The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Dawn came slowly.

The kind of dawn that arrived without announcement grey light building at the eastern edges of the sky by degrees, the dark giving way not all at once but in the gradual, reluctant way of something that had decided to let go rather than been forced to. Axel watched it come through the east wing window, Reyna’s hand still in his, both of them having sat through the remaining hours of the night without sleeping and without needing to explain why.

At some point the lamp had gone out.

They hadn’t replaced it. The darkness had been comfortable in the specific way that darkness was comfortable when you were not alone in it, and they had stayed in it until the grey light from the window made it unnecessary.

He became aware of the change gradually.

It started as warmth not the pre bond’s familiar wrist warmth, which had been a constant for weeks. Something broader than that. Something that moved through more of him than a single point of contact. He registered it and didn’t immediately name it, the way you registered a change in atmospheric pressure before you identified it as the precursor to weather.

Reyna felt it at the same moment. He knew because her hand tightened in his not gripping, just present in a fuller way than it had been. She looked at him across the small table in the grey dawn light and what was in her face was not alarm.

It was recognition.

”The bond,” she said quietly.

”Yes.”

Not a question from either of them. The hollow ground had done what Malka’s records had described and what both of them had understood was coming since the night in the east wing room when they sat across the lamplight and said they were not afraid. The stress of the ritual pull, the pre-bond running at full capacity to disrupt the activation sequence, the thirty seconds of incandescent connection through the northern artifact the bond had moved through the threshold they had been approaching for weeks and had done it on its own schedule, as it had always been going to.

It was done.

He felt it in the quality of the warmth not the pre bond’s questioning frequency, not the signal of something still forming. Something complete. Settled. The specific fullness of a connection that had found its final form and was now simply what it was, permanent and present.

He felt her.

Not her thoughts, nothing that articulate. But her state. Her physical condition, her emotional temperature, the particular quality of her presence at this specific moment. It was like developing a new sense that had no reference point in his existing experience information arriving through a channel that hadn’t existed yesterday, carrying data he didn’t have language for yet.

She was exhausted. She was relieved. She was afraid of something she hadn’t said.

He looked at her across the table.

”What are you afraid of?” he said.

She looked at him. He watched her register that he had accessed something through the bond she hadn’t said aloud, the small recalibration of someone adjusting to a new level of transparency.

”That it changes how you see me,” she said. ”That the bond’s pull becomes indistinguishable from the real thing and neither of us can tell the difference anymore.”

He was quiet for a moment.

”I knew what this was before the bond completed,” he said. ”In the war room, at the ridge, in the library at midnight. Before the wrist-warmth and before the hollow ground.” He held her gaze. ”The bond didn’t create it. It documented it.”

She looked at him with the deep-water eyes. Fully surface. Fully present.

”I know,” she said. Quietly. Like something set down.

He stood and she stood and the space between them was the smallest it had ever been not the managed distance of the war room table or the careful proximity of the forest trail. Just two people standing in a grey dawn in a small room with a completed bond between them and no remaining reason for the distance.

He put his hand against her face.

She turned into it a small motion, involuntary, the kind of thing the body did before the mind had time to curate it. Her eyes closed briefly.

He kissed her.

Not urgently. Not with the compressed force of something that had been held back too long and was finally releasing. Quietly. The way the dawn was coming by degrees, without announcement, with the full weight of something that had decided to simply be what it was.

She kissed him back with the same quality.

Outside the east wing window the light continued to build.

The forest registered it in the way the forest registered things that were significant in its old, root deep way a stillness that was different from ordinary stillness, a held quality in the air at the corridor boundary, the boundary stones standing in their ancient positions with the particular settled presence of things that had just completed a purpose they had been built for.

When they separated he kept his hand against her face and she kept her eyes on his and neither of them spoke because there wasn’t anything that words could add to what had just happened.

Then the radio on the east wing table crackled.

Petra’s voice, controlled and immediate. ”Alpha. Eastern perimeter. You need to come.”

He looked at Reyna. She was already straightening the operational composure sliding back into place with the practiced ease of someone who had learned to move between these registers.

He picked up the radio.

”On my way,” he said.

They went out together into the grey packhouse morning.
