The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

It began with the wolves.

Not with Reyna, not with the bond, not with anything that had a clear supernatural explanation that could be filed under known categories and managed accordingly. It began with the pack with the specific, animal sensitivity of three hundred wolves living in close proximity to a completed supernatural bond and registering something that their biology hadn’t encountered before and didn’t have language for.

Axel noticed it first in the training yard on the morning of the second day after the industrial site rescue.

He had gone out at six to run the dawn patrol himself something he had been doing every third day since the eastern situation escalated, the physical presence of the Alpha on the perimeter communicating things to the pack that administrative authority couldn’t communicate. He was crossing the training yard on the way to the eastern tree line when three of the younger wolves in the early training rotation stopped what they were doing and turned toward him simultaneously.

Not in the way they turned when the Alpha crossed their space, the instinctive hierarchy recognition, the brief reorientation that young pack members showed in the presence of dominant authority. Something different from that. They turned and held, all three of them, with the particular arrested attention of animals that had registered a signal they couldn’t categorize and were waiting for the signal to resolve into something their instincts could process.

He stopped.

He looked at them.

They looked at him with the specific expression that wolves in human form wore when something was happening in their animal nature that the human layer hadn’t caught up to yet.

”What is it?” he said.

The youngest of the three, a nineteen year old named Sev who had been with the pack for two years and had never given Axel any reason to think of him as particularly sensitive said: ”You smell different, Alpha.”

Axel was quiet for a moment. ”Different how.”

Sev looked uncomfortable in the way that young wolves looked uncomfortable when they were being accurate about something they suspected they shouldn’t be accurate about. ”Cold,” he said. ”Clean cold. Like.....” He stopped.

”Like the corridor,” the second one said.

Axel looked at them for another moment. Then he thanked them and continued to the eastern tree line and ran his patrol with the additional information sitting in the back of his mind where he put things that required processing before they could become operational.

He came back through the packhouse to wash up before the morning briefing and stopped at the bathroom mirror.

He looked at his reflection for a long time.

He had looked at his reflection every day for twenty-nine years and knew it the way you knew something you had never particularly thought about completely and without attention. The grey eyes. The particular set of his jaw. The scar along his left temple from a border fight when he was twenty-two.

The scar was different.

Not gone, still there, still the same white line it had been for seven years. But at its edges something had changed. The skin around it had a slightly different quality in the light harder to define than color, more a quality of depth, as if the scar tissue had been replaced by something that was still skin but was also, at some level below visual resolution, something slightly else.

He touched it.

Cold.

Not the temperature of his skin in a cool room. Cold in the specific way that Reyna was cold, the clean, charged cold that was her particular quality, the cold that young Eli Farrow had described as like the air before a storm, but not the same. That cold, living in the skin along his left temple.

He went to find her.

She was awake, eighteen hours of the twenty four he had given her, which was close enough to the number given what the bond was telling him about her concentration level. Seventy one percent. Better than last night. Still below the eighty-something percent that was her baseline when she was functioning without operational drain.

She was reading in the east wing room when he came in. She looked up and registered something in his face immediately the rapid assessment, the read that was faster now than it had been in the early weeks, the bond adding a layer to the information her eyes collected.

”Something happened,” she said.

He sat down across from her. He told her about the training yard Sev and the other two, the cold clean smell, the arrested attention of wolves registering something they didn’t have a category for. He told her about the bathroom mirror and the scar’s edges. He told her what he had felt when he touched it.

She listened without interrupting. When he finished she set the book down completely and looked at him with an expression that was not surprise, it was the expression of someone who had been watching a development approach and has just been told it has arrived.

”It started before the industrial site,” she said. ”I’ve been watching it since the hollow ground.” She paused. ”I didn’t say anything because I wasn’t certain of the interpretation and because you had enough to manage without adding an uncertain data point.”

He looked at her. ”Tell me the interpretation now.”

She looked at her hands for a moment. The specific pause of honest accounting. Then: ”The bond’s completion produces changes in both parties. I knew that in the abstract the historical records describe it as a convergence of natures. What I didn’t know was the specific mechanism or the timeline because it’s never happened before in this configuration.” She met his eyes. ”What I’ve been watching is your wolf nature beginning to incorporate elements of the Blood Apex. Not replacing your nature. Incorporating. The way an alloy incorporates two metals still recognizably both things, but with properties that neither had alone.”

He was quiet for a moment. ”The cold the young wolves smell.”

”The Blood Apex leaves a signature. Temperature, scent, the specific electromagnetic quality that old vampires carry as a baseline. You’re developing a version of that signature alongside your own.” She looked at him steadily. ”It’s why the pack has been reorienting around you differently in the last few days. They can feel it in their animal nature before they can articulate it. Something in you that wasn’t there before.”

”What else is coming,” he said.

”I don’t know the full scope.” She said it honestly, without the management she sometimes applied to uncertainty when she thought the uncertainty would alarm him unnecessarily. ”The records describe enhanced sensory range beyond standard Alpha capacity. Resistance to certain categories of supernatural attack that wolves are normally vulnerable to. And....” She paused. ”The ability to affect the bond’s frequency externally. To project it.”

He looked at her. ”What does that mean.”

”It means the warmth you feel at your wrist the bond’s signal you’ll be able to project that outward. Not far. Not as a weapon.” She paused again, choosing the words carefully. ”As a stabilizing field. A small-radius area around you where the bond’s completed frequency runs as a baseline.” She looked at him. ”The Hollow’s ritual structure operates on a frequency that the bond disrupts. If you can project the bond’s field....”

”The ritual can’t activate within the radius,” he said.

”Yes.”

He sat with that for a long moment. He thought about the hollow ground and the thirty seconds and the incandescent spike and what Reyna had done with the bond’s interference in the suppression field’s lower registers. He thought about it as a mobile, deployable version of what the boundary stones had been built to do a counter frequency to ritual architecture carried in his own body.

”How far along is the development?” he asked.

”Far enough to be detectable to sensitive wolves. Not far enough to be reliable.” She held his gaze. ”It needs to develop at its own rate. Trying to accelerate it would be like trying to accelerate an alloy’s tempering you’d get something structurally unsound.”

”How long.”

”Days. Maybe less, given the rate I’ve been observing.” She looked at him with the deep water eyes. ”The hollow ground accelerated everything. The bond running at full incandescent capacity through the anchor stone disruption, it compressed a development timeline that might have taken months into something much shorter.”

He nodded slowly. He thought about Sev in the training yard and the cold at his temple and the pack’s subtle reorientation and what three hundred wolves feeling something new in their Alpha did to a community that was already in the process of fracturing.

”The pack is going to feel this before I fully understand it,” he said.

”Yes.”

”That’s either going to hold them or accelerate the fracture.”

”Yes,” she said again. She didn’t pretend otherwise. ”I don’t know which.”

He sat with the uncertainty for the specific amount of time it required. Then he stood. ”I need to speak with Malka before the afternoon address,” he said. ”She needs to hear this from me before she feels it in the common room.”

Reyna looked at him steadily. ”Axel.”

He stopped.

”Whatever it does to the pack....” She paused. ”Whatever this is becoming, it isn’t your fault. You didn’t choose the bond’s developmental effects any more than I chose the Blood Apex.” She held his gaze. ”But it may be the thing that ends the ritual permanently. Which is what we came here for.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

”I know,” he said.

He went to find Malka.
