The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

She told him on the ninth day.

She had been managing it since the hollow ground since the field collapse and the Blood Apex’s forced activation at near depletion and the bond’s incandescent run through the northern anchor stone. The depletion had triggered a response that was standard vampire biology accelerated by the Blood Apex concentration: the hunger increased in proportion to the energy expended, and the recovery to baseline concentration required feeding at a level that she had not needed since the early decades of her life when the Blood Apex was still developing toward its full capacity.

She had been managing it with the careful, private discipline of someone who had been managing it for a hundred and twelve years and had very effective management strategies.

The management strategies were becoming insufficient.

She noticed it first in the training yard on the fourth morning standing at the eastern perimeter with Axel during the dawn patrol, close enough that the bond was running at its easy daily warmth, and feeling the hunger spike with a specificity that the management strategies required more active work to contain than they had the day before.

The hunger was not for blood in the generalized sense. The Blood Apex didn’t work that way, it was too concentrated, too specific in its requirements, to respond to generalized feeding the way ordinary vampire hunger responded. What the Blood Apex required was power-adjacent sustenance. Old blood. Strong blood. The blood of something with enough supernatural concentration to register as meaningful to a system calibrated for the highest concentration in the regional supernatural ecosystem.

The bond complicated this in ways she had not fully anticipated.

The completed bond had done something to the Blood Apex’s feeding requirements that the historical records hadn’t described because the historical records were based on Blood Apex individuals who had not completed bonds with Alpha wolves. The bond had linked her concentration to his. Not in the way that made his blood a requirement the bond wasn’t a feeding mechanism, that was not how bond biology worked in either tradition. But the link meant that the Blood Apex’s hunger was now oriented in his direction in a way that it hadn’t been before the completion, the way a compass was oriented even when you weren’t navigating.

She had been managing it.

By the ninth day the management was requiring most of her active attention during the hours they spent in close proximity.

She told him in the east wing room, late, after the war room lamp had burned low and they had come here in the natural migration that their evenings had developed. He was in the chair by the small table. She was at the window not looking at the forest, looking at the lamp, which was unusual enough that he had already registered it as significant by the time she turned.

”There’s something I need to tell you about the hunger,” she said.

He looked at her steadily. ”Tell me.”

She told him. The post-depletion increase. The Blood Apex’s specific requirements and why generalized feeding wasn’t addressing them. The bond’s orientation effect and what it meant for the hunger’s direction. She told it with the clinical precision she used for operational information because clinical precision was the tool she had available for things that were also personal and she had learned that applying it didn’t make the personal component less present, it just gave it a container.

He listened the way he always listened completely, without interrupting, without the performance of reaction.

When she finished he was quiet for a moment.

”How long have you been managing it,” he said.

”Since the hollow ground.”

”That’s three weeks.”

”Yes.”

”On your own.”

She met his eyes. ”I didn’t know how to tell you. The operational situation was....”

”Reyna.” He said her name with the specific quality he used when he was saying something important and wanted the name to carry the weight of his full attention alongside the words. ”Three weeks.”

She held his gaze. ”I know.”

He was quiet again. Not processing, he had processed it during her account. Something else. The specific, contained quality of someone sitting with what it meant that a person they were bonded to had been carrying something for three weeks because they hadn’t known how to say it.

”What do you need,” he said.

”I need to feed,” she said. ”At a level that addresses the Blood Apex’s specific requirements. Which means....” She paused. ”Strong blood. Power adjacent. The clan can source it there are individuals within Voss clan networks who provide willingly and whose bloodlines carry sufficient concentration to register as meaningful.” She looked at the window. ”I’ve been hesitant to arrange it because the logistics require communication with the estate and the estate’s communication channels are not fully secured against Hollow monitoring. And because....” She stopped.

”Because,” he said.

She looked at him. The deep-water eyes, fully surface. The honest expression, the one she couldn’t fully manage even when she was managing everything else. ”Because the bond’s orientation means that feeding from any other source feels wrong is not the right word. Discordant. The Bond Apex’s hunger is oriented toward you and feeding from another direction produces a feedback that the hunger doesn’t quiet properly afterward.” She looked at the lamp. ”I didn’t want to tell you that because it implies something about the bond’s development that I’m not sure either of us is ready to address directly.”

The room was very quiet.

He looked at her for a long moment. He thought about the bond’s completion and about what Reyna was describing, the hunger oriented toward him, the discordance of feeding from another direction and he thought about the founding Alphas’ documentation and what Malka had described as the convergence’s full implications and whether those implications had been more specific than the document had articulated.

”The bond is designed for this,” he said slowly. ”It’s not a side effect. The convergence of natures it runs both ways. The Warden Mark is the wolf incorporating vampire properties. The hunger’s orientation is the vampire incorporating wolf properties.” He looked at her. ”The pack bond. Wolves feed their pack’s strength from their own. The Alpha’s energy sustains the bond’s members in specific ways.” He paused. ”The Blood Apex is responding to the completed bond the same way a pack member responds to Alpha proximity. It’s recognizing the bond as its primary sustenance source.”

She looked at him.

”The records,” she said carefully. ”The founding Alphas documented the Warden Mark but not this.”

”They documented the wolf-side development,” he said. ”They may not have had access to the vampire-side experience.” He held her gaze. ”Or they did and Malka hasn’t translated that section yet.”

She was very still.

”There’s a section she hasn’t translated,” she said.

”There’s always a section she hasn’t translated,” he said. ”She translates them when the situation requires them.”

The specific almost humor crossed her face the dry edge that was affectionate, that he had learned to catch because it was brief and genuine and entirely hers. Then it settled into something more serious.

”What are you saying,” she said.

”I’m saying that what you’re experiencing is the convergence developing in you the same way the mark is developing in me.” He looked at her steadily. ”And that the bond’s orientation, the hunger toward me rather than another source is probably not a complication. It’s probably the mechanism.” He paused. ”Which means we need to talk to Malka.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

”Tomorrow,” he said. ”Tonight....” He stood. He crossed the room. He stood in front of her at the window and put his hand against her face the way he had been putting his hand against her face and she leaned into it with the involuntary quality she could never quite manage to manage. ”Tonight you tell me how close the hunger is to the ceiling you’ve been managing it against.”

She looked up at him.

”Close,” she said quietly.

He looked at her. At the deep-water eyes and the particular quality of her this close the cold clean scent that was hers, the Blood Apex at eighty three percent recovery, the hunger she had been managing for three weeks oriented through the bond toward the specific frequency of him.

”Okay,” he said.

He said it with the same uncomplicated quality she had given it to him. The same unqualified assent. The same weight of someone who had decided that the careful managed distance was not what this moment required.

She looked at him.

The lamp burned low.

Outside the east wing window the forest stood in its patient dark and the boundary stones held their ancient positions and somewhere in the regional supernatural ecosystem the Hollow was building toward a third attempt with a redesigned containment and a reconfigured artifact set and an ideology that had survived two failures and was deciding what it was willing to do to ensure the third one wasn’t.

Inside the east wing room, the hunger and the Warden Mark and the bond that had produced both of them were becoming, incrementally and completely, what the founding Alphas had built the contingency for.

Something more than what either of them had been.

Something that didn’t have a name yet.

But that was, unmistakably and without apology, real.
