The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Cael Voss spent three hours in the war room.

He did not speak much during those three hours. He listened, he read, he asked precise questions when the material required precision, and he was silent when it didn’t. Axel had expected resistance the particular resistance of a powerful man confronting evidence that something he had believed contained had grown past containment on his watch. What he got instead was attention. Complete, uncomfortable, unflinching attention.

The King was not a man who looked away from things that cost him something to look at.

Axel revised his assessment of Cael Voss upward somewhere in the second hour.

By the time they reached the documentation of the artifact collection the pre truce objects that had been conditionally destroyed and hadn’t been, the specific ritual design the Hollow had been building toward, the timeline that put full activation somewhere between forty eight and seventy two hours from now. Cael had gone very still in the way that Reyna went still. The family resemblance was not primarily physical. It was this. The quality of stillness that both of them used when processing something that required their full internal resources.

”Three years,” Cael said. His voice was even. ”They’ve been building this for three years inside the clan’s structure.”

”The documentation supports that timeline.”

”And my intelligence apparatus missed it.”

”They were careful,” Axel said. Not as comfort. As fact.

”They were careful because they knew exactly where my apparatus looked and where it didn’t.” He was quiet for a moment. ”Because they were part of it.”

He said the last sentence with the particular flatness of a man arriving at a conclusion that explained too many other things too neatly. He didn’t elaborate. Axel didn’t ask him to.

Petra came in at ten with a report from the eastern perimeter that required Axel’s attention for twenty minutes three additional Hollow scouts identified at the corridor boundary’s northern junction, holding position rather than advancing. Watching. Axel issued positioning adjustments and sent her back out and returned to the war room to find Cael standing at the map with his hands behind his back and an expression that had moved past assessment into something that looked like decision.

”I have thirty-six clan members in those vehicles,” Cael said when Axel came back in. ”Fighters, most of them. The best I have available on short notice.” He turned from the map. ”I came here to take my daughter home. I understand now that the situation is more relevant than that objective.”

”You’re offering to fight with us.”

”I’m offering to fight the Hollow. The geography happens to place that fight on your territory.” He held Axel’s gaze. ”There’s a distinction. I won’t pretend otherwise.”

It was, Axel thought, an honest way to frame an alliance. Cleaner than the alternatives.

”Thirty-six clan fighters and three hundred pack wolves against sixty to eighty Hollow operatives inside a sealed corridor,” he said. ”Those numbers work if we move before they complete the ritual setup. They don’t work if we wait.”

”Then we don’t wait.”

”My pack will need to work alongside your people. In the dark. In the corridor.” He said it directly, because directness was what the situation required. ”That’s asking a significant amount of people who have spent their lives understanding vampires as the thing on the other side of the boundary.”

”My people will have the same difficulty.” Cael’s voice was dry in a way that was very briefly almost something like humor. ”We are none of us accustomed to this.”

”No,” Axel agreed. ”We’re not.”

He called the senior warrior circle for noon.

The meeting was the hardest thing he had run since coming back to Ashveil harder than the common room confrontation over Reyna, harder than the Council’s morning visit. He stood at the head of the war room table and told his people that thirty six Voss Clan fighters were in the outer yard and that they were going into the corridor together in the next twelve to eighteen hours, and he watched their faces absorb it.

Nobody walked out.

That mattered.

Soren asked three operational questions. Petra asked two. Calla wanted to know the communication protocol between the two groups in the dark of the corridor, which was the right question and one Axel had already been thinking about. Russ said nothing but nodded once, which from Russ was equivalent to a speech.

The meeting ended and the preparation began and the packhouse shifted into the particular gear of a community that had accepted something difficult and was now simply getting on with it.

Axel was crossing the outer yard an hour later when he saw it.

Two of his younger warriors, Breck and a woman named Sola standing near the eastern perimeter with two of the Voss Clan fighters. Not in confrontation. Not in the wary circling of two species that had spent generations on opposite sides of a boundary. Just standing. Talking. The particular halting, careful conversation of people discovering that the thing they had been told to fear was, close up, made of the same materials they were.

He watched it for a moment without being seen.

Then he went to find Reyna.
