Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 46: Chapter 46: Overdoing It

Early on Saturday morning, Wen Xin, who was busy preparing breakfast in the kitchen, caught a glimpse of her daughter about to head out in her fruit-green tracksuit and hurriedly called out, ”Ye’er, no need to go running today!”

”Mom, we won’t leave until after ten, my run won’t affect that.” Luo Ye approached the kitchen to look, Wen Xin was baking honey cupcakes, with a basin of filling next to it, and a piece of scalded dough, so she glanced at Luo Feng’s bedroom door: ”That lazybones of a brother, not letting him run these past days and he’s still not up! I’ll dig him out to help Mom with breakfast. Dou Dou, charge!”

One human and one bird swiftly ran (flew) toward Luo Feng’s bedroom, and Wen Xin smiled helplessly, shaking her head: ”This girl, always a whirlwind!”

Luo Feng was sound asleep, curled up like a shrimp. He hadn’t been to school these past few days, so he had to keep up appearances. After all, Wang Wei was still in the hospital—if he showed up at school hale and hearty, wouldn’t Xiao Hua immediately make a comeback?

For the sake of the Luo family’s breakables, Classmate Luo Feng had no choice but to be confined at home and not see anyone for a while. Fortunately, he was naturally quiet, so this hikikomori life of recent days turned out to be unexpectedly carefree and content.

Luo Ye smiled mischievously, picked up Dou Dou and went to the foot of the bed, lifted the blanket, and used Dou Dou’s little paws to scratch Luo Feng’s soles—a frantic tickle attack ensued. Luo Feng’s feet jerked up but—he didn’t wake up!

Luo Ye continued the assault with Dou Dou’s little paw. The already shrimp-like curled Luo Feng, upon being tickled into a cocoon, suddenly sat up laughing heartily. Though laughing, his eyes were filled with deep confusion, still not quite grasping the situation.

”Ye’er...” Once he recognized his sister standing by the bed, grinning with Dou Dou in her arms, Luo Feng’s first reaction was to look at the alarm clock on the bedside table—it was just past five-thirty.

Luo Ye giggled, ”Bro, Mom asked you to help her make breakfast!”

”Tweet tweet...” Dou Dou joined in the commotion, flapping its little wings happily, looking quite smug. Clearly, in its little mind, stirring up Luo Feng with its little owner was a source of immense pride.

Luo Feng yawned: ”Alright, I’ll go help Mom with breakfast, but Ye’er, you’re a girl, why don’t you learn to cook?”

”Who needs to learn when they’re naturally smart? One of these days I’ll prepare a feast to open your eyes!” Luo Ye proudly tilted her little head back, ”I’ve taken cooking classes at school, you know!”

”Cough... cough...” Luo Feng coughed from choking on his saliva, unable to conceal his shock from his dear sister’s audacious claim.

”Bro, you’re looking down on me?” Luo Ye blinked her pretty big eyes, ”Forget it, I’ll listen to Mom and skip my workout this morning, and I’ll show you my skills. Dou Dou, keep an eye on brother getting dressed. If he dares lie down again, twist his eyebrows!”

”Tweet tweet...”

”Why the lack of trust? I’m getting dressed right away.” Luo Feng wasn’t sure if it was his imagination, but when Dou Dou tweeted, it seemed to nod continuously.

Luo Feng, under Dou Dou’s relentless gaze, recalling the sight of its tiny beak pinching Wang Wei’s face, broke into a cold sweat and hurriedly sped up dressing.

When Luo Ye arrived in the kitchen, Wen Xin had already baked the cupcakes and was ready to wrap the steamed dumplings. She smiled tenderly at her daughter, ”Did you stir up your brother?”

”Why call it stirring up?” Luo Ye rolled her eyes, ”Mom always favors brother more.”

”You little rascal!” Wen Xin tapped on Luo Ye’s forehead, focusing back on her task.

Luo Ye tugged at Wen Xin’s sleeve, ”Mom, I’m not going to work out. You go rest, I’ll make breakfast today!”

”...” Wen Xin opened her mouth, but no words came out—she was struck speechless by her daughter’s bold declaration.

”Don’t look so shocked, I will make sure the family has breakfast on time!” Luo Ye said as she pushed Wen Xin out of the kitchen and casually locked the door from the inside.

”Ye’er...” Wen Xin anxiously peered through the glass door, ”Let Mom in, don’t joke around about this.” The subtext was: Don’t burn down the kitchen, please.

”Mom, don’t worry!” Luo Ye grinned at her mother, and with a ”whoosh,” the curtains were drawn. Now, no chance to see inside.

After Luo Zhenggang finished washing up and came out, he saw Wen Xin pacing back and forth in front of the kitchen door, puzzled, he glanced at the kitchen: ”Is Ye inside?”

”Yes, the kid suddenly said she wanted to make breakfast and even locked the door, this...”

”No big deal, can’t burn anything, just sit down and rest. Worst comes to worst, we’ll just have Feng’er go buy some food at the canteen later!” Clearly, Mr. Luo also didn’t believe in his daughter’s culinary skills.

...

Wheat ear-shaped steamed dumplings with thin skins, fried golden brown and fluffy dough sticks, a plate of finely chopped salty pickles, a dish of cold mixed green and red pepper strips, a bowl of savory salty egg porridge with an appetizing aroma, and the small cakes that Wen Xin had baked earlier, once breakfast was all served on the table, not only Wen Xin and Luo Feng were surprised, Luo Zhenggang, who had been ready to send Luo Feng to buy breakfast, was also taken aback.

If Luo Ye’s previous performances were mostly in the realms of physical and intellectual strength, this time it was a pure technical display, and the key point was that it looked like a skill never practiced before.

Coming back to her senses, Luo Feng quickly ran to the kitchen, took a look around, and then hurried back: ”Ye’er... Ye’er, are you sure nobody helped you?”

”Ye’er...”

Luo Ye quickly interrupted her Mom, ”Don’t be so surprised, I took cooking classes at school. You know what they say about being dexterous? They’re talking about me!”

She realized by now that she might have overdone it. Damn it, it was all because of those annoying people making her emotionally unstable and in a bad mood. If it weren’t for the provocation, her brain wouldn’t have impulsively vented on the breakfast preparation.

She could feel without looking up, her dad’s eyes, like spotlights, scanning over her. Unable to bear the scrutiny, she pouted in feigned dissatisfaction: ”Can you not underestimate me like that? When Mom passed on her talent in this area, she gave me a bit extra. Do you really have to be that distrustful?”

After contemplating, Wen Xin thought the explanation sounded reasonable, so she nodded: ”Hmm, that must be it. I do learn faster in this area than others!” After taking a sip of porridge: ”Not bad—you’ve controlled the heat well. Zhenggang, quickly eat! It’s rare for Ye’er to cook so well on her first try in the kitchen. Feng’er, you eat too. Stop staring.”

Perhaps it was the sudden change of taste that made the meal even more appealing; the food was all eaten up clean. Wen Xin, who always regulated Luo Ye’s portion sizes, for once did not keep an eye on her.

Speaking of which, given Mom’s obsession with a girl’s figure, Luo Ye had secretly stashed quite a few snacks in her room. With Mom’s dietary standards, how could she possibly maintain her fitness?

Sadly, those exercises couldn’t be performed in front of family members. Mom always thought she just went for a run in the morning and a walk in the evening, so she had slightly relaxed the standard for her.

”Ye’er, from now on, you’ll be in charge of breakfast one day a week, to give everyone a change of taste!” After eating, Luo Zhenggang didn’t pursue the matter further but instead issued a new command.

”Dad...”

”No objections allowed!” Luo Zhenggang glared at Luo Ye: ”Helping your mother lighten the load, aren’t you willing? Besides, with your cooking skills, Ye’er, you won’t starve in this lifetime. You could work as a breakfast chef with these skills alone.”

Luo Ye: ”...”

Luo Feng: ”Right! Right! Right!”

”Right my foot!” Luo Ye angrily slapped Luo Feng.

”Ye’er, why do you always bully your brother?” Luo Feng looked perplexed.

Luo Ye rolled her eyes, hugged Dou Dou, and went back to her room, her small figure clearly signaling to everyone— I’m not pleased, you underestimate me!

”Ha ha ha...” The sudden burst of laughter made Luo Ye turn around and glare fiercely at Luo Feng: ”From now on, you’re not getting any breakfast I make!”
