The Greykeep Chronicles

Odile of Amberlay was waiting outside the little door when I came down to the gate on Friday morning.

It was barely light. The frost was thick on the road and on the bars and on the shoulders of her dark red coat, and she was standing exactly where she’d stood the day before, a little apart from where the line would be, with her hands folded in front of her. She looked as though she hadn’t slept. She looked as though she’d been standing there for some time.

I’d taken the early stool. My father had argued about it for about a minute, and then my mother had looked at him, and he’d stopped arguing.

”You came back,” I said through the bars.

”I didn’t go,” said Odile. ”I went down to the quay. There’s a taproom there. The Lantern and Oar.” Her mouth moved, very slightly. ”I sat by the fire all night with one cup of cider and thought about a question.”

”Which one?”

”Yours,” said Odile. ”What does Amberlay want. And then the one under it, that you didn’t ask, but that I kept hearing anyway.” She looked at me through the frost on the bars. ”What do you want, Odile.”

* * *

I set the stool down and sat on it, the way my father does. Inside the little door, with my back to Greykeep and my face to the hill.

”Name?” I said.

She almost smiled. ”You know my name.”

”I know it. I’m still asking. That’s how it works here.”

”Odile,” she said. ”Of Amberlay. Courier to the council. Twelve years.” She drew a breath. ”Home is a house on the Mill Lane behind the council hall, with my mother and my two aunts. All three of them widows from your father’s war. My father’s name is on the stone in the square, and both my uncles’.”

”What do you want?”

She didn’t answer straight away. She unfolded her hands and looked at them, the way people do when they’ve been asked for the first time and have to go looking.

”I want to tell you what’s in a letter,” said Odile. ”That I’m not allowed to carry.”

* * *

”I told you yesterday,” she said, ”that I carry the council’s questions and not its letters. That’s true. I’m not permitted to carry the council’s correspondence to anyone outside Amberlay. It’s the first thing they teach you. You carry what you’re given, to whom you’re told, and you don’t read it.”

”Did you read it?”

”No.” She looked up. ”I didn’t have to. I carried it in.”

I waited.

”Eleven days ago,” said Odile, ”a Kethran ship came into Amberlay harbor under a gray flag. Not a war flag. A courtesy flag. A man came off it with a letter in a box and asked for the council’s courier, because that’s the custom, a courier from one court to another. So they sent for me. And I went down to the harbor and took the box from him, and carried it up to the council hall, and stood at the door while they opened it, because that’s where a courier stands.” She swallowed. ”And they read it aloud. All seven of them, passing it from hand to hand. Because it was very long, and very beautiful, and none of them could quite believe it.”

”And you were at the door.”

”I was at the door,” said Odile. ”I’ve a good memory. You need one, for this work. I’ve carried messages by heart from Amberlay to Belleren and back without dropping a word.” Her hands had folded themselves again. ”I could tell you every line of it. If you asked.”

* * *

I looked at her for a long moment through the bars.

I thought about what it was costing her. Twelve years of carrying what she was given to whom she was told and never reading it. A house on the Mill Lane with three widows in it. A name on a stone in the square.

”Why?” I said.

”Because you asked me what Amberlay wanted,” said Odile. ”And I told you the truth: to be left alone. And then I sat by the fire all night and realized that it wasn’t the truth. Not all of it.” She lifted her chin. ”Amberlay wants to be left alone. But that letter doesn’t leave us alone. It just looks as if it does. And I’m the only person outside the council who’s heard it, and I’m the only person who can’t say so.”

”So what do you want?”

”I want somebody to hear it,” said Odile, ”who’ll know what it means.”

* * *

I asked her in.

I want that put down plainly, because it was the first time. My father had asked fifty-eight people in on Wednesday and sixty-one on Thursday, and I’d asked two at dusk, a carter’s widow and Master Ashby’s boy. But Odile was the first one I asked in who’d come to the gate as a stranger to the house, wearing another court’s colors, carrying a thing that might be dangerous.

”Castellan,” I said, to the air. ”This is Odile of Amberlay, courier to the council, of the Mill Lane. She wants someone to hear a letter. I’ve asked her in. Will you know her?”

The held air in front of the gate turned over.

The little door opened.

On the slate in the arch, under Juniper Ashery and the Velden courier and Master Ashby’s boy, a new line wrote itself:

Odile. Amberlay. The Mill Lane. Wants someone to hear.

* * *

I took her up to the little kitchen, because that’s where we take people.

Helena gave her porridge. Garth lifted his head from the flagstones under the table, looked at her, and put it down again. My father came in from the stair in his shirtsleeves and saw the dark red coat and stopped in the doorway, and I watched him put it together, the way he always does, faster than anyone.

”Sit down,” he said to Odile. ”Eat that first. Then tell us.”

She ate the porridge. All of it. I don’t think she’d eaten since she left Amberlay.

Then she put the spoon down and folded her hands on the table and closed her eyes, and said the letter.

* * *

I won’t put all of it down here. It was very long, and Mary has it word for word in the back of her book, in her smallest writing, and it took Odile nearly half an hour to say. But I’ll put down the parts that mattered.

It began To the council of Amberlay, from the Throne of Hands, in the name of Him Who Holds. It said that the Throne had watched Amberlay with sorrow for twenty years. That Amberlay had given its sons to a northern king’s war and been thanked with a stone in its square. That the Throne would never ask such a thing of Amberlay. That the Throne asked nothing at all.

It said that the gold in the forecourt last autumn had been a gift, freely given, and that the Throne was glad to see a school with a new roof.

It said that the war between the Throne and the north was not Amberlay’s war, and that the Throne wished Amberlay to have no part in it. That Amberlay’s sons would never be asked for. Not by the north, and not by the hand.

It said that grain would come to Amberlay from Kethra every autumn at the price it had been in Cardle for two hundred years.

* * *

”That’s very generous,” said my father, quietly, when Odile stopped to breathe.

”Yes,” said Odile. ”That’s what the council said. Councillor Marren read that part twice.” She kept her eyes shut. ”There’s more.”

The rest was shorter.

It said that, in friendship, Kethran ships passing to and from the northern coast might shelter in Amberlay’s harbor. Only shelter. Only in friendship. Nothing would be asked of Amberlay’s people.

And it said that a peace so generous should be sealed in the old way, so that both sides could trust it. That on a night of the council’s choosing, the council of Amberlay should come down to the harbor, all seven of them, at dusk. That priests of the hand would be there, with lamps, to witness. That each councillor should say the words of the peace, in the presence of the lamps, with their hand in the hand of the priest.

”And the words?” said my father.

Odile opened her eyes.

”We will hold Amberlay as our own,” she said. ”And Amberlay will be held.”

She was quiet a moment. ”They sent their answer back to the ship a week ago. They chose a night. Sunday. At dusk.”

* * *

Iselle had come in during the letter. I hadn’t seen her. She was standing in the door to the stair with Roderic behind her, and when Odile said the last line I heard her make a sound I’d never heard her make. Not a word. Just a breath going in, sharp, the way you’d breathe if you’d put your hand on a stove.

Everyone turned.

She was white. Her left hand had gone to her right wrist, to the place on the inside where the faint gray fist is, the one she keeps by choice now, the one that opens doors in the golden city.

”Say it again,” said Iselle.

Odile looked at her, uncertain.

”We will hold Amberlay as our own,” she said. ”And Amberlay will be held.”

Iselle closed her eyes.

”We will hold you as our own,” she said. In Kethran. Very quietly. ”And you will be held.” She opened her eyes again. ”That’s what they said to me. At the bottom of the stair. When I was twelve. With the lamp in front of my face and the priest’s hand on mine.” She looked at Odile. ”That’s the small oath.”

* * *

Nobody said anything for a long time.

”It’s not a peace,” said Iselle. ”It’s a swearing. Seven people, at dusk, at the harbor, in front of lamps, with their hand in a priest’s. Saying the words. We will be held.” Her hand was still on her wrist. ”They’ll walk home afterward and feel exactly the same. They won’t notice anything. Not for weeks. And then one day one of them will want to do something, write a letter to Belleren, or say no to a ship in the harbor, and they’ll find they can’t. Not won’t. Can’t. Their hand won’t hold the pen.” She swallowed. ”Corvane said it. Afterward you belong. You can’t leave. Not that anyone wants to.”

Odile had gone very still.

”The whole council,” she said.

”The whole council,” said Iselle. ”And whoever the council answers to. And the harbor. And the ships that shelter in it.” She looked at my father. ”It’s not Amberlay being left out of the war. It’s Amberlay being folded into the hand. Without a single soldier. Without anybody asking anybody anything. Seven people saying yes to a beautiful letter.”

* * *

My father sat down at the end of the table, slowly, the way he does now when he’s tired.

”I told them I’d leave them out,” he said. ”Yesterday. I said if they wanted to be left out, I’d leave them out.”

”You did,” I said.

”I meant it.”

”I know you did.” I sat down across from him. ”But out isn’t the same as blind. They asked who was asked. They were right to. But nobody’s told them what they’re actually being asked.” I looked at Odile. ”She’s the only one who knows what’s in the letter who isn’t on the council. And the council doesn’t know what the words mean. They think it’s a seal. A ceremony. Like a handshake with lamps.”

”They’re grown people,” said my father. ”It’s their choice.”

”It’s not a choice if they don’t know what they’re choosing,” I said. ”That’s what Anwen said about the oath marks. Did you ever, freely. You can’t freely say yes to a thing nobody’s told you the shape of.” I leaned forward. ”I’m not saying we stop them. We can’t stop them, and we shouldn’t. It’s their harbor and their council and their yes. I’m saying somebody has to go and tell them what it means. And then let them choose.”

* * *

My father looked at me for a long time across the table.

”Who?” he said.

That was the question. I’d known it would be.

”Not you,” I said. ”You’re the king whose war put the names on their stone. Anything you say, they’ll hear as the north wanting its soldiers back.”

”No,” he agreed.

”Not me. I’m the one who started this one without asking them. They’ll hear me as the man who went into Cardle on a Sunday morning and now wants them in it.”

”No.”

”Not Iselle.” I looked at her. She’d sat down on the bench beside Roderic, and he had his hand over hers, over her wrist. ”There’ll be priests at that harbor in two nights. Priests who know her face. Who were there at the bottom of her stair.”

Iselle didn’t argue. That was how I knew she was frightened.

”Then who?” said my father again.

* * *

”Me,” said Seraphina.

She’d been sitting by the stove all this time, with our son asleep on her shoulder, so quietly that I think most of the kitchen had forgotten she was there.

Everyone turned.

”Me,” she said again. ”I’ll go.”

”Sera—”

”Think about it, Garrick.” She didn’t raise her voice. ”I wasn’t in your father’s war. I was a child in Concordia. My name isn’t on anybody’s stone, and nobody’s son died for anything I asked. I didn’t start this one. I wasn’t on the beach at Cardle. I’ve never been to Kethra and I’ve never been sworn to anything.” She shifted our son on her shoulder. ”And I was raised at my father’s court. I’ve been sitting in rooms full of frightened councillors since I was six, listening to my mother talk them around without ever once raising her voice. I know how it’s done.”

”They’ve heard about you,” said my father slowly. ”Everyone’s heard about you. The trough. The beach. And now, after Tuesday, the hall. The man of light burned out of it.”

”Yes,” said Seraphina. ”That’s the point.”

* * *

She stood up. Carefully, so as not to wake our son.

”Every person on that council has heard what I can do,” she said. ”By now they’ve heard I can cut a granite trough in half and the road under a god. They’ll be terrified of me before I open my mouth.” She looked at my father. ”So I’ll walk into their hall, and I’ll sit down, and I won’t do it. Any of it. I’ll put my hands on the table where they can see them, and I’ll tell them what the words mean, and I’ll tell them they can say yes or no and that nobody from Greykeep will lift a finger either way. And then I’ll get up and leave.”

”That’s all?” said Odile, very quietly.

”That’s all,” said Seraphina. ”The most dangerous person they’ve ever heard of, coming into their hall and not threatening them. Not once. Not with a word or a look.” She almost smiled. ”I think that’ll say more than anything I could tell them. A letter that asks nothing, and a woman who could burn the hall down asking nothing either. They can decide which one they believe.”

* * *

I looked at her. My wife. Standing in the little kitchen at Greykeep with our son asleep on her shoulder and her hands perfectly still.

On Tuesday night she’d walked down the great hall and put her hand into a god’s light and burned a road out of the world without singeing a thread. And afterward, on the east wall, she’d said: I didn’t know I could be careful with it.

She knew now.

”I’m coming,” I said.

”You started the war.”

”I know. I won’t say a word. I’ll sit at the back.” I held out my arms. ”I’ll hold the baby.”

Seraphina looked at me for a long moment. Then something in her face gave, the way it does when she’s decided to laugh and is trying not to.

”You’ll hold the baby,” she said.

”I’ll hold the baby.”

”For the whole thing. Without saying anything.”

”Without saying anything.”

She came across the kitchen and put our son into my arms. He woke, looked at me, said ”Da,” with deep satisfaction, and went back to sleep.

”Then you can come,” said Seraphina.

* * *

It had to be asked for, of course. You can’t walk into another court’s council hall because you’ve decided they need to hear something. That’s what the letter did. That’s what the gold did. That’s the whole trouble.

So I asked Odile.

”Will you carry something home for us?” I said. ”Not a letter. An asking. Will you ask your council whether they’ll hear one person from Greykeep before they go down to the harbor? Seraphina. With me holding our son at the back, saying nothing. We’ll come only if they say yes. If they say no, we won’t come, and nobody will do anything about it, and I’ll be sorry, but it’ll be their no.” I paused. ”You can say no too. You’ve done enough already. More than you were allowed.”

Odile looked at me across the kitchen table for a long time.

”I’ll ask them,” she said. ”Tonight. I can be home by midnight on the river road if I ride hard.” She stood up. ”I’ll ask them properly. Name, and what, and who. And that they can say no.” She paused at the door. ”I don’t know what they’ll say. Councillor Marren read the grain part twice.”

”I know,” I said. ”Ask anyway.”

* * *

Iselle came to find me in the afternoon. I was in the great hall, by the loom, where Saba was weaving and our son was sitting underneath it watching the shuttle again, and the black mark on the east wall between the third and fourth windows was already starting to look like it had always been there.

She had a piece of paper in her hand. She gave it to Seraphina, not to me.

”The words,” she said. ”The whole small oath. All of it, not just the end. In Kethran and in ours. And what each part does.” She’d written it in her small upright careful hand, the letters set close together. ”So you can show them. Not tell them. Show them. The words in the letter are the last two lines. The first lines are the ones the priests say at the lamp before the hand goes in.” Her voice was steady. Her hand on her wrist wasn’t. ”They won’t be in the letter. They never are. You only hear them at the bottom of the stair.”

Seraphina read it. Then she folded it very carefully and put it inside her dress, against her heart.

”Thank you,” she said.

”Anwen says to tell you something too,” said Iselle. ”She says: Tell them to look at who’ll be holding the lamps. A promise is a promise because someone witnesses it. Ask them who’s witnessing theirs.”

* * *

Odile’s answer came on Saturday morning, a little after six, by a pigeon that landed on the Castellan’s slate in the arch and wouldn’t leave until I’d untied the paper from its leg.

It was three lines, in a quick plain courier’s hand.

The council will hear her. Noon today, in the hall. Councillor Marren says she will come alone to the door to ask her in, since that seems to be how it’s done now.

And under it, smaller:

They said yes four to three. Councillor Marren was one of the four. I don’t know why. — O.

* * *

From Mary’s book, Friday and Saturday. Friday’s entry runs over three pages, and the third is in Mary’s smallest hand, because the whole of the letter is copied in it word for word and she’d run out of room:

Odile of Amberlay came back. She sat at the Lantern and Oar all night with one cup of cider. Garrick asked her in. The first stranger he’s asked. The Castellan says: Wants someone to hear.

She said the Regent’s letter by heart. Half an hour. Grain at the Cardle price. Sons never asked for. Kethran ships to shelter in Amberlay harbor, in friendship. Sealed in the old way. Seven councillors at dusk at the harbor before lamps, hand in a priest’s hand. We will hold Amberlay as our own, and Amberlay will be held.

Iselle said: That’s the small oath. It’s not a peace. It’s a swearing.

Uriah said: I told them I’d leave them out. Garrick said: Out isn’t the same as blind.

Seraphina said: Me. The most dangerous person they’ve ever heard of, coming into their hall and not threatening them. Garrick said: I’ll hold the baby. The baby said Da.

Odile rode home on the river road to ask them.

Iselle wrote the whole small oath for Seraphina. Anwen says: Ask them who’s witnessing theirs.

Saturday. Pigeon. Four to three. Noon.

And under that, in a quick, plain, upright hand, very neat, with a courier’s habit of putting the date and place at the top, the hand of a woman who has written a great many addresses on a great many other people’s letters and almost nothing of her own:

Odile, courier to the council of Amberlay, the Mill Lane. Friday, at the kitchen table at Greykeep. I’d like it noted that I carried a letter for twelve years without reading one. That I carried this one in my head because I couldn’t help it. That I’ve never told a word of any message to anyone it wasn’t meant for, until today. And that I was asked what I wanted, and I found out it was this, and I’m not sorry, and I’ll tell the council so myself.
