The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Reyna found him at the packhouse steps twenty minutes before deployment.

He was standing alone the particular alone that Alphas occupied even in the middle of organized activity, the eye of the operational storm. Around him the outer yard was controlled motion. Wolves gearing up, clan fighters moving into formation, Petra running final coordination checks with Sable along the eastern perimeter. The machinery of a joint force making itself ready.

He was looking at the forest.

She came to stand beside him and they were quiet together for a moment the specific quiet that had developed between them over weeks, the kind that didn’t require filling.

”My father wants me in the second wave,” she said.

Axel didn’t look at her. ”What do you want?”

”To be in the first.”

He turned then. He looked at her fully, the full, unhurried attention he gave to things that mattered. She was dressed practically as always, dark clothes, nothing that would catch light in the corridor. Her hair pulled back. Her face composed in the way it was composed when she had made decisions and wasn’t second-guessing them.

But underneath the composure, something he had learned to read. The particular tension of someone standing at the intersection of two different versions of themselves.

”Tell me,” he said.

She looked at the forest. ”My father built a world for me,” she said. ”After my mother died he spent forty years constructing the safest possible version of clan life for the thing he had that was most vulnerable. Good intentions.” She paused. ”But a cage built with good intentions is still a cage.” She was quiet for a moment. ”When I left the estate and came here, I thought I was making a strategic decision. I told myself it was about stopping the Hollow. Preventing the war. All of that was true.”

”But.”

”But I also came here because I needed to find out what I was when no one was protecting me.” She looked at him. ”I found out. And now my father is in your packhouse with thirty six fighters and the weight of everything he built around me, and I am standing between the world I came from and the one I’ve been building here and I don’t know how to hold both of them at once.”

He was quiet for a moment.

”You don’t have to,” he said.

She looked at him.

”You don’t have to hold both at once. Your father came here because he loves you. What you found here...” He stopped. Started differently. ”What we found here is real regardless of where you came from. Those two things aren’t in competition unless you make them compete.” He held her gaze steadily. ”You’re not torn between worlds, Reyna. You’re standing in the place where two worlds meet. That’s different.”

She looked at him for a long moment. The deep-water eyes, fully surface. Fully her.

”When did you get wise?” she said. The dry edge in it was affectionate. He had learned to hear the affection underneath her dryness.

”I’ve always been wise,” he said. ”You’ve been too busy being competent to notice.”

Something crossed her face that was almost a smile. It arrived and passed quickly but it was genuine and he caught it and filed it in the same internal place he filed all of her genuine things.

Cael came down the packhouse steps behind them. He stopped when he saw them standing together and looked at them with the particular expression he had been wearing since the library the one that was still processing what his daughter had become in the eleven weeks she had been outside his carefully constructed world.

”Second wave,” he said to Reyna. Firmly.

”First,” she said. Equally firmly.

They looked at each other the specific look of a father and a daughter who were the same person in too many ways for either of them to win arguments against the other efficiently. Axel watched it and stayed out of it, because some things required exactly the space you gave them.

”First wave,” Cael said finally. The concession cost him visibly. ”Beside the Alpha. Not ahead of him.”

Reyna looked at Axel.

”Beside me,” he confirmed.

She nodded once.

Cael looked at Axel over his daughter’s head with the deep-water eyes that had been looking at difficult situations for centuries. He didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to. What his expression said was clear enough.

Bring her back.

Axel held the King’s gaze.

He would.
