The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

They stood at the hollow ground’s edge together.

The artifacts pulsed with the accelerated activation, the cold blue grey light running through the channels between them in irregular intervals, searching for the thing that would complete the sequence. The ritual was awake but incomplete. A door held open, waiting for someone to walk through it.

Around them the engagement had shifted. The Hollow’s fighters were pulling back from the outer perimeter not retreating in defeat but consolidating, drawing inward toward the hollow ground with the coordinated precision of people executing a contingency plan. They had expected the Alpha to lose control. They hadn’t expected him to pull back from it. The contingency was slower than the primary plan but it was moving.

Axel could feel the charged soil under his boots even now, back in human form. The resistance was still there but different less actively hostile, more simply present, the ground doing what the ground had always been doing since the Hollow built their circle into it.

”The activation sequence,” he said. ”Where is it in the cycle?”

”Sixty percent.” Reyna was reading it the way she read everything with the particular internal sense of a Blood Apex that the ritual had been tuned to find. She could feel its progress the way he could feel his pack’s position. ”They accelerated when my blood hit the soil but they lost momentum when you didn’t complete the trigger. It’s holding at sixty.”

”What closes it down?”

”Disrupting the northern artifact. That’s the sequence anchor all the other stones run off its signal. Break the anchor and the activation collapses.” She looked at the circle. ”But the northern artifact is inside the charged ring. A wolf can’t reach it without the ground working against them.”

”Can you reach it?”

”I can reach it.” She looked at him steadily. ”But the moment I cross the circle’s edge, the ritual registers my presence and accelerates. I have approximately thirty seconds before the activation reaches the point where my proximity alone begins to complete it whether I cooperate or not.”

”Thirty seconds to break the anchor.”

”Yes.”

He looked at the northern artifact thirty meters across the hollow ground, at the far edge of the circle. He looked at the consolidating Hollow fighters around the perimeter, twelve of them now, positioned to prevent exactly what they were planning.

He looked at Reyna.

”I clear you a path,” he said. ”You go straight to the anchor. Thirty seconds.”

”The charged ground...”

”Will slow me down but not stop me.” He had already proven that when the wolf pushed through it. The human form was more vulnerable but more precise. ”I can manage thirty seconds on charged soil.”

She looked at him with the assessment she brought to plans she was evaluating for structural flaws. She found the same flaw he had found and was setting aside.

”If you’re compromised by the ground before I break the anchor—”

”Then you break the anchor anyway and deal with what comes after.” He held her gaze. ”That’s the plan, Reyna. Tell me you understand the plan.”

She looked at him for one more second.

”I understand the plan,” she said.

He moved first.

He went left along the circle’s edge, drawing the consolidated Hollow fighters toward him not charging the circle, not giving them the trigger they wanted, just moving with enough purpose and threat that the trained response of anyone guarding a position was to orient toward him. Six of the twelve shifted his direction.

Petra hit the right flank from the tree line at the same moment, she had been watching, reading the geometry, waiting for his move with the fourteen years of working alongside him that meant she didn’t need the radio call. Her team drove into the six remaining Hollow fighters with controlled violence that occupied them completely.

Reyna went.

He saw her cross the circle’s edge in his peripheral vision and felt it in the pre bond simultaneously the spike of the ritual’s recognition, the acceleration Reyna had predicted, the thirty-second clock beginning.

He pushed through the charged soil toward the northern end of the circle.

The ground worked against him immediately not the violent resistance of the wolf-form push, but something more targeted. The charged field finding the specific frequency of his Alpha nature and pressing against it, trying to compromise his coherence the way cold tried to compromise warmth. He felt it in his joints, in the particular heaviness of each step, in the way his vision at the edges went slightly uncertain.

He kept moving.

Reyna reached the northern artifact at the fifteen-second mark.

He saw her put both hands on it and he saw the artifact respond to the Blood Apex contact, the glow spiking, the ritual’s acceleration jumping forward as the sequence registered what it had been reaching for.

Twenty seconds.

She held on.

He understood what she was doing. The ritual was pulling at her drawing her power toward the activation with the specific hunger of something that had been built to consume exactly what she was. She was letting it pull, letting the ritual reach into the Blood Apex connection, letting the sequence draw in what it thought it needed.

And feeding it something it couldn’t process.

The pre bond.

He felt it the moment she opened the connection between them into the ritual’s pull, the warmth at his wrist going incandescent, the bond’s partial structure running into the activation sequence like a key into a lock that wasn’t built for it. The ritual pulled at the pre-bond’s energy and found it incompatible at the fundamental level two supernatural structures built on entirely different principles, meeting and finding each other unreadable.

Twenty-five seconds.

The northern artifact cracked.

Not dramatically, a single fracture line running from the base to the crown of the stone, and then the light in it going out, and then the channel running from the northern anchor to the adjacent stones going dark, and then the sequence collapse running through the circle like a current finding a broken circuit.

The hollow ground went dark.

The glow died in the channels. The artifacts stood silent and cold. The activated sequence unwound itself with the particular graceless speed of a structure losing its load bearing point, and the charged quality of the soil under Axel’s boots faded from active resistance to simple ground.

He reached Reyna at the northern artifact in the same moment the sequence completed its collapse.

She was still standing. Her hands had come off the stone when it cracked and she had stepped back with the controlled movement of someone managing significant physical cost. Her nose was bleeding again both nostrils, the Blood Apex responding to the ritual’s forcible attempt to access her power. Her face was pale in a way that went past her normal pallor.

He caught her before she decided to go anywhere.

She didn’t resist being caught, which told him more about the cost than anything visible did. She held onto his arm with both hands and breathed and he felt the pre bond between them resettling into its normal frequency the incandescent spike fading back to the steady wrist-warmth he had come to rely on as a constant.

”The anchor’s broken,” she said. Her voice was steady. Slightly frayed at the edges.

”I know. I was here.”

”The Hollow....”

”Petra’s handling the Hollow.” He looked at her. ”Are you hurt.”

”I’m functional.”

”That’s not what I asked.”

She met his eyes. ”I’m not hurt,” she said. ”I’m depleted. There’s a difference.”

He believed her because she had never lied to him about operational realities and because he could feel the truth of it through the bond not injury, but the specific exhaustion of someone who had let something pull at them from the inside and had held the line against it.

Around them the engagement was concluding. Without the ritual’s active structure, the Hollow’s tactical cohesion was fracturing fighters pulling back into the corridor’s dark, the coordinated precision of a group executing a plan dissolving into the less coordinated reality of a group whose plan had failed. The clan fighters and the pack wolves were holding the ground without needing direction.

They had won the hollow ground.

Axel kept his hands on Reyna’s arms and looked at her face and let himself feel, briefly and without management, the full weight of how close the thirty seconds had been.

Then he breathed it out and got back to work.
