The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The pack found out by accident.

Not through Axel, who had been carefully considering how to frame the information and when. Not through Reyna, who had never volunteered more than the operational minimum about herself to anyone in the packhouse except him. It came out the way significant things came out in closed communities sideways, through a gap nobody had thought to cover.

One of the Voss Clan fighters, a lean older vampire named Sable, had been working the perimeter coordination with Petra through the afternoon. They had been doing the careful, professional work of two experienced fighters building a joint operational plan across a significant cultural gap, and somewhere in the third hour of that work, when the formality had reduced to something more functional, Sable had referred to Reyna as the Princess without apparent awareness that the title was new information to the wolf standing beside her.

Petra had not reacted visibly. She was too experienced for visible reactions to things that surprised her. She had completed the perimeter planning and come directly to Axel.

She stood in the war room doorway and said, ”Princess.”

He looked up from the tactical layout he’d been working through with Calla.

”You knew,” Petra said. It wasn’t an accusation. It was the voice of someone calibrating.

”I found out this morning.”

”The pack doesn’t know.”

”The pack is preparing for a corridor engagement in approximately ten hours. I made a decision about sequencing.”

Petra was quiet for a moment. She came fully into the room and closed the door behind her. ”Tell me now,” she said. ”All of it. Because if it comes through the perimeter the same way it came to me, we lose the ground we’ve rebuilt in the last two weeks.”

He told her. The Blood Apex, the ritual’s true design, what it meant for Reyna specifically. He watched Petra’s face as she took it in the small adjustments of a woman absorbing a threat picture that was significantly larger and more specific than she had understood.

When he finished, Petra was quiet for a long moment.

”She came here knowing they wanted to kill her,” she said.

”Yes.”

”She sat in our briefings and ran our eastern patrols and ate Brea’s food knowing that.” Petra looked at the wall. ”And she didn’t ask us for anything.”

”No,” he said. ”She didn’t.”

Another silence. Then Petra said, ”I’ll brief the senior circle before it moves through the rank and file. Give me an hour.”

She left. Axel looked at the tactical layout and thought about Reyna in the east wing, in the library, at the perimeter moving through his packhouse for six weeks with the full weight of her own death sentence carried somewhere internal and unflinching, and not once asking anyone to carry it with her.

He thought about that for a long moment.

Then he went to find her.

She was at the eastern perimeter with two of the Voss Clan fighters, reviewing the corridor approach angles. She registered his arrival without turning, he had noticed she always registered him before he announced himself and finished the point she was making to the two fighters before she looked at him.

He said nothing. He simply looked at her.

She read whatever was in his face and said something quiet to the fighters that dismissed them, and then she turned fully toward him and waited.

”Sable used your title,” he said. ”Petra heard it.”

A small breath. Not quite a sigh. ”I should have told her myself.”

”Yes.” He wasn’t going to pretend otherwise. ”But that’s done. Petra is briefing the senior circle.” He paused. ”How are you?”

She looked at him. It was a question he didn’t often ask he was more naturally oriented toward what needed doing than toward how people were experiencing the doing of it. She knew that about him, which meant she understood what it cost him to ask, which meant she understood what it was actually saying.

”I’m functional,” she said carefully.

”That wasn’t what I asked.”

She looked away, briefly, toward the eastern tree line. The corridor beyond it was quiet in the particular way it had been quiet for the past two hours the specific held breath quiet of a space where something was being prepared. She looked at it with the expression of someone looking at a thing they’ve been moving toward for a long time and have just found within reach.

”I’m afraid,” she said. She said it quietly and without performance, the way she said things she had decided to say honestly. ”Not of dying. Of the ritual working before we can stop it. Of becoming the mechanism for something I’ve spent eleven weeks trying to prevent.” She paused. ”I’m afraid of what it would mean for you.”

He moved a step closer.

”It won’t work,” he said. ”We won’t let it work.”

She looked at him. He looked back. The eastern tree line stood behind her and the corridor lay beyond it and somewhere in the sealed dark of the old forest the Hollow was building toward the moment it had planned for three years.

”No,” she said. ”We won’t.”
