The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

They were back at the packhouse by midnight.

The injured were in the infirmary nine wolves with varying degrees of contact damage, two clan fighters with worse. The Hollow had pulled out of the corridor completely in the aftermath of the anchor’s destruction, which Cael’s fighters confirmed through a sweep of the full four kilometer length. Not retreated to regroup. Pulled out, with the particular totality of a force that had lost its operational center and needed to rebuild before it could function again.

It wasn’t over. Axel knew that. The Hollow’s leadership was still intact, the artifact collection still largely whole except for the cracked anchor stone. What they had done tonight was deny the ritual its first attempt. Not its only one.

But tonight the corridor was quiet.

He sat in the war room alone for an hour after the debrief, working through the engagement’s documentation while the packhouse settled around him. Outside the eastern window the forest was dark and still and the boundary stones stood in their old positions at the corridor’s edge, unchanged, patient, doing what they had always been doing.

At one in the morning he went to the east wing.

He knocked.

She opened the door. She had cleaned the blood from her face and changed her clothes but she had not slept he hadn’t expected her to. She looked at him with the deep water eyes and stepped back to let him in without asking why he was there, which was how she had always let him in.

He came in and sat on the edge of the chair by the small table. Not at the desk, not in the operational position. The chair by the table where the lamp was, the one he had been sitting in the night he held her hand in the dark.

She sat across from him.

For a while neither of them said anything. The lamp burned between them and outside the window the forest was quiet and the packhouse was quiet and the particular silence that lived between them was the fullest it had ever been weighted with the night’s events, with what she had done at the northern artifact, with what he had felt when her blood hit the ground and the ritual reached for her.

”You let it pull at you,” he said.

”Yes.”

”That was the plan you didn’t tell me.”

She met his eyes. ”If I had told you the ritual was going to draw on the pre-bond, you would have found a different approach.”

”Yes.”

”There wasn’t a different approach.”

He looked at her. He thought about thirty seconds and the incandescent spike in the pre-bond and what depleted felt like from the inside when what was doing the depleting was something designed specifically to consume you. He thought about holding her arms in the hollow ground and the fraying at the edges of her voice.

He thought about being afraid.

”I was afraid,” he said. He said it the way he said things that were simply true without performance, without the particular management he used for difficult admissions. ”When the ground took your blood and the ritual accelerated. I was afraid.”

She looked at him. The expression on her face was the surface-water one, fully present.

”So was I,” she said.

He reached across the table. He didn’t take her hand this time. He put his palm up on the table between them open, offered, the specific gesture of a man who had decided that managed contact was not what this moment required.

She looked at his hand.

Then she put hers in it.

The pre-bond warmth moved between them steady and constant and fuller than it had been before the hollow ground. Something had shifted in it during those thirty seconds. The bond had been used, had been stressed, had been run at its maximum capacity, and had come out the other side not weakened but clarified. Like a muscle after real work more defined, more present, more itself.

They sat at the small table in the lamp-light and held on.

Outside the east wing window the forest stood in its old patient dark, the boundary stones at the corridor’s edge doing what they had always been built to do. Inside the packhouse three hundred wolves and thirty six vampire clan fighters slept the exhausted sleep of people who had gone into a hard thing and come out the other side.

Somewhere in the packhouse Cael Voss sat awake with the particular wakefulness of a father who had watched his daughter do something extraordinary and terrifying and hadn’t been able to stop her, and was still processing what that meant.

At the small table in the east wing room, Axel Bessario and Reyna Voss sat across from each other in the lamplight and didn’t let go.

The night held them.

Eventually later, the lamp burned low and the packhouse quiet complete around them she said, ”The bond is closer.”

”I know,” he said. ”I felt it in the hollow ground.”

”After tonight it won’t take much.”

He looked at her. ”I know that too.”

She looked at their joined hands. Then at his face. The deep-water eyes, fully surface, fully her. ”I’m not afraid of it,” she said. His words, from the east wing room weeks ago. Given back to him now with the particular weight of someone who had meant them then and meant them more now.

He tightened his hand around hers.

”Neither am I,” he said.

The lamp burned.

The forest held its silence.

And between them something that had been building since a dark-eyed vampire walked through the front gate of Ashveil and asked for the Alpha by name settled into the quiet certainty of something that was not going to be stopped by anything the world had remaining to throw at it.

They stayed until dawn.
