The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

It happened in the space between two patrol rotations.

Forty minutes. That was the gap, the specific window between the eastern perimeter’s evening sweep completing and the night rotation taking its positions. Forty minutes that the randomized schedule was supposed to prevent from being predictable and that Daren’s network had apparently mapped anyway, through the contacts inside the pack that Renn had named and Axel had not yet had time to fully neutralize.

He had not moved fast enough.

That was the thing he would carry afterward not guilt exactly, because guilt required believing he should have known something he hadn’t known, and he had moved as fast as the information allowed. But the weight of the forty minutes sat differently than guilt. More specific. The particular cost of a gap he had been in the process of closing when it was used, like a door he had his hand on that someone had already walked through.

He had been thirty minutes from closing the admin channel when Sable’s call came in.

Thirty minutes.

Reyna had gone to the eastern perimeter at dusk.

Not alone, she had taken two of her father’s fighters with her, a routine check of the boundary stone alignment that Cael had requested after the hollow ground engagement. The stones had behaved unusually during the ritual disruption and the clan’s understanding of the boundary architecture was more technical than anything in Ashveil’s records. The request was legitimate. It was coordinated with Petra. It was documented in the joint operational log that the packhouse had been maintaining since Cael’s convoy arrived three days ago. It was exactly the kind of movement that the structure they had built together was designed to accommodate.

Which meant whoever had read the admin channel had also been reading the joint operational log.

That understanding arrived four seconds after Sable’s voice came over the radio, and it arrived with the particular clarity of a conclusion that explained too many things too neatly to be coincidental.

Axel was in the war room with Castor Vale and Cael when the call came in.

Sable’s voice was controlled in the specific way that experienced fighters were controlled when the situation required them to be something other than what they were feeling the professional surface held firm over something underneath that wasn’t professional at all. ”Eastern perimeter. The Princess is gone. Both clan fighters are down alive, contained. Whatever they used, it was fast and it was targeted. I have the boundary position secured but the logging road approach is dark and I don’t have eyes on it.”

The war room went very quiet.

Cael stood up from the tactical map. He moved the way he had moved since he arrived with the absolute economy of someone who didn’t waste motion but there was something different in it now. A tightness. Something that the King’s considerable discipline was working to contain and was, for the first time since Axel had met him, visibly working at it.

Axel was already moving before Cael fully stood.

He went through the war room door and down the corridor and through the packhouse’s main hall at the pace that his body produced when all the calculations were complete and the only remaining variable was how fast he could cover the ground between him and the problem. Behind him he heard Petra’s voice issuing deployment commands with the clipped efficiency that meant she had already read the situation from his movement and was responding before he gave her direction. The packhouse reorganized itself around his exit the particular alive urgency of a community that had been waiting for something and had just been told what it was.

He went through the eastern tree line at full pace.

The forest received him the way it always received him when he moved through it with purpose not resistance, just the old, rooted presence of very old trees observing something pass beneath them. He covered the two hundred meters to the boundary line in under three minutes and found the scene exactly as Sable had described it.

The two clan fighters were on the ground near the boundary stones. Sable was with them, crouched between them with one hand on each, monitoring their recovery from the containment technique with the focused attention of a field medic who didn’t have medical training but had enough experience to substitute. They were conscious, the older one, Vael, was already sitting up. The younger was still flat but her eyes were tracking.

Not injured. Simply stopped. Neutralized with the precise, targeted efficiency of something that had been designed specifically to neutralize vampire clan fighters without collateral damage, without noise, without leaving the kind of physical evidence that could be documented and traced.

Designed. Prepared. Not improvised in response to the opportunity built in advance of it. Whoever had planned this had known the clan fighters would be here specifically, which meant the joint operational log, which meant the admin channel had been open longer than thirty minutes before he had Petra close it.

He crouched beside Vael.

Sixty years with the clan, Sable had said when they were introduced. The particular steadiness of someone who had been in difficult situations long enough to understand that how you reported them mattered as much as what you reported. She looked at him with eyes that were still slightly unfocused from the containment’s residual effect and she gave him what she had in exactly the number of words it required.

Movement from the north northeast the logging road direction, the same approach vector as the first engagement two nights ago. At least eight operatives, possibly more. They had come out of the tree line fast and coordinated with no warning sound, no scent signal that the clan fighters had registered before the containment deployed. Reyna had registered the approach half a second before the technique activated. Vael didn’t know how, whether the bond or the Blood Apex’s particular sensitivity or simply the instinct of someone who had been hunted long enough to develop a specific alertness. She had pushed Vael and her partner backward toward the boundary stones with a force that carried more urgency than an ordinary push. A deliberate push. The push of someone buying two people a margin.

Then the containment had taken her and the operatives had been gone with her in under twenty seconds.

”She pushed you back on purpose,” Axel said.

”Yes.” Vael held his gaze. ”She knew what was coming. She chose not to fight it.”

He stood up.

He looked at the logging road’s dark mouth between the trees the gap in the forest where the human road cut through and the approach corridor the Hollow had used twice now and would have mapped for exactly this kind of extraction. He looked at the boundary stones in their old positions, settled and unchanged, doing nothing to mark what had just happened twenty meters from where they stood.

Cael arrived beside him. The King had crossed the two hundred meters from the packhouse at a pace that was not quite what he was capable of, which told Axel he had been managing himself deliberately running at the pace of thought rather than the pace of a father. He stood beside Axel and looked at the logging road and his face was very still and the stillness was doing significant work.

”They’ll take her to the secondary site,” Cael said. His voice was even in all its surface qualities and carried something underneath that was not even at all. Not panic, the King didn’t panic. Something more fundamental than panic. The specific fear of a person who has built their life around protecting one thing and has just been told the protection failed. ”The abandoned industrial site on the eastern human road. It’s the only location they control outside the corridor, and the corridor is compromised for them after what happened at the hollow ground.”

”How long does she have?” Axel asked. He asked it with the directness of someone who needed the number and did not need the emotion around the number.

Cael was quiet for a moment. The pause was not hesitation, it was calculation. A hundred and twelve years of understanding the clan’s ritual architecture running against the specific variables of a compromised artifact set and a portable application rather than the corridor’s fixed structure.

”They need to reconfigure the artifacts,” he said. ”The transfer ritual in a portable application is more complex than the corridor design, and they’re working with a damaged anchor stone. The crack Reyna produced in the hollow ground it compromises the whole set’s stability. They’ll need to compensate for it in the reconfiguration.” He looked at Axel. ”Six hours minimum. Possibly eight.”

Axel looked at the clock on his radio.

Eight hours.

He looked at the logging road. He looked at the boundary stones. He looked at the dark mouth of the forest where Reyna had been taken by people who had been planning it for longer than he had known to look for it, and he held the full weight of what the next eight hours required with both hands in the specific way he held everything that mattered.

Cold. Focused. Completely without panic.

He turned back toward the packhouse.

”Tell me everything you know about the industrial site’s layout,” he said to Cael. He was already moving. ”Structure, access points, sight lines, any internal configurations the clan has documented.” He keyed the radio. ”Petra full senior circle in the war room in ten minutes. Bring Vale.”

He didn’t wait for the acknowledgment.

He walked back through the eastern tree line toward the packhouse lights with the particular deliberate pace of a man who had converted the weight he was carrying into fuel and was now simply using it.

Eight hours.

He intended to need considerably fewer than that.
