Building a Technological Power Starting with the Type 59 missile and Going Astray in Technological Development

Pan Xueming smiled, his eyes sparkling with confidence, and said, ”Boss Shen, don’t worry, the rental cost can completely cover the maintenance cost, and there will be a certain profit.”

He paused and then added: ”In addition, our 704 Shipyard manufactures large-scale cutter suction dredgers not only to make money, but more importantly to show the outside world our strength and technical level. This is like a gorgeous show for everyone to see our capabilities!”

After listening to this, Lin Chenran nodded slightly, agreeing with Pan Xueming’s statement.

In a field that other shipyards cannot enter, the 704 Shipyard’s successful manufacture of large-scale cutter suction dredgers is undoubtedly a shocking breakthrough.

This uniqueness not only attracts more customers but also enhances the company’s reputation.

Pan Xueming went on to explain: “From the customer’s perspective, if a shipyard can manufacture large-scale cutter suction dredgers, then small and medium-sized cutter suction dredgers will be a piece of cake. In this way, we can win the trust and favor of customers.”

Lin Chenran thought seriously for a while, and then responded: ”No problem, Mr. Pan, I agree that you design three different models of cutter suction dredgers.”

”However, only one large cutter suction dredger is currently allowed to be manufactured, mainly for leasing business and external display.”

Pan Xueming nodded and secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Lin Chenran still agreed with his idea.

“Mr. Pan, the market prospects for small and medium-sized cutter suction dredgers are very broad. Now that it has been determined, let’s start mobilizing and designing and developing them!”

Lin Chenran said this in a decisive tone without any hesitation. He knew very well that time is money and opportunities are fleeting.

So Pan Xueming was directly arranged to prepare for the research and development of the cutter suction dredger project.

After hearing this, Pan Xueming patted his chest confidently and replied affirmatively: ”Don’t worry, Mr. Lin, after the meeting, I will immediately organize relevant personnel to start various preparatory work. It is estimated that the design can be completed within one and a half months.”

He was full of confidence in his team and directly issued a ”military order” to ensure that the design would be completed within one and a half months.

For the 704 Shipyard, which has strong technical strength and experience, a cutter suction dredger is a piece of cake.

They have successfully designed, developed and manufactured the more complex Aegis missile destroyer, so the cutter suction dredger is naturally no problem for them.

When the senior executives of the 704 Shipyard present heard that Lin Chenran agreed to let his shipyard design, develop and manufacture the cutter suction dredger, they all smiled brightly.

This means that the 704 Shipyard has an additional profit point, which can further improve the shipyard’s order performance.

Then, Lin Chenran smiled and made a suggestion: ”I would like to ask you to help design, develop and build an icebreaker.”

Hearing this proposal, everyone was stunned, and then they questioned: ”What? Mr. Lin, you want our 704 Shipyard to design, develop and build an icebreaker? And a large icebreaker?”

Everyone was filled with doubts and confusion. If a large cutter-suction dredger could still break even, then a large icebreaker would simply be a money-loser.

Because the scope of use of icebreakers is very narrow, they are usually only used for scientific expeditions or rescue missions in polar regions.

In addition, the maintenance costs of large icebreakers are also quite high.

Everyone present began to talk and speculate among themselves.

Is this an order issued from the national level to our own General Lin?

Let them build a massive icebreaker?
At this moment, all the senior executives of the 704 Shipyard turned their eyes to Pan Xueming in front of them, their eyes full of expectation, hoping that he would stand up and firmly oppose the construction of such a large icebreaker.

Facing everyone’s gaze, Pan Xueming shook his head helplessly, with a bitter smile on his face.

As the director of the 704 Shipyard, he was the only one who could persuade them at this time.

Pan Xueming took a deep breath, calmed down, and spoke with trepidation:

”Mr. Lin, I don’t quite understand why you suddenly decided to design a large icebreaker?”

His voice trembled slightly. ”You also know that the use of icebreakers is more limited than that of large suction dredgers. Their role is limited to breaking ice in the Arctic and Antarctic, and in some extreme conditions, when the ocean is frozen.”

“Does the country have plans to develop Antarctica?”

”That’s why we need to build a large icebreaker?”

Pan Xueming couldn’t help but raise the questions deep in his heart.

”No, this icebreaker was not built at the request of the country.” Lin Chenran shook his head and denied it.

”Although the use of icebreakers is relatively narrow, they do have a certain market. Of course, I want your 704 Shipyard to build icebreakers not just for sale,” he added.

Hearing this, everyone present couldn’t help but feel confused and curious, and they all pricked up their ears to listen to what was to come.

Lin Chenran continued to explain: ”This icebreaker is used to open up the Arctic route.”

As soon as these words were spoken, everyone present showed puzzled expressions. They looked at each other, as if they couldn’t believe their ears.

Everyone was confused.

For the Arctic route?

The Arctic region is covered with ice and snow all year round, with a cold climate and harsh environment. Is it really possible to open a shipping route?

Are there any ships willing to risk the Arctic route?
After all, it is full of unknowns and dangers.

And almost the entire Arctic Circle is in the hands of the Russian bear.

Most ships still choose to take traditional routes.

Such as the Suez Canal, Cape of Good Hope and so on.

”This……”

”That……”

Everyone at the scene was shocked by Lin Chenran’s idea.

Lin Chenran said confidently: ”The Suez Canal is prone to problems. From the beginning of the year to now, it has been blocked many times.”

”It is necessary to reopen an Arctic shipping route. The profits are huge.”

Of course, this needs to be discussed with the Russian side.

Then Lin Chenran continued, ”Boss Pan, after the three types of cutter suction dredgers are designed, developed and manufactured, you can send someone to the country to which the Suez Canal belongs to promote them. I believe there will be good results.”

This is eating both sides at the same time!

Lin Chenran’s words made Pan Xueming and a group of senior executives of the 704 Shipyard’s eyes light up.

That’s right, we can sell our own cutter suction dredgers to the countries with major canal waterways.

Large cutter suction dredgers are likely to be sold.

”I don’t mind if the large icebreaker you designed, developed and manufactured is left gathering dust in the warehouse. If my plan succeeds, it will play an important role in the development of the entire 704 Shipyard.”

The main purpose is to open a new waterway, which will allow the 704 Shipyard, the 077 Mechanical Military Factory, and the Yan Country to make a lot of money.

It’s worth a try!
