The Greykeep Chronicles

Mary found it because of a drawer that wouldn’t shut.

It was Thursday morning, the day after the Coln. I was in her office in the south range at half past seven with a cup of tea, because Mary had asked me to come and help her count the names from the preserved district into the green ledger before they got away from her, and four hundred and nine is a great many names to get away. She was at her desk. I was on the window seat with the list. Faelan was on the floor with his laundry ledger, uninvited, copying the names of the two cows.

Mary opened the top drawer of her desk for a fresh nib, and shut it, and it didn’t shut.

She opened it again and shut it again. It stopped a finger’s width short, the way a drawer does when something’s caught at the back.

”Bother,” said Mary, and pulled it all the way out, and looked.

Then she didn’t say anything at all.

* * *

I should say what was in that drawer, because it matters.

Nibs. Sealing wax, red and green. A ball of string. A small knife for sharpening quills. A folded letter from Melody, very old, that I’m not supposed to know about. And at the back, in the corner, where Mary had put it in the autumn and never moved it since, a single gold coin.

Corvin’s coin. The one he kept out of Belleren’s chest, after asking, when the rest went back down the river by barge with a note saying No, thank you. Our roads are fine. He’d given it to Mary to keep. A big heavy gold piece with a closed fist on one face and the other face blank and polished like a mirror, so that when you looked at it you saw yourself. Mary had put it in the drawer closed-hand up and left it there, because Seraphina had said that was the right way to keep it.

It wasn’t closed-hand up anymore.

It was standing on its edge.

* * *

That’s why the drawer wouldn’t shut. The coin had turned itself on its edge at the back of the drawer and was leaning, very slightly, against the wood, the way a dog leans on a door it wants to go through. And the drawer, when Mary pushed it shut, had come up against it.

Mary looked at it for a long moment. Then she looked at me.

”Garrick,” she said. ”Fetch Seraphina. Please.”

Faelan had stopped copying the cows. He’d come up off the floor without a sound and was standing at Mary’s elbow, looking into the drawer with his enormous serious gray eyes.

”It’s leaning,” he said.

”Yes,” said Mary.

”Coins don’t lean.”

”No,” said Mary. ”Not on their own.”

* * *

Seraphina came up from the little kitchen with our son on her hip and flour on her sleeve. She didn’t ask anything. She came into the office and looked at Mary’s face, and then at mine, and then at the open drawer on the desk, and gave our son to Faelan, who held him very carefully with both arms, as though he’d been handed a full bucket.

Then she bent over the drawer and looked at the coin standing on its edge.

”Oh,” she said quietly.

She put out one finger and touched it. The coin didn’t fall over. It glowed, very faintly, white-gold, the way I’d seen it glow in the autumn on the road to Velden when she first showed me what she could do with gold. And it leaned. Harder. Toward the window, and the courts beyond it, and down.

”Gold forgets everything except the fire,” said Seraphina. She was talking to herself, I think. ”Iron remembers the hammer. Glass remembers the breath. Gold only remembers the fire it was poured in. And every coin poured in the same fire leans toward the others. Like cousins.” She straightened up slowly. ”In the autumn there were twelve thousand cousins, all over the north. I could feel them pulling from here like weather.”

”And now?” said Mary.

”Now they’ve gone. Most of them. Spent, sent back, melted. I haven’t felt them in weeks.” Seraphina looked at the coin. ”But this one’s leaning. Hard. Which means there’s a cousin close by. Very close.” She turned her head, slowly, toward the window. ”It’s not in Havenreach. It’s not in the lower town.”

”Where?” I said.

”Here,” said Seraphina. ”It’s inside Greykeep.”

* * *

Nobody said anything for a moment.

I want to put down exactly why that was so bad. Because on the face of it it doesn’t sound like much. A coin. Gold. Kethran gold had been in a dozen forecourts in the north since the autumn. There was a chest of it under a white cloth in the chapel at Tirrowmarch until Garran sent it back, and another at Velden that built a bridge, and another at Amberlay that put shoes on Widows’ Row. Gold was everywhere. Gold was nothing.

But Greykeep had been shut since Tuesday night last.

Every gate. Every door. Every arch in the lower hall. Nobody had come into Greykeep in nine days who hadn’t been in before, or been asked in at the outer gate by my father or me, with three questions and a word to the air, and been written on the slate in the arch. The Castellan had watched every one of them. The Castellan watches everything.

So if there was Kethran gold inside Greykeep, it hadn’t come in with a stranger.

It had come in with someone the house already knew.

* * *

”Faelan,” said Mary. ”Give the baby back to Seraphina, please, and go and find your father. Quietly. Don’t run, and don’t tell anyone why.”

Faelan looked at her. Then he gave our son back, very carefully, and went out without a word, walking, the way you’d walk if you’d been told not to run and wanted everyone to see how well you were doing it.

Seraphina picked up the coin.

She held it flat on her open palm, closed-hand down, mirror up, so that it showed her own face. It didn’t lie flat. It tipped, very slowly, until it was standing on its edge in the middle of her hand, pointing.

”Come on,” she said to it. ”Show me.”

* * *

It took us down.

That was the first thing. Out of Mary’s office and along the south range and down the back stair, the servants’ stair that comes out by the old cellars. Seraphina in front with the coin on her palm, our son on her hip watching it with great interest. Mary behind her with her book under her arm, because Mary never goes anywhere important without her book. Me at the back.

My father caught up with us at the bottom of the back stair, in his shirtsleeves, with Faelan behind him, still walking very carefully. He looked at the coin on Seraphina’s hand and his face didn’t change at all, which is how I knew how frightened he was.

”Where?” he said.

”Down,” said Seraphina. ”Still down.”

There’s only one place at Greykeep that’s further down than the old cellars.

* * *

The lower hall is the oldest part of the house. It was a cistern once, before there was a Greykeep. Now it’s a long stone vault with a worn floor and one high lamp at each end, and down one side of it, six arches, each with a brass plate set into the stone beside it and a ledger on a stand. The gate arches. Lyradon, Concordia, the two southern towns, Greymere and Orselle sharing one, and Westmere at the end, the smallest, Eleanor’s own.

Or there had been six. Eleanor and Aldren had been at work down there for a week. The Lyradon arch was gone already, carried down under the hill to the quay at Havenreach on Monday. Where it had stood there was a raw new opening in the wall with timber shores across it and a strong smell of wet mortar, and a long dark tunnel going down and away under the castle toward the river.

The other five were still there. But there was scaffolding against the wall around the Greymere and Orselle arch, and planks on the floor, and Aldren’s tools laid out in a row on a canvas, oiled, and a bucket of lime. A block of new stone sat on rollers at the far end in the lamplight, waiting to be told where to go.

Eleanor was on the scaffolding with a chisel. Aldren was below her with his arms folded, watching her not wait for the mortar.

They both turned when we came in. Eleanor saw the coin on Seraphina’s hand standing on its edge, and put her chisel down.

”No,” she said.

* * *

The coin led Seraphina straight down the length of the lower hall, past the Concordia arch and the two southern ones, to the scaffolding at the Greymere and Orselle arch, and stopped.

It was leaning so hard now it was nearly lying down. Pointing at the wall. Not at the arch itself. At the brass plate beside it, the old one, the one with Orselle’s salt still crusted in its engraving from the day the gate shut on Kip Marrow like a mouth and the Castellan shouted Not mine for the first time in its life.

”Behind that,” said Seraphina.

Eleanor came down off the scaffolding very slowly.

”That plate hasn’t been off the wall since I deepened the closing mark on it myself,” she said. ”I put my name under it. Nobody takes it off but me.” She looked at Aldren. ”We were going to take it off this afternoon. For the move. I was going to do it myself.”

”Do it now,” said my father.

* * *

It took her a quarter of an hour. Eleanor’s wards don’t come off quickly, even for Eleanor; that’s the point of them. She stood in front of the plate with her hand flat on the brass and said things to it under her breath in the grammar she uses for stone, and the knot of tied letters that is her name went bright, and then dim, and then the plate loosened in the wall like a tooth.

She lifted it out. It was heavier than it looked. Aldren took it from her and laid it face down on the canvas.

Behind it, where the plate had been, was the bare stone of the wall, and the shallow socket the plate had sat in, and the old mortar around the edges.

And a gap. At the bottom of the socket. Where a little of the old mortar had been dug out, very neatly, with something thin, and the hole packed back afterward with a paste that was almost the right color.

Almost.

* * *

Aldren saw it first. He’s a builder. He sees mortar the way Mary sees punctuation.

”That’s not ours,” he said. ”That’s not lime. That’s—” He bent and sniffed it. ”That’s bread. Bread and ash, rolled together, and pressed in. Somebody’s done that with their thumb.” He straightened. ”That’s not a mason. A mason would never. That’s somebody who’s watched masons.”

He took the thinnest chisel off the canvas, the one he uses for pointing, and looked at Eleanor.

”May I?”

”Yes,” said Eleanor. Her voice was very quiet.

He dug the paste out. It came away easily. Behind it was a hollow in the wall, about the size of a fist, that had been cut into the stone behind the old mortar line. And in the hollow, wedged tight, a small leather purse.

* * *

Aldren didn’t touch it. He looked at my father.

My father reached past him and took it out.

It was new leather. That was the first thing I noticed. Soft, brown, good quality, the kind of purse a merchant keeps his day’s takings in. Not old. Not something that had been in a wall for long. Something that had been put there recently. In the last month, Aldren said afterward. The bread hadn’t gone hard all the way through.

My father opened it and tipped it out into his palm.

Gold. Twenty coins, maybe more. Big heavy pieces, each with a closed fist on one side and the other side blank and polished like a mirror.

On Seraphina’s palm, Corvin’s coin lay down flat at last, closed-hand up, as though it had arrived somewhere and could rest.

* * *

There was something else in the purse.

A piece of paper. Folded very small, the way you’d fold a note to pass under a door. My father unfolded it with one hand, because the other was full of gold.

It was black. Black paper, the kind that came to the courts in the autumn. And on it, in thin silver writing that caught the lamplight, very neat, one line:

For the little ones. There is no need to answer.

No name. No seal. Only, at the bottom, very small, a silver closed hand.

* * *

I’ve thought about that note a great deal since. I’ve read it so many times I could draw it for you. I want to say I understood it, then, in the lower hall, standing by the scaffolding with my wife and my father and Mary and Eleanor and Aldren and Faelan, and a block of new stone waiting at the far end.

I didn’t.

I thought: the little ones. Somebody’s children. Somebody’s grandchildren. Somebody’s brothers and sisters. Half the house has little ones somewhere. Helena’s girls in the kitchens send their wages home to little ones. The stable lads. The laundry women. The guards. It could have been anyone.

That’s what I thought.

* * *

”It’s not a payment,” said my father. He’d closed his hand over the coins. ”Not yet. Look at it. There is no need to answer. That’s the first asking. The one with no asking in it. Edric told us how it goes. The flour on the doorstep. The roof mended. The doctor for the fever. Nothing ever asked.” He looked at the hollow in the wall. ”Somebody in this house has been given gold. And told they needn’t do anything for it. And they’ve hidden it here, behind Eleanor’s plate, where nobody would look.”

”Because they’re ashamed of it,” said Mary quietly.

”Or because they’re frightened of it,” said my father. ”Or both. That’s how it works. You don’t feel bought. You feel grateful. And grateful is a door that only opens one way.”

* * *

It was Eleanor who said it.

She’d been standing very still by the scaffolding since the purse came out of the wall. She hadn’t said anything. She had her hands at her sides, and there was mortar dust on her spectacles, and she was looking at the hollow behind her own plate with her own name on it.

”Not many people know that plate comes off,” she said.

Nobody answered.

”It doesn’t look as if it comes off. It’s the oldest in the hall. It’s set deep. It has my name on it.” She took off her spectacles and looked at them and didn’t clean them. ”To know you could get behind it, you’d have to have watched me take it off. Or put it on. Or deepen the mark.” She put her spectacles back on. ”I did all six plates at once, that week. Garrick watched. Mary had the ledgers open.”

She stopped.

”And the masons from Orselle,” said Aldren, very gently. ”On Wednesday. They were in here all morning looking at the arches. And me. I’ve been in here a week. And the—”

”Don’t,” said Eleanor.

”I’m only saying, it’s not a short list.”

”I know it’s not a short list,” said Eleanor. ”That’s what I’m afraid of.”

* * *

The Castellan’s lamp was burning on the wall at the end of the lower hall, high up, the way it always does.

It hadn’t said anything. It hadn’t written anything. There was no slate down here; there’s never been need of one, because Eleanor talks to the Castellan in the lower hall the way you’d talk to someone sitting beside you, and it answers in the way the gates hum.

My father turned toward it.

”Castellan,” he said. ”Did you know?”

For a long time there was nothing.

Then the lamp at the end of the hall flickered, and dimmed, and the light went very low and blue, the way a candle goes when there’s no air.

And every gate in the lower hall, all five that were left, made a sound I had never heard them make. Not a hum. A sort of long low note, falling, like a breath going out of something very large.

”No,” said my father quietly, answering it. ”No. I know. It’s not your fault.”

He went down the hall to stand under the lamp. He didn’t touch the wall. He just stood there, with his hand full of gold, and looked up at it.

”It came in with someone you know,” he said. ”That’s why you didn’t see it. You don’t search the people you know. You weren’t made to. You were made to keep the house, and the house is the people in it.” He was quiet a moment. ”Neither do I.”

The lamp flickered.

”So we won’t,” said my father. ”We’re not going to start now. Not the rooms. Not the bags. Not the pockets.” He turned around and looked at us, all of us, standing by the scaffolding in the lamplight. ”Is that understood? Nobody searches anybody. Nobody’s room gets turned over. Nobody’s asked to turn out their pockets in the kitchen in front of everyone. That’s what the hand does. That’s what they want us to do. Find gold in the walls and start looking at each other sideways.”

”Then how do we find out who?” said Mary.

My father looked down at the coins in his hand.

”The way we find out everything,” he said. ”We ask.”

* * *

He put the purse back.

I want to put that down, because it surprised me more than anything else that morning. He put the gold back in the leather purse, and the black note with it, folded the way it had been, and he put the purse back in the hollow in the wall. And he asked Aldren to pack the bread-and-ash paste back in front of it exactly as it had been, and Aldren did, with his thumb, the way he said someone had done it before. And he asked Eleanor to put her plate back on.

”Why?” said Eleanor.

”Because whoever put it there is going to come back for it,” said my father. ”Or come to look at it. People always do. They can’t help it. And when they do, I’d like them to find it where they left it.” He looked at Seraphina. ”Can you feel it? If you’re not standing next to it? If someone moves it?”

Seraphina looked at Corvin’s coin lying flat on her palm.

”If someone moves it,” she said slowly, ”this one will lean. Wherever I am. It knows its cousins now.” She closed her hand over it. ”I’ll keep it on me. Day and night.”

”Good,” said my father.

”And when it leans?” I said.

”Then we’ll know who,” said my father. ”And then we’ll go and sit down beside them, wherever they are, and ask them whether they’re all right.”

* * *

We went back up the servants’ stair in silence.

At the top, by the old cellars, Faelan stopped. He’d been walking very carefully the whole time, not running, the way Mary had told him. He looked back down the stair toward the lower hall.

”It’s someone we know,” he said.

”Yes,” said my father.

”Someone in the house.”

”Yes.”

Faelan was quiet for a long moment. He’s ten. He keeps the laundry ledger for the whole of Greykeep and knows every shirt and every sheet and every name stitched in every collar.

”I don’t want it to be anybody,” he said.

My father put his hand on his son’s shoulder.

”No,” he said. ”Neither do I.”

* * *

From Mary’s book, Thursday. The entry is short, and Mary has written it in pencil instead of ink, which she never does, and in one place she’s rubbed something out and not written anything over it:

Thursday. Counting the names from the Coln. Four hundred and nine. Faelan did the cows.

Corvin’s coin was standing on its edge at the back of my top drawer. It wouldn’t let it shut.

Seraphina says gold leans toward the coins poured in the same fire. Like cousins. It was leaning toward something inside Greykeep.

Greykeep has been shut nine days. Nobody’s come in who wasn’t known or asked.

Lower hall. Behind Eleanor’s plate at the Greymere and Orselle arch. Bread and ash pressed in with a thumb. Aldren says not a mason; someone who’s watched masons.

A new leather purse. Kethran gold. A black note in silver. For the little ones. There is no need to answer.

Uriah asked the Castellan if it knew. Every gate made a sound like a breath going out. Uriah said: It’s not your fault. It came in with someone you know.

Uriah said: Nobody searches anybody. We ask.

He put it back. Eleanor’s plate is on again. Seraphina is keeping Corvin’s coin on her, day and night.

Faelan said: I don’t want it to be anybody.

And under that, where a guest’s line would go, nothing. Only, very small, in Mary’s own hand, in pencil:

No guest today. I didn’t want to ask anyone.
