The Greykeep Chronicles

I took Kessavel his breakfast at six.

Bread and cheese and a can of tea, from the baskets Green had brought out the night before. I climbed the thumb tower by a stair that went up inside the stone in a long tight spiral, and I counted it, because everybody counts stairs now. A hundred and six. At the top, there was a little round room with no door, and a ladder, and a hatch, and then the parapet, and the sea all around, white with my father’s ice as far as I could see.

Kessavel was sitting where he’d sat all night. His back against the stone. His knees drawn up. Both hands at his throat, around the thin gray thread that went away east toward the sunrise. He didn’t look up when I came through the hatch.

”You don’t have to talk,” I said. ”I brought bread.”

”I can’t take it,” said Kessavel. ”My hands are busy.”

”I know.” I tore off a piece and held it out. ”Open.”

* * *

He looked at the bread for a long time. Then at me.

Then he opened his mouth, like a child, and I put the bread in it, and he ate it. And then another piece, and the cheese, and I held the can of tea for him and tipped it while he drank. He didn’t say anything the whole time. Neither did I.

When it was gone, he leaned his head back against the stone and closed his eyes.

”Nobody has ever fed me,” he said. ”In my whole life.”

”You’ve got two hands full,” I said. ”Somebody has to.”

* * *

”You said to ask Draum,” I said, after a while. ”What this rock was built on top of.”

”I said ask him,” said Kessavel, without opening his eyes. ”But you won’t get a straight answer out of Draum. You never could. He’s a tide. Tides don’t go straight.” He was quiet for a moment. ”I’ll tell you. I built it. I should be the one.”

* * *

He told me the way he’d told Iselle about his collar. In a flat, tired voice, like somebody reading out a list.

”Every god keeps their heart somewhere,” said Kessavel. ”Not in their chest. Somewhere in the world. A tree. A well. A forge. The first place they ever were themselves. Your father’s is a valley full of glass, I think. Mine is a keyhole in a door in Kethra that was knocked down before your great-grandmother was born.”

I didn’t say anything. I was thinking about the glass valley.

”Draum’s is here,” said Kessavel. ”Under this rock. This is where his first tide turned. Ten thousand years ago, or twenty, before there were people to count. The sea came in, and it came to this rock, and for the first time it stopped, and went back out. And that was Draum. That was the first moment he was anything at all.” He opened his eyes and looked down at the black stone of the palm far below us. ”His heart is a stone. Under the brazier. You could put your hand on it.”

* * *

”And the fist,” I said slowly.

”Is closed around it,” said Kessavel. ”Yes.”

I looked down at the shape of the fortress. The four fingers curled over the palm. The thumb, where we sat, bent across them. A closed fist, a mile across, built into the black rock of Harl.

Closed around a heart.

”He had me build it the month after your father froze the wave,” said Kessavel. ”After the Lockwarden’s little key locked Draum in the deep behind a kind door. The Lockwarden’s door. No hand can reach Draum’s chain now. Not Malachar’s. Not—” He stopped. His hands tightened at his throat. ”Not his. So he can’t pull Draum out. And Draum can’t come out on his own. A kind door only opens one way. You knock, from the inside. And somebody on the outside answers.”

”And then?”

”And then you’re let out,” said Kessavel. ”That’s what a kind door is. It isn’t a cell. It’s a door you have to ask at.”

* * *

The ice creaked, far below. Somebody shouted, down in the palm. I heard Sigrun’s voice, reading a name.

”So he built a fist around Draum’s heart,” I said. ”To answer the door for him.”

”With voices,” said Kessavel. ”You can’t answer a door without a voice. And he doesn’t have one in this world. Not here. Not his own.” He looked at me. ”But every Hushed has said I give my voice to the hand. Every single one. Three hundred and eleven voices, given to the hand. And seventeen more to come, at the dark of the moon, from your singing fishermen. And mine.” He swallowed. ”Tonight, when the tide goes out further than it’s gone all year, Draum will knock. And the hand will close around his heart. And three hundred and twenty-nine voices will say, all together, in his own heartbeat, come out.”

”And he’ll come out.”

”And he’ll come out,” said Kessavel. ”Belonging to the hand. And he’ll stand the sea up the way he did three hundred years ago over the Hearth Isles. And there will be no Westmere. And no Sallow Point. And no ice.”

* * *

I sat there for a long time.

”How long has he been knocking?” I said.

”A month,” said Kessavel. ”Since the fist was finished. Every night. Louder every night. He knows when the dark of the moon is. He’s a tide. He’s always known.” He closed his eyes again. ”Ask him why, Garrick Grey. That’s the part I can’t tell you. I don’t know if he’s knocking because he wants out. Or because he knows what’s waiting on the other side of the door.”

* * *

I went down a hundred and six steps and found my father at the wall.

He was standing where he’d stood all the day before, with frost to his elbows and his face calm, letting the ice down a few feet at a time for Corran Hale and Marra and the wolves. He hadn’t slept. I don’t think he’d sat down. Evelyn had come out on Calder at first light and stood beside him with her arms folded, and he still hadn’t sat down.

I told him everything Kessavel had said.

He listened without turning his head. When I got to the part about the voices, his jaw went tight.

”Two hundred and fourteen,” he said.

”Two hundred and fourteen still sworn,” I said. ”Plus Kessavel. Plus the seventeen, if they’d sworn, but they didn’t.”

”Because they sang.” My father let out a long breath. ”So every one we name today is a voice he doesn’t have tonight.”

”Yes.”

”How many does he need?”

”Kessavel doesn’t know,” I said. ”Maybe all of them. Maybe one.”

My father looked along the wall. At the long line of gray faces, still and patient, hands flat on the ice.

”Then we’d better get on,” he said.

* * *

But first I wanted to see the heart.

Brother Ostrand showed us. That surprised me. He was sitting where he’d sat all night, on the step of the brazier, with a blanket around him that Helena had sent and a bowl of soup he hadn’t touched. Brannoc was still standing in front of him. I don’t think Brannoc had moved either.

When I asked, in my bad Kethran, the old man looked up at me for a long time. Then he got up, slowly, with one hand on Brannoc’s arm, which Brannoc allowed, and shuffled to the back of the brazier and pointed down.

There was a grate in the floor. Iron. Very old. I’d taken it for a drain.

”Below,” said Brother Ostrand. His voice was thin and cracked, and very careful, as if he were walking across a floor in the dark and wasn’t sure where the boards were anymore. Iselle had taken his words of command. The rest of his words were still there. He just didn’t trust them. ”The priests go down at the dark of the moon. I have never gone. I am afraid of it.” He looked at me. ”It beats.”

* * *

My father lifted the grate off with one hand.

Under it, a shaft went straight down into the black rock, with iron rungs set into the side. It was warm. Warm air came up out of it, damp and salt, and smelled of the bottom of the sea.

I went first. My father came behind me. We didn’t bring a lamp. We didn’t need one. About fifty rungs down, there was light below us, faint and green, the color of the sea when you open your eyes under the water on a sunny day.

And then the shaft opened into a cave, and we were standing on the floor of it, and in the middle of it was the heart.

* * *

It was a stone.

That’s all. A black stone, about the size of a hay cart, smooth and wet, rounded like a pebble on a beach that’s been turned over by the sea for ten thousand years. The green light came out of it from somewhere inside, the way light comes through the side of a wave.

Around it, there were bands of iron. Four of them, curved, going up over the stone from the floor on one side. And one thick one, coming down over the top from the other side and lying across the four.

Four fingers and a thumb. A hand. Closed.

And as I stood there, the stone beat.

* * *

I felt it in my feet first. Then in my chest. One slow, deep, enormous pulse, like a great wave going over a long way down. The green light swelled and faded. The iron bands creaked. Water ran down the walls.

Then nothing. For a long time. I counted. Sixty. Seventy. Eighty.

Then another.

”Once a minute,” said my father quietly. ”Like a tide coming in and going out, very fast.”

I went forward and knelt down beside the stone and put my left ear against it.

* * *

My left ear was nearly all the way back by then. I’d lost it borrowing from Loki to fold the fleet. Evelyn said it would come back in a month, and it had, nearly. And I’d spent that month learning how to listen with it, with Siriel, on the deck of the Knock. Learning to hear what was behind things.

So I listened.

Behind the stone. Under it. A long way down. Further down than the bottom of the sea. In a place that wasn’t really a place.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

* * *

”Who’s there?” I said.

I said it into the stone. I don’t know why. It’s what you say. It’s what Helena taught us to say, when we were small, if somebody knocked at the kitchen door after dark.

The knocking stopped.

And then a voice came up through the stone, through my ear, through the bones of my head. It was the biggest voice I’ve ever heard. It was the sound of the sea dragging back over shingle, ten miles of it, all at once. And it was laughing.

Little door-boy, said Draum.

* * *

I know your voice, said the god of the drowned islands. You were on the pier. With the ice-man. You went to the ships and opened the storms’ bottles and let them all go home. And then a little old key turned, and I went down, and down, and a door closed over me. Kindly. The laugh again, like a wave going out. Kindly. I have been in the dark for a long time, door-boy. Do you know what I’ve been doing?

”Knocking,” I said.

Knocking, said Draum. Every night. Louder every night. And tonight, someone will answer.

”Why do you want out?”

Why? The voice was astonished. Because I’m the sea. Because the sea doesn’t stay where it’s put. Because I was here before your gods were anything at all, and they locked me in a room. Because there’s a little town on a harbor with a stone pier and a man on it made of ice, and I’ve been thinking about it in the dark.

* * *

Behind me, my father hadn’t moved. But I felt the cold come off him, all at once, the way you feel a door open somewhere in a house in winter.

”I held you all night once,” he said.

You did, said Draum. He sounded almost pleased. I remember. I pushed, and you held, and you didn’t break, and I didn’t break, and the sun came up. It was the most interesting night I’ve had in three hundred years. A long, slow beat of the heart. The green light swelled. But tonight I won’t come up against your ice, ice-man. Tonight I come up underneath it. Through my own heart. With three hundred voices to open the door for me.

”Two hundred and fourteen,” I said.

There was a pause.

What?

”Two hundred and fourteen,” I said. ”There were three hundred and eleven. We’ve been naming them. Since yesterday morning. Every one we name gives their voice back. So tonight you won’t have three hundred. You’ll have whatever’s left.”

* * *

I don’t know what I expected. Anger. A wave. The stone to crack under my ear.

Draum laughed.

It went on and on, the sea dragging back over shingle, and the heart beat twice in quick succession, which it hadn’t done before, and water came pouring down the walls of the cave.

Then name them, door-boy, said Draum. Name every one. Name them all by midnight. The laugh went out like a tide. I only need one.

* * *

”He might be lying,” said my father, on the way back up the rungs.

”He might,” I said.

”He’s a tide,” said my father. ”Tides don’t go straight.” He was quiet for twenty rungs. Then: ”But I don’t think he’s lying.”

”Neither do I.”

We came up out of the grate into the gray daylight of the palm. It was nine o’clock in the morning. Fifteen hours to midnight.

My father looked along the wall at the two hundred and fourteen.

”All of them,” he said.

* * *

We named them all day.

Everybody. Not just Corran and Marra and the wolves now. Everybody who could stand at a gap in the ice and look into a gray face and ask. The Kethran sailors from the red ships went along the line asking every face if they’d ever been to Tessing, or Corth, or the bee villages on the Coln. Lisbet Fane signed in mill-talk with both hands until her fingers cramped and Ada took over. Siriel’s elves walked the wall barefoot, singing, very low, the old elvish songs that are only names, one after another, hundreds of them, in case one of them caught. The ninety-seven who’d been named the day before got up from their blankets in the lee of the thumb and came and stood at the wall and looked for faces they’d stood beside in the golden city.

Annick Dole found two. Both from Brennet. She knew them by their hands.

Davy Harker and the sixteen other fishermen from Sallow Point sat on the black stones of the palm in a row, with their bruised faces and blacked eyes, and sang. Not Haul Away for Sallow. Every song they knew. Every hauling song and drinking song and lullaby from every port on the coast. And sometimes, when they got to the second verse of something, a gray face at the wall would turn, just slightly, toward the sound.

And Sigrun would run.

* * *

Out on the Knock, a mile away, Caitlin counted.

I could hear her through Carol, through the middle, all day. Just the numbers. Just the lines in the net going, one at a time, each time a padlock broke.

Two hundred and ten.

Two hundred and two.

One hundred and eighty-one.

By noon, it was a hundred and forty.

By the middle of the afternoon, it was ninety.

The tide was going out. You could see it, even under the ice. The ice was settling. Cracking. Long white seams opening in it, a hundred yards out from the gate, with a sound like whips cracking, as the sea under it drew back and back and back. Further than any tide I’d ever seen. Kell Dunnet stood on the wall and watched it with his arms folded and said nothing at all, and Iselle, translating for him, said that was the worst thing Kell Dunnet had ever said.

* * *

By sunset, it was fifty-eight.

Fifty-eight people still standing at my father’s wall, hands flat on the ice, with their faces blank and their voices still given to the hand. We’d tried every name in Sigrun’s ledger. Every song. Every smell. Every village. The wolves had been along the line nine times. Marra had looked into every face until she’d started crying and couldn’t stop.

Fifty-eight. And Kessavel.

And Draum only needed one.

* * *

I went and sat on the brazier step beside Brother Ostrand, because it was the only place to sit, and put my head in my hands.

After a while the old man said, in his careful, cracked Kethran, ”The key.”

I looked up.

”In your coat,” said Brother Ostrand. ”The old one. I felt it when you walked past. Everyone in the golden city would feel it. That is the Lockwarden’s key.” He looked at me with his pale old eyes. ”It is the key to the kind door. The one that holds him. A kind door has a key, boy. Even if it only opens one way.”

* * *

I took it out of my pocket.

I’d been carrying it since the white ship. Since the day Kessavel came. A very small plain iron key, black with age, old as the first door in Kethra. The Lockwarden had turned it in the ice of my father’s wave the night Draum went down. Then he’d laid it on the bollard at the end of the north pier, and nobody had touched it after that until I picked it up.

There was an open hand on the bow of it. And a word, worn almost smooth, that I’d taken to Eleanor and Davren and Cassia, and they’d read for me. Knock. And around the ring of it, very small, the harbor-right that we’d built into every ward-ship since.

Any who come and ask.

* * *

”Brother Ostrand,” I said. ”If somebody knocks at a kind door. And two people answer. At the same time. Which one opens it?”

The old man thought about it for a long time.

”The one who holds the key,” he said.

* * *

My father was at the wall. I went and told him.

He listened. Then he looked at the key in my open hand for a long time.

”If you answer,” he said slowly, ”you open it.”

”If I answer, it opens on my side,” I said. ”Not the hand’s. Not his. Mine. With this.” I closed my fingers around the key. ”Any who come and ask. That’s the ward on it. That’s the harbor-right. Anybody can come into Westmere harbor, any ship, any flag. If they ask. But if they ask, they’re guests. And a guest doesn’t burn the house he asked to come into.”

”And if he won’t ask?”

”Then he stays behind the door,” I said. ”And the hand doesn’t get him either. Because I’ve already answered.”

My father looked at me for a long moment.

”He’s proud,” he said. ”He’s the proudest thing I’ve ever met. He won’t ask.”

”I know,” I said. ”So I don’t think he’ll stay behind the door, either. I think he’ll try to come through anyway. With fifty-eight voices pulling. And I think he’ll come up through his own heart, into the palm, angry, at midnight.”

”And then?”

I looked up at the sky. It was going dark. The darkest night of the month. No moon at all.

”Then I’d like some light,” I said.

* * *

Carol sent for them.

She did it through the middle, to Seraphina, at home at Greykeep with our son asleep upstairs. My wife didn’t wait to be told twice. She folded herself, in her nightgown, with a lamp, straight to the mouth of the aerie cave above Greymere, and knocked on the rock. And Serevan, who was sitting on a ledge outside the cave with his head under his wing, took his head out and listened, and then flew straight up into the dark with a sound like a fire catching.

He told Ashenne. Ashenne told the rest.

I didn’t hear any of that until afterward. All I knew, standing on the black stone of the palm at eleven o’clock, was that far to the west, out over the open sea, past the place where Draum had sunk the twelve Hearth Isles three hundred years ago with every nest on them, a line of small red lights had appeared on the horizon. Like a necklace of coals.

Coming.

* * *

At half past eleven, the heart started beating faster.

You could feel it everywhere. Through the stone of the palm. Through the soles of your boots. Once every half a minute. Then every twenty seconds. The iron grate behind the brazier rattled in its frame. Green light came up through it, brighter and brighter, until the whole palm was lit like the bottom of the sea.

And out beyond the gate, the sea went away.

All of it. The ice came down with a roar like a building falling, a mile of it, cracking and tilting and sliding as the water went out from under it. The twelve blue ships, frozen in at their moorings, keeled slowly over onto their sides on the bare sea floor. And past them, past the shoals, past where our own ships had been warned off at dusk and pulled back two miles, there was nothing but wet black rock and weed and stranded fish, glittering in the green light, as far as you could see.

The lowest tide of the year. At the dark of the moon.

And from far below, under the palm, under the rock, under the heart:

KNOCK.

* * *

The fifty-eight at my father’s wall all turned their heads at once.

Toward the grate. Toward the green light. Their mouths opened. All together. I knew what they were going to say. Kessavel had told me that morning. Three words, in the heartbeat of a god.

On the thumb tower, I heard Kessavel make a sound, a terrible sound, like somebody holding a rope that was being pulled through his hands.

KNOCK.

I went down the grate.

* * *

I don’t remember the rungs. I remember the cave, and the green light so bright now that I had to narrow my good eye against it, and the heart beating so hard the iron fingers around it were singing like plucked wire. And the sound coming up from under it, from the deep, from the place that wasn’t a place.

KNOCK.

I knelt down by the heart. I took out the Lockwarden’s key. I held it in my open right hand, the way I’ve held out my hand my whole life, and laid my hand flat on the stone.

Up above, very faintly, through fifty rungs of rock, I heard fifty-eight voices begin to say, together, Come—

”Who’s there?” I said.

* * *

The voices above stopped.

Everything stopped. The knocking. The heartbeat. The singing of the iron. The sea, a mile out, halfway through drawing breath.

I’d answered first.

And from below, very close now, close enough that I felt it in my teeth, Draum said, in a voice like the whole sea holding still:

Door-boy.

”That’s me,” I said. ”And this is my door now. If you want to come out, you can. Any who come and ask.” I closed my fingers around the key. ”So ask.”

* * *

For a long moment there was nothing at all.

And then, from the deep, from under his own heart, the god of the drowned islands began to laugh, and the laugh became a roar, and the roar became the sea.

I have never asked for anything, said Draum. In my whole life.

”I know,” I said. ”That’s why you’re behind the door.”

KNOCK, said Draum, so hard the cave cracked from floor to ceiling.

And above me, out over the bare black sea floor, I heard the sea begin to stand up.

* * *

Mary’s book. Saturday night. Mary sent it out on Green at dusk, with a note tucked in the front, which said, I think this one should be written where it happens. Please don’t let it get wet. M. So this was written on the thumb tower, by Carol, in her own hand, from the Knock through the middle, with Iselle holding the book and the lamp, and Kessavel sitting beside them with his hands at his throat.

6 a.m. Garrick fed Kessavel bread. Kessavel said nobody had ever fed him.

Kessavel told us. Every god keeps their heart somewhere. Draum’s is a stone under the palm. It’s where his first tide turned. Kessavel built the fist around it, the month after the wave. Four fingers and a thumb. In iron. Around the heart.

A kind door opens from inside. You knock. Someone outside answers. Draum has been knocking every night for a month. The hand meant to answer for him with all the voices given to it. Come out. And he’d come out belonging to the hand.

Garrick and Uriah went down. The heart is a black stone as big as a hay cart, with green light inside. It beats. Garrick put his ear to it and said who’s there. Draum called him door-boy. Draum said I only need one.

We named all day. Everyone. The elves sang names. The fishermen sang every song they know. 214 → 58. We couldn’t find the last 58.

Brother Ostrand said the one who holds the key opens a kind door.

Seraphina folded to the aerie in her nightgown and woke Serevan. The phoenixes are coming from the west.

Midnight. The sea went out. All the way. The ice fell. The blue ships fell over.

Draum knocked. The 58 started to say come out. Garrick went down and said who’s there first. He holds the key. It’s his door now. He told Draum, any who come and ask. So ask.

Draum said he’s never asked for anything in his whole life.

The sea is standing up.

And under that, in a small, cramped, upright hand, the letters very sharp and very square, like the teeth of a key, written slowly and with great difficulty, because the hand that wrote them had to let go of something to do it, and then take hold of it again straight after:

Kessavel. I’d like it noted that I’m still holding it.
