The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The rage came from something small.

Not the Hollow’s numbers or the ritual timeline or the weight of what Reyna had told him that morning. Those things produced calculation, cold and focused. What produced the rage was smaller and more specific.

He found it at the dead oak.

He had gone to the corridor boundary alone at dusk a final reconnaissance before the night’s engagement, the kind of solo assessment he preferred to make without observers because what he was actually doing was less tactical than it appeared. He was reading the land. The specific animal intelligence of an Alpha moving through his territory and determining its condition through senses that went beyond the visual.

He found the marker at the base of the split oak.

Not a black stone. A different kind of marker a small object, placed deliberately where Reyna had told him she would look. Where she checked when he left stones for her in the early weeks of their contact. Where she had looked every morning since coming into the packhouse, habit overriding the fact that she was no longer outside the boundary to receive messages.

The object was a piece of the east wing’s window frame.

Splintered wood, painted the same grey as the packhouse’s eastern windows, placed at the base of the old tree with the deliberate precision of a message that wanted to be understood.

They had been inside the packhouse.

Not last night, not during the test engagement. Before that, before the alarm, before the contact, before any of the eastern perimeter had registered anything. They had been inside the boundary, close enough to the packhouse to take a piece of its frame, and they had left it here to tell him that they had.

The rage came then. Not the cold, focusing kind he was built for. The other kind. The hot, sudden, animal kind that came from the specific violation of something that was supposed to be safe his house, his walls, his people sleeping inside those walls while something moved close enough to touch.

He stood at the base of the split oak and breathed through it.

The breathing took longer than it usually did.

He picked up the piece of window frame. He turned it in his hands. He thought about the east wing and about the window that faced the forest Reyna’s window, the one she stood at every morning. He thought about how close something had gotten while she stood at that window looking out at the forest and not knowing it had already been there.

He walked back to the packhouse.

He went to Reyna first. She was in the war room with Cael and two of the Voss fighters, running through the corridor approach for the fourth time. She looked up when he came in. She saw his face and something shifted in hers the rapid assessment, the reading of signals he knew she was faster at than almost anyone.

He set the piece of window frame on the table.

The room went quiet.

Cael looked at it. He looked at Axel. Something moved in the King’s expression that was controlled over something that was not.

”East wing window,” Axel said. His voice was even. The evenness required effort. ”They were inside the boundary. Pre-engagement. We don’t know when.”

Reyna looked at the wood and then looked at him and the expression on her face did something he hadn’t seen it do before. It went briefly, completely open not the surface water expression he had learned to read as her version of vulnerability. Something deeper than that. The expression of a person who has just understood that the thing hunting them came close to someone they cannot afford to lose.

”Axel....”

”I’m fine,” he said. ”The pack is fine. Everyone is accounted for.” He held her gaze. ”But they know our layout. They’ve been inside our perimeter and they know our layout.”

”They were mapping the east wing,” Cael said quietly. ”They know which room she’s in.”

The rage moved through Axel’s chest again cold now, finally cold, settling into the focusing stillness that was actually more dangerous than the hot version because the hot version eventually burned out.

He picked up the wood and put it in his pocket.

He looked around the room. At Cael, at Reyna, at the Voss fighters, at the tactical map on the wall with all its careful lines.

”We move up the timeline,” he said. ”We don’t wait for full dark. We go at dusk when we have some light and they lose some advantage.” He looked at Petra, who had come in behind him. ”Full deployment. Both our people and the clan fighters. Nobody stays at the packhouse except essential personnel and the non-combatants.”

”That leaves the packhouse exposed,” Petra said.

”The packhouse is already exposed. It’s been exposed since before we knew to watch for it.” He looked at the eastern map. ”The only way to protect it now is to end what’s in that corridor before it moves again.”

Silence.

Then Soren said, ”When?”

Axel looked at the window. The light outside was going amber at the edges. Dusk in forty minutes.

”Now,” he said. ”We go now.”

The war room moved.

Outside, the forest held its breath, patient as always, waiting for the thing that had been building since the first night Axel Bessario came back through the gate and felt something old and cold watching from the eastern trees.

The wait was almost over.
