The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

She was with her father when Axel found them.

They were in the library, the room that had become Reyna’s space in the packhouse the way the war room had become his, through daily occupation rather than assignment. Cael was standing at the shelves when Axel came to the doorway, examining the spines with the attention of someone who had been in a lot of libraries and had opinions about them. Reyna was at the long table.

The conversation they’d been having stopped when he appeared. Not guiltily. It simply stopped in the way that private conversations stopped when a third person arrived a natural pause, an adjustment.

”Alpha.” Cael turned from the shelves.

Axel looked between them. He looked at Reyna, who looked back at him with an expression that was composed in its surface and complicated underneath, and he understood that whatever they had been discussing before he arrived had been significant.

”There’s something you need to know,” Reyna said.

He came in and sat down.

She told him.

She told him with the same direct economy she had used for everything she had told him since the beginning no preamble, no softening, just the information delivered at the pace it could be absorbed.

She was not simply the Voss King’s daughter.

The Voss bloodline ran through multiple family branches. Cael had siblings, cousins, the extended biological network of a clan that had been propagating for four centuries. The bloodline itself the concentrated power that Axel had smelled on the ridge, that the Hollow’s ritual required was distributed across those branches in varying concentrations. Diluted, in most cases. Manageable.

In Reyna it was not diluted.

There had been a convergence not deliberate, the kind of biological accident that happened rarely and couldn’t be engineered. Her mother’s line, which had carried a recessive concentration of the old bloodline power, had combined with Cael’s direct lineage in a way that produced something the Voss Clan’s records described as a Blood Apex. The full, undiluted concentration of everything the bloodline had been carrying and accumulating for four centuries, present in a single individual.

It had happened once before. In the fifteenth century. The records from that period were incomplete, but what existed described the individual as catastrophically powerful and chronically targeted, and the historical record strongly suggested the targeting had killed them before the power could fully develop.

Reyna had known since she was forty years old.

Cael had known since her birth.

”The Hollow doesn’t want a powerful vampire’s blood for their ritual,” Axel said. He said it slowly, the full shape of it assembling as he spoke. ”They want a Blood Apex.”

”Yes,” Reyna said.

”What does a Blood Apex blood do to the ritual that regular Voss blood doesn’t?”

She looked at him steadily. ”It doesn’t power the ritual. It is the ritual.” She paused. ”The artifacts, the corridor, the boundary stones they’re a frame. A containment and amplification structure. But the energy source, the thing that actually drives the working that requires a concentration of power that exists in maybe one individual per century.” She held his gaze. ”The ritual isn’t designed to shift the regional power balance. It’s designed to transfer the Blood Apex’s power out of the individual carrying it and into the Hollow’s leadership collective.”

The library was very quiet.

Axel sat with that for a moment. ”Transfer,” he said. ”Meaning....”

”Meaning they drain it,” Cael said from the shelves. His voice was flat and controlled and underneath the control was something that was not at all controlled. ”They drain her completely. The Blood Apex power transfers to whoever conducts the ritual.” He looked at the wall. ”And Reyna dies.”

The word landed in the room and stayed there.

Axel looked at her. She looked back at him. He read in her face that she had known this had known the full shape of it, probably for longer than she had known about the Hollow’s specific plans and had come to Ashveil and given him her information and sat across tables from him and held his hand in the dark with this knowledge already inside her.

He was quiet for a long moment.

”Why didn’t you tell me?” he said. His voice was even. He made it even through the particular effort of a man who had been given information that wanted to produce a less even response.

”Because the operational picture was the same either way,” she said. ”The Hollow needed stopping. The boundary stones and the ritual structure needed understanding. What they wanted from me specifically didn’t change any of that.”

”It changes what you’re at risk of.”

”You already knew I was at risk.”

”Not like this.” He held her gaze. ”Not this specifically.”

She looked at him for a long moment. Something moved in her face the surface water expression, the honest one. ”I know,” she said quietly. ”I should have told you sooner. I was...” She stopped. She started again. ”I was afraid that if you knew the full scope of what I was, it would change how you saw the situation. Whether staying was worth the cost to your pack.”

”That’s not your calculation to make,” he said.

”I know that now.”

Cael watched them from across the room with the expression of a man who had come here to reclaim his daughter and had instead found something he hadn’t known to account for. He was quiet for a long moment.

”The pre-bond,” he said finally, to Axel. ”You know what it means. What it would do to her power concentration if it completes.”

”It amplifies it,” Axel said. ”And generates a counter-frequency to the ritual structure.”

Cael nodded slowly. ”It would also make her considerably harder to drain.” He looked at his daughter. ”A completed bond with an Alpha of your bloodline.....” He stopped. Looked at the ceiling briefly. ”Your mother would have had something to say about this.”

”She would have had several things to say about it,” Reyna said.

Something passed between them private, familial, the specific shorthand of two people who shared the weight of someone who wasn’t in the room anymore. Axel watched it and said nothing.

Then Cael looked at him with the deep-water eyes that his daughter had inherited.

”Protect her,” he said. Not as a command. As one powerful person to another, stripped of everything except the essential.

”Yes,” Axel said.

One word. The same certainty he used for everything that was already decided.

Outside, the packhouse moved through its preparation. Wolves and vampires working the same perimeter for the first time in a century, building toward a confrontation in the sealed corridor that would either end the Hollow or end everything else.

And in the library, three people sat with the full weight of what was coming and didn’t look away from any of it.
