The Greykeep Chronicles

My father came off the bottom of the back stair at a run and stopped.

He stopped the way you stop at the edge of a cliff you didn’t know was there. All at once. One foot on the last step and one on the floor of the lower hall, his hand on the wall, his frost hammer still in his other hand where he’d carried it down from the great hall without knowing he was carrying it. He was breathing hard. I’ve never once in my life heard my father breathe hard.

He looked at the hall. The black iron scattered over the old stone in a ring, still smoking a little. Kessavel on his knees with the collar on and his face on the floor, and Loki kneeling beside him with one hand on his gray head. The shut arch, white with frost.

Me, standing in front of it, with my right hand held up in front of my face.

And the slate.

He read it from where he stood. I watched him read it. Seraphina Grey, of Concordia. Going. Asked to. To bring them home. I watched his eyes go along the line and come back to the start and go along it again, the way Eleanor reads a plate, twice, to be sure.

Then he looked at me.

”She asked,” I said.

”I know,” said my father. ”I can see it on the slate.”

”She asked me, and I said yes. And she asked the Castellan, and it said yes. She went after Wynn’s mother. And his sisters. They were in Orselle, by the fountain, in a carriage, and they were going to take them west. Wynn opened the door.” My voice did something. I let it. ”Wynn opened the door, Father, because they had his mother and the girls, and she’s gone to get them back.”

My father came across the hall. He came through the black iron without looking at it and stopped in front of me, and he looked at my hand. At the light in the middle of it. Gold. Steady. The size of a coin.

”She left you that,” he said.

”So I’ll know she’s alive.”

He looked at it a long time. Then he put out one finger and touched the edge of my palm, very gently, beside the light, not on it, the way you’d touch the edge of a nest.

”It’s warm,” he said.

”It’s her.”

”Yes,” said my father. ”It is.” And then he did a thing he hasn’t done since I was eleven, since the night of the fever. He put his arms around me and held on.

* * *

I want to set down what I felt in him, because I felt it go. I was leaning on him by then, mostly; my legs had given up somewhere around the word Wynn. So I was close. I could feel it.

My father has the most patience of anyone I have ever known. More than Mary, who has kept the household book for twenty years and never once lost her temper with a blot. More than Eleanor with a cracked plate. More than Helena with a cake that won’t rise. He asked Malachar what he wanted. He has sat on a stool at the gate every morning for two weeks asking the milk in. He has never, in my whole life, made anyone do anything. He asks. And if they say no, he asks again tomorrow, and the day after, and he waits.

I’d always thought it went all the way down. Like a well with no bottom. I’d thought there wasn’t anything under it.

There was.

I felt him reach it. Standing in the lower hall with his arms around me and the frost hammer pressed against my back. I felt the patience go down and down in him, like a bucket on a rope, and then stop, and hit something.

Something cold.

Not cold like his frost. His frost is a gift; it’s what he gives people when they need things to hold still. This was older. The cold that was in him before the frost was. The cold of the western sea in the first winter, the night of Shearwater, when he stood on the wall and was going to go out alone and sink every ship on the water and Edric stood beside him and said Majesty, would you count to a thousand with me.

The lower hall went cold.

All at once. The smoke stopped rising off the black iron. Every fragment of the chain went white with rime. Loki’s breath came out of him in a cloud, and Kessavel lifted his head off the stone and looked at my father with his gray eyes wide, and the frost on the shut arch, the Castellan’s holding frost, went thicker, and creaked.

My father didn’t move. He didn’t say anything. He just held me, and the lower hall of Greykeep, a thousand years old, a cistern before it was a castle, went cold to the bones of the rock.

”Father,” I said.

”I’m here,” said my father. Very quietly. ”I’m not going anywhere. Where’s the boy?”

* * *

He’s safe.

That’s the whole of what I want to say about the next part. I’ll say it at length because it’s the best thing in this book, and because Mary says I’m allowed. But that’s the whole of it. He’s safe.

We went up the back stair together, my father and I, with my arm over his shoulders because I couldn’t do the stairs on my own anymore. Loki came behind us, half carrying Kessavel. At the top, in the passage, my father stopped outside the little kitchen and looked in.

Helena was still at the scrubbed table with her hands flat on the wood. Grandpa was still standing, leaning on his mallet. The six copper kettles were still in a row along the passage wall where Helena had put them. And the wolf was still lying across the door of the kettle cupboard, with his chin on his paws and his yellow eyes open and the blood drying in the white of his shoulder.

And on the flagstones by his paws, one on each side, the two halves of the iron collar.

My father looked at them.

He didn’t ask what they were. He didn’t need to. He knew the size of a child’s neck; he’d raised seven children. He went into the kitchen and bent and picked them up, one in each hand, and held them, and looked at them.

I watched the frost come up the iron from his fingers. White. Then thicker. Then the two halves of the collar went so cold that the iron began to sing, a thin high whine like a wet finger on a glass, and then stopped, and was just iron again, and white all through.

He put them in his coat pocket. Both halves. Carefully.

”Fenrir,” said my father.

The wolf looked at him.

”Thank you,” said my father. ”May I see him?”

* * *

He was asleep.

He’d gone back to sleep in the nest of tea towels and Helena’s shawl on the bottom shelf, the way babies do after anything at all has happened, with the absolute certainty that someone else is in charge. He was lying on his side with his knees drawn up and his fist under his cheek. The wooden horse was under his other arm. The hen cozy had slipped down over one ear. Above his head, on the shelf, Helena’s mother’s cups, white with the gold rims, in a row, catching the lamplight. All around him, warm and brown and dry, the smell of every tea in Greykeep.

And his right hand was open on the tea towel by his face, palm up, and in the middle of it, very faint, the last of the little glow. Going out slowly, the way a coal does when there’s nothing left for it to do.

He’d caught his father through the walls, and held the light up for as long as it was needed, and then fallen asleep.

My father knelt down on the flagstones beside the wolf and looked at him for a long time.

I’ve seen my father look at a great many things. The sea, freezing. Malachar, on the palace steps. The sea off Shearwater, the first winter, which he never spoke of for twenty years. I’ve never seen him look at anything the way he looked at my son asleep in the kettle cupboard among the teacups with a hen on his head.

”He’s safe,” said Helena, from the table, without looking up.

”He’s safe,” said my father.

”Nobody looks in the kettle cupboard,” said Grandpa.

”No,” said my father. ”Nobody does.” He put out his hand, very slowly, and laid the backs of his fingers against my son’s cheek, and the boy didn’t wake. ”Thank you, Helena. Thank you, Father.” He looked at the wolf. ”Thank you.”

Then he stood up.

And I watched my father’s face change.

* * *

I don’t know how to describe it. It wasn’t anger. My father doesn’t get angry; Roderic does, the weather follows him, and Carol does, and the frost cracks. My father has never once in my life been angry in the way other people are angry. This wasn’t that.

It was the face of a man putting something down that he’s carried a very long way. Patience. He’d carried it since Shearwater. He’d carried it through the war and the stream and the Council and Malachar and the gold in the gate and the asking, the endless asking, every morning, every courier, every priest. He’d carried it the way you’d carry a full bowl down a steep stair, so carefully, every step, never spilling.

And he put it down. Right there, in the little kitchen, beside the kettle cupboard, with his grandson asleep among the teacups and the halves of a child’s collar in his pocket.

”They brought a collar,” he said. ”For him.”

Nobody said anything.

”I asked them,” said my father. ”Twenty years. I asked Malachar what he wanted. I asked his priests. I asked the Hand. I asked every ship on the western sea to turn around, and most of them did. I’ve never sunk one. I’ve never once made anyone do anything.” He looked at the kettle cupboard door. ”And they came into my house in the night and sang my grandson’s name in a dead man’s voice because he’s too little to say it yet, and they brought a collar to put on him when he answered wrong.”

Helena had stopped breathing. I could see her not breathing.

”I’m done,” said my father. Very quietly. ”Asking them.”

* * *

He went up to the map room.

I went with him. I don’t know how I got up a hundred and twelve steps; Mary says Loki carried me for some of them and I don’t remember. I remember the top of the west tower, the round room with the maps covering every inch of the floor, kept current by the Castellan, new roads in black and old roads crossed out in red. I remember the cold. The whole tower was white with frost by the time we got to the top. The windows had frozen over in great thick ferns, not Carol’s, my father’s, harder and plainer, like the frost on an iron gate.

And on the floor, west of Westmere’s outer shoals, where the stone used to be bare and gray, the silk map of Kethra that Severin brought, trimmed to fit, laid there by the Castellan a long time ago. The map he wishes us to have.

The Castellan keeps it current too. I don’t know how. Every ship that sails on the western sea is on it, a little black mark moving very slowly across the silk, like a fly on a window. I’d never looked closely before.

There were a great many of them.

Thirty-one, in a straight line, across the mouth of a bay on the western coast, with a thin white line inside them: Caldermouth, and Carol’s ice. Three marks gone gray inside Westmere’s harbor wall: the cutters, in the inner basin, with Tamar’s men watching them. Black marks strung along the coast north and south, far more than I’d ever have guessed, sitting in bays and off headlands, waiting. Black marks out on the open sea in long lines, going west, coming east. Dozens. More.

And one, off the Orselle coast, at the end of the long mole in the harbor, black, alone, with a tiny spark of gold beside it. Moving. Just beginning to move.

My father stood on the edge of the silk map with his frost hammer in his hand and the two halves of the collar in his pocket and looked at it all.

Then he knelt down, the way he knelt at Westmere the day he froze the western sea, and put his left hand flat on the silk.

* * *

I’ve seen my father freeze things my whole life. I’ve never seen him do it like that.

He didn’t stand on a wall. He didn’t reach. He didn’t even close his eyes. He put his hand on the map of the western sea in the top of the west tower of Greykeep, three hundred miles from the nearest salt water, and he looked at the little black marks on the silk, every one of them, one at a time, the way he’d looked at the slate in the lower hall, and every one he looked at went white.

The thirty-one at Caldermouth. White.

The black marks strung along the coast in the bays. White. One after another, from north to south, like candles being snuffed down a long table.

The long lines out on the open sea. White. White. White.

I felt it go out of him. Not the way it went out of me at Westmere, in pieces, with sweat. All at once, the way water goes out of a bucket you’ve turned over, the whole of it, steady, without hurry. The cold went out of my father’s hand into the silk and through the silk into the floor of the map room and down the west tower and out under Greykeep and across the hills and the downs and the three hundred miles of dark country to the sea, and the sea, wherever there was a Kethran hull on it, froze.

Not the whole sea. He wasn’t trying to freeze the whole sea. He’s done that once, for something else. This was different. This was every ship. A ring of ice around every Kethran hull on the water from the northern islands to the southern capes, a few feet thick, gripping the hull like a hand. The way I’d done it at Westmere to three cutters, with my back breaking.

He did it to all of them. Kneeling on a map. Without breathing hard.

Except one.

* * *

The black mark off the Orselle mole. The one with the tiny spark of gold beside it, beginning to move.

His hand went toward it. I saw it. His eyes went to it, and his fingers moved on the silk, and the frost on the floor around his hand reached out toward that one black mark on the Orselle coast like a tide reaching for a stone.

And stopped.

An inch short. Less. The white stopped on the silk a hair’s width from the black mark and the gold spark beside it, and stayed there. Not touching.

My father knelt with his hand on the map and looked at that one ship for a long time.

”That’s hers,” I said.

”I know,” said my father.

”You could stop it. You could freeze it right there at the mole and she’d have them off it by morning.”

”I know.” He didn’t move his hand. ”And she’d have had them off it by morning anyway, or she wouldn’t. And either way it would be because I decided. Not her.” He looked at the spark of gold. ”She asked to go. She asked you, and she asked the Castellan. She didn’t ask me to help.” He was quiet for a moment. ”She asked to do it herself. I’m not going to take that off her. Not even tonight.”

He lifted his hand off the map.

The one black mark, alone on the white sea of the silk, with its spark of gold beside it, went on moving. Slowly. West.

* * *

He went down to the great hall at four in the morning.

They were still there. Thirty-eight men in black, frozen to the knees, to the waist, in a field of white ice across the great hall floor. Thor had stopped tidying them. She was sitting on the edge of the dais with her hammer across her knees, eating an apple, and when my father came in through the crack in the frozen doors she stopped chewing and put the apple down.

She looked at his face and got up off the dais.

The men in the ice looked at him too. The ones with faces. The ones without faces looked at him the way they look at everything, with nothing.

My father walked into the middle of the ice and stood there. He took the two halves of the collar out of his coat pocket and held them up, one in each hand, white with frost, so that every man in the hall could see them.

He didn’t ask anybody anything.

”You came into my house,” he said, ”with this. For a child who can’t say his own name yet.” He didn’t raise his voice. He’s never raised it. It went quieter, if anything, and the quieter it went the colder the hall got. ”Every ship you came on is frozen in the sea tonight. All of them. From the northern islands to the southern capes. They’ll stay there till I let them go.”

Nobody in the hall breathed.

”I’m going to let you go,” said my father. ”All of you. You’ll walk down to the coast, and then you’ll walk out across the ice to your ships, and you’ll stand on your decks, and when the ice lets go you’ll sail home. And when you get there, you’ll tell whoever’s holding the other end of that thread.” He held up the collar halves. ”You’ll tell them I’ve asked for twenty years. You’ll tell them I’m finished asking. And you’ll tell them that the next time anyone brings one of these into my house, I won’t stop at the water.”

He put the collar halves back in his pocket.

”That’s all,” said my father. ”Thor. Will you see them to the gate?”

”Aye,” said Thor.

And the ice let go of thirty-eight men all at once, with a sound like a lake breaking up in spring, and they walked out of the great hall of Greykeep in a line, with Thor behind them, not one of them looking back, and the ones with faces were crying.

* * *

I carried my son down to the wolf at a quarter past five.

Fenrir had moved at last. Not until the boy was lifted out of the cupboard; not one inch until then. Helena opened the pine door, and I reached in past the teacups and lifted him out of the nest, hen and horse and all, warm and heavy and boneless with sleep, and only when he was in my arms and my arms were on my side of the door did the wolf get up off the flagstones.

He got up slowly. His shoulder was stiff. He stood and shook himself, once, and the dried blood flaked off the white fur onto the floor. Then he walked out through the kitchen door into the passage and lay down again across the bottom of the east stair, where I’d have to step over him to go up.

Mother came down from the solar and knelt beside him on the stone and put her hands on his shoulder, and the light came out of them, slow and warm, and he let her. Loki sat on the bottom step above him with his hand on his head.

I stood in the passage with my son asleep on my shoulder.

It wasn’t bedtime. It was nearly morning. He’d had his hand on the wolf’s nose already, at the kettle cupboard door, hours ago. He was asleep.

But I’d promised.

I knelt down beside Fenrir, carefully, with the boy on my shoulder, and Fenrir lifted his head and looked at us. My son stirred and woke, a little, the way they do, cross and blurry, and saw the wolf, and put out his hand, flat, without being asked, onto the great gray nose.

”Fen,” he said, and went back to sleep.

And I put my hand there too. My right hand. The one with the light in it. Beside his on the wolf’s nose. The coal in my palm glowed against the gray fur, gold, steady, and Fenrir closed his yellow eyes.

”Fen,” I said. For her.

A long way away, on a black ship going out past the Orselle mole into a sea that was frozen everywhere but where she was, I felt it. Through the little piece of the fold I’d given her, the end of the thread. I felt her feel it.

And the light in my palm went, for a moment, very slightly brighter.

* * *

From Mary’s book. Saturday, early. The hand is Mary’s, small and straight, steadier than the night’s pages:

Uriah came down the back stair running. He read the slate twice. He held Garrick.

The lower hall went cold to the rock.

Uriah picked up the halves of the collar. They are in his coat pocket. He says they will stay there.

The boy is safe. Asleep in the kettle cupboard among Helena’s mother’s cups, with the hen cozy over one ear. He held the light up for his father as long as it was needed, and then he slept.

Uriah said: I’m done asking them.

From the map room, with one hand on the silk, he froze every Kethran ship on the western sea. All of them. Except one. He did not touch hers.

He told thirty-eight men to walk home and tell whoever holds the thread that he is finished asking. Thor saw them to the gate.

Evelyn healed Fenrir’s shoulder on the bottom of the east stair. Fenrir did not get up off the kitchen floor until the boy was lifted out.

5:15 a.m. Garrick carried Uriah to the wolf. Uriah said Fen. Garrick said Fen. For her.

And under that, in a hand nobody in the house has seen in Mary’s book more than twice in twenty years, plain and upright and unhurried, the letters a little large, the hand of a man who has written mostly on slates at gates and on the bottom of treaties:

Uriah Grey. I’d like it noted that I asked for twenty years, and I’d ask again tomorrow for most things. But not for this. And that I left her ship alone. Because she asked first.
