123: Chapter 123 The House Buying TurmoilShen Yulin quickly picked up his phone and called the real estate agent again.

”Hello, Little Li? It’s your Brother Shen. Can you arrange for more people to come see the house? I’ve paid the agency fee.”

”The people who came at 1 PM? They came, but they immediately asked for a fifty percent discount. Isn’t that just a joke?”

On the other end of the line, the agent was also fuming. This petty citizen—this dilapidated house was worth 300,000 yuan at most, yet he insisted on selling it for 800,000. Wasn’t he just looking for a sucker?

The agent had already given up hope on closing this deal and hung up the phone, claiming to be busy.

Shen Yulin shouted ”hello” a few times before realizing what happened. He wanted to smash his phone but couldn’t bring himself to do it. He pulled a cigarette from his pocket to light it, only to find his hands shaking violently.

He wiped the sweat from his forehead and tried desperately to control his hands, but it was no use.

”It’s over. Brother Gou won’t let me off.” Shen Yulin threw the cigarette and lighter onto the ground all at once and slowly slumped down against the corner of the wall.

Brother Gou was a well-known thug within a radius of dozens of miles. He usually set up a gambling table under a bridge to run a gambling business and also dealt in loan sharking.

One day, while passing by the bridge by chance, he had only intended to watch the excitement by the gambling stall, but under his friends’ egging on, he ended up at the table in a daze.

As it turned out, he made a net profit of over two thousand yuan that night. The crowd around him cheered and called him the God of Gamblers. This made an ordinary person like him, who was usually a nobody, feel so smug he lost his sense of direction.

From then on, things spiraled out of control. He went from winning money every day to losing all his savings, and finally, he gambled away the marriage fund his mother had saved for him and his father’s pension.

Yet he still wouldn’t stop, hoping to win it all back in one big game. Ultimately, he took out a high-interest loan from Brother Gou. Now, with the interest compounding, it had reached 800,000 yuan—an amount he had never seen in his life.

”Yulin, this house was obtained with your father’s life when he died in the line of duty. It was meant for your marriage; it can’t be sold. If all else fails, let’s call the police.”

Mother Shen walked out of the room, hunched and trembling, two lines of tears streaming down her wrinkled, dark face. She looked at her son with both resentment and heartache.

”It’s useless. The police can’t protect us forever.” Shen Yulin didn’t move, staring blankly at the ceiling. ”Brother Gou won’t let me go. Will he make me sell my blood or kidneys? Or will he kidnap me to Russia to fish for King Crabs? I heard many people caught for crab fishing in Russia die at sea, though I don’t know if it’s true.”

”Don’t be afraid, son. I’ll go and fight them!” Mother Shen could no longer bear it and rushed toward the kitchen to grab a cleaver and risk her life.

At that moment...

”This is Shen Yulin’s house, right?” a young man asked as he walked into the room.

The newcomer was Zhang Wei. He had finally reached Lingao County after driving for over three hours; long-distance driving was truly grueling work.

Zhang Wei’s face was full of exhaustion, and he wished he could find a hotel and fall asleep immediately.

”Yes, it is. What are you here for?” Mother Shen turned around and looked at Zhang Wei warily. If this man said a single word about debt, she would charge at him.

”I heard this house is for sale. I happen to want to open a Guesthouse, so I came to take a look.”

Upon hearing this, Shen Yulin, who had been slumping in the corner, suddenly snapped his head up. He jumped up with lightning speed and grabbed Zhang Wei’s sleeve.

”Boss, you’ve come to the right place! Let me show you around. Don’t mind the style looking a bit dated now; twenty or thirty years ago, this was the most fashionable house in our village.”

”The Feng Shui of this house is also top-notch. Our ancestors produced many famous local figures. It’s perfect for a Guesthouse—it’ll bring in wealth!”

Zhang Wei intended to buy it directly, but he had to go through the motions. He said casually, ”Brother, you’ve said so much, why don’t you show me around the house?”

Hearing this, Shen Yulin realized there was a chance. He immediately bowed and scraped, saying with a smile, ”Come, let me show you inside.”

Hearing that the visitor was there to see the house, Mother Shen wanted to advise her son, but since the family owed so much money they couldn’t repay, she could only sigh and sit aside with a worried face.

Zhang Wei ignored Shen Yulin’s clumsy flattery and looked around. He soon discovered an Oval Flowerpot under the kitchen windowsill.

It was roughly 40 centimeters in diameter and 20 centimeters high. A peacock pattern was painted on the pot in blue and white pigments. It was filled with soil and a few scattered green onions were growing in it.

This must be the treasure. Zhang Wei remained calm on the surface, but he was incredibly excited inside. After all, a piece of yuan dynasty blue and white porcelain—an antique that countless collectors dreamed of but could never reach—was about to be his.

”The house is decent. How much are you planning to sell it for?” Zhang Wei didn’t want to waste time and asked directly.

Shen Yulin seemed to think of something. He swallowed hard and said somewhat breathlessly, ”Eight—no, a fixed price of five hundred thousand. This is the lowest price.”

Zhang Wei was a bit surprised. Information showed that this gambler named Shen Yulin owed 800,000 yuan in high-interest loans. Why was he willing to sell the house for only 500,000 now?

However, Zhang Wei didn’t bother with that. Saving 300,000 yuan was a good thing.

”Five hundred thousand is no problem. I’ll add another fifty thousand, and you sell me everything in the house. Consider it compensation. If that works, I’ll transfer the money and complete the transaction today.”

Shen Yulin was in no mood to bargain. Thinking that the old furniture in his house was worth far less than fifty thousand, he felt he was getting a great deal. He nodded in agreement without hesitation.

Zhang Wei used his phone to search for the nearest real estate agency and asked them to bring a purchase contract to complete the deal. Additionally, he asked them to draft an agreement for the transfer of the items inside the house to be brought along.

The agent was overjoyed. Sitting in the office, a commission had literally fallen from the sky and hit him on the head. Happiness had come all too suddenly.

He printed the contract at light speed and rode his Electric Scooter, arriving in just over ten minutes.

Zhang Wei and Shen Yulin both signed the purchase contract and the item agreement. Since Mother Shen’s name was also on the household register, she had no choice but to sign as well.

Zhang Wei didn’t hesitate; he was a VIP customer of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. He transferred the 550,000 yuan to Shen Yulin’s account on the spot.

”Alright, then you can handle the house as you see fit, Boss. I’m heading out for a bit.” Seeing the money arrive, Shen Yulin’s eyes lit up, and he dashed out the door.

Mother Shen assumed he was in a hurry to repay the debt and didn’t think much of it. Instead, she approached Zhang Wei nervously, poured him a bowl of water, and said, ”Sir, please be kind. My child’s father left some worthless things; I wonder if I could take them with me?”

”Auntie, would you mind telling me what they are?” Zhang Wei was non-committal. As long as she wasn’t taking the yuan dynasty blue and white porcelain, anything else was fine. Seeing Mother Shen’s sorrowful expression, he couldn’t help but feel a bit curious.

Mother Shen didn’t say much and gestured for Zhang Wei to follow her into the room. She then pulled out a bundle from the deepest part of the wardrobe.

”This is the last of what the child’s father left behind.” As she spoke, she opened the bundle. A flash of golden light flickered inside, like a sharp sword flying past, startling Zhang Wei so much that his hair stood on end.
