Chapter 114: Chapter 115 Outrageous (Released on Friday, request support!!!)Dinner time.

”You said, if I help you snatch that female researcher and replace her with a fake death, you could always be with her,” Clo muttered, his chest’s White Crow’s red eyes dazzlingly bright, ”In that case, would you join me?”

”...Would you shut up?” Jiang Shu poured the sauce from the meat over his rice, speaking irritably, ”With so many talented people here, why do you have to bother me?”

”Because you’re the most special, the best at deceiving,” Clo said with a grin. He flipped over, rolled from the empty space on the dining table to the opposite side next to Jiang Shu, and then sat down. ”Think it over, think it over. Maybe you should be the boss... uh, never mind, I am the BOSS. You’re not cut out for great things right now.”

”Well, there it is,” Jiang Shu moved his rice around, ”Or I could teach you magic, it’s all the same.”

”emmm...” Clo stared at the ceiling, then quickly shook his head, ”No, even if I learned magic, I wouldn’t be a magician.”

”What do you mean?” Jiang Shu keenly picked up on his implication.

”...” Clo looked at him, helplessly said, ”I am a Wanderer, I can’t become a Magician.”

Hmm?

Jiang Shu sensed something off. This seemed inconsistent with what Wolf had said. Wolf mentioned that as long as a Wanderer met the required level of proficiency, they could change professions accordingly.

If both were correct, there was only one possibility.

The profession of Magician was special.

Following this thought, since the Lonely City previously had no Magicians, obviously the Main Brain didn’t understand what a Magician truly was, which clearly meant Clo, the Wanderer, could not transform himself into a Magician.

At least not in the short term.

”That’s that, then. Can’t help,” Jiang Shu spread his hands, not wanting to get involved. Now, it seemed the best course of action was...

To wait for Clo to meet his end, and Jiang Shu to visit him before his death to uncover the truth.

”I’m going to find someone.” He dropped a line and headed towards the historian he met this morning; he needed to understand some things.

The historian’s name was Duan Xun, different from Jiang Shu’s stereotype of such academics, he realized from their brief morning exchange that Duan Xun was quite a conversationalist and humorous too.

Jiang Shu found Duan Xun in the noisy cafeteria and sat opposite him, politely saying, ”Hello, Mr. Duan.”

”Ha ha, it’s Jiang Shu, ah.” Duan Xun chuckled, tidied up the table in front of Jiang Shu, cleaning up the leftovers, ”What do you want to ask? I’m all ears.”

”Thank you.” Jiang Shu nodded, getting straight to the point, ”I want to understand how Lonely City transformed from a noble-led society to the current group-dominated society.”

Indeed, the history books of Lonely City showed that it had skipped a critical step; it veered onto this divergent path towards the end of noble rule, and over the next hundred years, Lonely City had hardly changed.

”Well, from ancient times until about a hundred years ago,” Duan Xun began smoothly, ”Lonely City was always ruled by old nobles, regardless of what revolutions occurred. In the end, it just resulted in a reshuffling of some nobles. But starting from the Eight-five War a hundred years ago, Lonely City began to see new changes.”

He took a sip of today’s soup, continuing, ”Simply put, compared to the old nobles, the Three Major Groups were better adapted to the trends of the times, so they jointly initiated the Eight-five War on August the fifth.”

”But what no one expected was that the war lasted thirteen years, both sides sustaining massive losses of manpower and economic damages,” Duan Xun said. He suddenly couldn’t help but laugh a bit, ”In the end, both sides desperately wanted to end the war, but their choices were completely different.”

Jiang Shu, having read the history overview, slowly said, ”One wanted reconciliation, the other wanted to completely annihilate.”

”Right,” Duan Xun sneered, ”The old nobles chose reconciliation, while the Three Major Groups opted to use weapons of mass destruction, taking advantage of the old nobles’ guard being down on the day of reconciliation, completely destroying the old nobles’ remaining war potential.”

”At this point, we should have realized that the Three Major Groups were even more loathsome than the old nobles,” Duan Xun’s tone clearly became emotional, ”They are the leeches of Lonely City, everything they did was for power, wealth, and status. They are the real root of Lonely City’s pain.”

”Uh, I get it, I get it, you’re absolutely right,” Jiang Shu repeatedly concurred, ”But in the end, things were settled peacefully, weren’t they? But it’s not much mentioned in the books.”

”Right,” Duan Xun nodded, ”At a critical moment, the City Lord at the time led an elite squad to stop the Three Major Groups’ plans, but the old noble’s military forces were also heavily depleted in assisting the City Lord resulting in the Three Major Groups still coming out on top.”

He continued, ”Later, both parties eventually reconciled, with the old noble’s twelve clans giving up their armies and most of their power, transforming into traditional family dynasties, either doing business or politics.”

”Didn’t the Three Major Groups root them out completely?” Jiang Shu wondered.

”Controlling their weapons and Combat Sequences was sufficient,” Duan Xun waved slightly, ”Now is not the time for brave battles. Moreover, no one can unite those twelve families anymore, not even the current City Lord.”

”Hmm,” Jiang Shu acknowledged.

”One of the terms for peacefully settling the Eight-five War was that the City Lord’s lineage would forever retain the title of ruler of Lonely City, but with little actual power. This was one of the clauses jointly petitioned at the time to honor the City Lord,” Duan Xun explained.

”Oh—” Jiang Shu then understood why there was still a City Lord in Lonely City; he had never found a reasonable explanation online.

Lonely City’s information blockade was severe unless one was a professional, it was difficult to access detailed information.

”Nowadays, these old nobles’ descendants are mostly spread across districts one to five, and correspondingly, the control of the Three Major Groups is slightly weaker in those regions,” Duan Xun added, looking in the direction Jiang Shu had come from, ”Look, that guy in your cell, he’s from one of those families.”

”Hmm? Him?” Jiang Shu was stunned; this was entirely beyond his expectation.

”Right, his full name is Clo Ashbourne,” Duan Xun casually said, ”The Ashbourne family is one of the better-off ones among those families, and Clo was previously a candidate for the family heir. I don’t know how he ended up like this.”

So, failing as a terrorist means going home to inherit billions?

Great, Clo has proven with his actions that he’s rather good at it.

Just ridiculous.
