The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

They came at dawn from the north.

Not the Hollow. That was the thing, the thing that restructured every calculation Axel had been running through the remaining dark hours of the night. The Hollow was still active in the corridor, still probing the eastern boundary with the patience of something that had decided it could afford to wait. But the vehicles that came through the northern approach road at first light bore the Voss Clan’s markings, and there were twelve of them, and they moved with the coordinated precision of people who had not driven through the night to ask permission.

The Vampire King had decided not to wait four days.

Axel stood at the packhouse steps and watched the convoy come to a stop in the outer yard. He had Petra on his left and Soren on his right and behind them the senior warrior circle, still geared from the night’s engagement, injuries bandaged, no one having slept. They looked like what they were a pack that had been hit and was still standing. He decided that was not a bad thing to look like in this moment.

The King stepped out of the third vehicle.

He was tall. Axel had expected that from a hundred and twelve years of Reyna’s posture people carried their origins in their bodies and she carried height and precision and the particular way of moving that said the space belonged to her. Her father was the source of it, aged into something more complete. He looked perhaps fifty by human standards, which meant he was considerably older than that. He wore nothing formal. He had the air of someone who didn’t need formality to communicate authority because authority was simply what he was.

His name was Cael Voss.

He looked at Axel across the outer yard with eyes that were the same color as his daughter’s deep water, winter depth and in them Axel found what he had been trying to assess from the moment the convoy appeared on the northern road. Not hostility. Something more complicated. The expression of a man who had received information he didn’t like and had traveled through the night to determine how much of it was accurate.

”Alpha Bessario,” Cael said.

”Voss King.” Axel came down the steps to meet him at ground level, which was its own statement not retreating into the packhouse, not remaining elevated. Equal ground. ”You moved faster than expected.”

”The Council’s report reached me yesterday evening.” He looked at the packhouse, the tree line, the evidence of the night’s engagement in the churned earth and the emergency lights still running along the eastern perimeter. ”I see the situation is more active than their report conveyed.”

”The Hollow pushed the eastern boundary four hours ago. Test engagement. The real movement is still building.”

Something moved in Cael’s expression. Controlled. But present. ”How many hostiles?”

”Estimated sixty to eighty in the corridor. The test wave was fifteen.”

Cael was quiet for a moment. He looked at the eastern tree line with the specific attention of a man recalibrating a threat assessment he had come here planning to manage.

”My daughter,” he said. Not a question.

”Inside. She’s uninjured.”

”I’d like to see her.”

Axel looked at him for a moment. He thought about what Reyna had said about her father that his word was real, that he had never broken it, that he simply didn’t understand the scale of what the Hollow had built. He thought about the hundred and twelve years of a daughter living carefully within the boundaries of a world her father had built around her and ultimately stepping outside of it because the boundaries had stopped being enough.

”She’ll want to see you,” he said. ”Whether she wants to see you here is her decision to make.”

Cael looked at him.

The look was long and assessing and carried multiple layers. He was reading Axel the way Axel read rooms looking for the signals beneath the visible ones, trying to understand what kind of man stood between him and his daughter and why.

Whatever he found, he didn’t immediately declare.

”May we speak privately?” he said.

Axel gestured toward the packhouse. ”War room.”

They went in. Petra fell back with the rest of the clan’s escort a tense perimeter arrangement that the senior warriors managed with professional care and significant internal discomfort. The Ashveil packhouse had now held a vampire informant and a vampire King within the space of three weeks, and the walls, Axel thought, were absorbing all of it with better grace than the people inside them.

In the war room, Cael looked at the map for a long time.

Axel let him look. He watched the King’s face as he took in the markers, the corridor notations, the documented timeline of the Hollow’s escalation that Axel had been maintaining for weeks. He watched the moment when Cael understood the scale when the reading of the map produced the specific expression of a man who has been underestimating a situation and has just found the evidence of exactly how badly.

”She told you all of this,” Cael said.

”She brought me the foundation. We built the rest together.”

”Together.” The word sat in the room.

Axel met his eyes. ”She’s been the most valuable intelligence asset this pack has had in a crisis that your clan’s internal politics created. She came here without backup and without guarantee and she gave us real information that has kept my people alive.” He said it without aggression. Just clearly. ”Whatever you came here to reclaim, she’s not a possession that wandered off. She made a choice. It was the right choice.”

Cael looked at him for a long time.

”You’re in love with my daughter,” he said.

The war room was very quiet.

Axel didn’t look away. ”Yes.”

Cael absorbed that. He turned back to the map and looked at the eastern markers and the corridor boundary and the black mass of the Hollow’s documented presence.

”Show me what you know,” he said finally. ”All of it.”

Axel pulled out the chair across from the King.

They sat down together and got to work.

Outside, in the east wing, Reyna stood at her window and looked out at the clan vehicles in the outer yard and felt the particular complicated weight of a world that had been held at careful distance for a hundred and twelve years arriving at the door she had walked through of her own choosing.

She straightened.

Then she went to find her father.
