Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 37: Chapter 37 Adding a Night Shift

”Bro, don’t stop, keep running, we’re adding two more laps starting today. If I can keep up, how can you not?” Luo Ye kicked Luo Feng to go faster while running.

”Let’s just add one lap...” Luo Feng gasped heavily: ”Ye’er, we need to... we need to gradually increase the exercise load, otherwise, it will... it’ll kill someone!”

”I’m not dead, so you won’t be!” However, Luo Ye remained uncompromising, the moment Luo Feng slowed down even slightly, she kicked him again, causing a middle-aged man following them to twitch at the corners of his mouth.

”One lap is 400 meters, Ye’er... that’s too much!” Luo Feng felt like his throat was on fire, and was puzzled; his sister’s physical condition was originally worse than his, and she hadn’t been training for even two months, so how had she become stronger than him?

Another thing that puzzled him was that since the late-night conversation, Ye’er kept increasing her exercise load. In 32 days, from that night to today, they had gone from eight laps every morning to fifteen now. They weren’t training to be long-distance runners; was it necessary to work so hard?

In this baking summer heat, their clothes sticking to their bodies, it is insanely uncomfortable. Of course, he only dared to mutter this in his heart; now, the person with the least say was him.

”Pick up the pace, I’ve said it before; this exercise volume and time have been calculated reasonably, there won’t be any problem. If you want to get stronger, you must persist!” Luo Ye declared, kicking Luo Feng once again. She had no other choice; her brother was just too lazy, always thinking about lying down.

”Little Luo Ye, you’re pretty impressive!” The man caught up and started to run alongside Luo Ye.

Luo Ye tilted her head to size up the man, quickly searching her mind for a recollection. She had an impression but no time to think, so she gave a wry smile: ”You run too, huh?” She felt like she’d asked such a foolish question.

”The little guy doesn’t remember who Uncle is, eh?” The man understood by looking at Luo Ye’s expression.

Luo Ye giggled: ”Um... Uncle, my head’s spinning and my vision’s blurry from running so much, I’m a bit muddled right now, please don’t be offended, ok?”

Luo Feng quickly turned back and upon recognizing the man’s face, greeted him while gasping for breath: ”Uncle Song, you... you’re exercising too, I’ve never... seen you out here before?”

Luo Ye really wanted to kick her brother down; her mind was clear enough to not see clearly, yet he could still recognize clearly despite gasping like an ox - wasn’t he intentionally making her look bad?

”Luo Feng, you’re not quite as enduring as Little Luo Ye, keep it up!” Song Fangzheng looked amusedly at Luo Ye as she glares and pouts at Luo Feng: ”Little Luo Ye, forgetting isn’t embarrassing; Uncle doesn’t often visit your home, so it’s normal that you don’t remember him. Besides, young people aren’t fond of old men, right?”

”Hehe... Uncle Song... hehe...” Luo Ye chuckled awkwardly, but her mind was quickly piecing together all the information about Song Fangzheng. Oh my, heaven was truly helping her! Everything was still possible, oh yeah!

”Uncle used to be a soldier, I like kids who love exercise and have stamina. Little Luo Ye, come visit my home when you have time!” Song Fangzheng said and waved his hand before turning towards the residential area.

Luo Ye lifted her chin and raised her eyebrows at Luo Feng triumphantly: ”Bro, see that? Uncle Song invited me to his house and didn’t invite you, don’t you have any thoughts about that? Don’t you want to work harder and surpass me?”

”No... no way, Ye’er... I’m happy to see someone liking you...” Luo Feng gasped like a dying fish.

”Bro, haven’t I told you not to breathe with your mouth? Isn’t it weird if you’re not tired? Okay, let’s slow down a bit!” Luo Ye handed a water bottle over sympathetically: ”Don’t stop, just drink a little.”

”Much better!” The warm saltwater flowed down his throat and Luo Feng felt much more relieved.

”Starting tonight, half an hour after dinner, we’re going out for a jog too, for an hour, and I’ll decide the route!”

Just when Luo Feng saw a glimmer of hope, upon hearing Luo Ye’s words, he nearly collapsed. His little sister was after his life; having finished the morning run, they now had to continue in the evening. Was she aiming to become a champion marathon runner?

”Ye’er, I’m planning to apply for a boarding school...” Luo Feng looked pitifully at Luo Ye: ”I promise, I will keep up the exercise at school.”

”No way, who’s going to pick me up if you’re boarding? Will you worry about your weak little sister going home alone? Aren’t you afraid I’ll be bullied?” Luo Ye declared with complete righteousness, as if the kid who just ran twelve laps without so much as a blush or out of breath was definitely not her. No way!

”Ye’er...” Words fail me.

”Don’t worry, from now on the evenings are mainly for walking, and running is secondary. Happy now?” Trying to butter him up, Luo Ye once again offered the water bottle to Luo Feng: ”Brother, take a few more sips, and we’ll just stroll two loops before heading home.”

...

”Say, Feng’er, how come you’re starting to look more and more like Ye’er did when she first started morning exercises?” Wen Xin, seeing Luo Feng being dragged back by Luo Ye like as if dragging a dead dog, had a face full of distress: ”Ye’er, we’re not aiming for the Olympics, do we need to push ourselves so hard?”

”Waste of space, look at Ye’er. Running the same distance and she’s full of life!” Luo Zhengfeng shifted his gaze away from the newspaper, looking at Luo Feng with a mix of disappointment and anger: ”Don’t you feel embarrassed?”

”Why don’t you try running a few laps yourself tomorrow morning!” Wen Xin wasn’t happy with her husband’s painless stance from the comfort of where he sat.

”Mom, your darling daughter wants to start doing night shifts starting tonight, adding an hour of exercise half an hour after dinner. She definitely wants to go to the Olympics!” Luo Feng seized the opportunity to seek assistance.

”Ye’er, is that true?” Wen Xin was incredulous, could it be that her daughter is like a robot, not knowing fatigue?

”Yeah, no kidding, brother is too weak, we need to get him in shape as soon as possible. Don’t worry, mom, I’ve got it under control! I’m off to take a shower now!” Luo Ye waved her hand and headed for the bathroom, her tone clearly not up for discussion.

Wen Xin rubbed Luo Feng a few more times, and then patted his back lightly: ”Hurry and wash up in the bathroom, your clothes are sticking to you!”

”Mmm!” Luo Feng responded dejectedly, struggling to get up from the sofa and staggering towards the bathroom. Luo Zhenggang, filled with frustration, threw a feather duster his way: ”You have no spine. Ye’er didn’t embarrass herself like you did on her first day, are you sure you’re a man?”

”Cheep cheep...” The feather duster missed hitting Luo Feng but nearly hit Dou Dou, who was waiting outside the bathroom for Luo Ye. The little creature immediately got angry, flapping its wings and standing its feathers on end, its round eyes fixed on Luo Zhenggang, looking ready to fight the instigator.

Luo Zhenggang clicked his tongue twice: ”See? The pets reflect the character of their owners. Look at Dou Dou, it’s on par with Ye’er now, just a bit overconfident...” He was unable to finish his sentence as Dou Dou pinched him, clearly biting hard, and you could see the bruise on his arm.

Watching Dou Dou fly swiftly, bite him, then fly back and stand its feathers up, Luo Zhenggang couldn’t help but have a bittersweet expression. A high-ranking Deputy Mayor being bullied by a bird!

”Serves you right for making fun of her!” Wen Xin laughed gleefully, walking over to Dou Dou to gently soothe it: ”Let’s not bother with him, good bird. By the way, hubby, do you think Ye’er really wants to be an athlete?”

”No way, that child, maybe she’s just eager to get stronger. However, what’s rare is she has patience and perseverance. Honestly, I didn’t expect her to keep up with the morning exercises. Wife, don’t get in Ye’er’s way, her efforts now will have paybacks in the future!” Luo Zhenggang quickly said, worried that Wen Xin would step in because of her sympathy for their son.

”Do I look so unprincipled in your eyes?” Suddenly Wen Xin clapped her forehead: ”Eh? Why do I feel like there’s something I haven’t mentioned?”

”Something?” Luo Zhenggang looked at Wen Xin puzzled: ”Is it about me or about the kids?”

”It’s about...” Wen Xin furrowed her brow, pondering hard for a moment before giving up: ”Forget it, the more anxious I am, the less likely I’ll remember. I’ll talk about it when it comes to mind.”
