The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Axel had been moving through the forest for forty minutes when the bond flared.

Not the steady warmth he had been tracking since they left the packhouse, the compass-point orientation that had been guiding the approach since the planning in the war room two hours ago. Something different. A spike, sudden and full and unmistakably her, pushing through the bond at full completed intensity for one clear moment before it settled back into the steady signal.

She was close. She was awake. She was doing something.

He adjusted the approach vector by fifteen degrees and increased pace.

Behind him the rescue formation moved with him, twelve wolves from Ashveil’s senior warrior roster and eight of Cael’s clan fighters, moving through the night forest at the particular coordinated speed of a mixed force that had done three days of joint operations and had learned each other’s rhythm well enough to move without collision in the dark. Cael had wanted to come personally. Axel had looked at him across the war room table and said your presence escalates the clan politics of this beyond what the situation needs and the King had looked at him for a long moment and conceded the point with the specific difficulty of a man who knew the argument was correct and hated it.

Petra was at the packhouse managing the eastern perimeter. Castor Vale had his Halvern fighters covering the logging road approach from the north. The industrial site had three access points according to the clan’s documentation main entrance on the eastern road, a secondary loading entrance on the north face, and a ventilation access on the south side that was technically not an entrance but was the kind of thing that people who needed to not use the main entrance used.

Axel was going through the north face.

The plan was straightforward in the way that plans under time pressure were straightforward not elegant, not minimally violent, but clear. The clan fighters would hit the main entrance as a diversion. The wolves would breach the north face. He would go for Reyna with four warriors while the remaining eight held the outer positions and prevented reinforcement from the Hollow operatives that Cael’s intelligence suggested were staged in the site’s outer buildings.

The plan lasted until they reached the site’s outer perimeter and the bond flared again.

Not a gentle flare this time. Not the single spike of the forest approach. Something sustained and building, the bond running at full intensity with the particular quality he had felt once before at the hollow ground, when Reyna opened the connection into the ritual’s pull and the warmth had gone incandescent. He recognized it and went still for one second and in that second the night on the other side of the industrial site’s north wall lit up.

Blue-white light, visible even through the corrugated metal of the building’s walls. Brief. Maybe three seconds. Then gone.

He looked at the clan fighter beside him, an older man named Ren who had been with the Voss Clan for eighty years and had the expression of someone who had just seen something he had heard described in clan records and hadn’t expected to see in his lifetime.

”Blood Apex at full release,” Ren said quietly. ”She broke the containment herself.”

Axel was already moving.

He hit the north face at speed, not bothering with the planned entry point the corrugated panel beside the loading door came off the frame with the force of an Alpha wolf at full extension, and he went through the gap before the metal finished moving. The four warriors came through behind him.

The inner corridor of the industrial site was dark and smelled of concrete dust and old machine oil and something else the charged, specific smell of a ritual architecture recently activated and then abruptly disrupted, the ozone-adjacent quality that the hollow ground had carried during the anchor stone’s collapse.

He followed the bond.

The inner chamber was at the corridor’s end a set of double doors, industrial weight, which were open when he reached them. Open and partially off one hinge, which told its own story about how they had been opened.

He went through.

The chamber was in the aftermath of something. Four Hollow operatives in various states of incapacitation, two at the far wall, one near the artifact arrangement, one near the door who was conscious and attempting to stand. Axel put the last one back down without breaking stride and kept moving.

The artifacts stood in their circle in the chamber’s center. Eleven stones, intact, the reconfiguration the operative had been working on still visible in the adjusted positioning. The northern stone was cracked a fresh crack, jagged and complete, the stone in two pieces on the concrete floor. The suppression field was gone, its absence felt in the specific way that an active supernatural structure’s absence was felt, a return to ordinary air pressure, ordinary sensory input, the removal of something that had been pressing on the edges of his wolf’s awareness since they entered the building.

No Reyna.

He was still standing in the chamber’s center taking inventory when he heard it, the specific sounds of a fight in progress, coming from the corridor he had just come through. Not the corridor from the north face entrance. The southern one. The ventilation access direction.

He went back through the double doors.

The southern corridor was narrower than the northern one, lower-ceilinged, industrial shelving on both walls that reduced the movement space to a single file. At the corridor’s far end where it opened toward the ventilation access, Reyna was fighting three Hollow operatives in the specific confined geometry of a person who had chosen to go through the narrow space rather than around it because around it would have taken longer.

She was winning.

She was winning at sixty-something percent Blood Apex concentration after two hours of controlled depletion and a full-force field collapse, with residual containment effects in her legs that he could see in the slight unevenness of her footwork, fighting three operatives in a space that didn’t give any of them room to use speed effectively and was therefore more dependent on technical precision than raw capacity.

Her technical precision was, as it always was, considerable.

But three was three and the third one had gotten behind her.

Axel covered the corridor in four seconds and the third operative didn’t complete what he had started to do.

Reyna turned. She saw him in the corridor and something moved through her face that wasn’t the surface-water expression and wasn’t the composed professional mask. Something more immediate than either of those. The expression of a person who had spent two hours working a problem alone in a cold chamber and had just had confirmation that the variable they had been relying on had arrived on schedule.

”You’re late,” she said.

”You didn’t leave much for me to do,” he said.

She looked at the operative he had just put down and then at the two she had put down before him and then at him with an expression that was trying to stay composed and was failing at the edges in a way that he had come to recognize as her version of relief.

He crossed the distance between them and put his hands on her face the way he had in the east wing room at dawn and she leaned into it the same way she had then the small involuntary motion, the brief eye closure, the body doing what it did before the mind could curate it.

”Depleted,” she said. Her voice was even. The fraying at its edges was slightly more pronounced than it had been after the hollow ground.

”I know.” He felt it through the bond not critically, not dangerously, but below what she would choose to run at. ”Can you move?”

”I’ve been moving.”

”Can you move quickly.”

”Yes.”

He kept one hand on her arm not supporting her, she didn’t need support, just maintaining the contact that the bond had been reaching for since the spike in the forest and they went back through the southern corridor toward the north face breach.

The outer engagement was concluding when they came through the corrugated panel gap into the night air. The clan fighters had the main entrance held. The Ashveil wolves had the outer buildings’ operatives contained. Castor Vale’s people had the logging road sealed from the north, which meant no Hollow reinforcement had reached the site since the approach began.

Clean. Fast. Exactly as planned except for the part where Reyna had broken her own containment before they reached her, which had compressed the timeline significantly and required the rapid approach adjustment that had sent him through the north face wall at speed rather than through the planned entry point.

He looked at the corrugated panel lying in the gravel.

He would have to explain that to someone eventually.

Cael’s voice came through the radio, the King had been monitoring the approach from the packhouse and his voice had the particular quality of a man who had been told his daughter broke her own containment and lit up a building with Blood Apex release and was currently standing in the building’s north face gap looking functional.

”She’s out,” Axel said into the radio. ”She’s functional. We’re coming back.”

A pause on the radio that carried more information than words would have.

”Good,” Cael said. One word. The King’s version of everything that was in it.

Axel looked at Reyna.

She was looking at the night sky above the industrial site, the first open sky she had seen in four hours, the stars visible through the cloud cover in patches, the forest beyond the site’s perimeter standing dark and patient in the particular way the forest always stood.

She breathed it in.

He watched her breathe it and felt through the bond the specific quality of her state in this moment depleted and steady and present and something else that he recognized because he had felt the same thing himself in the corridor when he came through the double doors and found the chamber empty.

Relief so complete it had briefly resembled something else.

He kept his hand on her arm.

She looked at him.

They stood in the dark outside the building where the Hollow had held her for four hours and intended to drain her completely and neither of them said anything because neither of them needed to. The bond ran between them steady and complete and permanent, carrying everything that words were insufficient for, which was most of what mattered.

Then the radio came alive with Petra’s voice from the eastern perimeter, new Hollow movement at the corridor boundary, the third thing in a night that had already had too many things and Axel answered it and they started moving.

Together.
