The Greykeep Chronicles

I had never been to Amberlay. Seraphina had, once.

”I was twelve,” she said, on the east wall at nine on Saturday morning, with our son on her hip and Iselle’s folded paper inside her dress. ”Ten years after your father’s war. My mother went to lay flowers at the stone in the square, on its tenth year. She took me because she said I should see what a war costs when it’s finished, not just while it’s happening.” She looked east. ”I remember the stone. And the square, and a well with a green roof over it, and a great many women in black standing very still. I remember thinking there couldn’t be that many women in black in the whole world.”

”Can you fold there?”

”To the well,” said Seraphina. ”I think so. I’ve had it in me for ten years. It’s not the sort of thing you lose.” She shifted our son. ”I’ll take us. You hold him.”

”I’ll hold him.”

”And you won’t say anything.”

”I won’t say anything.”

She looked at me sideways. ”Garrick.”

”I won’t,” I said. ”I promise. Not a word. I’ll be furniture.”

”You’ve never once been furniture in your life,” said my wife, and took my hand, and folded.

* * *

The well was still there, with its green roof. So was the stone.

It stood in the middle of the square at Amberlay, gray granite, as tall as a man, with names cut into it on all four sides from the top almost to the bottom, so close together that the letters ran into one another. There was moss in some of the older cuts. There were fresh flowers at the foot of it, small white winter ones in a jar, and the jar had been filled that morning; the water was clear.

I hadn’t meant to count. I couldn’t help it. I got to two hundred on the side facing us before I made myself stop.

Our son had gone very quiet in my arms. He was looking at the stone too. He put his hand out toward it, not reaching, just flat, the way he puts it on people’s cheeks.

”I know,” I said, very low. ”I know.”

Seraphina was already walking across the square toward the council hall.

* * *

Councillor Marren was standing alone at the door.

She was old. Older than Helena, I thought. Small and very straight, in black that had gone brown at the seams with washing, with white hair pinned up tight and a face like a winter apple. She had her hands folded in front of her exactly the way Odile folded hers, and I understood that Odile had learned it from her.

She watched us come across the square and didn’t move until we stopped in front of her.

”Lady Seraphina,” she said.

”Seraphina,” said my wife. ”Of Concordia, and Greykeep.”

Councillor Marren looked at her for a long moment. Then at me, behind her, with our son. Then back.

”Odile tells me,” she said slowly, ”that at your house, when someone comes to the door, they’re asked three things before they’re let in. And that it’s become the custom.” She drew a breath. ”I’ve been practicing. I’m not very good at it. I’m seventy-one and nobody’s asked me anything in years.” She lifted her chin. ”What is your name?”

”Seraphina.”

”Where is your home?”

”Greykeep. And Concordia, before.”

”What do you want?”

”To tell you what some words mean,” said Seraphina. ”And then to go home and let you decide what to do with them.”

Councillor Marren looked at her for a long time.

”Come in,” she said.

* * *

The council hall at Amberlay is one long room with a table down the middle and seven chairs, and windows on one side looking out on the square and the stone. There’s a fire at one end. The walls are bare except for one thing: a painted board over the fireplace with the names of every councillor who has ever sat at that table, going back three hundred years.

Six of them were already sitting. Marren made seven. She took the chair at the head.

They’d put a chair for Seraphina at the other end, facing her, with the whole length of the table between. Nobody had put a chair for me. I’d expected that. I stood at the back by the door, against the wall, with our son on my hip, and tried to look like furniture.

Every one of the six was watching Seraphina.

I know what they saw, because I’d watched people see it before. A young woman in a plain gray dress with her dark hair pinned up and her hands at her sides. And behind her, filling the room the way smoke fills a room, everything they’d heard. The horse trough at Concordia cut clean in two. The road under a god burned out of the world on Tuesday night in the great hall at Greykeep, and a white light at the top of a chimney seen from the lower town.

A man near the fire, broad and red-faced, with a merchant’s chain across his chest, had his hand on the arm of his chair as though he might need to get up quickly.

Seraphina sat down.

And then she put both her hands on the table in front of her, flat, palms down, side by side, where every one of them could see them.

And left them there.

* * *

She didn’t speak for a moment. Neither did anyone else.

I watched the room. I watched them look at her hands, and then at her face, and then at her hands again, waiting for something. A glow. A shimmer. The wood under her fingers going dark.

Nothing happened. The table stayed a table. Her hands stayed hands.

The red-faced man near the fire took his hand off the arm of his chair.

”I’m Seraphina,” she said. ”I think you know what I can do. I’m not going to do any of it. Not today, not in this room, not to anyone in it, whatever you decide. My husband is at the back holding our son and he’s promised not to say a word, and he never keeps that sort of promise, so if he does you’ll know how much it matters.” Somebody at the table made a sound that was nearly a laugh. ”Greykeep isn’t asking you for anything. Not soldiers. Not ships. Not a promise. I haven’t brought a letter. I haven’t brought gold. I’ve brought one piece of paper, and I’d like to read it to you, and then I’ll go home.”

* * *

”Greykeep isn’t asking for anything,” said the red-faced man. ”That’s what the other letter said.”

”Yes,” said Seraphina. ”It is. That’s why I said it. I want you to hear how it sounds from both sides.” She didn’t move her hands. ”You’re Councillor—?”

”Brandt. Harbor and trade.” He looked at her hard. ”I voted against hearing you.”

”I know. Odile told us four to three.” She looked at him steadily. ”Thank you for coming anyway.”

He opened his mouth, and shut it.

”Odile also told us,” said Seraphina, ”that you’ve been offered grain at the Cardle price every autumn. That your sons will never be asked for. That Kethran ships may shelter in your harbor. And that to seal it, the seven of you will go down to the harbor at dusk tomorrow and put your hands in a priest’s hands in front of lamps, and say: We will hold Amberlay as our own, and Amberlay will be held.”

”That’s the shape of it,” said Brandt.

”That’s the end of it,” said Seraphina. ”It isn’t the shape. Nobody’s told you the shape. That’s what I came to do.”

* * *

She took the paper out of her dress. Iselle’s paper. She unfolded it on the table between her hands, very carefully, and smoothed it flat.

”This was written for me yesterday,” she said, ”by a woman who took these words when she was twelve years old, at the bottom of a stair in the golden city, with a priest’s hand on hers and a lamp in front of her face. She’s kept the mark on her wrist ever since. It’s still there. She’d have come herself, but there will be priests at your harbor tomorrow who were at the bottom of that stair, and she’s frightened of them. She has reason to be.”

She looked down at the paper.

”The last two lines are the ones in your letter. The priests say the first lines. They never write them down. You only hear them at the lamp, after your hand is already in theirs.” She lifted her head. ”This is what they’ll say to you tomorrow, at dusk.”

And she read it.

* * *

I’d heard it once, the afternoon before, in the great hall, when Iselle gave Seraphina the paper and Seraphina read it through once under her breath. I hadn’t been able to get it out of my head since.

Give us your hand, that it may be held.

Give us your yes, that it may be kept.

You will not be hungry, for we will feed you.

You will not be afraid, for we will keep you.

You will not want, for you will not want.

We will hold you as our own.

And you will be held.

* * *

Seraphina put the paper down.

The room was absolutely silent. Through the window I could see the stone in the square, and a woman in black who’d stopped beside it with a basket on her arm and was standing with her head bowed.

”You will not want,” said Seraphina quietly, ”for you will not want. That’s the line that matters. It doesn’t mean you’ll have everything you want. It means you’ll stop wanting things. That’s what the oath does. It doesn’t take your land or your sons or your harbor. It takes the wanting. Afterward you’ll be fed, and you won’t be afraid, and you won’t want anything, ever, that the hand doesn’t want for you.” She looked down the table. ”The man who told us about it was a captain in their fleet for thirty-one years. Born in Cardle. He said: Nobody starved. Nobody left. Nobody asked. We thought that was peace.”

* * *

Nobody said anything for a long time.

Then a young man halfway down the table on the left, thin and dark, with ink on his fingers, said in a voice that cracked: ”How do we know that’s true? That those are the words? You could have written them yourself.”

”You can’t,” said Seraphina. ”Not for certain. I can’t prove it to you. I can only tell you who wrote them, and that she’s been afraid of a knock at the door since she was twelve years old.” She looked at him. ”But I can tell you how to find out. Someone very old said it to me, and I’ll say it to you. A promise is a promise because someone witnesses it. So tomorrow, at the harbor, look at who’ll be holding the lamps.”

She turned her head and looked at Councillor Marren.

”Who in Amberlay will be there to see you promise?”

* * *

Councillor Marren didn’t answer straight away.

”Nobody,” she said at last. ”The letter asks for the council alone. At dusk. At the end of the harbor wall where the Kethran ship is moored.”

”So your people won’t see it,” said Seraphina. ”The ones you’ll be promising for. The women at the stone. The children at the new school with the new roof. They won’t be asked, and they won’t be there. The only witnesses will be the priests.” She paused. ”When you promise something for someone, and they aren’t there, and nobody who loves them is there, and the only people watching are the ones who’ll be holding you afterward—” She stopped. ”I don’t think that’s a peace. I think that’s a door closing, very quietly, with nobody on the other side to hear it.”

* * *

That was when our son got down.

I want to say I let him. I didn’t. He’d been very good, very quiet, very heavy, on my hip, and I’d been so busy listening that I hadn’t noticed him working out that the floor was right there. He slid down the front of me like a sack of meal, landed on his bottom on the flagstones, considered the situation for a moment, and set off up the side of the room on his hands and knees, very fast, toward the head of the table.

I nearly said his name. I actually opened my mouth. Seraphina didn’t turn around, but I saw the back of her neck change, and I shut it again.

He went all the way up the side of the room, past the young man with ink on his fingers and past Brandt with his merchant’s chain, and stopped at the foot of Councillor Marren’s chair. And he pulled himself up by the leg of it, and stood, wobbling, holding on with both hands, and looked up at her.

She looked down at him.

He let go of the chair with one hand, reached up, and put his palm flat against her cheek. The way he does. As though he were checking she was still there.

* * *

I don’t know what happened to Councillor Marren’s face then. I wasn’t close enough to see properly, and she turned away toward the window almost at once. But I saw her hand come up and close very gently over his, over the small hand on her cheek, and stay there.

”My husband,” she said, after a while, toward the window, toward the stone, ”used to do that. When I’d been crying and didn’t want him to know. He’d put his hand on my face as though he were checking. Still there, Agnes? Every time.” Her voice didn’t shake. ”His name is on the north side. Fourth row from the top. I filled the jar this morning.”

Nobody at the table moved.

”I read the grain twice,” said Councillor Marren. ”In the letter. Because it was the first time in twenty years anyone had offered me something I wanted. Not something I needed. Something I wanted. And I wanted it so badly that I read it twice so I wouldn’t have to read the rest.” She looked down at my son. ”You will not want, for you will not want.”

She was quiet a moment.

”I don’t think I’d like that,” she said. ”I’ve wanted him back every day for twenty years. It’s the only thing I’ve got left of him. I’m not giving it to a priest at the end of a harbor wall for a cheap sack of barley.”

* * *

She took my son’s hand off her cheek, very gently, and held it, and looked down the table at Seraphina.

”You said Greykeep isn’t asking for anything.”

”Nothing.”

”Then I’ll ask you something,” said Councillor Marren. ”Greykeep sent us advice for twenty years. Good advice, I don’t doubt. Letters. Your father-in-law wrote very kind letters. But nobody ever came and stood in this room and asked us what we needed.” She paused. ”Why not?”

Seraphina didn’t look away.

”I don’t know,” she said. ”I wasn’t there. But I think they should have. I think it was wrong that they didn’t, and I’m sorry, and so is my husband’s father; he said so at his own gate on Thursday to your courier.” She drew a breath. ”I’m not going to offer you anything instead. Not grain, not gold, not a promise. If I did that, I’d just be another letter. I’m only telling you that you’re right, and that the asking’s late, and that it’s yours now. All of it. The harbor and the yes and the no.”

* * *

The vote took a long time.

They didn’t ask us to leave. I don’t think it occurred to them. They talked, all seven, for most of an hour, low and fast, in the clipped Amberlay way of talking that drops the ends of words. Brandt talked about the harbor fees. The young man with ink on his fingers, whose name was Coyle and who kept the school accounts, talked about the new roof. A woman with a farmer’s hands talked about the barley, and how thin it had come in the last three autumns, and how Kethran grain at the Cardle price would mean nobody in Amberlay would go hungry in winter for the first time since the war.

Seraphina didn’t say anything. She sat with her hands flat on the table the whole time. I don’t think she moved them once.

I didn’t say anything either. I stood at the back by the door and, at some point, Councillor Marren handed my son back down the side of the room from councillor to councillor, like a parcel, until he reached me. He was asleep by the time he got there.

* * *

At last Councillor Marren put her hand flat on the table, the way Seraphina had.

”Six to one,” she said. ”Brandt against. Brandt, you’ll put your reasons in the book.”

”I will,” said Brandt. He looked at Seraphina, and his face was red, but not angry anymore. ”My reasons are the harbor fees. They’d have paid for the school for ten years. I don’t believe in your oath, Lady. I believe in the fees.” He paused. ”I’ll put that in the book. And I’ll also put that you sat there for an hour with your hands on the table and didn’t do anything. I’ll put that in too.”

”Thank you,” said Seraphina.

”Six to one,” said Councillor Marren again. ”We won’t swear.” She folded her hands. ”But we said yes to that ship a week ago, and a yes deserves an answer to its face, not a note left on the quay. So tomorrow at dusk we’ll go down to the harbor as we said we would. All seven. To the end of the wall.” She looked at Seraphina. ”And we’ll say no. To the priests. In front of their lamps.”

Seraphina went very still.

”That’s dangerous,” she said.

”Yes,” said Councillor Marren. ”So we’re not going alone. You asked who’d be there to witness.” She looked out the window, at the stone, at the woman in black still standing beside it with her basket. ”Everyone will be there. Every widow. Every child from the new school. Every farmer who’d have eaten that barley. If we’re going to say no for Amberlay, Amberlay can come and watch us do it.”

* * *

”Will Greykeep stand with you?” said Seraphina. ”If you ask?”

Councillor Marren looked at her for a long moment. Then she looked down the length of the room at me, at the back, with my son asleep on my shoulder and my mouth shut tight.

”No,” she said. ”Thank you. Not this time. This is Amberlay’s no.” The corner of her mouth moved. ”You’ve told us what the words mean. We’ll do the rest ourselves. If you stood behind us at the harbor, the priests would say we’d been made to. And they’d be half right.” She stood up. ”Go home, Seraphina of Concordia and Greykeep. Take your husband. He’s been very good.”

* * *

We walked out across the square past the stone.

The woman in black with the basket had gone. The jar of white flowers was still there at the foot of it. Seraphina stopped beside it, and looked up at the north side, and found the fourth row from the top, and stood there.

I didn’t know which name it was. I didn’t ask.

She stood there for a long time. Then she took my free hand, and held it, and turned to me.

”You can talk now,” she said.

I opened my mouth.

I’d had about four hundred things to say since noon. I’d been saving them. Every one of them had been very important at the time. And I stood there in the square at Amberlay beside the stone with my son asleep on my shoulder and my wife holding my hand, and found I didn’t want to say any of them.

”Hm,” I said.

Seraphina laughed out loud, the first time all day. It rang off the council hall windows.

”Hm,” she agreed. And folded us home.

* * *

From Mary’s book, Saturday:

Seraphina folded to Amberlay. She went once when she was twelve, with Io, for the stone’s tenth year. She remembered the well with the green roof.

Councillor Marren met them at the door alone. She asked Seraphina the three questions. She said she’s seventy-one and has been practicing.

Seraphina put both hands flat on the table and left them there. For the whole hour. Nothing happened. Brandt took his hand off the arm of his chair.

She read Iselle’s paper. The first lines the priests never write down. You will not want, for you will not want. Seraphina said: It takes the wanting.

She asked: Who in Amberlay will be there to see you promise? Councillor Marren said: Nobody.

The baby got down. He went to Councillor Marren and put his hand on her cheek. Her husband used to do that. Still there, Agnes. His name is on the north side, fourth row from the top.

She said: I’ve wanted him back every day for twenty years. I’m not giving it to a priest for a cheap sack of barley.

Six to one. Brandt against, for the harbor fees. He’ll put in the book that she sat for an hour with her hands on the table and didn’t do anything.

Tomorrow at dusk the council will go down to the harbor and say no to the priests’ faces. All of Amberlay will be there to witness. Councillor Marren said Greykeep is not to come. This is Amberlay’s no.

Garrick didn’t say a word the whole time. Seraphina says it’s the bravest thing she’s ever seen him do. Afterward he said Hm.

And under that, in a small, cramped, very old-fashioned hand, all its letters looped and joined in the style that hasn’t been taught in schools for fifty years, the hand of a woman who learned to write before the war and never saw any reason to change:

Agnes Marren, eldest of the council of Amberlay. Written at my own table and sent up with Odile, because I don’t go traveling at my age. I’d like it noted that I asked the three questions at my own door for the first time today, and got them wrong, and she answered anyway. That a child put his hand on my face the way my Edwin used to, and I’d forgotten anyone else’s hand could feel like that. That I’ve voted on this council for thirty years, and today was the first vote I was proud of. And that I still want him back, every day, and I’m keeping it.
