the gate. Open this side. I’m coming through.”

No.

”Castellan—”

No. It said it the way it said it to Severin at the archive door, a long time ago, the only other time I’d ever heard it say no to anyone. Flat. Final. Stone. I am closing them. All of them. Every door that is mine. The quay. Lyradon. Concordia. The southern towns. The Greymere and Orselle arch, if I can, if they will let me. And this one.

”You can’t close this one, I’m on the other side of it—”

That is why.

I stopped.

If I leave a door open for you, Garrick Grey, said the Castellan, I leave it open for them. If you can come through, so can anyone standing beside you. So can anything that has followed you there. There were three ships today that came to bring you to Westmere. I do not know what else came. I do not know what is standing on the dark pier behind you. I cannot see it. I cannot see anything tonight. I could not see the name. The voice cracked. Stone can’t crack. It cracked. I am blind tonight, Garrick Grey. Like your eye. I cannot see who is beside you. So I cannot open the door.

”Then how do I get home?”

The Castellan was quiet.

You fold, it said.

* * *

I took my hands off the plate.

Behind me in the storeroom doorway was Tamar with a lamp, half dressed, his sword in his other hand. Behind him, Benjamin, white to the lips. Behind him, Tamar’s wife with the baby, and Dunmore with his knitted cap pulled down, and two or three of the Hold’s men with torches, all of them crowding the doorway, all of them looking at me.

I don’t know what my face was doing. Tamar’s wife put the baby’s head against her shoulder so it couldn’t see me.

”Greykeep,” I said. ”They’re in Greykeep. Somebody opened the gate from inside. The Castellan’s closing all the gates. All of them. Including this one.” I looked at the plate. Frost was growing across the brass now, flat and smooth and unmelting, the cellar-door frost, the holding frost, creeping in from the edges. As I watched, it reached the middle and covered the last of the Castellan’s narrow gray letters, and the plate was just a white square on a stone frame. ”I have to fold.”

”Fold where?” said Tamar.

”Home.”

There was a silence in the doorway.

Tamar knows what folding is. He’s watched me do it a hundred times. He’s seen me go to Harl and back, and to Kethra, and yesterday up the coast to Caldermouth with Carol and Ignatius. But he knows how I do it, too, because he’s asked. I don’t go far in one stretch. Nobody does. I go in pieces. A fold, and then I stop and stand wherever I’ve come out and feel for the next place, and then another fold. Harl was nine folds and an afternoon. Caldermouth was six, and I’d sat down on the cliff top after the last one with my head between my knees while Carol pretended not to notice.

And at the end of every fold home, all my life, there’s been someone holding the door. The Castellan. I’ve never once thought about it until that night. When I fold home to Greykeep I don’t land in a place; I land in a welcome. The Castellan feels me coming from three folds out, the way it feels a name, and opens itself a little, the way you’d open your arms, and catches me. It’s the easiest fold there is. I could do it asleep. I have done it asleep.

Tonight the Castellan was blind, and every door it had was shut, and it had told me so.

So there’d be no catching. And there was no time for pieces: nine folds was an afternoon, and something was singing on the stairs at home now. It had to be one stretch. The whole way. Half a country, more than three hundred miles, in one fold, into a castle that had closed itself against everything in the world, me included.

Nobody’s ever done that. Not my father. Not Malachar. Not any god anyone’s ever heard of.

”You can’t,” said Benjamin.

”I know.”

”Garrick. You can’t. My mother says—”

”I know what your mother says.” I was already turning. I was already going out past them through the doorway into the lower court, into the cold, under the stars. ”Your mother says I’m not meant to understand it until it’s finished.” I stopped in the middle of the court and looked up. ”Well. I’d better finish it, then.”

* * *

I stood in the lower court of Westmere Hold under the stars and tried to feel home.

You can’t fold to a place you can’t feel. That’s the first thing I ever learned about it, when I was two and folding Mary’s pens into the coal scuttle. You have to know where you’re going, not on a map but in your body, the way you know where your own hand is in the dark. Across a harbor that’s easy. You can see it. Thirty miles to the Lyradon orchard, I’d done it by feeling for the trees, for Queen Mirelle’s first apple tree, which I’ve known all my life; I’d felt for it across the miles like a hand feeling for the edge of a table.

Greykeep was too far to feel. I knew that. I’d tried it before, on the long nights at Westmere when I’d been sent every eighth day to look at the ships, lying awake in the guest room in the Hold. I’d reach for home, and there’d be nothing there. Just distance. Just dark country, all the way.

I reached anyway.

Nothing. Hills. Dark. Rivers. The middle country going on and on, black and cold, and somewhere at the end of it a light I couldn’t see.

Then I felt the door.

Not a gate. Not a fold. The other door. The one that’s always been there, since the first breath, in the same bed on the same night. Carol’s door.

It was open. It’s always open. And on the other side of it, far away north and west on a harbor wall on a cold coast, Carol had felt the Castellan’s bell go through me, the way she feels everything that goes through me, and she was awake, and she was reaching back.

I felt her hand. Not her real hand. Her other one. The one that’s been holding my hand on the other side of the door all my life.

And then, very faint, very far, through her, the way you can see a candle in a window across a valley if somebody else is holding the lamp up for you to see by, I felt Greykeep.

Carol was holding the lamp up.

She couldn’t fold. She’s never been able to; it’s mine, the one thing that’s only mine. But she could feel home. She’s always been able to feel home better than me. She’s the one who comes down the stair barefoot. She’s the one who knows when somebody in the house is crying three floors down. And she was standing on a harbor wall at Caldermouth with forty feet of her own ice in front of her and thirty-one ships behind it, and she’d shut her eyes and turned around and reached all the way back across the whole of the country, east and south, to the north tower, to her round room with eight windows, to the scrubbed table with the burn on it shaped like a duck, to our father, and she was holding it up for me. Like a light in a window.

There, I felt her say. Not in words. There. Go.

* * *

Tamar was beside me. He’d come out into the court. He had his lamp and his sword and his face was very steady, the way his father’s face goes, Edric’s face, when a boat’s overdue and there’s nothing to do but wait.

”What do you need?” he said.

”Nothing.” I looked at him. ”Keep the sailors. Feed them. They didn’t know what they were for.”

”I will.”

”If I don’t come out the other side—”

”You’ll come out,” said Tamar. ”You’re Uriah’s son. He’s never not come out of anything.”

Benjamin was there too. He’d stopped arguing. He’d come up on my right, where I could see him, the way everyone does now. His face had gone very like his mother’s.

”Take something of mine,” he said. ”My mother’s in me. It’s not much. But she knows the way to Greykeep in the dark. She’s walked it a hundred times.” He held out his hand. His cut hand, with the little scabs on it from Selvane’s glass. ”Borrow.”

I looked at his hand.

”Take,” I said, and took it.

It wasn’t much. He was right. A little warmth. A little gold. The feeling of a long road walked barefoot, and the smell of roses, and somewhere at the end of it a dry fountain with water running in it again, and a statue with an open crown.

It was enough. It was a road. Carol was holding the lamp, and Benjamin had given me a road, and I had the fold, the first thing, the thing that’s only mine.

I let go of his hand.

”Tell your mother,” I said.

”I will.”

”Tell Selvane I’m sorry about the lamps.”

”She knows.”

I turned to face east.

* * *

I don’t know what I looked like. Tamar’s wife told me afterward. She’d come to the door of the Hold with the baby. She said I stood in the middle of the lower court with my back straight and both hands out in front of me, palms down, like a man feeling for the edge of a very long table in the dark. She said my left eye, the dark one, was open, and there was something in it she didn’t like to look at, a light, very deep down, the color of a candle seen through ice. She said the frost came up off the cobbles around my feet in a ring and the stars over the court went blurred, as if somebody had breathed on the glass of the sky. She said the Hold started humming again, very loud, all at once, the way it hums when something’s about to happen.

She said I said something. She didn’t hear what.

I know what I said. I said it to the Castellan, though it couldn’t hear me. I said it to my father, running across the inner court for the first time in his life. I said it to Seraphina on the east stair with our son in her arms and the First Flame coming up in her like a forge. I said it to all of them, to the whole of Greykeep, half a country away in the dark with strangers in its halls and something singing on its stairs and a door standing open that should never have been opened, by a hand the Castellan knew.

I said: I’m coming.

And I folded.

From Mary’s book. This page is not dated. Mary says she wrote it on Saturday evening, when she could hold a pen again, and that she wrote it first, before Friday’s page, and then couldn’t bring herself to write anything else on it. It’s in the same very small, very straight hand:

11:58 p.m. The Castellan rang every bell in Greykeep at once. Every one. The chapel. The gate. The kitchen bell. The little bell on Helena’s pantry door that only rings for the bread. The bell on the north tower that nobody has rung since the war. All at once.

I have heard the Castellan ring a bell twice in twenty years. Both times it was one bell.

I am writing the rest on the next page. I can’t write it on this one.

There’s no guest line. There’s no line ruled across the bottom either. The rest of the page is blank. Mary says she left it blank on purpose, so that whoever reads this will turn the page fast.
