The Greykeep Chronicles

The lower hall was on fire, and nothing in it was burning.

That’s the first thing I saw from the bottom of the back stair, and I’ve never found a better way to say it. The long vault under the great hall was full of fire from the floor to the curve of the roof, red and gold and white, rolling along the old stone like water poured out of a jug onto a tilted table. It lit every block. It lit the pale patches on the floor where the five arches had stood before they went down to the quay. It lit the high lamps at each end, which were out, and the frost on the plates of the last two arches, and the iron rings in the walls where they used to tie the boats when this was a cistern, a thousand years ago, before the castle.

And none of it caught. The ledger stands were gone, and the old tarred ropes coiled by the cistern steps didn’t smoke. The air was hot enough to make my eyes water, and my sleeve, when I put it up over my face, didn’t even scorch.

That’s how you know it’s her. Any fool can set a room on fire. Seraphina sets a room on fire and decides, flame by flame, what’s allowed to burn.

She was standing in the middle of it.

* * *

I want to put her down properly, the way she looked, because I’ve only seen her like that twice in my life, and the first time was the night our son was born.

She was barefoot on the stone in her nightgown, with my old green coat over it, the one she steals, the sleeves pushed up past her elbows. Her hair was loose, and it wasn’t red anymore; it was the color of the middle of a fire, the color that isn’t any color, and it moved around her head as if she were standing under water. Her arms were out a little from her sides, palms down, the way my father stands when he’s freezing something, the way I’d stood in the lower court at Westmere. The Flame came up out of her. Not out of her hands. Out of all of her, out of her skin, out of the stone under her feet, the way heat comes up off a road in summer, so that she was the still center of it and everything around her shook.

She was looking at the arch.

The last two arches stood at the far end of the hall. Greymere and Orselle, the shared one, with its brass plate split down the middle, Greymere’s half and Orselle’s half. And beyond it, smaller, against the end wall, Westmere.

The Westmere plate was white with the holding frost, the cellar-door frost, the way I’d seen it go white under my hands three hundred miles away. The Castellan had shut it.

The Greymere and Orselle arch was open.

* * *

You don’t see a gate open, usually. You see through it. You see the other place, a little blurred, a little shining, as if through a window with rain on it. Through the Greymere and Orselle arch, if it were open on the Orselle side, you’d see the white gate square at the top of the town, and the fountain, and the lamp-seller’s stall in the corner, and the red roofs going down the hill toward the harbor.

That’s what I saw. Orselle. At night. The white stones of the square under torches, and the fountain, and figures moving, black-coated, a lot of them.

But you couldn’t see it clearly. Because there was something in the way.

A chain.

It came out of the arch at the level of my waist, out of the blurred white square of Orselle, and ran taut across the floor of the lower hall like a ship’s cable, link after link of dark iron, each link as long as my hand. It ran straight through the middle of the arch, through the gate itself, through the fold, the way you’d wedge a door with a bar so it can’t swing shut. You could feel the gate trying to close on it. You could feel the whole arch straining, the Castellan straining, the fold pressing in from both sides on that one line of iron like a jaw trying to bite through a bone.

And the other end of the chain, this end, our end, went to a collar.

The collar was on Kessavel.

* * *

He was on his knees on the stone between Seraphina and the arch.

I’d seen him last in the autumn, on the thumb tower at Harl, holding his chain so the tower wouldn’t fall. He’d looked bad then. He looked worse now. He was a tall man, or had been made in the shape of one, gray all over, gray skin and gray hair and gray eyes, the gray of ash, or old snow, or nothing much at all. Brannoc had been feeding him bread every night for weeks and he was thinner than when Brannoc started. His hands were raw. His feet were bare and bleeding from the stone; they’d walked him a long way.

The collar was iron, black, thick as my wrist, with a closed hand stamped on the front of it in dark gold. And from the back of the collar, where the great chain was fixed, something else ran out. Thinner than a hair. Gray. You could barely see it in all that firelight. It ran along the top of the iron chain, back through the arch, through Orselle, and on, east and west and nowhere, into a distance I couldn’t follow with my eyes.

I’d seen that thread before. Everyone at Harl had. It ran out of Kessavel’s throat when he spoke about the whole one, and his voice went flat and cold on just those two words, as if someone else were saying them through him.

That was the pulling. That was what Caitlin couldn’t count. There was nobody at the end of that thread for her to count. There was only something, very far away, pulling.

* * *

Kessavel was making chains.

He was doing it the way you’d do something in a dream, slowly, against your will, with your eyes open. His raw gray hands moved in front of him, and out of his hands came chains: not iron, not anything you could touch, gray and fine and flowing, like smoke poured into the shape of links. They came off his fingers in long loops and coiled out across the floor toward Seraphina.

Not toward her. That’s what I have to make plain, because people get it wrong when they tell it. Not toward her. Kessavel’s chains, the old ones, the ones he put on gods and gates, don’t go on your body. They go on what you are. On your name. On your power. On the thing that makes you yourself. He’d put them on the gates in the north and the gates had forgotten how to close. He’d put them on the gods in the Stillyard and they’d sat on shelves for a thousand years.

They were going for the Flame.

And they were getting it.

I saw it. I stood at the bottom of the back stair and saw the gray smoke-chains reach the edge of her fire and go into it, and the fire shrank where they went in, the way a candle shrinks when you put a glass over it. Loop after loop, wrapping, tightening. The great roaring gold that filled the hall drew back toward her from the walls, from the roof, and wherever it drew back, the old stone went dark again behind it. The ropes. The iron rings. The pale patches on the floor. Dark.

She was standing perfectly straight, perfectly still, with her arms out and her face set. She wasn’t moving. She wasn’t held. But her fire was.

And the chain through the arch was being drawn in, link by link, across the stone, toward Orselle. Slowly. Like an anchor. Pulling Kessavel along with it on his knees, inch by inch. Pulling the chains on the Flame with him. Pulling the Flame.

Not her. I want that clear in this book in ink. They couldn’t take her. Nobody has ever been able to take Seraphina anywhere she didn’t choose to go. But they could take what was in her. They could pull the fire out of her through that gate like a thread out of a needle, and carry it away west across the sea on the end of a chain, and leave her standing in the lower hall of Greykeep, barefoot, in my old green coat, with nothing in her at all.

That was what they’d come for. Not her. Not even the boy, in the end, though they’d have taken his little flame too, if they could have collared him. The First Flame. All of it.

* * *

”Seraphina.”

She didn’t turn. She couldn’t; she was holding too hard. But she heard me. I saw her hear me. Her shoulders changed.

”You came home,” she said. Through her teeth. Not looking away from the arch. ”You’re bleeding. Out of your ears.”

”I folded from Westmere.”

”That’s three hundred miles.”

”Three hundred and something. I’ll have Davren measure it.”

”You absolute idiot,” said Seraphina. Her voice shook. ”Where’s my son?”

”In the kettle cupboard. With a hen on his head. Fenrir’s lying across the door with a spear wound in his shoulder and he won’t move off it even to be looked at. Grandpa hit a man with his mallet. Helena held a kettle.”

Something happened to her face, very briefly. Then it set again.

”Good,” she said. ”Then I can stop thinking about it.” Another loop of gray came off Kessavel’s hands and went into the fire, and she made a sound, very small, through her nose, the sound she makes when she’s burned her fingers on the stove. ”Garrick, I can’t burn it. I’ve been trying since midnight. It’s not iron, the part on the Flame; it’s him. It’s what he is. I could burn him. I could burn him right off the floor, and the chains would go with him.” She was shaking now, all over, very finely, the way a rope shakes when it’s taking too much weight. ”He doesn’t want to be doing this. Look at his face. Look at him.”

I looked at him.

Kessavel was crying. His gray face was wet. His raw hands moved in front of him, making the chains, making them, and his eyes were open and fixed on Seraphina, and the tears ran down his face and dripped off his jaw onto the black iron of the collar, and his mouth was moving.

I couldn’t hear him over the roar of the fire. But I’ve had a lot of practice since the autumn at reading the mouths of people who can’t make themselves heard. I read his.

I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.

”I won’t burn him,” said Seraphina. ”I won’t. He held the tower so it wouldn’t fall on the people underneath it. He held the first line still so it wouldn’t hurt. Your father said that was a thing to remember.” Her voice cracked. ”I’m remembering it.”

* * *

I looked at the chain.

Not the gray chains. The iron one. The one that ran from the back of Kessavel’s collar across the floor and through the arch like a bar wedging a door.

That was iron. Real iron. Kethran iron, black, the kind Bodvar’s dwarves had looked at at Harl and spat on, cold-forged, brittle. And the thread that ran along the top of it, the gray hair-thin thread to the pulling, ran from the collar along the chain. Along it. Not through Kessavel’s hands. Along the iron.

Cut the iron, and the thread lost its road.

And I knew how you break cold iron. Every child in a forge town knows. Every apprentice in Bodvar’s yard. You heat it till it’s red, and then you plunge it in snow. It doesn’t bend. It doesn’t melt. It cracks, the whole length of it, like ice on a pond when you stamp.

My left hand was dead. White to the wrist, numb, useless since the cabbages.

My father’s frost lives in my left hand.

* * *

”Seraphina,” I said. ”Borrow?”

She heard it. She heard what I meant before I’d finished saying it, the way she always does. It’s the oldest word between us, the one I say when I hold out my hand for a little of someone’s gift. But I wasn’t asking for her fire this time. I was asking her to trust me with where it went.

”Take,” said Seraphina.

I walked into the fire.

It didn’t burn me. It knew me. It wrapped around me the way her arms do, hot and close and furious, and I walked through it to the chain, to the middle of the iron cable where it lay taut across the floor between Kessavel and the arch, and I knelt down on the stone and put my dead white left hand on it.

And I let my father’s frost go.

* * *

I hadn’t been able to use it since the cabbages. I couldn’t feel the hand. But the frost doesn’t need me to feel it; it’s my father’s, and it’s been in that hand since before I could walk, and it went out of me and into the iron like water out of a broken jar.

The chain went white under my palm. The frost ran along it in both directions, link to link to link, fast, toward the collar one way and toward the arch the other, the holding frost, the deep cold, the cold my father had used to freeze the western sea with one hand, and every link it touched went white and dull and creaked.

”Now,” I said.

Seraphina let go.

Not of the Flame. Of the holding back. Of everything she’d been doing since midnight to keep from burning what she didn’t want to burn. She took all the fire that the gray chains hadn’t got, everything that was left, everything that was hers, and she put it into the one place I’d made for it: the frozen iron under my hand.

The chain went red. Then white again, a different white. Then a sound.

I’ve heard it twice since then and never want to hear it again. It’s not a crack. It’s a scream. Cold iron made red-hot in a heartbeat by the First Flame, on top of my father’s frost, the deepest cold there is, screamed, the whole length of it, from Kessavel’s collar to the Orselle side of the arch, one long rising shriek like a gull the size of the world.

And then it broke.

Not in one place. Everywhere. Every link. It burst along its whole length into a thousand pieces of black iron no bigger than a fingernail, and they went out in a ring across the floor of the lower hall, skittering and smoking and ringing on the stone like hail on a roof.

* * *

The thread went with it.

I saw it go. The hair-thin gray thread that had run along the top of the chain, from the back of Kessavel’s collar, through the arch, to the pulling. When the iron went, the thread had nothing to lie on. It hung in the air for a moment, gray and taut, between the collar and Orselle and the far nowhere beyond, with nothing to hold it up.

And it snapped. Like a hair. Tink.

Kessavel fell forward on his hands on the stone.

The gray chains went out of his fingers. All of them, at once. They came loose off the Flame like a knot when you pull the right end, and they unwound out of the fire and fell to the floor and lay there for a moment, gray coils of nothing, and then went to smoke, and the smoke went to nothing.

And the Flame came back.

It came back into the lower hall like the tide coming in over a beach. Red and gold and white. Up the walls. Over the roof. Into every dark place the gray had left. It found the old ropes and the iron rings and the pale patches on the floor and lit them, and didn’t burn them, and Seraphina stood in the middle of it with her hair moving like water and her arms out and her face turned up, and she breathed in, all the way in, the way you breathe after you’ve been under the sea too long.

The arch began to close.

Without the chain wedging it, the gate swung shut the way a door swings shut in a draft. Slowly at first. I could feel the Castellan behind it, pushing, with everything it had. The blurred white square of Orselle on the other side began to narrow, the edges drawing in, like an eye closing.

* * *

Kessavel was on his hands and knees on the stone, among the black fragments of the chain. The collar was still on him. The great chain was gone from the back of it, and the thread with it, but the collar itself was still there, black, thick as my wrist, the closed hand on the front. You can’t break everything in one night.

He lifted his head.

He wasn’t looking at the arch. He wasn’t looking at the fire. He was looking at Seraphina.

”Thank you,” he said. Quite clearly. In a voice I’d never heard him use, his own voice, not flat, not cold, a tired gray voice like a man’s who has walked a very long way. ”Thank you for not burning me.”

”You held the tower,” said Seraphina.

”I held the tower,” said Kessavel. He looked at his raw hands. ”They came for me at dusk. Not the priests. The pulling. It took hold of the collar and walked me off the thumb like a dog on a lead. Brannoc was on the stair with the bread.” His face twisted. ”He tried to stop them. He’s an old man. He sat down on the step and they went past him.”

”Is he hurt?”

”I don’t know. I couldn’t look back.” He swallowed. ”I’ve never once been able to look back.”

Loki was in the hall.

I don’t know when he’d come. He came the way he comes, out of the edge of things. He was beside Kessavel on the stone, on one knee, in his long green coat with ash on the shoulders, and he put his hand on Kessavel’s gray head the way he’d put it on Fenrir’s in the snow, and left it there.

”Brannoc’s all right,” said Loki. ”I went and looked, on my way. He’s sitting on the stair at Harl with the bread in his lap, swearing. I told him you’d be back for supper.”

Kessavel put his face down on the stone and shook.

* * *

The arch was half shut.

Seraphina had turned to watch it. The fire was drawing back into her now, slowly, the way a tide goes out, leaving the old stone of the lower hall dark and cool and smelling of smoke that hadn’t come from anything. I stood up off my knees. My left hand was still white. It felt, for the first time since the cabbages, like it belonged to me.

Through the closing arch, Orselle.

The white gate square under the torches. The fountain. Men in black, a lot of them, standing back from the arch now, in a ragged half circle, staring at the place where their chain had come back to them as a thousand hot black fingernails on the white stones. Some of them had scattered. Some of them were shouting.

And in the middle of the square, by the fountain, something I hadn’t seen before, because the chain had been in the way.

A closed carriage. Black, with a closed hand on the door in dark gold. Four black horses, stamping. And at the carriage door, held by the arms by two men with no faces, three people.

A woman. Small. Gray-haired. In a fisherman’s knitted shawl. With her right wrist bound up in a sling.

And two girls. One about eleven, standing very straight, holding the woman’s good hand. One about eight, with her face pressed into the woman’s skirt.

Kessavel lifted his head off the stone and looked where Seraphina was looking.

”Those are the ones,” he said. Very quietly. ”That they used to open the door. They have a son. He’s somewhere in this castle. Or he was.” He closed his eyes. ”They’re going to take them west now. Across the sea. Since the door didn’t work. They don’t need them anymore, but they’ll keep them. They always keep them. In case.”

The arch was a third open. Closing.

I looked at the woman in the sling. I looked at the older girl, standing so straight, holding her mother’s hand. The younger one with her face in the skirt. I thought of a thin letter, one sheet, one side, in a curly hand. I thought of Faelan’s ledger. CLEMMIE (11) (CLEVER). GOLDIE (8) (DOG FIRST).

I didn’t understand. Not yet. Not all of it. I want that written down honestly. I stood in the lower hall with the black iron smoking around my feet and the arch closing and I looked at a woman with her right wrist in a sling, and I didn’t put it together.

Seraphina did.

She always does. She’s faster than me. She always has been.

She turned around and looked at me.

The Flame was in her eyes, small and bright and steady, the way it goes when she’s made up her mind about something and there’s no point at all in arguing. I’ve seen it a hundred times. I saw it the night she decided to marry me. I saw it the night our son was born.

And I knew, before she said a word, what she was going to do.

* * *

From Mary’s book. Saturday. The hand is very small again, smaller than on any other page, and the lines are close together, as if Mary were trying to fit a great deal into very little room:

The lower hall. Seraphina held the Greymere and Orselle arch from midnight. Kessavel was walked through it on a collar, on a chain, with a thread on the chain to the far nowhere. They made him put his chains on her Flame. Not on her. On her Flame. To draw it out of her through the gate and take it west.

She would not burn him. He held the tower.

Garrick put Uriah’s frost into the chain with his dead hand. Seraphina put her fire into the frost. The chain broke into a thousand pieces. The thread snapped. Kessavel’s chains came off the Flame.

Kessavel thanked her for not burning him. Loki says Brannoc is all right, on the stair at Harl, swearing.

Through the arch, in Orselle, by the fountain: a carriage. A woman with her right wrist in a sling. Two girls, about eleven and about eight.

The arch was closing.

And in the margin beside the last line, in a hand that isn’t Mary’s, narrow and gray and very upright, the letters exactly the same height, the way they come up on a slate:

Kessavel. Unleashed. Not yet unbound.
